The Saints improved to at home with last weekend s wins in a record-setting weekend for both Kyle Hayton and Gavin Bayreuther. Hayton became the program leader for career shutouts with back-to-back clean sheets, while Bayreuther tied the record for career goals by a defensemen. In Friday s 4-0 win over Princeton, the Saints got goals from Carson Gicewicz, Gavin Bayreuther, Jacob Pritchard and Joe Sullivan. Pritchard s goal was shorthanded; the third shorthanded goal for the Saints this season, tying the total number of shorthanded goals for the entire season through just 10 games. Bayreuther, Pritchard, Alexander Dahl and Ben Finkelstein all had multi-point nights against the Tigers. Drew Smolcynski and Michael Ederer scored in a 2-0 win over Quinnipiac on Saturday, for the first shutout win over the Bobcats since November Both goals came via breakaways, with Bayreuther springing Smolcynski for a snipe from the hashmarks in the second period. In the third period, Ederer forced a turnover in the neutral zone and lifted a backhand shot into the top of the net for his second goal of the year. Hayton earned both wins, with 29 saves against Princeton and 25 against the Bobcats. He is in his last three starts and has allowed just two goals in that span. Nineteen Saints have recorded at least one point through the firs 10 games of the year, while nine players have multiple goals and 12 players have multiple assists. Five players have special teams goals, with Bayreuther and Pritchard having both power play and shorthanded goals this season. 2 About the No. 16/15 Dutchmen The Dutchmen are coming off a 2-0 weekend against Yale and Brown with a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs and 6-4 win over the Bears. They are currently atop the ECAC Hockey league standings at 4-0 after having swept RPI on their conference-opening weekend on Oct , which included a 3-2 overtime win the second game. Leading scorer Mike Vecchione was both the ECAC Hockey and the Hockey Commissioners Association player of the month for October. He is currently the only player in Division I with upwards of 20 points with 24 and leads the nation in points per game (2.18) and goals per game (1.27). Meanwhile, Spencer Foo is fourth in the nation in assists per game (1.18). Additionally, Alex Sakellaropoulos is one of two Division I goaltenders with a winning percentage with a record on the season. The last win for St. Lawrence at Union came in the season in the form of a 2-0 shutout. About the Engineers The Engineers have struggled so far this season, entering the weekend at They earned their first conference win over Brown, 3-1, last Friday before suffering their second 3-2 overtime loss in the last three games to Yale at home. RPI has been outscored in their six losses to date. Evan Tironese leads the Engineers in overall scoring with 13 points, as well as points in conference games with four assists. Drew Melanson leads RPI in goals against league opponents with three. Jared Wilson and Riley Bourbonnais have been the key to RPI s special teams efforts so far this season, as Wilson leads the Engineers with three of the team s seven power play goals this season. Bourbonnais has scored two with the man-advanatge, while also added a pair of shorthanded goals and is tied for first in Divsion I. Melanson has the other shorthanded tally for RPI so far this year. 3 Men s Hockey Staff Charles W. Appleton Men s Hockey Head Coach Mark Morris Record at St. Lawrence Overall at Home on the Road Mark Morris was named the Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Ice Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence in May of 2016, returning to the Saint program after a highly successful career as a collegiate and professional head coach. Morris, who served as an assistant coach to Joe Marsh from and was part of the 1988 national runner-up team, returned to the North Country after a year as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League. He holds the distinction of being the only coach to have won 300 college games and over 300 professional games. He was the seventh all-time winningest coach in the AHL and had the third highest win total among AHL coaches when he left Charlotte to take over at St. Lawrence. A Massena native and a 1981 graduate of Colgate University, Morris played defense for the Raiders and went on to a three year professional playing career which included stints with the Dallas Black Hawks and the New Haven Nighthawks before entering the coaching profession as an assistant coach at Union College in Morris spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Clarkson following his SLU tenure and compiled a collegiate career record of He broke into the professional coaching ranks as a coach with Manchester of the American Hockey League in 2006 where he spent eight years as head coach, compiling a record of with seven playoff appearances. He joined the Checkers in July of 2015 after serving the previous season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the NHL. He has also served as a special assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach with the Vancouver Canucks, an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League s Saginaw Spirit and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the season, became a full-time assistant in and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of A First Team All-America and First Team All- ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winningest teams in Saints hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All-Star Games, was named a Second Team AHL All-Star in and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans franchise history, wearing the C for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons. Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant Coach Matt Deschamps Matt Deschamps joined the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. He spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and served the club in director and development coordinator roles. Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with a.750 winning percentage playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada. Deschamps played for the University of Maine, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor s degree in public policy, management. He notched an assist on the triple-overtime goal to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the San Jose Sharks in During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. 4 Leading the D With his 31st career goal on Friday against Princeton, Gavin Bayreuther tied Brian McColgan 88 for the St. Lawrence program record with goals by a defensemen. Bayreuther is also currently leading the Saints in scoring with 13 points (4g, 9a) and is just five points away from reaching the 100-point plateau for his career. In a League of His Own After posting back-to-back shutouts for the first time since Alex Petizian did it in 2009 on this same Capitol District road trip, Kyle Hayton became the St. Lawrence program leader in career shutouts with 10. He passed Bill Sloan 56 who had previously held the record for 60 years with nine. Three of Sloan s nine shutouts were shared, while Hayton has been in net for the entirety of each of his 10. The Madhouse on Miner The Saints are this season in Appleton Arena after last weekend s sweep of Princeton and Quinnipiac, with a mark in nonconference games and against ECAC Hockey opponents. They re outscored teams through those six games this season. The Saints were in in their home barn, with an mark in conference games at home. Away From Appleton The Saints are in nonconference games on the road this season and have been outscored in those contests. St. Lawrence was in road games in Between the Pipes Junior netminder Kyle Hayton - an ECAC Hockey preseason All-Conference team member returns for the Saints this season, as does sophomore Arthur Brey who was solid as a backup for St. Lawrence in The goaltending tandem is joined by first-year Daniel Mannella out of Whitby in the OJHL. Richter Watch Kyle Hayton is one of 20 Division I goalies named to the Mike Richter Award Watch List for 2017, as announced by Let s Play Hockey and the Herb Brooks Foundation. He was also a nominee for the award in Past winners include: Thatcher Demko (Boston College), Zane McIntyre (North Dakota) and Connor Hellebuyck (UMass Lowell). Finkelstein in Florida As the 195th overall pick of the Florida Panthers in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL draft, Ben Finkelstein became the first drafted player to wear the Scarlet and Brown since defenseman Matt Generous 09 was drafted in He is the 52nd draft pick in program history. Finkelstein comes to St. Lawrence from Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire. The Newcomers The Saints added seven first-years to the roster for the season: Will Harrison, Ryan Garvey, Carson Gicewicz, Sam Kauppila, Ben Finkelstein, Taggart Corriveau and Daniel Mannella. Three rookies (Harrison, Garvey, Gicewicz) came to St. Lawrence via the USHL, two (Finkelstein and Corriveau) are straight out of U.S. prep schools in and Ontario natives Garvey and Mannella played int he OJHL prior to beginning their collegiate careers. Preseason All-ECAC Defenseman Gavin Bayreuther and goaltender Kyle Hayton were named to the ECAC Hockey preseason All-League team in September, as voted on by league coaches. The Saints and defending champion Quinnipiac were the only two league schools with multiple players on the list. The Bobcats were picked to finish first in the league, while the Saints were second in preseason voting. Returning All-American Gavin Bayreuther became the 35th All-American in Saints Hockey history last season after becoming the first defenseman to ever lead the team in scoring. The Caanan, N.H. native led the Saints with 12 goals and 17 assists for 29 points. It was Bayreuther who scored the double-overtime game winner in the quarterfinal series against rival Clarkson to send the Saints to Lake Placid and into the conference tournament for the second year in a row. The Saints Captains For the season the Saints named senior center and Eau Claire, Wis. native Alexander Dahl as the lone captain. Dahl served as an assistant during the season. Assistants for are a trio of senior blueliners in Gavin Bayreuther, Ben Masella and Eric Sweetman. Together, the four seniors accounted for 58 points last year, including 40 assists and blocked a total of 159 shots. 6 The Breakdown The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of seven seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and seven first-years. Seven of the team s 27 rostered players are Canadian, representing two provinces in Ontario and Quebec. The 20 Americans playing for the Saints this season represent 14 states: California, Connecticut, Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin. Sixteen players list a USHL team as their last team, while four played in the BCHL, three in the OJHL, one in the NAHL and three came from U.S. prep schools.
