Union will play against Michigan Tech in the first game of the tournament, on Friday, Oct. 6, at 5:07 p.m. (ET). No. 3 Minnesota and No. 6/12 Minnesota Duluth will play in the second game on Friday at 8:37 p.m. (ET). On Saturday, the Bulldogs will play the later game, while Minnesota will play in the earlier game. Media Coverage All four games this weekend will be streamed live on NCHC.tv for a fee. BU responded with its own power-play goal less than three minutes later to tie the game. The Terriers then took the lead off another power-play goal at the 12:11 mark of the third period, before scoring twice on an empty net for the 4-1 win. Jake Kupsky made a total of 39 saves in the contest. vs Michigan Tech Friday s contest will be the first meeting between Union and Michigan Tech in program history. Scouting Michigan Tech Michigan Tech was one of six teams to open the season last weekend. The Huskies played in a close game against Wisconsin, but lost to the Badgers, 3-2, in Madison, WI. Michigan Tech received scoring from leading returning-scorers Mark Auk and Joel L Esperance. In net, Patrick Munson made 24 saves for the Huskies and allowed three goals, two of which were on the power play. The Huskies received 60 points in the USCHO.com preseason poll, but did not receive any votes in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Scouting Minnesota Duluth The Bulldogs played the University of Alberta in an exhibition on Saturday, Sept. 30. Despite out-shooting the Golden Bears, 32-29, Minnesota Duluth ended up losing the exhibition match, 4-3. The Bulldogs played all three netminders, but freshman Ben Patt was the goalie of record after conceding three goals to Alberta in the third period. Top returning forward, Joey Anderson, who netted 12 goals and 25 assists last season, tallied just one assist in the exhibition loss. Minnesota Duluth was sixth in the USCO.com preseason poll, with one first-place vote, but after the exhibition loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 12th in the latest USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Scouting Minnesota The Gophers also started the new season off with an exhibition against the University of Alberta, playing the Golden Bears on Sunday, Oct. 1. Minnesota out-shot Alberta 26-23, but won the contest by a wide 6-2 margin. The game was tied 2-2 heading into the third period, but the Gophers potted four goals in the third period, including two power-play goals, for the win. Freshman Casey Mittelstadt led the Gophers with one goal and three assists in the game, while Brent Gates Jr. was the only Gopher to score more than one goal. Minnesota is the highest ranked team at the Ice Breaker Tournament, entering the weekend as the No. 3 team in the nation in both polls. Seeing things Cleary Union clinched a share of its fourth ECAC Hockey regular-season title with a 3-3 tie at Cornell on the final day of the regular season. The Dutchmen s four Cleary Cups are the most in ECAC Hockey since Fashionably Late The Dutchmen netted their 14th game-winning goal in the third period or overtime in game two of the ECACH Quarterfinals against Princeton. The 14 game-winners in the final third of the game ranked second in the nation last season. Union also ranked fourth in the nation with 140 third period points (52g, 88a) and was tied for fourth with 10 third period game-winning goals. Power Surge The Dutchmen ranked 12th in the nation last season with a.211 efficiency on the power play, scoring 41 goals on 194 opportunities. Sebastian Vidmar is Union s top returning power-play point getter, having recorded 18 points from four goals and 14 assists last year on the PP. Brett Supinski is the returning Union power-play goal scorer, with six PP goals to his name last season. Making History Mike Vecchione and Spencer Foo became first two Dutchmen to amass over 50 points in a season. Vecchione, who is the first Union skater with two career 50-point seasons, became the program s all-time leading scorer on the final day of the regular season, notching his 171st career point. He also established Union singleseason records for goals (29) and points (63), while Foo owns the program record for single-season assists (36). Foo also set a program record with a 21-game point streak this past season. Offensive Defenseman Jeff Taylor led ECAC Hockey defensemen with seven goals and five power-play goals, also finishing tied for the league high among blueliners with 22 points and two game-winning goals. He is also the second-highest scoring defenseman in program history (18G-74A) behind only Mat Bodie 14 (28g, 96a).

10 Head Coach Rick Bennet Rick Bennett completed his sixth season as Union College s men s hockey coach in , having taken the program to new heights. His.644 winning percentage ranks fifth-best among active Division I coaches. Bennett s accomplishments in six seasons are nothing short of amazing: a national championship, two Frozen Fours, four NCAA Tournament berths, three Whitelaw Cups and three Cleary Cups. He became the third Union hockey coach to reach 100 career victories with the Dutchmen s 5-3 win against then #3 Boston University on Oct. 10, 2015, and currently ranks as the second winningest coach in program history. Under Bennett s guidance, the squad captured a share of its fourth Cleary Cup as ECAC Hockey regular season champions in the last seven seasons. The Dutchmen finished fifth in Division I in win percentage (.697), producing their fourth 20-win campaign under Bennett, en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. Union s accomplishments earned Bennett ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year honors for the second time in his career. Additionally, senior forward Mike Vecchione (ECAC Hockey Player of the Year) and junior forward Spencer Foo were both selected as Hobey Baker Top-10 Finalists and CCM/AHCA First-Team All-Americans. Vecchione, who finished his career as the all-time leading scorer in program history, became Union s first ever Hobey Baker Hat Trick Finalist. In just his third season behind the helm, Bennett led Union to its first-ever NCAA Division I Championship, as top-ranked Union defeated second-ranked Minnesota, 7-4, on April 12, 2014 before 18,742 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. For his efforts, Bennett was named recipient of the 2014 Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Bennett completed the hat trick of major awards by also receiving Coach of the Year honors from College Hockey News and U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO). Bennett was named the fifth head coach in Union s Division I history on April 20, He has signed three extensions and is under contract for the next seven seasons through In , Bennett led the Dutchman program to its eighth-straight winning season, producing a 19-win campaign. Union also captured its first-ever road playoff series win (a sweep at Cornell), advancing to the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive year. The team also spent 10 weeks in the national polls and defeated five nationally-ranked opponents. Union defeated Rensselaer, 8-3, in the Capital District Mayor s Cup, improving Bennett s record against RPI to The season was unprecedented in Union s 71 years of varsity hockey. In addition to capturing the national title, Union finished with the most wins (32) and top winning percentage (.810) in the country. Union reached the No. 1 position in both national polls for the first time in the school s 23-year Division I history and spent 16 weeks ranked in the top 10. Bennett s squad finished second in NCAA scoring offense (3.81) and fourth in scoring defense (2.14 gpg).

11 Head Coach Rick Bennet (cont.) Union closed the season with a 17-game unbeaten streak (16-0-1), which also included a school-record 12-straight wins. The Dutchmen did not lose a game in February, March or April, going a perfect 8-0 in the postseason. Earlier in the season, Union strung together a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) and a nine-game win streak. The Garnet and White also won their last 12 games at Messa Rink. In clinching its second ECAC Hockey regular season crown in three seasons, Union set school records for conference wins (18) and points (37), scoring a league-high 83 goals (3.77 gpg) while surrendering a league-low 42 goals (1.91 gpg). Over the course of the season, Union won 12 season series (eight against league opponents), and clinched the Capital Skates Trophy against Rensselaer. Prior to being named head coach at Union, Bennett spent six seasons as an assistant on Nate Leaman s staff, starting with the campaign. Rick was promoted to associate head coach in Before arriving in Schenectady, Bennett served five seasons ( ) as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Providence. A native of Springfield, Mass., Bennett was a four-year letterwinner ( ) and co-captain at Providence, where he was recognized as a Hobey Baker finalist (1990) and two-time winner of the Lou Lamoriello Trophy as team MVP. He was named an All-American during the season and earned All-Hockey East Second Team honors in A left-winger, Bennett finished with 134 points (50 goals, 84 assists) in 128 career games. Bennett skated on the famed B-B-G line, along with center Mike Boback and right wing Robbie Gaudreau. Rick, who graduated with a B.A. in general studies, was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in Bennett was a third-round draft pick (54th overall) of the Minnesota North Stars in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. His draft rights were later traded to the New York Rangers. Bennett appeared in 15 games with the Rangers over three seasons ( , , ). Bennett s 10-year professional career also included stints with the Binghamton Rangers (AHL), Springfield Indians (AHL), Hershey Bears (AHL), Springfield Falcons (AHL), Albany River Rats (AHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (IHL), Jacksonville Lizard Kings (ECHL) and Pee Dee Pride (ECHL). Bennett served as an assistant coach for the Lizard Kings and Pride. Bennett is a member of the American Hockey Coaches Association and is in his third year on the Hobey Baker Selection Committee. He has also been involved with the United Way and the American Cancer Society s Coaches vs. Cancer campaign. Rick is married to Karyn, and has five children: Dan Mooney, Hayley, Brooke, Race and Lakyn. The Bennetts reside in Clifton Park, N.Y.
