The Terriers played in the inaugural Frozen Fenway in 2010, defeating archrival Boston College by a score of 3-2. BU will be looking to avenge a 7-0 drubbing by the Black Bears up in Orono on Nov. 15. The teams have exactly opposite records in both overall and league play as BU is (2-4-1 HE) and Maine is (4-2-1 HE). THE GREAT OUTDOORS Boston University has played in 36 prior outdoor games and holds a (.625) record in those contests. This will be the second time BU and Maine have faced off outdoors, as their first-ever meeting took place on Feb. 2, 1924, under the skies in Orono. The Black Bears won that contest by a score of 4-2. The Terriers first-ever outdoor game took place on Feb. 4, 1920, against Boston College at the Eagles University Rink. Outside of Frozen Fenway, BU s most recent outdoor contest was an 8-4 victory over Holy Cross at MIT Rink on Jan. 7, SERIES HISTORY The Terriers and Black Bears have played 120 times since first meeting in the season, and BU holds a edge (.538), including an advantage in the 30 meetings since the beginning of the season. Twenty-three of the all-time meetings have gone into overtime and BU holds an advantage in those games. BU has recorded seven of the 12 shutouts in the series. SCOUTING THE BLACK BEARS Maine had a five-game unbeaten streak (4-0-1) snapped in a 2-1 loss at Quinnipiac in its most recent game on Jan. 3. Sophomore Devin Shore leads the team in scoring with 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists. He brings a 10- game point streak into Fenway and has tallied 18 points (8g, 10a) during the stretch. Junior Connor Leen (3g, 14a) and sophomore defenseman Ben Hutton (7g, 7a) have added 17 and 14 points, respectively. Sophomore Sean Maguire made 17 saves on 20 shots before being replaced by classmate Matt O Connor, who stopped 10 of the 14 shots he faced. Each team registered 34 shots on the evening. It was the first time since Feb. 16, 2008, that BU and Maine met with neither team ranked in the USCHO.com Poll. It was also the first time BU headed to Orono without Jack Parker as its head coach since the teams first met on Feb. 2, in the conference at 23.1 percent, which ranks seventh nationally. The Terriers scored on five straight power plays off minor penalties before having the streak come to an end in the second period against Dartmouth. BU s combined special teams mark of 55.8 percent ranks fourth-best in Division I, as its penalty kill is operating at 85.1 percent, good for 12th in the nation. 3 goals by a defenseman with 29 In the victory over Wisconsin, three Terrier defensemen had multi-point evenings: Noonan (1g, 2a), Oksanen (1g, 1a), Matt Grzelcyk (1g, 1a). That was the first time that had happened since an 8-0 victory at Providence on Jan. 21, The three players then were Alexx Privitera (2a), Max Nicastro (1g, 2a) and Noonan (1g, 1a). PERIODICALLY SPEAKING BU is outscoring its opponents in the second period by a margin but has scored just 23 goals this season in the first and third periods combined. BU is being outscored in the third period. DISCIPLINED After averaging at least 15 penalty minutes per game in each of the past five seasons, the Terriers are averaging only 10 penalty minutes per contest thus far this season. If that average holds up, it will be the Terriers lowest since the campaign. BU finished in the top eight nationally in penalty minutes each of the past three seasons. BALANCED ATTACK The Terriers boast one of the most balanced scoring attack in the country, as their top eight scorers are in double digits and are separated by only four points. BU s first eight goals of the season were scored by eight different players. Through 19 games, 14 Terriers have at least one goal. FRESHMAN SPARK Freshman forward Robbie Baillargeon is tied for second on the team in points (14) and has a squad-best plus-minus of +5. All 14 of his points have come in the last 16 games and 11 of them came at even strength. He s been named a Hockey East Top Performer five times this season and is ranked 20th in the nation in points per game amongst rookies (0.74). BANNER OPPONENTS This season, BU has faced exactly half of the other 18 schools who have won an NCAA D-I title. Harvard was the ninth and final member of this group. The Terriers played four straight games against former NCAA champions in October, as BU hosted RPI and Wisconsin on Oct before visiting Michigan and Michigan State. BU has also faced North Dakota and Cornell in addition to Hockey East foes Boston College and Maine. ANYTHING TO WIN The Terriers average blocked shots per game, good for 14th in the country. Senior Garrett Noonan has a team-best 41 blocked shots. TERRIER TIDBITS BU had 11 regular-season home games during the first half of the season, tying the and squads for the most in program history. In each of the previous four seasons, BU has lost just one game after holding a lead through two periods, but has had three of those losses this season alone. BU has dressed at least eight freshmen in 13 games this season. All 21 skaters on the roster played in at least one game on opening weekend boston university men s ice hockey Only four players on BU s roster have more than eight career goals at the Division I level. The Terriers kicked off the year with a fourgame homestand, its longest to open a season in program history. The seven-goal output against Wisconsin was the most by a BU team since a 7-4 win at UMass Lowell on Feb. 17, The Terriers opened the season with their first two-win home weekend against different opponents since they defeated North Dakota and Michigan State to claim the 2008 IceBreaker title at Agganis. BU had been undefeated in 44 straight contests (39-0-5) in which it allowed exactly two goals until its 2-1 setback at Michigan. The Terriers have had 23 different players record a shorthanded goal over the past five seasons but are one of only 11 teams with zero shorthanded goals this season. BU is in its last 41 overtime games. YOUTH STEPPING UP Eight of BU s nine freshmen have recorded their first collegiate points. Robbie Baillargeon made quite an impression in the victory over Wisconsin with his first three points (1g, 2a) in a BU uniform. Nick Roberto scored the second goal for BU in a victory over Holy Cross. Kevin Duane assisted on the goal and then added one of his own the following weekend against RPI. Tommy Kelley scored the game-winning goal against Massachusetts. Doyle Somerby assisted on BU s lone goal at Michigan State. Dalton MacAfee earned his first collegiate point on Nov. 23 against North Dakota. Brendan Collier got into the scoring column with an assist on Dec. 7 versus Merrimack. On Jan. 8, Dillon Lawrence got his first point with a power-play goal against Harvard. SCORING BY CLASS The sophomores the lead the race for scoring by class with 53 points, including 19 goals. Goals Assists Points Sophomores Freshmen Juniors Seniors Totals CANADIAN CREASE Dating back to the start of the season, the Terriers have had a Canadian start in goal in each of their past 219 contests. The last American to start in goal for BU was Brett Bennett in the 2008 Hockey East semfinals against Vermont. HOCKEY EAST HONORS Sophomore center Danny O Regan was named the Warrior Hockey Co-Player of the Week by Hockey East on Nov. 4. O Regan played an integral role in the Terriers comeback from a 3-0 deficit against Providence on Nov. 1 by scoring the game-tying and game-winning goals. After leading BU to a win and tie against then- No. 14/15 North Dakota, sophomore goaltender Matt O Connor was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 25. O Connor stopped 92 of the 96 shots he faced over the series, including a career-high 55-save performance in a 3-3 draw. It actually happened twice during the season, most recently when BU took on both Minnesota and Lake Superior State in the 1994 Frozen Four. BU was 0-2 against LSSU heading the 1994 title game thanks to a forfeited win in The rarity also happened in November that season, when BU faced Maine and Cornell backto-back. The Terriers now lead their all-time series with the Black Bears and are an even against the Gophers. VIEW FROM THE TOP BU s season-opening 3-1 victory over Massachusetts was the only Hockey East contest scheduled for October. The Terriers thus remained atop the league standings until Nov. 1, when nine Hockey East teams played their first conference game. BU will enter the semester break in 10th place in the standings. USHERING IN A NEW ERA The win over UMass in the season opener kickstarted a new era for the Boston University men s ice hockey program, as it was David Quinn s first regular-season game as head coach of the Terriers. It marked the first time someone other than Parker was the head coach of BU s opening game since Leon Abbott in After 40 years at the helm, legendary coach Jack Parker stepped down last March. Quinn was named head coach on March 26 after spending last season as an assistant coach for the NHL s Colorado Avalanche. As an associate coach at BU from , Quinn helped the Terriers capture an NCAA championship in 2009, four Beanpot titles and two Hockey East tournament championships. YOUTH MOVEMENT The Terriers welcome 10 newcomers to the roster this season. The nine freshmen and one redshirt sophomore account for 40 percent of the squad. The Terriers only have two juniors on the roster, forwards Cason Hohmann and Evan Rodrigues. 18 of the 25 players on the team are underclassmen. The Terriers have five seniors, including co-captains Garrett Noonan and Patrick MacGregor. BLUE-LINE LEADERSHIP On Oct. 4, Coach Quinn announced that senior defensemen Garrett Noonan and Patrick Mac- Gregor would serve as co-captains for the season. Ironically, this is the first time that the Terriers have had co-captains that were both defensemen since , when Quinn and Tom Ryan - father of BU freshman T.J. Ryan - shared the captaincy. POLL POSITION BU was No. 19 in the USCHO.com Division I Preseason Poll. The Terriers have never been ranked lower to start a season in the 17-year history of the poll. The start pushed the Terriers up to No. 13 in USCHO.com Poll but they dropped out of the rankings following the Nov. 8 loss to BC. COMING FROM THE COMMONWEALTH On this year s BU roster, 14 of the 25 players are from Massachusetts. Just two seasons ago, the Terriers had just five players from Massachusetts. Six of the nine freshmen on the BU roster are Massachusetts natives. Five of the team s seven defensemen are from Massachusetts. LOOKING BACK AT Boston University posted a record of last season and went (31 pts.) in Hockey East play to finish in a three-way tie for third in the league standings. Third-seeded BU advanced to the Hockey East semifinals for the 11th time in 12 seasons after sweeping Merrimack at Agganis. The Terriers topped archrival Boston College, 6-3, in the league semifinals before being edged, 1-0, by UMass Lowell in the title game. BU s 21 wins were the most of any team that did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. UMass Lowell was the only Hockey East team that BU went winless against last season. After a combined five wins in January and February, the Terriers reeled off six wins in March, including five straight to reach the Hockey East championship game. Then-sophomore Evan Rodrigues was named a Hockey East Second Team All-Star and Matt Grzelcyk - a Hockey East Honorable Mention All-Star - and Danny O Regan were named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. O Regan tallied a team-best 38 points (16g, 22a) to become the first BU freshman since Tony Amonte in to lead the team in scoring. WELCOME ABOARD For the second consecutive year, the Terriers welcome a nine-member freshman class. BU adds six rookie forwards (Robbie Baillargeon, Brendan Collier, Kevin Duane, Tommy Kelley, Dillon Lawrence, Nick Roberto) and three rookie defensemen (Dalton MacAfee, T.J. Ryan, Doyle Somerby) to their roster this season. NHL HOPEFULS Eight of the Terriers on this year s roster have been chosen by a professional team in the National Hockey League Entry Draft. The eight players have their rights owned by eight different clubs and seven of them were picked in the 2012 draft: Robbie Baillargeon (Ottawa, 2012) Brendan Collier (Carolina, 2012) Matt Grzelcyk (Boston, 2012) Sam Kurker (St. Louis, 2012) Sean Maguire (Pittsburgh, 2012) Danny O Regan (San Jose, 2012) Garrett Noonan (Nashville, 2011) Doyle Somerby (N.Y. Islanders, 2012) PRO PIPELINE Fourteen former Terriers have played in the NHL this season: Nick Bonino (Anaheim) Alex Chiasson (Dallas) Charlie Coyle (Minnesota) Matt Gilroy (Florida) Eric Gryba (Ottawa) John McCarthy (San Jose) Matt Nieto (San Jose) Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis) Brian Strait (N.Y. Islanders) David Van der Gulik (Colorado) David Warsofsky (Boston) Ryan Whitney (Florida) Colin Wilson (Nashville) Brandon Yip (Phoenix)

5 Eight others have played in the AHL this year: Adam Clendening (Rockford) Colby Cohen (San Antonio) Justin Courtnall (Hamilton) John Curry (Iowa) Sean Escobedo (Bridgeport) Wade Megan (San Antonio) Kieran Millan (Lake Erie) Max Nicastro (Grand Rapids) In all, 10 players from the national championship team have reached the NHL (Bonino, Colby Cohen, Gilroy, Gryba, McCarthy, Shattenkirk, Strait, Warsofsky, Wilson, Yip), including all six defensemen. In December, David Warsofsky became the first Terrier since Carl Corazzini in 2004 to make his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins. The BU team holds the program record for having the most players eventually reach the NHL at 11. HOCKEY AS A CAREER The Terriers have 15 alumni working in NHL front offices, more than any other school in the country. SELECT TERRIERS Former BU head coach Jack Parker led the U.S. Men s Select Team to Deutschland Cup title with a 7-4 win over host Germany on Nov. 10 in Munich. Three former Terriers played for Parker once again, as Peter MacArthur, Chris Connolly and Chris Bourque combined for seven points (1g, 6a) in the tournament. Parker s coaching staff also included two of his former BU assistants - Ben Smith and Mike Bavis. All 21 players on the roster are currently playing in European elite leagues in Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. 92ND SEASON The Terriers are in their 92nd season of intercollegiate play and currently hold a (.624) all-time record. BU s 1,454 wins are only surpassed by Minnesota (1,694 wins - 93 seasons) and Michigan (1,601 wins - 92 seasons). For decades, the three programs represented the top three NCAA Division I college hockey conferences in the WCHA (Minnesota), CCHA (Michigan) and Hockey East (BU) until the Big Ten was formed prior to this season. The three schools hold a combined 19 national titles between them. GAME RECAPS BU FALLS AT HARVARD Boston University opened up the second half on Jan. 4 and had a third-period comeback fall short in a 7-4 road loss to Harvard. BU scored on its first three power-play chances, including two in the final period to cut a three-goal deficit to one, but Harvard s Sean Malone notched a shorthanded goal while killing off a late major penalty and added an empty netter. The Terriers opened the scoring in the first minute of play with a goal from junior Cason Hohmann, who returned to the lineup after missing five games with a shoulder injury. Harvard, however, reeled off the game s next three goals to take a lead they would not relinquish. Freshman Phil Zielonka scored the first two goals of his collegiate career for the Crimson. Freshman Dillon Lawrence cut the Harvard lead to 3-2 when he recorded his first goal as a Terrier at 6:14 of the second on a man advantage. In the third, sophomore Danny O Regan tallied his team-best sixth goal of the season on a power play before classmate Ahti Oksanen added another man-up tally to make it a 5-4 contest. BU FALLS TO BENTLEY IN FIRST-HALF FINALE Boston University wrapped up the first half with a 4-1 loss to Bentley on Dec. 14 at Agganis Arena. Bentley scored the lone goal of the first period before adding boston university men s ice hockey two more tallies early in the middle stanza to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Matt Lane redirected an offering from classmate Ahti Oksanen into the Bentley goal with 5:04 left in regulation, but that s as close as BU would get. The Falcons got a 42-save performance from senior Branden Komm while junior Brett Switzer added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Matt O Connor recorded 30 saves in goal for BU, which went 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off both of the Falcons chances with the man advantage. BU held a shot advantage. BU TIES UP MERRIMACK, 1-1 Boston University scored in the second minute of play, but settled for a 1-1 draw with Merrimack on Dec. 7 at Agganis Arena. Sophomore Matt O Connor took home first-star honors for a 38-save performance. Junior Evan Rodrigues scored from the left circle just 1:47 into the game. It was his first goal since the season opener on Oct. 11. Freshmen Robbie Baillargeon and Brendan Collier assisted on the play, as Collier picked up his first collegiate point. The Warriors tied up the game on a tally by freshman Chris LeBlanc just under six minutes into the second. BU played a strong third and dominated play in overtime, but was not able to muster a late winner. Junior Rasmus Tirronen recorded 23 saves for Merrimack, which held a shot advantage for the game. BU FALLS AT MERRIMACK, 3-2 Boston University dropped a 3-2 road contest to Merrimack on Dec. 6 at Lawler Arena. Despite allowing the first goal of the game, the Terriers were able to gain the lead thanks to goals from sophomore Matt Grzelcyk and freshman Tommy Kelley. The Warriors, however, scored twice in the third, including Mike Collins game-winner, to come away with the victory. Matt O Connor made 27 saves in goal for BU, which went 0-for-4 on the power play. Merrimack, which scored on one of four chances with the man advantage, outshot BU, 30-17, and got a 17-save performance from Rasmus Tirronen. TERRIERS TAKE MANHATTAN ONCE AGAIN Sophomore Matt O Connor made 37 saves and three different Terriers scored as Boston University defeated No. 14 Cornell, 3-2, in the fourth edition of Red Hot Hockey at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 30. BU staked itself a 3-0 lead but Cornell answered with two goals in the third to cut the Terriers lead to one. BU was forced to kill a penalty for the final 1:47 of the game, but held on for the win. The Terriers improved their record in the event to Following the game, the Terriers were presented with the newlycreated Kelley-Harkness Cup, named after legendary coaches Jack Kelley (BU) and Ned Harkness (Cornell). O Connor was the Terriers best player on a night that the Big Red outshot BU, O Connor made 16 saves in the final frame and 13 of his 37 stops came while he and the Terrier penalty killers held the second-ranked Big Red power-play unit to zero goals in seven chances. Two freshmen and a sophomore found the back of the net for BU, with Mike Moran opening the scoring in the first period before classmates Robbie Baillargeon and Nick Roberto scored in the second and third, respectively. BU, NORTH DAKOTA SKATE TO 3-3 TIE Sophomore goaltender Matt O Connor s career-high 55 saves helped Boston University earn a 3-3 tie with No. 14/15 North Dakota on Nov. 23 at Agganis Arena. BU led twice but needed a third-period goal from freshman Robbie Baillargeon to erase North Dakota s lone lead of the contest. Twenty-four of O Connor s 55 stops came in the third period. The Terriers also received goals from senior Garrett Noonan and freshman Nick Roberto. Sophomore Matt Lane had two assists and freshman Dalton MacAfee s assist on Baillargeon s marker was his first collegiate point. North Dakota held a commanding shot advantage and each team went one-for-seven on the power play. UND recorded 19 power-play shots on the night. The tie closed the books on a successful weekend series for the Terriers, as they posted a 3-1 victory over UND on Friday. TERRIERS TOP NORTH DAKOTA IN SERIES OPENER Thanks to a strong opening period and a 37-save performance by sophomore Matt O Connor, Boston University posted a 3-1 victory over North Dakota on Nov. 22 in the opener of a weekend series. Junior Cason Hohmann opened the scoring midway through the first before leaving the game with an injury. UCONN Thanks to a trio of goals in the second period, Boston University posted a 4-1 victory over visiting Connecticut on Nov. 17 at Agganis to end a three-game losing streak. Sophomore Danny O Regan opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the second stanza before freshman Nick Roberto doubled the lead just over five minutes later. Freshman Kevin Duane completed the three-goal spurt with a tip-in on a power play at 14:44 of the period. UConn spoiled sophomore Matt O Connor s shutout bid when senior Brant Harris scored on a wrister from the left circle with 16:08 left in the third. Freshman Robbie Baillargeon created the 4-1 final with an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation. O Connor finished with 28 saves to pick up his fourth win of the season. BU held a shot advantage for the game. The Huskies committed just one penalty, but BU s power play converted on its lone chance. BU killed off all three UConn power-play chances, including a late 5-on-3. TERRIERS FALL TO BC Boston University fell to archrival Boston College, 5-1, at Agganis Arena on Nov. 8. The Eagles got a three-point night from junior Johnny Gaudreau, who earned first-star honors after scoring the gamewinning goal and adding two assists. After BC took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, freshman Nick Roberto scored the Terriers lone goal of the night off a power play early in the second period to make it one-goal game. The Eagles, however, responded less than five minutes later with a goal by Bill Arnold to regain a two-goal edge. BC added goals within a minute apart in the third to seal the 5-1 win. Sophomore goaltender Matt O Connor turned away 35 BC shots on the evening while the Eagles got a 22-save performance from Thatcher Demko. TERRIERS FALL IN PROVIDENCE Boston University struck first but came up short in its attempt to earn a weekend sweep, as No. 3 Providence came away with a 3-1 victory on Nov. 2 at Schneider Arena. Ahti Oksanen continued his strong start to the season with a power-play marker to give the visitors a 1-0 lead late in the second. The Friars notched a power-play goal of their own before the middle period came to an end and then got the go-ahead goal early in the third. PC tacked on an empty-netter in the final minute. Sean Maguire recorded 34 saves for BU, which went 1-for-3 on the power play. Providence got a 28-save performance from Jon Gillies to help them earn a weekend split. Junior Ross Mauermann scored the Friars final two goals. WILD NIGHT AT AGGANIS Despite facing a 3-0 deficit after one period, Boston University rallied all the way back to pull off a thrilling 4-3 victory against No. 3 Providence on Nov. 1. Danny O Regan scored the game-tying and game-winning goals with the latter coming 5:38 into the third period. Fellow sophomores Sam Kurker and Matt Lane each added a goal for the Terriers. BU handed the Friars their first loss of the season, as the visitors moved to The Terriers answered PC s three-goal first with three goals of their own in the second. The game winner came at 5:38 of the third when O Regan poked in a loose puck at the left post after Robbie Baillargeon s try at the top of the crease was stopped. Matt O Connor turned in a 34-save performance for the Terriers, as he stopped the final 22 shots he faced to allow the home team to erase the deficit. LATE RALLY LIFTS SPARTANS PAST TERRIERS For the second time in as many nights, Boston University squandered a 1-0 lead entering the third period, as the Terriers fell to Michigan State, 3-1, on Oct. 26 at Munn Ice Arena. Matt Lane put BU on the board in the final minute of the opening stanza and the visitors held on to that slim lead until the 15:04 mark of the third, when the Spartans finally got on the board thanks to a tally by Brett Darnell. Just 52 seconds later, Joe Cox elevated a rebound over BU netminder Sean Maguire at the right post to give the Spartans the lead. After a late flurry with an extra attacker did not produce an equalizer for BU, Michigan State tacked on an empty netter by Greg Wolfe in the closing seconds to seal the win. MSU held a shot advantage and got a 26-save effort in goal from Jake Hildebrand. The Terriers gave the home team seven power-play chances on the night, but the penalty kill was up to the task each time. BU went 0-for-3 with the man advantage. TERRIERS EDGED AT YOST Despite taking a 1-0 lead into the third period and getting a standout 42-save performance by Matt O Connor, BU fell at No. 4/4 Michigan by a score of 2-1 on Oct. 25 at Yost Ice Arena. A goal late in the first period by Robbie Baillargeon was the only scoring for the first 47 minutes of regulation. Michigan tied it up on a power-play marker at 7:16 of the third and then got the game winner on a penalty shot 90 seconds later. BU had only one power-play chance all evening and killed off four of the Wolverines five man-up opportunities. O Connor stopped the first 34 Michigan shots he faced. With 1:35 left in the opening stanza, Baillargeon one-timed a shot past Michigan netminder Zach Nagelvoort from the middle of the right circle. Michigan held a shot advantage as Nagelvoort turned aside 18 BU shots. TERRIERS ROLL PAST BADGERS Seven Terriers found the back of the net to lead Boston University to a 7-3 triumph over No. 2 Wisconsin on Oct. 19 at Agganis Arena. BU outscored the visitors by a 6-2 margin over the final two periods and went 3-of-7 on the power play. Cason Hohmann recorded a career-high four points (1g, 3a) to be one of seven BU players with multiple points. Matt O Connor had a 40-save performance, posting at least 14 saves each period. BU never trailed in the game, opening the scoring on a power-play goal by Ahti Oksanen midway through the first period. Wisconsin got a power-play tally of its own late in the period from Jake McCabe to draw even, but the Terriers scored three times in the middle stanza to take the lead for good. The Badgers also got goals from Keegan Meuer and Michael Mersch while holding a shot advantage. Robbie Baillargeon had the best game of his young career, potting his first collegiate goal in addition to a pair of assists. Garrett Noonan had the same scoring line (1g, 2a) while Oksanen and fellow sophomores Matt Grzelcyk and Matt Lane each notched a goal and an assist. Another sophomore, Mike Moran, rounded out the septet of goal scorers with his second career tally. TERRIERS EDGED BY RENSSELAER Boston University suffered its first loss of the season on Oct. 18 as No. 17 Rensselaer used two early goals to come away with a 3-1 win at Agganis Arena. Kevin Duane scored his first collegiate goal for the Terriers. The Engineers got a pair of goals from Ryan Haggerty. RPI opened the scoring just 3:25 into the game before adding a power-play goal less than two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead. Duane scored in the final minute of the second period to get BU on the board and cut the deficit to 2-1. Haggerty reestablished a two-goal cushion for the visitors with a tally just 48 seconds into the third and the RPI defense kept the Terriers off the board the rest of the way. BU HOLDS OFF HOLY CROSS, 3-2 Boston University capped off a two-win home weekend by defeating Holy Cross, 3-2, at Agganis Arena on Oct. 12. The Terriers never trailed in the game and got goals from centers Danny O Regan, Nick Roberto and Cason Hohmann. Garrett Noonan earned two assists and Matt O Connor made 21 saves for BU in his first start since Feb. 26. BU got on the scoreboard first at 10:43 of the opening period when O Regan got ahead of the Holy Cross defense, drew a penalty and then roofed a shot over netminder Matt Ginn. Roberto scored his first collegiate goal shortly after Holy Cross made it a 1-1 game to help BU regain the lead for good. Hohmann gave BU a 3-1 advantage on a power play with 4:52 left in the second. Holy Cross made it a one-goal game again when Adam Schmidt weaved through the BU defense and slid the puck around O Connor s left skate at 3:59 of the third period. That would be as close as the visitors would get, however, as O Connor and the Terrier defense withstood a late push to remain undefeated after opening weekend. IN THE OPENER Thanks to a three-goal spurt early in the second, BU opened its season under first-year head coach David Quinn with a 3-1 home victory over Massachusetts on Oct. 11. Following a scoreless first period, three Terriers got on the scoreboard within the first eight minutes of the second to break open the game. Ahti Oksanen assisted on all three tallies. In goal, Sean Maguire turned in an impressive 39-save performance for the Terriers. The Minutemen spoiled Maguire s shutout bid midway through the third before BU closed out the 3-1 win. Garrett Noonan opened the scoring just 1:02 into the second period when he skated down the slot before beating UMass netminder Steve Mastalerz. Evan Rodrigues and Oksanen each kicked off multi-point nights with assists on the play. Tommy Kelley doubled the lead less than four minutes later with the game-winner - his first collegiate goal - on a power play with helpers from Cason Hohmann and Oksanen. After taking a pass from Oksanen, Rodrigues made it a 3-0 contest at the 7:32 mark with a shot from the right circle that beat Mastalerz high blocker. Massachusetts lone goal came from Steven Iacobellis at the left circle on a power play at 10:24 of the final period. Mastalerz made 21 saves in net for UMass, which held a show advantage.

7 boston university men s ice hockey DAVID QUINN HEAD COACH BOSTON UNIVERSITY 89 FIRST SEASON Former Boston University associate head coach and Colorado Avalanche assistant David Quinn was named the 11th head coach in the storied history of the Boston University men s ice hockey program on March 26, Quinn, who played at BU from , replaced his former head coach and mentor, Jack Parker, who announced his retirement after 40 seasons at the helm of the Terrier program. An All-Hockey East and All-New England defenseman at BU and a cocaptain during his senior year of , Quinn came back to campus in 2004 to become the team s associate head coach, a role he served in for five seasons. Quinn s recruiting efforts were instrumental in helping build BU s 2009 national championship team. During his time as associate head coach, he worked primarily with the team s defensemen, turning the unit into arguably the best in the nation. All six of the defensemen from the 2009 title squad have reached the National Hockey League. After helping the Terriers reach the pinnacle of college hockey, Quinn left to join the Avalanche organization as the head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters. He compiled a record in three seasons with Lake Erie and guided the Monsters to their first-ever playoff berth in He was named an assistant coach on former BU teammate Joe Sacco s staff at Colorado prior to this season. Quinn s coaching career, which began as an assistant at Northeastern University at 1994, has also been highlighted by several successful stints with USA Hockey. Prior to serving as the Terriers associate head coach, he spent two years as head coach of the Under-17 Team. Playing against older opponents, the U17 team qualified for the North American Hockey League playoffs for only the third time in program history, finishing with a record above.500 for the first time ever. The squad owned a 10-3 record in international play, including a first-place finish at the Four Nations Cup in Magnitogorsk, Russia, and at the Under18 Four Nations Vlado Druzilla in Piestany, Slovakia, where the team played up an age group. For his accomplishments, USA Hockey named Quinn as the 2003 USA Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year. Quinn s coaching career began prematurely, as it was thought he would enjoy an excellent playing career both on the international and professional levels. A member of the U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship, Quinn made himself a strong candidate for the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Teams. In addition, he was the 13th player selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft when the Minnesota North Stars made him their first-round selection. However, his hopes for an Olympic Team berth and a career in the NHL came to an end prior to his senior year at BU when he was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Christmas Disease that ultimately ended his hockey- playing career. After trying to play two seasons of professional hockey, he took the assistant position at Northeastern, where he was responsible for recruiting, off-ice conditioning, scouting and video coordination. In July 1996, Quinn was named the top assistant coach and head recruiter for the University of Nebraska Omaha. There he helped establish the school s first Division I men s ice hockey program, which began playing during the season. Quinn then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. The program, designed to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and to develop their future hockey careers, focuses its efforts on high-caliber participation on the ice and creating well-rounded individuals off the ice. Quinn served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at four IIHF World Championships -- two with the men s team (2007, 2012) and two with the women s squad (1999, 2000). He helped the women earn the silver medal at both tournaments and also served as an on-ice assistant at the 2001 U.S. Women s Olympic Trials and as a boys coach at the 1995 and 1996 USA Hockey Select Festivals. His involvement with the USA Hockey coaching ranks began in 1995, when he served as a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women s Select Camp. A native of Cranston, R.I., Quinn earned a bachelor s degree in sociology from BU in 1989.
