3 ncaa midwest regional semifinal VERSUS penn state Union College traces its beginnings to Several hundred residents of northern New York, certain that Burgoyne s defeat at Saratoga two years before would mean a new nation, began the first popular demand for higher education in America. These residents pursued that dream for 16 years until, in 1795, Union became the first college chartered by the Regents of the State of New York. The first trustees consciously attempted to bring their new college into the mainstream of their world. The very name, Union, carried echoes of the new national union. More immediately and directly, it recognized the fact that the College was an outgrowth of a new sense of community among the several religious and national groups in the local population. Union s founders were determined to avoid the narrow sectarianism characteristic of earlier American colleges; today, Union is one of the oldest nondenominational colleges in the country. Union did not share the heavily classical bias of most colleges of the day. Its motto ( Sous les lois de Minerve nous devenons tous freres et soeurs, or Under the laws of Minerva, we all become brothers and sisters ) is significantly of French rather than Latin origin. Union was among the first to introduce French on an equal level with Greek and Latin. In the 1820s, when the classical curriculum was the most widely accepted field of study, Union introduced a bachelor s degree with greater emphasis on history, science, modern languages, and mathematics. This liberality of educational vision characterized Union during the early years of the term of Eliphalet Nott, president from 1804 to Science and technology became important concerns; chemistry was taught before 1809, a degree in scientific studies was added, and in 1845 Union became the first liberal arts college to offer engineering. The College was one of the first to offer work in American history and constitutional government and did pioneer work in the elective system of study. By about 1830, Union was graduating as many students as any other college in America. Along with Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, it was spoken of as one of the big four. Students came from the South and West as well as the East. Among them were the father of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the grandfather of Winston Churchill, a president of the United States (Chester A. Arthur, Class of 1848), seven cabinet secretaries, 15 United States senators, 91 members of the House of Representatives, 13 governors, 50 important diplomats, more than 200 judges, 40 missionaries, 16 generals, and 90 college presidents, including the first presidents of the Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Vassar, Smith and Elmira. Nott s ingenious schemes for financing higher education, including a statewide lottery, also were instrumental in building Union s reputation. Innovations under the leadership of Andrew Van Vranken Raymond, president from 1894 to 1907 include the establishment of a Department of Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, headed by the electrical wizard of the General Electric Company, Charles P. Steinmetz. The new department gave impetus to the development of strong programs in science and technology and attracted attention and applications to the College. Stephen C. Ainlay President Strom Thacker Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty of two dozen women transfer students. Today, roughly half of Union s students are women. More recently, the College has added programs in Asian Studies, Bioengineering, Film Studies, Nanotechnology, and Neuroscience. In 2004, the Minervas were inaugurated to broaden the educational experience for students, faculty and staff. Every incoming student is assigned to one of seven Minerva Houses, joining upperclass students, faculty and staff in a house affiliation. Each Minerva, with its own budget and governing council, is a center for intellectual and social activity. Union s fraternities and sororities continue a proud tradition of service. Theme Houses are a popular option for students who seek residential affiliation with others who are committed to themes such as community service, environmental awareness, art, music and language. The College has done important experimental work in interdepartmental studies, which is reflected in a number of programs that cut across the lines of academic disciplines. Organized interdepartmental majors are offered in numerous areas, and the College has also developed programs that enable students to work toward both a bachelor s degree and an advanced degree. The Common Curriculum (General Education) has received national recognition, and the College has an innovative program of Writing Across the Curriculum. Efforts to renew and enhance the College s academic programs and curricula continue to be supported by major foundations. The 20th century brought other changes to Union. In 1970, the College adopted co-education and welcomed the first class UNION DUTCHMEN HOCKEY

28 TEAM NOTES A chat with Union hockey s Mike Vecchione - Tim Wilkin - Times Union (1/14/17) Q: Your name and the Hobey Baker Award (college hockey s version of the Heisman Trophy) are mentioned in the same breath by a lot of people who follow your sport. What are your thoughts on that? A: It s an honor. It s something that I dreamed about growing up. I didn t think it would be a reality at this point. But, coming back (for senior season) was one of the things I wanted to strive for. I always say that team success leads to individual success. The better the team does, the better I ll do. That is my main focus right now. Q: Any good? A: I was pretty good. Some of the boys will attest to that. I played shortstop. I had a pretty decent arm and I could swing the bat like no one else. Q: You could? Home runs? A: Oh, yeah. Absolutely. That s what I go for. Q: Power hitter. Ever hit any really big shots? A: There was this one that I don t know if it fell yet. We were in Salem, a Q: There may be people who were surprised that you came back for your little north of Boston and we were playing in this ballpark that was pretty senior year instead of going pro. Why did you come back? big. I hit a ball. First pitch. First at-bat. It was the most memorable swing. A: I just have loyalty to the program, and I don t think I was ready to leave It went far. It might have been 400 (feet). yet. I wanted to finish what I started here. I felt it would be best for me to come back and get that degree (liberal arts). Everyone I talked to guys Q: Did you watch it? who went all through college and guys who left early said there was A: I did. nothing like playing college hockey and you only have four years of it. Looking at the pros and cons, I was like, Why waste my senior year to go Q: The pitcher must have loved that. play pro? A: Well, he was looking at the ball, too. He didn t see what I was doing. Let me tell you, I got all of that ball. That sweet spot. I crushed it. That Q: You like college. was a beauty. A: Yeah. It s an unreal atmosphere. I love the school and I love my teammates. I just wasn t quite ready to leave yet. Q: If there was a movie made about your life and you could pick the actor to play you, who would it be? Q: So, you really couldn t come up with a reason to leave even though pro A: Ever since I was little, I have always been a big Adam Sandler fan. My hockey has been a dream of yours since you were a kid. family says I look like him and act like him. If that movie was to be made, A: Yeah. Definitely. I felt like I could have went and played pro and done everyone who knows me would pick Adam Sandler. I would, too. pretty well, but at the same time, I could not find a reason to leave my senior year. I am relatively young (23) and I am hoping I will have a long Q: Favorite sports movie. career after college. And, if not, I will have my degree to fall back on. A: That s kind of a tough one. Miracle is up there. I was a big fan of Caddyshack. I thought that was hilarious. Happy Gilmore. Youngblood Q: You have had a lot of different jobs over your summers, haven t you? was one of my favorites. I watched it when I was pretty young. When Detailing cars? I watched it, my dad (Joe) said, See what happens when you use your A: Yeah. I worked at a car dealership and, at the other end, at a rental car speed? Nobody could catch Youngblood out there. service. I needed money. I was out playing juniors and when I came home, I needed a job. We would have 12-passenger, 16-passenger vans come in Q: If you could have one super power, which would it be? and we would have to clean them out, vacuum, get stains out of the rug, A: I would just love to fly. Just be able to get up, go where ever I wanted, clean up the whole dashboard, give it a full wash and then put it out for whenever I wanted. If I had the Superman power to fly, it would make the next customer. I did that for a full summer. It was a tough job. I would travel a lot easier. Get to places quicker. Spend a lot less money on gas, bring the car into the garage, and it would still be like 120 degrees inside that s for sure. the car. You open it up, and it s just burning. It was a pretty grueling job, but I had a blast with it. Q: Any superstitions? A: Kind of. I will wear the same suit when we re on a winning streak. Same Q: Is your car always clean? suit, tie, shirt combo. I have my same routine every day. I take my nap, eat A: (laughs). Yeah. I keep it pretty clean. I get the inside washed. I don t at a certain time, take a nap, get to the rink at a certain time. wash the outside myself, I go to the car wash. I ve done plenty of washing other people s cars. I can pay a couple bucks. Q: If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? Q: In your locker room, are you a funny guy? A: I like to see Bobby Orr. I got to meet him briefly once or twice. My A: I am. I think me and Sak (goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos) joke around, even grandfather died at a young age, so I didn t get to know him that well. on game days. We don t like to change it up. When it comes down to game I know he has always been looking over me. I would like to see what he time, we re ready, but we don t try to get too serious. I can get serious thinks of the success I have had. Ariana Grande has been on the radio a when I need to be, but I play my best when I m loose. lot. She is my age. I think we would be able to hit it off pretty well. I have Bobby Orr sitting next to me and my grandfather was a smooth talker. Q: Since you are expert on Boston sports, if you had to pick the most icon- They could help me out a lot. I would try to persuade her to go on another ic sports figure in Boston history, who would it be? date with me, but just me and her. A: I think Bobby Orr. Obviously, being a hockey player. And he has a statue outside of the Garden. Q: If you were to win the Hobey Baker, what would you say? A: I would have to thank the people who have helped me get to the point Q: Favorite sport other than hockey. where I am. I would thank my family, friends, trainers, coaching staff here, A: I was always a baseball guy growing up. I played all the time. my teammates. I would kind of be at a loss for words. It would definitely be a little emotional. It s been a long road. It would be pretty awesome to see it all come together with an award like that UNION DUTCHMEN HOCKEY 26

29 ncaa midwest regional semifinal VERSUS penn state Q: If you were on any other team, you would be the man. (Foo has scored 22 goals and has 34 assists. Teammate Mike Vecchione has 26 goals and 32 assists.) Are you OK with that? A: Yeah. Veccs is obviously an amazing player, and it s pretty special to play alongside of him. From the time I have been here, I have learned a lot from him. I have gotten to play with him in parts of every year. He can make players better. I attribute a lot of my success to what Veccs has done for me. It s an absolute honor to play with him. He deserves all the credit that he gets. Q: You have put up some pretty good numbers yourself. Who is the better player? A: That s a tough one. I guess I will go with Veccs for now. Hopefully I can catch him. Q: Why Union College for you? A: Union was the first place that really looked at me and committed to me in junior hockey. I was able to fly down here, and it was the year they won the national championship (2014). I fell in love with the campus. I loved that it was a small school, and everything seemed to fit for me. Q: Growing up, why hockey? A: Good question. My dad came from Guyana in South America. He came to Toronto when he was 7 years old. His family just kind of fell in love with hockey. Ever since I was young, it was the sport that we played. I grew up in Edmonton. Growing up in Canada is obviously a big reason why (I played hockey). I remember watching hockey when I was young with my dad and my uncle. Q: You were sold on the game from an early age. A: Definitely. I was always a hockey guy. I never really knew anything else. Q: What do you like doing more, scoring a goal or making a great pass? A: I want to say they are both just as good. I like celebrating after a goal, so that might put scoring over the edge. As long as the puck goes into the net, it s all fun and games. Q: When you say you like to celebrate goals... do you have your own thing? A: Not really, I like to mix it up a little bit. Q: Favorite sport to watch? A: I love watching baseball. I m a big Blue Jays fan. Q&A with Union hockey s Spencer Foo - Tim Wilkin - Times Union (3/5/17) Q: If you could have one super power, what would it be? A: Probably to see into the future. Q: Really. Why? A: We ve been into a lot of gambling movies recently, and it would be a pretty cool way to make some money. (Smiles.) Q: Find out who wins this year s Kentucky Derby a little earlier than everyone else. A: Exactly. Exactly. Q: If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? A: No. 1 would be Sidney Crosby. I would love to talk hockey with him. No. 2 would be Kanye West. I would love to talk to him and see what is in his head and what is going on with him. And No. 3 would be Kevin Hart. A big fan. Dinner with him would be pretty entertaining. Q: Place on earth you have never been that you would like to see? A: I would love to see Guyana. Would love to go to Thailand, too. Have heard a lot of good things about it. Would be a lot of fun. Q: Favorite pro hockey team? A: Big Edmonton Oilers fan. Always an Oilers fan growing up. Q: Favorite holiday? A: Christmas. Q: What do you see yourself doing in 10 years? A: I see myself playing in the NHL if everything goes well. That has always been my goal. Q: Favorite sports movie? A: I am a Canadian guy, but probably Miracle. Q: If you could have a breakaway against any goalie in history, who would it be? A: That s a good one. Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens). I think he s the best goalie in the NHL right now. I would love to test him out. Q: Give yourself a chance to beat him? A: Might take me a couple tries, but I would. Eventually. Q: Funniest guy on your team? A: Probably Sako (goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos). He s always joking around about something. He is a sick character. Fun to be around. Q: Best dresser on your team? A: Hate to pump this guy s tires, but probably Jake Kupsky. He ll get a big head if he hears about this. He dresses well. Q: Where do you put yourself on the list? A: Probably pretty high up there. Q: Who is the worst? A: Mike Pontarelli. Easily. Just doesn t have great style. Doesn t seem to care how he looks a whole bunch. (Smiles.) Seems to kind of take whatever clothing is on the ground and throws it on. No good UNION DUTCHMEN HOCKEY
