Since they rejoined the CCHA in 1998, MSU has not lost to NMU at home. The MSU-NMU series marks the start of a four-game home stand for the Spartans, the team s longest of the season. The series also marks the start of a six-game stretch that pits the Spartans against teams with a combined record entering the week (NMU, WMU, LSSU, Minnesota and Wisconsin) In each of the past four seasons, MSU has gone on a tear immediately following the Michigan game at Yost. Last season, the Spartans were after travelling to Ann Arbor. In , the Spartans went on a stretch after losing to UM at Yost. In , MSU won 10 of 11 after playing the Wolverines in Ann Arbor and in , State won seven of nine after its contest at Yost. Forward Rustyn Dolyny is averaging nearly a point a game against Northern Michigan during his career. The senior captain from Fort Frances, Ont., has in 10 games against the Wildcats. INJURY REPORT Senior center Andrew Bogle, who sustained a right shoulder injury against Nebraska- Omaha on Oct. 20 and missed both games of the Notre Dame series Oct , returned to the lineup against Michigan. Junior center Joe Goodenow is listed as day-to-day after sustaining a left shoulder injury against Alaska Anchorage. Goodenow has missed MSU s last six games dating back to the Spartans Oct. 14 game vs. Merrimack at the Johnson Nissan Classic in Anchorage, Alaska. Redshirt freshman forward Pat Brush, who missed all of last season with a knee injury, skated in practice for the first time Monday, Oct. 30. He will not play in the Northern Michigan series. LAST WEEKEND S RECAP Goaltender Ryan Miller, in his first career start in Yost Ice Arena, made 31 saves as Michigan State (5-1-1 overall, Central Collegiate Hockey Association) stunned topranked Michigan (6-1-2, 4-1-0), 1-0, in front of a boisterous, standing-room only crowd of 6,521 on Saturday. The win was the first for the Spartans in Ann Arbor since Oct. 25, When we needed the big save, Ryan was there, said MSU senior captain Rustyn Dolyny. But our defense played well tonight, too. They had some good opportunities but we did a good job getting into lanes and didn t give up too many odd-man rushes. Dolyny scored the game s only goal with three minutes remaining in the first period. With Michigan s Andy Burnes in the penalty box serving a two-minute minor for holding, Dolyny blasted a shot from the near point over the right shoulder of Wolverines goaltender Josh Blackburn into the upper right corner of the net. The goal, Dolyny s fourth of the year, extended the Spartan captain s scoring streak to four games while defenseman John- Michael Liles, who assisted on the marker, saw his point streak run to five straight contests. The Spartans were 1-6 on the power play tonight. Michigan was scoreless in four manadvantage opportunities. I didn t expect to score a high percentage on the power play because Michigan is such a great penalty-killing team, said MSU coach Ron Mason. But many times, one powerplay goal will decide the game. 4 HITS AND MISC. The Spartans win at Yost on Saturday was MSU s first in Ann Arbor since Oct. 25, 1997, when State defeated Michigan, 4-2. Saturday s 1-0 whitewash marked the first time the Spartans had blanked the Wolverines since Dec. 9, 1988, when MSU defeated UM, 3-0, at Yost. The Spartans 1-0 win marked the lowest-scoring game in the MSU-UM series since Feb. 26, 1966, when the Wolverines won by a 1-0 margin. The Spartans are now away from home this season after ending the campaign with a road record. MSU goaltender Ryan Miller, who stopped all 31 shots he faced Saturday in his first career start at Yost Ice Arena, has 71 saves on 73 shots over his last two games. He earned his ninth career shutout on Saturday and is three behind Chad Alban on MSU s all-time shutouts list. The Spartans, who were 1-6 on the power play vs. Michigan, have scored nine goals in their last 24 man-advantage opportunities. 10 of MSU s last 14 goals have come with on the power play. MSU s penalty-killing unit, which held Michigan scoreless in four man-advantage opportunities Saturday, has successfully killed 23 of 25 penalties over the team s last five games. Through seven games this season, five players Maloney, Dolyny, Adam Hall, Jeremy Jackson and Liles have accounted for 67.3 percent of MSU s points and 70 percent of the team s goals. THRILLER MILLER MSU goaltender Ryan Miller continues his torrid play in goal for the Spartans. The sophomore from East Lansing, Mich., notched the ninth shutout of his career and the first in the campaign by turning aside all 31 shots he faced in the 1-0 win over Michigan, earning CCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time in a row in the process. Miller needs just three shutouts to match the school record for career whitewashes currently held by Chad Alban. Miller, who has allowed two or fewer goals in six straight starts after giving up four goals in the season opener vs. Alaska Anchorage, has stopped 96 of the 99 shots he s faced in his last three starts. Those numbers include a career-high 40 saves against Notre Dame in a 3-2 MSU win on Oct. 27. Miller enters the NMU series as the CCHA s leader in both goals against average (1.56) and saves percentage (.945). He is now the school s career leader in both categories, having made his 30th career start the minimum required for inclusion in MSU s all-time goaltending record books against Notre Dame last month. Miller has also started 12 consecutive games for the Spartans dating back to the first round of the 2000 CCHA playoffs vs. Miami. ROLLIN DOLYNY Senior captain Rustyn Dolyny scored the lone goal in Saturday s game against Michigan and now ranks tied for second among MSU players in points with Of Dolyny s four goals this season, three have come with the man advantage. Dolyny, the owner of a four-game point streak, has scored at least one point in 12 of the Spartans last 13 games dating back to the regular season finale vs. Notre Dame on March 4. The Fort Frances, Ont., native, who has during that span, needs 37 points to move into the top 30 on MSU s all-time scoring list. Dolyny s goal vs. Michigan was the 60th marker in an MSU uniform and his assist on Adam Hall s second-period goal at Notre Dame on Oct. 27 was the 120th point of his Spartan career. MSU is this season when he scores a point and, since the start of the season, the Spartans are when Dolyny records a point. LILES PILES IT ON Defenseman John-Michael Liles has been a big reason the Spartans power play has a.282 success rate through seven games this season. The sophomore from Zionsville, Ind., has tallied on the season and has a point in each of MSU s last five contests. Liles has scored both of his goals and notched each of his four assists with the man advantage. LIFE OF BRIAN Sophomore forward Brian Maloney owns the team lead in scoring with through seven games this season. The Bassano, Alberta, native, who opened the season with two goals and an assist at Alaska Anchorage on Oct. 13, has scored at least one point in four of the Spartans last five games and is during that span. Maloney, who also leads the Spartans with 20 penalty minutes, has scored at least one point in 13 of MSU s last 15 games dating back to the team s 3-3 tie vs. Michigan at Joe MSU HOCKEY MEDIA INFORMATION PRESS BOX: Michigan State s working press facilities are located on the south side of Munn Ice Arena.
