1 St. Lawrence Saints Men s Hockey Game Notes at #5 QUICK HITS The Saints are still searching for their first win after a pair of tough losses to nationally-ranked Hockey East opponents in Providence and UMass Lowell at home last weekend. The Saints fell in overtime, 6-5, to the Friars on Friday, before being shut out by the River Hawks on Saturday night, 5-0. Friday s game against Providence marked the first time the Saints had scored more than one goal in a game, and the first time they had scored in the first period this season. The overtime loss was the first for St. Lawrence since falling to Harvard, 2-1, in the ECAC semifinal on March 18, The Saints played seven overtime games in and all seven ended in a tie. The last time St. Lawrence started a season 0-6 was in , when the team went 0-7 and was before recording its first win in mid-december. This is also the first time the Saints have lost six conseutive games since a seven-game losing streak during the season that spanned from Nov. 30 to Jan. 25. St. Lawrence snapped that streak by beating eventual National Champion Union, 2-1 on Jan. 31. St. Lawrence last came to Madison to open the season for a two-game set against the Badgers. The teams split that series, with Wisconsin winning the first game 3-2 and St. Lawrence taking the second 2-1. Wisconsin is coming off a weekend split with Northern Michigan, and also lost in overtime last Friday night. The Badgers scored two late in the third period to tie it, but NMU tallied the game winner with 18 seconds to play in the overtime. They responded with a 4-0 shutout win on Saturday. Location... 2 ABOUT WISCONSIN All but two skaters have recorded at least one point for the Badgers on the season. Eleven players have two or more. Trent Frederic leads the team with eight points on four goals and four assists. Wisconsin has scored three or more goals in all but one of its games this season and is tied for 6th in the nation in scoring offense (3.57). The Badgers are 11th in scoring defense (2.14), 26th on the power play (18.5) and 19th on the penalty kill (84.4). They ve scored four power play goals in the last three games. Former Saint Kyle Hayton is in between the pipes for Wisconsin this season with a.907 save percentage and 2.47 GAA. Backup goaltender Jack Berry earned the shutout win over Northern Michigan on Saturday. THE SERIES WITH THE BADGERS Last season, Wisconsin scored three goals in the third period, including one shorthanded and one on the power play, to snap a 2-2 tie en route to a 5-2 win. This is the Saints first trip to Madison since they opened the regular season with a two-game set against the Badgers. The teams split that series, with Wisconsin winning the first game 3-2 and St. Lawrence taking the second 2-1. St. Lawrence s first win against the Badgers was a 7-0 shutout on March 26, 1988 in the NCAA Tournament. 3 Men s Hockey Staff Charles W. Appleton Men s Hockey Head Coach Mark Morris Record at St. Lawrence Overall at Home on the Road on Neutral Ice Mark Morris is in his second season as the Charles W. Appleton II Head Men s Ice Hockey Coach at St. Lawrence. He was hired in May of 2016, returning to the Saints program after a highly successful career as a collegiate and professional head coach. Morris, who served as an assistant coach to Joe Marsh from and was part of the 1988 national runner-up team, returned to the North Country after a year as head coach of the Charlotte Checkers in the American Hockey League. He holds the distinction of being the only coach to have won 300 college games and over 300 professional games. He was the seventh all-time winningest coach in the AHL and had the third highest win total among AHL coaches when he left Charlotte to take over at St. Lawrence. A Massena native and a 1981 graduate of Colgate University, Morris played defense for the Raiders and went on to a three year professional playing career which included stints with the Dallas Black Hawks and the New Haven Nighthawks before entering the coaching profession as an assistant coach at Union College in Morris spent 13 seasons as the head coach at Clarkson following his SLU tenure and compiled a collegiate career record of He broke into the professional coaching ranks as a coach with Manchester of the American Hockey League in 2006 where he spent eight years as head coach, compiling a record of with seven playoff appearances. He joined the Checkers in July of 2015 after serving the previous season as an assistant coach with the Florida Panthers in the NHL. He has also served as a special assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach with the Vancouver Canucks, an assistant coach with the Ontario Hockey League s Saginaw Spirit and coached at the Northwood School in Lake Placid. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut Hurlbut returned to his alma mater as a volunteer assistant coach to start the season, became a full-time assistant in and was named Associate Head Coach in the spring of A First Team All-America and First Team All- ECAC selection for the Saints in 1989 and a member of the two winningest teams in Saints hockey history in 1988 and 1989, Mike is a 1989 graduate of St. Lawrence and had a long and successful professional hockey career. He spent 14 years in the International and American hockey leagues and played 29 games, scoring one goal and assisting on eight others, in the National Hockey League. He was inducted into the Rochester Americans Hall of Fame in He was selected to play in three American Hockey League All-Star Games, was named a Second Team AHL All-Star in and was the longest serving captain in Rochester Americans franchise history, wearing the C for five seasons. He was a team captain in eight of his 13 pro seasons. Among the teams he played for were the Houston Aeros, Minnesota Moose, Binghamton Rangers and the Rochester Americans. He played 23 games with the New York Rangers in and also had NHL appearances with the Quebec Nordique and the Buffalo Sabres. Assistant Coach Matt Deschamps Matt Deschamps joined the St. Lawrence staff as an assistant coach prior to the season. He spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and served the club in director and development coordinator roles. Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with a.750 winning percentage playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada. Deschamps played for the University of Maine, graduating in 2005 with a bachelor s degree in public policy, management. He notched an assist on the triple-overtime goal to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the San Jose Sharks in During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. The Saints were in non-conference games in October in , with a 1-3 record on the road. DID YOU KNOW? Sophomore Taggart Corriveau scored his first collegiate goal against Wisconsin last season on the power play. Joe Sullivan also scored for St. Lawrence in that game. Associate Head Coach Mike Hurlbut was a member of the team that earned the program s first win over the Badgers in March 1988 in the NCAA Tournament. The Saints advanced to the championship game, finishing at the national runner-up. Head Coach Mark Morris is the parent of a Wisconsin alum. His daughter, Emily, Class of 2008, was a defenseman on the Badgers women s hockey team and was part of two National Championship teams. All eight skaters in the freshman class have played in at least one game this season and three of them have points. Defenseman Bo Hanson is the only rookie with a goal so far. RETURNING SCORERS The Saints returned seven of their eight top scorers from last season, including Joe Sullivan and Mike Marnell who finished tied for second behind Gavin Bayreuther with 27 points each. Marnell led the Saints with 15 goals last season and also finished with a team-high four power play goals and three shorthanded tallies. He was tied for second in ECAC Hockey and fifth in the nation for shorthanded goals. Ben Finkelstein, Jacob Pritchard, Nolan Gluchowski, Michael Ederer and Carson Gicewicz are also among the top returning scorers. Finkelstein led all Saints rookies with 23 points last season. Ederer, who scored just two goals in his rookie season, had a breakout sophmore campaign with nine goals and nine assists for 18 points. BETWEEN THE PIPES Record-setting All-American goaltender Kyle Hayton graduated from St. Lawrence in the summer of 2017 and is using the last year of eligibility as a graduate transfer at the University of Wisconsin while pursuing an MBA, opening the door for Arthur Brey, Daniel Mannella and newcomer Cameron Gray. Brey, who has gotten the starting nod in each of the Saints first six games this season, played four games for the Saints in , including two starts. He was in those game and finished his sophomore season with a 2.08 GAA and.935 save percentage. Daniel Mannella made just one appearance for the Saints last season, coming in in relief of Hayton at Providence in October. He made seven saves in just over 13 minutes of action and did not allow a goal. He has made two relief appearances so far in Gray joins the Saints goaltending corps after spending last season with the OJHL s Toronto Patriots. In 30 appearances he made 28 starts with 1743:36 minutes played, posted a record, a 2.99 goals-against average and.914 save percentage. 5 FINKELSTEIN IN FLORIDA As the 195th overall pick of the Florida Panthers in the seventh round of the 2016 NHL draft, Ben Finkelstein became the first drafted player to wear the Scarlet and Brown since defenseman Matt Generous 09 was drafted in He is the 52nd draft pick in program history. SAINTS AT DEVELOPMENT CAMPS Ben Finkelstein, Carson Gicewicz and Mike Marnell each participated in NHL Development Camps over the summer. Finkelstein went to the Panthers development camp while Gicewicz attended the Dallas Stars camp with recent alum Gavin Bayreuther and Marnell went to the New York Islanders camp. THE NEWCOMERS The Saints added nine first-years to the roster for the start of the season: Philip Alftberg, Callum Cusinato, Cade Gleekel, Cameron Gray, Bo Hanson, Jacob Nielsen, Jake Stevens, Keenan Suthers and Dylan Woolf. The class is comprised of four forwards, four defensemen and a goaltender and hails from three countries, represents five states and played in three different junior hockey leagues last season. Alftberg (Sweden) is the first European player to wear the Scarlet and Brown since Slovenian winger Ziga Petac 04. Suthers is the first skater taller than 6-6 since Joel Prpic 97. THE BREAKDOWN The current St. Lawrence roster is composed of six seniors, five juniors, six sophomores and nine first-years. Seven of the team s 26 rostered players are Canadian; all from Ontario. The 18 Americans playing for the Saints this season represent 11 states: California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Texas, Vermont and Wisconsin. Thirteen players list a USHL team as their last team, while four played in the BCHL, five in the OJHL, one in the NAHL, one in the CCHL and two came from U.S. prep schools. St. Lawrence recorded an eight-game PPG streak from December - January which matched a streak by the team. Four Saints finished the season playing above a +10, including Mike Marnell, Joe Sullivan and Nolan Gluchowski, all of whom return for The Saints finished overall in Appleton Arena last season and outscored opponents in those games.
