The third-seeded Terriers will face sixth-seeded New Hampshire in the teams first postseason meeting at a non-neutral rink since the 1986 Hockey East quarterfinals at Walter Brown Arena. BU swept its Hockey East series with the Wildcats for the first time since the season. That was also the last time that UNH was swept by any team in league play. The Terriers outscored the Wildcats, 11-2, in this year s series. BU finished tied for second in the Hockey East standings with 35 points, but lost the tiebreaker to UMass Lowell after losing two of its three games with the River Hawks. This weekend s match-up marks the ninth different quarterfinal opponent in as many years for the Terriers, as they have faced each of the league s other nine schools in the best-of-three series since The Terriers are in seven Hockey East tournament games against UNH. The teams last faced off in the 2006 semifinals - a 9-2 BU victory - and have just one previous quarterfinal meeting in 1986, when BU emerged victorious in a two-game, total-goals series. The Terriers league record of nine straight trips to the semifinals came to a halt last season after falling to Northeastern in three games during the quarterfinal round. Head coach Jack Parker has led BU to seven Hockey East tournament crowns. The Terriers last claimed the Lamoriello Trophy in SERIES HISTORY The Terriers and Wildcats have played 163 times since the season, and BU holds a decided advantage, (.662). UNH is (.458) in the 12 contests at Agganis Arena. In Hockey East play, the Terriers are (.624) versus the Wildcats. Thirty meetings have gone into overtime, and the Terriers hold a slight (.533) edge. GO FIGURE The road team in the BU/UNH regular-season series has enjoyed plenty of success in recent years, posting a (.596) mark since the start of the season. This is the first time that the two teams have met for a postseason game at a non-neutral site since SCOUTING THE WILDCATS UNH has posted a record since the start of February after going during December and January. The Wildcats are on the road for the Hockey East quarterfinal round for the first time since The Wildcats are paced offensively by senior Stevie Moses, whose 21 goals rank tied for second amongst Hockey East players. He has added 13 assists for 34 points, one more than sophomore Nick Sorkin ( ). Sophomore Kevin Goumas has added 31 points on eight goals and 23 assists. Freshman Casey DeSmith took over the starting goaltender job midway through the season and boasts a.929 save percentage and a 2.21 goals-against average. He led the league in save percentage during conference play at.928. Dick Umile is in his 22nd season as head coach at his alma mater and boasts an impressive career record of (.639). BU FINISHES OFF UNH SWEEP (12/8) Behind a pair of second-period goals and 28 saves from Kieran Millan, Boston University earned a 2-1 comeback win over New Hampshire on Dec. 8 at the Whittemore Center to complete a series sweep of the Wildcats. UNH took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, but the Terriers responded with a strong middle stanza and came away with the lead. Wade Megan tied the game when finished off a 2-on-1 power-play rush with Alex Chiasson at 4:54 of the second. The go-ahead goal was provided by Corey Trivino as he took a pass from Sahir Gill and converted from the inside edge of the right circle. The goal came just under three minutes after Megan got BU on the board. BU had just two power-play chances in the contest but used the latter to record the equalizer. The Terriers successfully killed off all five of UNH s opportunities with the man advantage. BACK IN NOVEMBER (11/19) Two goals in a span of 36 seconds in the third period broke a 1-1 tie and helped push Boston University past New Hampshire, 4-1, on Nov. 19 at Agganis Arena. Four different Terriers lit the lamp and Chris Connolly added a pair of assists in the victory. Kieran Millan made 33 saves, including 22 in the third. Wade Megan opened the scoring midway through the game with his sixth goal of the season. UNH tied the score, 1-1, with Trevor van Riemsdyk s first career goal at 5:05 of the third, but the Terriers wasted little time in regaining the lead. Just over two minutes later, Max Nicastro potted his first goal of the season to put BU on top once again. Moments after Nicastro s tally, Corey Trivino made it 3-1 thanks to a nifty pass from Connolly on a rush. Matt Nieto iced the game on a long empty-netter with 1:03 left. Matt Di Girolamo made 23 saves for the Wildcats, who held a 23-8 shot advantage in the third period. IN THE SEASON OPENER (10/8) Backed by a 35-save shutout from Kieran Millan, Boston University opened its campaign with a 5-0 victory over then-no. 12 New Hampshire on Oct. 8 at Agganis Arena. It marked the first season-opening shutout by the Terriers since a 6-0 win over RPI on Oct. 18, The Terriers broke a scoreless tie early in the second with goals by Wade Megan and Corey Trivino. Matt Nieto, Alex Chiasson and Kevin Gilroy all tacked on third-period markers. Chris Connolly, Charlie Coyle and Sahir Gill each recorded two assists on the night. With his performance, Millan recorded his 62nd career victory at BU to tie the program record held by Sean Fields 04. It was the sixth shutout of his career. THREE-GAME QUARTERFINAL FORMAT The format for this weekend s quarterfinal series will be the best two-of-three games, marking the 17th straight year this format is being utilized and the 19th time in the 28-year history of the league. The previous years were 1990, 1994 and every year since Other formats have been a two-game mini-game (1985), a two-game/total-goal series (1986 and 1988), two-game/total points (1993) and single elimination (1987, 1989, 1991, 1992 and 1995). Using the best-of-three series, the Terriers are (.681). CURRENT TERRIERS IN THE TOURNAMENT Sixteen Terriers have played at least one contest in the Hockey East tournament. Seniors Chris Connolly and Kieran Millan lead the group in games played with 12 each. Connolly has five points (1g, 4a) in his 12 games Junior Justin Courtnall (2g, 1a) and sophomore Adam Clendening (3a) each averaged a point per game in their first Hockey East tournament last season. Senior Ryan Ruikka and sophomore Matt Nieto each potted two goals in last year s series versus Northeastern. Millan was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2009 Hockey East Championship as a freshman after recording a 4-1 record, a 2.20 goals-against average and a.914 save percentage. He posted a 32-save shutout in the 1-0 victory over UMass Lowell in the 2009 title game. Millan is all-time in the league playoffs with a.915 save percentage and a 2.52 goalsagainst average. That total ranks eighth among all active Division I players. Connolly s 86 assists are the most by a Terrier since Chris Drury put up 101 during his career from Chris Higgins (84) and Pete MacArthur (83) had the most since Drury before Connolly passed them. Connolly led all Hockey East players in assists during league play this season with 26. After assisting on the go-ahead goal in a 2-1 win at UNH on Dec. 8, Connolly became the 78th player to score 100 points at BU. His younger brother, Jack, is a senior captain at Minnesota-Duluth and is atop the active career list with 192 points (64g, 128a). D PROVIDING O Since the turn of the new year, the Terriers defensemen have combined to tally 59 points (21g, 38a) in 17 games. Sophomore Garrett Noonan ranks second nationally in goals by a defenseman with 14. That total is tied for the fourth-most in a season by a BU blueliner and is just three off the school record of 17 set by Bob Brown during the campaign. Sophomore Adam Clendening has at least one point in 12 of his last 18 games and has totaled 19 points (2g, 17a) during the stretch, including three three-assist efforts. Clendening leads all Hockey East defensemen in points with 28 (3g, 25a) and his 0.85 pointsper-game average ranks sixth nationally amongst blueliners. Freshman Alexx Privitera scored 12 points (4g, 8a) in league play to league all rookie defensemen. BACK IN THE NATIONAL PICTURE BU was back on Nov. 11, but has won 18 of its last 26 contests, 13 of its last 20 and 11 of its last 17. The run includes two five-game win streaks, which were the longest for the Terriers since they won their final seven games during their 2009 NCAA championship run. The Terriers have come from behind in eight of their last 13 wins. BU is fourth in the RPI and tied for fourth in the PairWise. GO FIGURE After going 199 periods of play between the first and second goals of his career, junior Sean Escobedo waited less than 10 minutes to score again thanks to his two-goal second period last Friday at Vermont. He scored again in the regular-season finale and now has four points (3g, 1a) in his last four games. DOWN HOME BLUES With their win over Northeastern last Friday, the Terriers avoided their first five-game home losing streak since moving to campus in BU endured just one other four-game losing streak at home in a season since moving to campus in 1971, as it lost its last four contests at Walter Brown Arena during the campaign (2/23/80-3/8/80). On two other occasions, the Terriers dropped four straight at home spanning two seasons (3/21/86-11/1/86; 3/10/87-11/17/87). ROAD WARRIORS After suffering a 7-1 loss at UMass Lowell on Nov. 5 in the team s most lopsided defeat in over 12 years, the Terriers won 10 straight games on the road in Hockey East play. BU joins Maine s national championship team as the only Hockey East squads to win 10 straight conference road games. That famed squad went 12-0 on the road in league play. The Terriers are on the road this season, but just at home. GET SHORTY Boston University is fourth in the nation in shorthanded goals with nine.

5 BU allowed its only shorthanded goal of the season against Boston College in the Beanpot title game. PAIR OF TERRIERS IN RUNNING FOR WALTER BROWN Senior forward Chris Connolly and sophomore defenseman Adam Clendening are two of 21 semifinalists for this year s Walter Brown Award. The award is given annually by the Gridiron Club of Greater Boston to the top American-born college hockey player in New England. TERRIER TIDBITS Since the turn of the new year, junior Alex Chiasson has tallied a point in 13 of 18 contests with a total of 24 points (7g, 17a) and has committed just five penalties after earning a team-high 45 penalty minutes in the 2011 portion of the season. Sophomore Garrett Noonan is tied for third in Hockey East in plus-minus at plus-18. BU leads the nation in penalty minutes per game at 19.6 The Terriers went in November after combining for just three November wins over the previous two seasons. BU has four shutouts this season - three by Kieran Millan - after totaling just two the previous two seasons combined. The Terriers are against ranked opponents this season and against unranked teams. BU now boasts four wins this season over teams ranked fourth or higher at the time it has faced them (Boston College twice, Denver, Merrimack). This was the first season that the Terriers were atop the league standings during the month of January since the campaign. The 7-1 loss to Lowell on Nov. 5 was BU s most lopsided defeat since an 8-2 contest against Providence in the first game of the 1999 Hockey East quarterfinals. BU faced crosstown rival Northeastern five times in 10 days to end the season and lost the teams Hockey East quarterfinal series in three games. The Terriers finished 17th in the final USCHO.com national poll and received votes in the final USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine top-15 national poll. BU was the lone unbeaten team left in the country before falling at UNH on Nov. 19. The Terriers went undefeated in their first 10 games (6-0-4) for their best start in 33 seasons. BU reached the six-win mark on Oct. 30, 10 weeks earlier than it did in the season. The Terriers held the top spot in both national polls on Nov. 8. After earning six wins in October, the Terriers went just afterwards, posting just one victory in both November and December. BU went in its final 11 league contests. In the Terriers last 18 games, 12 were decided by a single goal and two others were ties. BU missed the NCAA tournament in back-to-back seasons for the first time since not qualifying for three straight years from NIETO EMERGES Sophomore Matt Nieto has scored at least one point in 22 games this season and ranks second on the team with 37 points on 13 goals and 24 assists. He had an eight-game goal-scoring streak snapped in November at Lowell. He totaled 12 points overall (8g, 4a) during the streak, which dated back to last season s Hockey East quarterfinals. The goal-scoring streak was the longest by a Terrier since Chris Drury scored in nine straight from Nov. 1-26, Nieto had 13 points (4g, 9a) in the last 11 games of the season after tallying two points (1g, 1a) in his first 11 contests. EXTRA SPECIAL BU is in its last 32 overtime games. The Terriers overtime loss to Merrimack on Nov. 11 was its first in league play since Feb. 21, 2003, at Providence. BU s last three overtime losses during non-conference play have come in the Beanpot against Boston College (2008, 2011, 2012). TOUGH TO BLANK BU has gone 105 straight games without being shutout. That is the longest such streak in the country currently. Yale owns the second-longest streak at 70 games. The Terriers have been shut out just twice in their last 209 contests. CRUNCH TIME BU is in the last 83 games in which it has led after two periods and in the last 39 games in which it was tied after two periods. DOWN TO THE WIRE Sixty-four of BU s last 111 games have been either been decided by a single goal or resulted in a tie and BU is in those contests. SPREADING IT OUT BU has had 23 players record a point this season and 20 of them have found the back of the net. The Terriers had 22 of their players score at least one point last season and led the league with 20 different goal scorers. BETWEEN THE PIPES Senior Kieran Millan and classmate Grant Rollheiser have combined to earn 156 starts in the BU goal over the past three-plus seasons. WEARING THE C Senior forward Chris Connolly serves as the team s captain this season after sharing captain duties with Joe Pereira last season. Connolly is the first two-year captain at BU since Jack O Callahan 79. Junior forwards Alex Chiasson and Justin Courtnall are this year s assistant captains. WELCOME ABOARD The Terriers welcomed three freshmen - two forwards (Cason Hohmann, Evan Rodrigues), one defenseman (Alexx Privitera) - to their roster this season in addition to sophomore Anthony Moccia, who joined the roster after serving as a practice goalie last year. During the holiday break, the team added forward/ defenseman Jake Moscatel to the roster. NHL HOPEFULS Nine of the Terriers on this year s roster have been chosen by a professional team in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. The nine players have their rights owned by nine different clubs: Alex Chiasson (Dallas, 2009) Adam Clendening (Chicago, 2011) Yasin Cissé (Winnipeg, 2010) Justin Courtnall (Tampa Bay, 2007) Wade Megan (Florida, 2009) Kieran Millan (Colorado, 2009) Matt Nieto (San Jose, 2011) Garrett Noonan (Nashville, 2011) Grant Rollheiser (Toronto, 2008) PRO PIPELINE Thirteen former Terriers have played at least one game in the NHL this season: Adrian Aucoin (Phoenix) Nick Bonino (Anaheim) Rick DiPietro (New York Islanders) Matt Gilroy (Tampa Bay) John McCarthy (San Jose) Jay Pandolfo (New York Islanders) Tom Poti (Washington) Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis) Brian Strait (Pittsburgh) David Van der Gulik (Colorado) Ryan Whitney (Edmonton) Colin Wilson (Nashville) Brandon Yip (Colorado/Nashville) Seven others started the year in the AHL and several of them were among late cuts in their respective team s preseason camp: Chris Bourque (Washington) Colby Cohen (Boston) Zach Cohen (Colorado) Eric Gryba (Ottawa) Dan Spang (Dallas) Sean Sullivan (San Jose/Florida) David Warsofsky (Boston) In all, eight players from the national championship team have reached the NHL (Bonino, C. Cohen, Gilroy, McCarthy, Shattenkirk, Strait, Wilson, Yip). The BU team holds the program record for having the most players eventually reach the NHL at TH SEASON The Terriers are in their 90th season of intercollegiate play and currently hold a (.627) record. BU s 1,424 wins are only surpassed by Minnesota (1,649 wins - 90 seasons) and Michigan (1,552 wins - 89 seasons). The three programs represent a trio of the top NCAA Division I college hockey conferences in the WCHA (Minnesota), CCHA (Michigan) and Hockey East (BU), and hold a combined 19 national titles between them. COACH PARKER NOTES 39th SEASON ON THE TERRIER BENCH BU head coach Jack Parker is now in his 39th season and holds an overall record of (.647). Ryan Ruikka, Sahir Gill and Evan Rodrigues contributed two assists apiece. The Terriers outshot the Catamounts by a margin as Rob Madore made 29 saves for the home squad. BU SPLITS WITH LOWELL (2/17-18) Boston University split a home-and-home series with then-no. 6 UMass Lowell last weekend with the road team winning each contest. The Terriers fourth line of Ross Gaudet, Ryan Santana and Yasin Cisse combined for seven points (3g, 4a) over the two games. The Terriers trailed for only 41 seconds of the game, as Wade Megan had a quick answer off a rebound at the right post at 6:34. BU scored a power-play goal in each period and took a lead it would not relinquish at 13:18 of the first when Chiasson one-timed a feed by Connolly to the back of the net. UMass Lowell rebounded with a 4-2 win on Saturday night at Agganis Arena. Gaudet evened the score at 1-1 at the 5:03 mark of the second period, but the River Hawks scored three consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead. The visitors went 1-of-5 with the man advantage. BU FALLS TO BC IN BEANPOT TITLE GAME (2/13) Despite Garrett Noonan scoring two goals and Kieran Millan matching a career high with 44 saves, Boston University dropped a 3-2 overtime decision in the title game of the 60th Beanpot to Boston College on Feb. 13 at TD Garden. The Terriers erased a 2-1 deficit at the 7:12 mark of the third to send the game to overtime. The Eagles Bill Arnold scored with 6.4 seconds remaining in the extra session to lift BC to the victory. Millan received the Eberly Award, given to the goaltender with the top save percentage in the tournament. The senior stopped 73 of the 77 shots he faced, good for a.948 save percentage. Alex Chiasson assisted on both BU goals while Adam Clendening and Matt Nieto picked up one assist apiece. The Eagles got a 32-save performance in goal from Parker Milner and held a advantage in shots. BC opened the scoring 8:54 in when Pat Mullane roofed a shot past Millan with the Eagles skating shorthanded. It was the first time all season that BU allowed a goal while on the power play. Both of Noonan s goals came on the power play, first at 15:11 of the second to tie the game at 1-1. The sophomore scored from the bottom of the right circle following a cross-ice pass from Nieto. Just over three minutes later, BC regained the lead right as it looked like BU might kill off its second 5-on-3 disadvantage of the middle stanza. The Terriers would get a 5-on-3 advantage of their own, however, and use it to knot the game once again. Chiasson spotted Noonan at the right post, where he sent the puck off Milner and in for his 11th goal of the season with 12:48 left in regulation. The Minutemen never trailed in the contest and used a pair of power-play goals and a late emptynetter to secure their first road win of the season and their first-ever road win against a top-ranked team. Joel Hanley gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at 12:47 of the middle stanza. After a late empty-netter made it 3-1 in UMass favor, BU brought the extra attacker back on to create a 6-4 advantage and got a goal from Chiasson with 4.5 ticks left, but it was too little, too late. UMass opened the scoring at 7:14 of the first and Chris Connolly tied the game just over two minutes later when he poked in the puck while it was sitting in the crease.
