6 Coming off a year that resulted in the fifth-best turnaround in the history of Division I college hockey along with Hockey East and Beanpot titles, Boston University wants to go one step further in Third-year head coach David Quinn and the Terriers now know what it takes to get to the national championship game, and the team is hungry to hoist the season s final trophy on that Saturday night in April. Fifteen of the Terriers top 18 scorers are back to help defend their titles and another impact freshman class joins the mix to help the squad reload. There s no doubt that replacing the three others will be easier said than done. After one of the greatest freshman seasons in college hockey history, Jack Eichel now has his sights set on a strong rookie season for the Buffalo Sabres. Eichel combined with graduated senior Evan Rodrigues to form the nation s top 1-2 scoring punch in the nation and another senior from last year, Cason Hohmann, saved his best for last. The other major void to fill will be in goal, where starter Matt O Connor turned in a terrifc junior campaign before signing an NHL free-agent deal with the Ottawa Senators. Senior Matt Grzelcyk returns for his second year as BU s captain and will be supported by classmates Matt Lane and Danny O Regan, who earned A s on their jerseys for their final year on Commonweatlth Ave. FORWARDS 11 returning, 6 lost, 4 new Only one active skater - Northeastern s Kevin Roy - enters this season with more career points than O Regan. As the right wing on last year s top line in college hockey, O Regan put up 50 points on 23 goals and 27 assists and enters his last go-around with 110 career points. Grzelcyk was an first-team All-American as a junior after putting up 38 points, including 10 goals. A quartet of sophomores who impressed week after week as freshmen are ready to become even bigger contributors and junior Doyle Somerby has made marked improvements over his first two seasons. The Brandons - Fortunato and Hickey - formed an impressive pairing last year, combining for 35 points (7g, 28a) and certainly did not look like rookies during the Terriers postseason run. Classmates Brien Diffley ( ), a puck mover, and John MacLeod (2-7--9), a physical d-man, also contributed on the offensive end. One of the six may be have to work his way into the lineup this year, however, as Charlie McAvoy, one of the top blueline prospects for next year s NHL Draft, joins the squad from the U.S. NTDP. Shane Switzer is another freshman d-man who adds even more depth to this unit. GOALTENDING 1 returning, 1 back from redshirt, 2 lost, 1 new After missing last year due to a medical redshirt, Sean Maguire is back in goal for the Terriers. A veteran of 35 starts from his first two seasons, he s put up an impressive.923 save percentage thus far in his career. Connor LaCouvee, who was a solid backup (2.58 GAA,.913 sv%) to O Connor last year, returns for his sophomore year and will be given every shot to earn regular time in between the pipes. The group will be bolstered by freshman Max Prawdzik, who was ISL Player of the Year after leading The Brooks School to the New England prep title. O Regan may move back to center for his senior campaign and he s likely to be supported by classmate Ahti Oksanen, who blossomed last year after a move from defense to forward. The Finland native potted 25 goals, including a team-best nine on the power play. Lane, senior Mike Moran and juniors Robbie Baillargeon and Nick Roberto come into the year with loads of experience and will be counted on to be leaders and steady contributors. Lane put up 18 points (8g, 10a) and Baillargeon (3g, 10a) and Roberto (4g, 8a) added 13 and 12 points, respectively. Moran was solid as the fourth-line center. That group will be joined by three sophomores who took regular spots in the lineup last year as freshmen. Nikolas Olsson proved to be a pleasant surprise, setting a physical tone and also chipping in on the offensive end. A.J. Greer evolved into a top-six wing by the time the postseason came around and Chase Phelps was a stalwart on the fourth line. BU will add four freshmen to their forward group, including two who were picked in the second round of this summer s NHL Entry Draft. Jakob Forsbacka Karlsson (Boston Bruins) is an impressive two-way center and Jordan Greenway (Minnesota Wild) is a power forward with an imposing 6-5, 223-pound frame. Bobo Carpenter tied for the goal-scoring lead in the USHL last year and Ryan Cloonan was one of the USPHL s most dynamic forwards. DEFENSEMEN 6 returning, 1 lost, 2 new There is certainly a case to be made that BU will boast the nation s best group of defensemen this year. With the entire group back, their chemistry will arguably be the squad s best asset.

19 Career Record: (2 seasons) After orchestrating the biggest turnaround in Boston University hockey history in , including Hockey East and Beanpot titles and a spot in the national title game, David Quinn enters his third season as the head coach at his alma mater. Last season, the Terriers enjoyed an 18-win improvement from the campaign, marking the fifth-best turnaround in NCAA men s hockey history. BU posted a record with the.744 winning percentage ranking second in the country. After leading BU to its 30th Beanpot crown, Quinn guided the Terriers to the Hockey East regular-season and tournament titles before earning the No. 3 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. Quinn became just the fourth men s coach ever to win his first three NCAA tournament games, as the Terriers won the NCAA Northeast Regional before defeating top-ranked North Dakota in the Frozen Four to reach the NCAA title game. He was named runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Award, given annually to the top Division I coach in the nation, and was selected as both the Hockey East and New England Coach of the Year. The former BU associate head coach and Colorado Avalanche assistant was named the 11th head coach in the storied history of BU hockey on March 26, Since returning to campus, Quinn and his staff have strengthened the future of the program by securing commitments from some of the very best prospects in North America. Quinn, who played at BU from , replaced his former head coach and mentor, Jack Parker. An All-Hockey East and All-New England defenseman at BU and a co-captain during his senior year of , Quinn came back to campus in 2004 to become the team s associate head coach, a role he served in for five seasons. Quinn s recruiting efforts were instrumental in helping build BU s 2009 national championship team. During his time as associate head coach, he worked primarily with the team s defensemen, turning the unit into arguably the best in the nation. All six of the defensemen from the 2009 title squad have reached the National Hockey League. After helping the Terriers reach the pinnacle of college hockey, Quinn left to join the Avalanche organization as the head coach of its American Hockey League affiliate in Cleveland, the Lake Erie Monsters. He compiled a record in three seasons with Lake Erie and guided the Monsters to their first-ever playoff berth in He was named an assistant coach on former BU teammate Joe Sacco s staff at Colorado prior to this season. Quinn s coaching career, which began as an assistant at Northeastern University at 1994, has also been highlighted by several successful stints with USA Hockey. Prior to serving as the Terriers associate head coach, he spent two years as head coach of the Under-17 Team. Playing against older opponents, the U17 team qualified for the North American Hockey League playoffs for only the third time in program history, finishing with a record above.500 for the first time ever. The squad owned a 10-3 record in international play, including a first-place finish at the Four Nations Cup in Magnitogorsk, Russia, and at the Under-18 Four Nations Vlado Druzilla in Piestany, Slovakia, where the team played up an age group. For his accomplishments, USA Hockey named Quinn as the 2003 USA Hockey Developmental Coach of the Year. Quinn s coaching career began prematurely, as it was thought he would enjoy an excellent playing career both on the international and professional levels. A member of the U.S. National Junior Team that captured the bronze medal at the 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship, Quinn made himself a strong candidate for the 1988 and 1992 U.S. Olympic Men s Ice Hockey Teams. In addition, he was the 13th player selected in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft when the Minnesota North Stars made him their first-round selection. However, his hopes for an Olympic Team berth and a career in the NHL came to an end prior to his senior year at BU when he was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Christmas Disease that ultimately ended his hockey-playing career. After trying to play two seasons of professional hockey, he took the assistant position at Northeastern, where he was responsible for recruiting, off-ice conditioning, scouting and video coordination. In July 1996, Quinn was named the top assistant coach and head recruiter for the University of Nebraska Omaha. There he helped establish the school s first Division I men s ice hockey program, which began playing during the season. Quinn then joined the USA Hockey National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Mich. The program, designed to prepare student-athletes under the age of 18 for participation on U.S. National Teams and to develop their future hockey careers, focuses its efforts on high-caliber participation on the ice and creating well-rounded individuals off the ice. Quinn served as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Team at four IIHF World Championships -- two with the men s team (2007, 2012) and two with the women s squad (1999, 2000). He helped the women earn the silver medal at both tournaments and also served as an on-ice assistant at the 2001 U.S. Women s Olympic Trials and as a boys coach at the 1995 and 1996 USA Hockey Select Festivals. His involvement with the USA Hockey coaching ranks began in 1995, when he served as a member of the coaching staff for the U.S. Women s Select Camp. A native of Cranston, R.I., Quinn earned a bachelor s degree in sociology from BU in 1989.

20 After spending a decade as a Division I assistant coach throughout the Northeast, former Terrier captain Albie O Connell (CAS 99) returned to Boston University in 2014 to serve as an assistant under head men s ice hockey coach David Quinn. He was promoted to associate head coach prior to the season. Former Boston University, Olympic and National Hockey League standout Scott Young was promoted to assistant coach on head coach David Quinn s staff in September He returned to Commonwealth Ave. in 2014 to become the director of men s ice hockey operations for the Terriers. O Connell came back to Commonwealth Avenue following three-year stints at both Northeastern and Harvard. He spent one season each at Holy Cross and Merrimack after a two-year appointment at Niagara. The Watertown native s coaching career began at Berkshire Prep School in 2002 before he joined the collegiate coaching ranks the following year at Colby. Young, who retired from the NHL in 2006, was the head coach at St. Mark s School - his alma mater - in Southborough for four seasons from He vastly improved the program by leading the Winged Lions to three winning seasons, including their first back-to-back winning seasons in a dozen years. O Connell played in two Frozen Fours (1996, 1997) and helped the Terriers reach the national championship game and claim a Hockey East title as a sophomore. He and his fellow members of the Class of 1999 are one of only four BU classes to win four Beanpots. In 149 career games, O Connell totaled 108 points (42g, 66a) during his four years playing for Coach Jack Parker. As a senior captain, he led the squad in scoring with 39 points (9g, 30a). An inductee in both the Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame and the St. Mark s Athletic Hall of Fame, Young is one of three Terrier hockey alumni to participate in three Olympiads (1988, 1992, 2002) for Team USA and he captured a silver medal with the 2002 squad in Salt Lake City. He also was a member of the U.S. squad that claimed the gold medal at the inaugural World Cup of Hockey in Over the past several seasons, O Connell has become one of the top recruiters in the country, attracting quality student-athletes to the Hockey East, ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey institutions for which he s worked. At Harvard, O Connell worked primarily with the Crimson s defensemen and special teams. In his first season there, he directed the nation s top power-play unit, which operated at a 27.3-percent success rate, and helped the Crimson advance to the ECAC championship game. During his three years at Northeastern ( ), O Connell served as recruiting coordinator and helped the Huskies post 55 wins after the team recorded just 22 wins during the previous three-year span. The Huskies reached two Beanpot finals, two Hockey East semifinals and the 2009 NCAA tournament while O Connell was on the staff. At Merrimack in , O Connell worked primarily with the forwards and the power play while assisting in all aspects of the program. Under his guidance, the Warriors nearly doubled their goal scoring in the season and improved by nine wins. O Connell spent the season at Holy Cross after a two-year stint at Niagara. In addition to coaching in the collegiate ranks, O Connell has also coached extensively with USA Hockey since During his year at Berkshire, he also served as the school s assistant dean of students and the student activities director. The 1986 Hockey East Rookie of the Year, Young was a standout at right wing for the Terriers under Coach Jack Parker, totaling 65 points (31g, 34a) in 71 games over the course of two seasons. After taking his junior year off to compete in his first Olympics, Young turned professional upon his return from the Calgary Games when he signed a contract with the Hartford Whalers, the team that selected him 11th overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Young went on to have an accomplished 17-season NHL career, winning the Stanley Cup twice - first with Pittsburgh in 1991 before raising it once more with Colorado five years later. The only Terrier to win the Cup with two different NHL organizations, Young played for seven NHL franchises and appeared in 1,181 career games, scoring 342 goals and 414 assists for 756 career points. A Clinton, Mass., native, Young participated in three World Junior Championships (1985, 1986, 1987) and was named to the All-Tournament Team in The 1986 squad earned Team USA s first-ever medal at World Juniors, as Young, David Quinn and Mike Kelfer represented BU on that bronze-medal team. USA Hockey also tabbed Young for three World Championship teams (1987, 1989, 1994). A fifth-round draft pick of the New York Islanders in 1994, O Connell played professional hockey for the Pensacola Ice Pilots (East Coast Hockey League) in , Basingstoke Bison (British National League) in , Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (ECHL) in and Cardiff Devils (BNL) in In 127 pro games, O Connell posted 54 goals and 78 assists for 132 points. O Connell graduated from BU in 1999 with a bachelor s degree in history.

21 MIKE GERAGOSIAN VOLUNTEER ASSISTANT COACH 17TH SEASON CHRIS DYMENT DIRECTOR OF HOCKEY OPERATIONS 1ST SEASON Mike Geragosian, a former All-New England goaltender at the University of Massachusetts Lowell who has coached goaltenders for over 30 years, will be entering his 17th season on the Terrier staff. Geragosian began his coaching career at his alma mater in During the next 12 years, his responsibilities at Lowell were primarily with the goaltenders. During his first eight years there, the River Hawks were a dominant Division II team, winning both the Eastern College Athletic Conference and NCAA titles in 1979, 1981 and 1982, while the 1980 team won the ECAC championship. He remained at Lowell during the program s transition to Division I play as a member of Hockey East, and was the assistant coach in charge of the goaltenders when the River Hawks advanced to the semifinals of the Hockey East tournament in He was also on the staff when UML received its first-ever bid to the NCAA Division I tournament in Geragosian, who was inducted into the River Hawks Hall of Fame in 1981, left Lowell in 1992 to serve as the goaltender coach at Princeton University. At the same time, he was the director of development for goaltenders for USA Hockey in Massachusetts, a position he still holds. Former Boston University co-captain and All-American defenseman Chris Dyment has returned to the program to serve as the director of hockey operations. Dyment spent the past two seasons as head coach of the New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs of the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). He ran day-to-day operations for the Hooksett, N.H., organization, including recruiting, contract negotiation, practices, game preparations and trades. In addition to the USPHL season, he also put together and coached teams for spring and summer showcases. After his senior year at BU in 2002, Dyment embarked on a professional playing career that lasted seven years, four of which were in the American Hockey League (AHL). He won the Calder Cup with the Houston Aeros in 2003 and then played a season with the Springfield Falcons before spending two years with the Providence Bruins, where he served as an assistant captain. As a Terrier, Dyment was a member of three Beanpot championship teams (1999, 2000, 2002) and was a two-time selection to the ACHA All-America Second Team (2000, 2002). He was named a Hockey East First Team All-Star as sophomore before earning second-team honors his senior year, when he was tabbed the Hockey East Best Defensive Defenseman. He then returned to Hockey East in 1994 to take over as the goalie coach at Merrimack, where he remained through the 1999 season. Twice during his tenure his goalies garnered All-Hockey East honors. Still holder of the ECAC record for most saves in a playoff game with 64 against Vermont during the 1972 tournament, Geragosian is a well-respected tutor and clinician, conducting several hockey schools in the area. Dyment earned one of the team s major awards each of his final three seasons, receiving the Most Improved Player Award in 2000 before being named the recipient of the Clifford P. Fitzgerald Scholarship the following year. As a senior, he earned the Bennett McInnis Award for Spirit. In 142 collegiate games, Dyment tallied 72 points (20g, 52a) for the Terriers. At the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, Dyment was selected by the Montreal Canadiens with the first pick of the fourth round (97th overall). Mike and his wife, Diane, reside in North Andover, Mass., and have a daughter, Leah, and three sons, Craig, Adam and Brian. After his time in the AHL, Dyment was an assistant captain with the Florida Everblades in the ECHL before spending a year playing for the Cortina Squirrels in Italy s Serie A. His final stop was with the ECHL s Trenton Devils, where he served as team captain during their campaign. Dyment earned a bachelor s degree in sociology from BU s College of Arts of Sciences. Following his professional career, he stayed in hockey by serving and a skills instructor in Burlington, Reading, Andover and North Andover.
