Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. each night MT AFA is in first place in the league with 32 points while Mercyhurst is in third place with 30. Radio/Internet All games will be broadcast in Colorado Springs on The Sports Animal AM 1300 and on the internet at Pregame show begins 30 minutes before faceoff each day. Jay Ritchie will call the play-by-play while Dave Toller will be the color analyst. All AHA games and all home games will be video streamed with audio by America One Television. Subscriptions can be purchased at The Coach Head coach Frank Serratore is in his 15th season at Air Force with a record of record (546 games). He is the winningest coach in the history of Air Force hockey, having led Air Force to four AHA championships and four NCAA Tournaments in the last five years. In his 19th season as a collegiate head coach, he has an overall record of (694 games). Coaching Milestones Head coach Frank Serratore is approaching his 300th career win. He needs two victories to reach the milestone. Serratore needs one win for his 250th at Air Force. He has won 249 at the Air Force Academy and had 49 wins at Denver ( ). Serratore s record at Air Force is above.500 for the first time since his first season at Air Force. Down the Stretch Seven teams are within five points of each other at the top of Atlantic Hockey One weekend series (four points) separates the top five teams: Air Force 32, RIT 31, Mercyhurst 30, Bentley and Niagara with 28. The top four teams in the AHA will get a bye in the first round of the playoffs while seeds five through eight will host seeds nine through 12. In the second round, the top four seeds will host the four remaining teams with the four winners heading to Rochester, N.Y., for the final four. Both playoff series will be a best two out of three. With eight points still available for the final two weekends, eight teams could still earn a bye. Scouting the Mercyhurst Lakers Mercyhurst is in third place in the AHA with 30 points and a record ( overall) The Lakers split a two-game set with Robert Morris last weekend, winning 3-1 at home and falling 4-2 on the road. Prior to that, MU split with Niagara and took one point at RIT. MU is in the last six games Mercyhurst features two of the best freshman forwards in the AHA as Daniel Bahntge leads the team with 28 points and 20 assists. Fellow freshman, Nardo Nagtzaam has 10 goals and 26 points. Junior Paul Chiasson leads the team with 12 goals. Senior Max Strang has seen the most action in the net with a.918 saves percentage and a 2.98 GAA. Recently, sophomore Jordan Tibbett has started the last three games and four of the last five. He has a record of with a goals-against average of 2.40 and a saves percentage of.933. Groundhog Day The beginning of February means that Punxsutawney Phil will search for his shadow and the Air Force hockey team start to play better. Since Air Force joined Atlantic Hockey for the season, the Falcons have played its best hockey in February and March. Beginning with that season, Air Force is in the month of January (including this season). The Falcons are in the months of February and March (including this season, but not including the NCAA Tournament). Air Force was this season in January is now in February. The Streak After a season-long six-game winless skid in January, the Falcons have started a new streak. AFA took two of three last season, including a sweep at Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst is one of only two teams in the league with a winning record against Air Force at Cadet Ice Arena. Earlier this season vs. Mercyhurst Mercyhurst beat Air Force, 3-2, in Erie, Pa. Mercyhurst scored twice in the first period on goals by Tyler Shiplo and Chris Bodo. Nick Jones added a goal early in the third for a 3-0 Laker lead. Chad Demers scored for the Falcons midway through the third period on the power play. AFA pulled the goalie while on the power play late in the game and Tim Kirby scored on the two-man advantage with 2:40 left to make the score 3-2. Max Strang made 32 saves for MU while Stephen Caple made 20 for AFA. AFA outshot MU, HEAD COACH FRANK SERRATORE Frank Serratore (Bemidji State, 1982) is in his 15th season as the Falcons hockey coach. He led Air Force to four AHA Championships and four NCAA appearances (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011). Serratore is the winningest coach in AFA history with a record. He is in his 19th season as a college head coach with a career record. Serratore owns more wins than any other coach in Air Force hockey history. In service academy competition, Serratore is vs. Army overall and vs. the Black Knights while at Air Force. Since Navy does not have a varsity team, the only competition is against Army. Serratore came to the Academy from the Manitoba Moose of the International Hockey League, where he was the director of hockey operations in Serratore was the head coach at Denver from posting a record. 3 44AIR FORCE HOCKEY PAGE 3 Scoring by Committee Seven Falcons have scored 17 or more points this season, led by De Laurell s 32 points. Eight different Falcons have scored five or more goals led by De Laurell s different Falcons have scored Air Force s 23 goals in the last eight games. Down to the Wire This season, Air Force has played 29 games and 22 of them were essentially one-goal games (four were two-goal final deficits including empty-netters) or ended in a tie. AFA is in those games. Five of the six games that were decided by more than a goal (not including empty-netters) were Air Force wins. The other was a 7-1 loss to No. 15 Denver. Going back to last season, nearly 70 percent (46 of the last 66 games) of the games have been decided by one goal or ended in a tie and AFA is in those games. Of those 12 losses, three have come against teams ranked in the top 12 in the nation at the time of the game and nine have come on the road. Between the pipes Over the past 10 games, goaltenders Jason Torf and Stephen Caple have combined for a 1.45 goalsagainst average and a 93.0 saves percentage with a combined record of Since Jason Torf returned from a groin injury, Torf has started seven games (game two vs. Bentley, Army and Canisius and both vs. RIT and Niagara) and Stephen Caple started three games (game one vs. Bentley, Army and Canisius) Over the past 10 games, Torf is with a.938 saves percentage and a 1.40 goals against average. Caple is with a.912 saves percentage and a 1.58 GAA. The Falcons have posted three shutouts in the last six games as Caple shutout Canisius and Torf has blanked RIT and Niagara. Notes from Niagara series AFA won the season series from Niagara, 2-0-1, to extend its unbeaten streak to eight games AFA held Niagara to just 17 shots on Friday, the sixth time this season AFA held its opponent under 20 shots AFA s defensemen have combined to score five of the team s last nine goals Jason Torf earned his second shutout in the last two weeks, and fourth of his career, as he stopped all 17 shots on Friday. He earned a tie on Saturday with 26 saves. Tim Kirby scored his team-leading third game-winner on Friday. Adam McKenzie scored an empty-netter on Friday, his second straight game with a goal. Stephen Carew tied his career high (AIC earlier this season) with two goals in the tie on Saturday. Scott Holm set a new career high with two points (1-1-2) on Saturday. Four different Falcons scored AFA s five goals in the series AFA overcame a two-goal deficit for the third time this season. 4 AIR FORCE HOCKEY PAGE 4 Final Regular Season Home Game for Seniors Saturday s home game vs. Mercyhurst, Feb. 18, marks the final regular-season home game for four Falcon seniors: Stephen Caple, Tim Kirby, Scott Mathis and Paul Weisgarber. The class has won two AHA Championships and competed in two NCAA Tournaments in the last three years. The class has already combined for 79 wins with 28 as freshmen, 16 as sophomores, 20 as juniors and 15 this season. The 79 wins already tie as the third most in school history. The class of 2009 also won 79. The class of 2011 holds the school record with 85 wins ( ). The class of 2010 won 84 games. Caple has played in 33 games in goal, with 20 starts coming this season. He has a record of with a 2.23 GAA and a.907 saves percentage. He enters this weekend with 607 career saves. Kirby has played in 145 games and has 83 career points ( ) with 10 career power-play goals and six career game-winners. Mathis has played in 144 career games and has 87 points ( ) with nine career power-play goals and three game-winners. Weisgarber has played in 145 career games and has 66 points ( ) with two power-play goals, three short-handed goals and two game-winners. Mathis ranks ninth in career scoring by a defenseman while Kirby is 10th. Kirby and Weisgarber have never missed a game in their career, playing in 145 straight games. Since joining Atlantic Hockey for the season, AFA has won 72 percent of its home games ( ) There are two teams in the league that have a winning record against AFA at the Academy. Canisius is vs. AFA while Mercyhurst is : : : : : : Special Teams Tells the Story Air Force is when the Falcons win the battle of the special teams or they are tied However, when the opponent wins the battle of the special teams, AFA is AFA is when winning the special teams and when they are tied. Beating the Nation s Best Over the past four years Air Force has beaten five teams ranked in the top five in the nation at the time of the game. Earlier this season, AFA beat No. 5 Colorado College at the World Arena Last season, Air Force s win over No.3 Yale on Nov. 14, 2010 tied as the highest ranked team Air Force has ever beaten. Both Michigan (2-0 win in NCAA East Regional, March 27, 2009) and Colorado College (4-1 win, Nov. 28, 2008) were also No. 3. When Air Force beat Denver in 2008, the Pioneers were ranked fourth. CIA Bursting at the Seams The last three years, a ticket to Air Force hockey has been a hot commodity and this season is no different AFA has had seven sellouts in 12 home games this season, including a season-high 3,098 vs. Bentley, Jan. 13 In 12 games, AFA is averaging, 2,498 fans in the 2,470 seat arena Air Force is the only school in the nation to average more than a sellout this season (among teams that played all their home games in their home arena). Air Force is averaging percent of its capacity Cadet Ice Arena has been sold out 42 of the last 58 games overall, including 21 of 30 the last two years. Weisgarber finalist for Lowe s Award Senior Paul Weisgarber is one of 10 collegiate hockey players named a finalist for the Lowe s Senior CLASS award, recognizing student-athletes who have combined excellence in athletics, academics and community service. Weisgarber carries a 3.95 GPA in his major of management and has a 3.60 cumulative GPA. He ranks fifth in his major of management and is also a French minor. This past summer, he was selected for the Cadet Summer Research Program and travelled to Hanscom AFB, Mass., helping in the acquisition process of a Joint Urgent Operational Need. Weisgarber has been on the Superintendent s List for excellence in academics, military and physical fitness every semester. He was selected, by vote of his teammates, as a captain as a junior and senior. His leadership was instrumental in helping lead the team to the AHA championship and NCAA appearance last season. Weisgarber has been active in the community as well, volunteering with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)-Walk for the Cure and Gala, the MS Walk, Black Forest Animal Sanctuary, Adopt-A-School Program with Monroe Elementary, Adopt-A-Family for Christmas and the USAF Academy Blood Drive. Weisgarber is the sixth consecutive Falcon to be a finalist for the prestigious award. Billy Devoney (2007), Frank Schiavone (2008), Mike Phillipich (2009), Matt Fairchild (2010) and Jacques Lamoureux (2011) were all finalists. Lamoureux became the first Air Force player in any sport to win the award. Fans are encouraged to vote at through March 18. Fan votes will be combined with media and Division I men s ice hockey head coaches votes to determine the winner. Last Week Air Force took three points in a league series at Niagara, Feb Friday vs. Niagara: Jason Torf made 17 saves and Tim Kirby scored the game winner as Air Force beat Niagara, 2-0. The two teams combined for just eight shots on goal in the first period as Niagara had six and Air Force had a season-low two. The Falcons opened the scoring late in the second period on the power play. After defenseman Mike Walsh drew a penalty, the Falcons capitalized. With 48 seconds left in the period, senior Tim Kirby fired a wrister through traffic that went past the glove of Niagara goalie Chris Noonan for a 1-0 lead. Scott Mathis and Kyle De Laurell assisted on Kirby s 11th of the season. Late in the third period, Niagara pulled its goaltender in favor of the extra attacker. With 1.6 seconds left, Adam McKenzie sealed the win as he picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and shot it into the empty net for his second of the season. Torf earned his second shutout of the season and his second in the last three games as he made 17 saves. Noonan made 23 saves for the Purple Eagles. AFA was 1-for-5 on the power play. Niagara was 0-for-2. AFA outshot Niagara, 25-17, in the game, including a advantage in the final two periods. Saturday vs. Niagara: Air Force battled back from a 3-1 deficit to force a 3-3 overtime tie with Niagara. Early in the first period, on the power play, Stephen Carew sent a wrister from the right point through traffic that beat Chris Noonan high blocker side. Paul Weisgarber and Scott Holm assisted on Carew s sixth of the season, first on the power play. Air Force went back on the power play when George Michalke drew a penalty, but this time it was Niagara that scored. Giancarlo Iuorio tied the game with a short-handed goal at 6:25. Later in the period, NU had 1:47 of a 5-on-3 advantage and Patrick Divjak gave the Purple Eagles a 2-1 lead at 13:16 with a wrister from the right point. Midway through the second period, Niagara took a 3-1 lead on Zanette s 10th of the season. Late in the second period, the Falcon fourth line scored to make the score 2-1. George Michalke won a faceoff in the offensive zone and it led to a flurry in front of Noonan. Holm picked up a loose puck on the weak side and went high over the shoulder of Noonan with 61 seconds left in the period. Linemates Michalke and Ryan Timar assisted on Holm s second of the season. In the third period, Carew stepped in front of a Niagara pass at his own blue line and scored from the top of the right circle to tie the score at 3-3. Niagara outshot Air Force, 29-22, in the game.
