The Series Friday s game marks the 56th meeting between Colgate and Army, with the Raiders dominating the series Last season, the Black Knights snapped a 16-game winless streak against the Raiders that dated back to 1987 with a 3-2 win in Starr Rink. Marc Fulton put Colgate up 1-0 in the first period, and Adam Mitchell made it 2-1 in the Raiders favor entering the final session. However, an early goal by David Andros tied it up, and Seth Beamer scored the game-winner at the 12:23 mark to hand Colgate just its second loss of the season. Andros has graduated, and Beamer is now a senior for Army. Mark Dekanich finished with 10 saves in the game, which marked his first career start. Colgate holds a advantage in games played at West Point, including victories in each of the last eight games played at Tate Rink. Scouting the Black Knights Army opened the season last weekend with a pair of losses at the Maverick Stampede, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha. The Black Knights lost their season-opener, 3-2, to UNO, then lost the consolation game to Ferris State, 5-2. Sophomore Bryce Hollweg scored a power-play goal in each of the two games, and Brady Dolim added the other two goals. Luke Flicek assisted on both goals against Ferris State, and helped set up Army s second goal versus Nebraska-Omaha. Casey Bickley assisted on each of Hollweg s goals, and Chris Migliaro, Aaron Anderson and Tim Manthey each picked up assists on the weekend. Senior Brad Roberts started both games in goal. He made 66 saves on the weekend, including 37 in the season-opener. He enters Friday s game with a 4.03 goals against average and.892 save percentage. The Last Time Out Colgate played to a 2-2 tie and a 3-2 loss against Lake Superior State in its first road weekend of the season, and its first-ever trip to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Prior to this weekend, Colgate had won all five meetings between the two schools. On Friday, the two teams exhanged power-play goals in the first period before LSSU pulled ahead by one early in the second. Sophomore Jesse Winchester scored the game-tying goal on a dump-in 5:48 into the third. While both teams had plenty of scoring chances during the remainder of regulation and the overtime session, neither could get the puck in the net. The next night, the two teams combined for 42 penalty minutes, so special teams was a featured element of the game. All five goals were scored in odd-man situations, with the first four coming on the power play. Colgate junior Marc Fulton scored first, 4:26 into the game, but LSSU tied it up less than six minutes later, and added a goal in each of the next two periods to go up 3-1. With goaltender Mark Dekanich pulled, the Raiders managed to score an extra-attacker goal, but Tyler Burton took a delay of game penalty with 35 seconds left that served to neutralize Colgate s advantage in its quest for the equalizer. Road Warriors Friday s game marks the second weekend of a month-long stretch in which Colgate plays seven of eight games on the road. The Raiders started the swing in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., where they recorded a tie and a loss against Lake Superior State. Next weekend, Colgate will stop in Hamilton to take on Bentley on Oct. 9 before playing its first four ECAC Hockey League games away from home. The Raiders open the conference slate at Brown and Yale and finish the road swing at Dartmouth and Harvard. Poll Position Following its weekend, Colgate saw an expected drop in the polls. The Raiders fell out of the top 20 in the USCHO.com/CSTV media poll, but are still receiving 62 votes. Colgate received no votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine coaches poll. Last season, Smyth was named to both the ECACHL and USCHO preseason teams. Raider Flashback: December 28, 1991 After losing a hard-fought, overtime game to Ohio State in the first game, Colgate entered its matchup against Army in the consolation game of the 1991 Syracuse Invitational Tournament. The game came just three weeks after long-time head coach Terry Slater passed away due to a stroke, and it was the team s third game without Slater on the bench. Emotions were still running high, and the Raiders channeled those emotions by putting points on the scoreboard against the Black Knights. Early in the game, Colgate scored two goals within 38 seconds to go up 2-0. They finished the first period with a 3-0 lead, as current assistant coaches Brad Dexter and Andrew Dickson each picked up an assist in the opening session. The second period featured non-stop offense. Marcel Richard netted a short-handed goal to put Colgate up 5-1, and Army s Rick Randazzo responded with a powerplay tally to keep it a three-goal game. However, the rest of the period was all Colgate, as Bruce Gardiner and Ron Fogarty each scored within seven seconds, and Fogarty added another goal to give the Raiders control of the scoreboard to the tune of 8-2. It was 9-2 before Army found the back of the net again, 6:31 into the third period on a power play. Colgate s Dan Gardner hung the Raiders 10th goal on the board with less than 2:30 on the clock to make it a 10-3 final. Colgate has scored 10 goals in a game three times since the win against Army. The Raiders defeated Plattsburgh State 14-3 the next season, earned a 10-7 victory against Brown during the campaign, and beat Merrimack on the road, 10-7, on January 11, Bumps and Bruises Sophomore forward Ben Camper is questionable for Friday s game with an injury. 7 GAME 1 #18 Colgate 6 #16 UMass-Lowell 2 Friday, October 7, 2005 Starr Rink Hamilton, N.Y. Junior Marc Fulton recorded his first career fourpoint game to lead No. 18 Colgate to a 6-2 victory against 16th-ranked UMass-Lowell. The win marked Colgate s first win against UML since Mark Dekanich earned the win in net with 32 saves, including 20 through two scoreless periods. The Raiders dominated in the faceoff circle, winning 46 draws to Lowell s 28. Freshman Tom Riley won eight of his nine attempts, and sophomore Tyler Burton won 17 of his 23 draws. Fulton opened the game s scoring. Senior Ryan Smyth beat his defenseman outside the zone and centered the puck to Fulton. Fulton one-timed it in from the far side under goalie Peter Vetri s blocker. CU s second goal came after Smyth won the puck out of the corner and centered it to Fulton, who was waiting in the slot. Fulton went five-hole on Vetri to make it 2-0 in favor of the Raiders. Freshman Nick St. Pierre earned his first career point with an assist on CU s third goal, which was a power-play score by Jesse Winchester. St. Pierre passed the puck out of the corner to Winchester, whose initial shot was saved. He got his own rebound and put the puck over the goalie s blocker. Senior Kyle Wilson got his first goal of the season with 3:11 left in the second. Junior Mike Campaner picked up the puck in the neutral zone. He passed it to Fulton along the boards, who tipped it to Wilson. Wilson took it in by himself on a breakaway, and scored low on the blocker side. Burton made it a 5-0 Colgate lead 3:03 into the third period. Senior Jon Smyth walked the puck around from behind the net and centered it to Burton, who one-timed it over Vetri s blocker. Winchester was also credited with an assist, giving him his first career multiple-point game. Lowell got on the board 52 seconds later. Dekanich was knocked out of position by one of his own defensemen. Mark Pandolfo came from behind the net and put the puck over his blocker. Wilson scored Colgate s sixth goal 14:58 into the final period on a power play. Wilson came around from the side of the net and put the puck over Vetri s shoulder. Freshman Jason Fredricks was credited with his first career assist on the play. The final goal of the night came when UML s Jeremy Hall redirected a shot by Kim Brandvold. GAME 2 #16 Colgate 2 Lake Superior St. 2 OT Friday, October 14, 2005 Abel Arena Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Raider sophomore goaltender Mark Dekanich made 30 saves as No. 16 Colgate skated to a 2-2 tie with Lake Superior State on Friday, Oct. 14, at Abel Arena. Sophomore Jesse Winchester scored the game-tying goal for Colgate early in the third period. The Lakers struck first in the game on a power-play goal by Trent Campbell 5:14 into the first period. Derek R. Smith held the puck behind Colgate s goal, faked to the right, then swung around to the left. He passed to Troy Schwab, who fired, but the rebound came to Campbell. Colgate scored the equalizer 6:26 later on a five-on-three power play. Senior Eric Main passed to junior Marc Fulton in the right faceoff circle. Fulton s shot rebounded off Jeff Jakaitis pads to the stick of senior Kyle Wilson waiting on the left side of the crease, and he scored into the empty net. The Raiders killed off a five-minute major penalty by sophomore Matt Torti, who left the game on a 10-minute misconduct call, late in the period to enter the first intermission with a 1-1 tie. LSSU went up 2-1, 6:17 into the second period. Schwab picked up the puck near the Raider blue line on a Colgate turnover. He passed it to Smith in the high slot, who one-timed it, beating Dekanich stick-side. The Raiders tied it up again on what can only be described as a fluke goal. Winchester had the puck just over the red line, and dumped it in for Colgate to make a line change, and it dribbled past Jakaitis and into the net 5:48 into the third. Both teams had several quality scoring chances during the remainder of regulation and in the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood tall between the pipes and turned aside every shot they saw. Jakaitis finished with 20 saves in his season debut. Lake Superior State outshot Colgate on the night. Colgate (1-0-1) Lake Superior St. (0-0-1) First Period: L-Campbell (Schwab, D.R. GAME 3 Lake Superior St. 3 #16 Colgate 2 Saturday, October 15, 2005 Abel Arena Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. All five goals were scored in odd-man situations as Lake Superior State recorded a 3-2 win over the No. 16 Colgate hockey team on Saturday, Oct. 15, at Abel Arena. Dominic Osman appeared to put the game out of reach when he buried his own rebound at the 16:52 mark of the third period. On the initial shot, Raider goaltender Mark Dekanich looked behind him, giving Osman the opportunity to pick up the puck and put it in the net glove-side. However, the Raiders pulled Dekanich and took advantage of the extra skater. Sophomore Jesse Winchester passed the puck from the right side to freshman Nick St. Pierre, waiting at the left point. St. Pierre fired, and the puck was tipped by senior captain Jon Smyth as it went by Laker goalie Jeff Jakaitis. The Raiders pulled Dekanich again, looking for the equalizer, but a delay-of-game penalty by sophomore Tyler Burton served to neutralize the would-be advantage. Colgate was the first to get on the board 4:26 into the game. Senior Kyle Wilson and junior Marc Fulton passed the puck back and forth between the area behind the right side of the net and the right faceoff circle. Fulton eventually took one of Wilson s passes and fired the puck over Jakaitis left shoulder. LSSU tied it up midway through the opening session. The Lakers were cycling the puck on the power play. Mark Adamek passed to Derek A. Smith at the left point, who sent it over to Jeff Rainville at the right point, and Rainville fired a long shot past Dekanich. Lake Superior State capitalized on another power play opportunity 3:13 into the second period. A shot by Marty Gurnoe created a scrum in front of Dekanich. The puck came loose to Dominic Osman, and he clanged it off the left pipe. It rebounded behind Dekanich to Nathan Ward who was waiting on the right side, and he banged it home. Colgate edged LSSU in the faceoff circle, 36-29, with Burton winning 16 of his 26 draws. Colgate (1-1-1) Lake Superior St. (1-0-1) First Period: C-Fulton (Wilson), 4:26 (PP); L-Rainville (D.A.
