The Golden Knights picked up the victory in the first meeting between the two teams this season on Nov. 12, The loss snapped Union s five game ECAC Hockey unbeaten streak. The loss snapped the Saints five game unbeaten streak (3-0-2). St. Lawrence has gone to overtime six times this season, tying all six games (tied for most in Division I). St. Lawrence goaltender Kyle Hayton is tied for third in Division I in shutouts (4) and tied for eighth in save percentage (.933). 3 TEAM NOTES CHART CLIMBERS Union vaulted into the top five in the national ranking, moving from No. 9 to No. 5 in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Division I polls released Monday. The top five ranking is the first for the Dutchmen since it Oct. 27, 2014 (No. 2). Union also sits sixth in the latest PairWise rankings. ROAD WARRIORS Union is in ECAC Hockey road games, outscoring its opponents in those contests. The Dutchmen s 4.80 goals per game average in conference games is second in Division I behind only Ohio State (5.00). FASHIONABLY late The Dutchmen netted their Division I-leading 10th game-winning goal in the third period or overtime on Thursday. Union is also tied for second in the nation with eight third-period game-winning goals (Air Force), trailing only Vermont (9). The Dutchmen also lead Division I with 22 goals, 34 assists, 56 points and six game-winning goals in the final five minutes of the third. ECAC HOCKEY Spencer Foo leads ECAC Hockey with 25 points and 16 assists in conference games, while Mike Vecchione is second with 23 points. Both players have nine conference goals, which is tied for second, while Jeff Taylor is tied for the conference high with three game-winning goals. Goaltender Alex Sakellaropoulos is (.875) against league opponents this season, with a 2.15 goalsagainst average and a.934 save percentage. THE BIG THREE Union s top line of Vecchione, Foo and Sebastian Vidmar is averaging 4.50 points per game, combining for 108 points on 44 goals and 64 assists, also producing 12 power-play goals and nine game-winning goals. KIND OF A BIG DEAL Vecchione and Foo are among the nation s leaders in almost every major offensive category. Vecchione, who became the 13th 100-point scorer in Union s Division I era last season, is the NCAA Division I active leader in career points (154) and ranks tied for second in career goals (60), second in career assists (94) and tied for third in shorthanded goals (6). 5 COACH RICK BENNETT HEAD COACH RICK BENNETT Rick Bennett enter his sixth season as Union College s men s hockey coach, having taken the program to new heights. completed the hat trick of major awards by also receiving Coach of the Year honors from College Hockey News and U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO). For his efforts, Bennett was named recipient of the 2014 Spencer Penrose Award as National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) and the Coach of the Year by College Hockey News and U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO). In , Bennett led the Dutchman program to its eighth-straight winning season, producing a 19-win campaign. Union also captured its first-ever road playoff series win (a sweep at Cornell), advancing to the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals for the eighth consecutive year. The team also spent 10 weeks in the national polls and defeated five nationallyranked opponents. Union defeated Rensselaer, 8-3, in the Capital District Mayor s Cup, improving Bennett s record against RPI to The season was unprecedented in Union s 63 years of varsity hockey. In addition to capturing the national title, Union finished with the most wins (32) and top winning percentage (.810) in the country. Union reached the No. 1 position in both national polls for the first time in the school s 23-year Division I history and spent 16 weeks ranked in the top 10. Union closed the season with a 17-game unbeaten streak (16-0-1), which also included a school-record 12-straight wins. The Dutchmen did not lose a game in February, March or April, going a perfect 8-0 in the postseason. Earlier in the season, Union strung together a 10-game unbeaten streak (9-0-1) and a nine-game win streak. The Garnet and White also won their last 12 games at Messa Rink. Bennett owns a five-year record of (.646), becoming the third Union hockey coach to reach 100 career victories with the Dutchmen s 5-3 win against then third-ranked Boston University on Oct. 10, He holds a 22-6 postseason record and is 15-6 in the ECAC Hockey Tournament. He has also won 60 percent of his league games in ECAC Hockey ( ). Bennett s record against nationally-ranked teams stands at (.631). In just his third season behind the helm, Bennett led Union to its first-ever NCAA Division I Championship, as top-ranked Union defeated second-ranked Minnesota, 7-4, on April 12, 2014 before 18,742 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. For his efforts, Bennett was named recipient of the 2014 Spencer Penrose Award as well as the National Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA). Bennett was a four-year letterwinner ( ) and co-captain at Providence, where he was recognized as a Hobey Baker finalist (1990) and two-time winner of the Lou Lamoriello Trophy as team MVP. He was named an All-American during the season and earned All-Hockey East Second Team honors in A left-winger, Bennett finished with 134 points (50 goals, 84 assists) in 128 career games and was inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012.
