Ranked at No. 14, the Miami hockey team heads to Yost Ice Arena for this series, an arena in which it has only managed two wins in 36 all-time contests. MICHIGAN SERIES NOTES Michigan leads at Oxford UM leads at Ann Arbor UM leads on neutral ice UM leads Last season s series: at Miami, L, 2-3 (OT) at Miami, L, 2-5 Current Streak: UM 12 wins Not only are the RedHawks attempting to put an end to their 12-game losing streak to the Wolverines, but they also are seeking their first win in Ann Arbor in 14 games. The last time Miami defeated the Wolverines in Yost Ice Arena was a 4-3 decision on Nov. 18, 1994, and last win anywhere against UM was a 4-3 victory at home on Jan. 24, Coach Blasi and the RedHawks square off against head coach Red Berenson and the Wolverines at 7:35 p.m. on Saturday night, and 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon. MIAMI VERSUS MICHIGAN: Most Miami players do not have many fond memories of the Michigan series, in which the Wolverines have dominated the RedHawks, Twelve of the RedHawk s 14 wins have come at home, and their only two on the road where all prior to the arrival of coach Blasi. Last season, the Wolverines came into Goggin Ice Arena and swept the RedHawks with 3-2, and 5-2 decisions. The 3-2 contest, however, was Miami s third overtime loss to UM, bringing its overtime record against the Wolverines to In 72 contests against Michigan, the Red and White has won 6-of-14 one-goal games, which accounts for nearly half of its 14 all-time victories against UM. Miami s largest margin of victory against UM was a 5-1 win on Jan. 21, 1983, and its worst defeat was a 13-0 blanking at Yost Ice Arena on Jan. 6, HAPPY NEW YEAR: Over the years the Miami hockey team has fared well in its first game of the New Year, breaking off 13 wins and only eight losses in 24 games that mark the beginning of the New Year. With a record in first-of-the-year contests, the RedHawks have had a tendency to struggle in that second game, posting a record in the year s second game. Overall, Miami is in the year s first series. The last time Miami won its first game of the New Year was a 4-2 victory at Bowling Green on Jan. 8, 2000.

2 2 MIAMI QUICK FACTS HEAD COACH ENRICO BLASI: Blasi (Miami 94) is in his fourth season as head coach of the Miami ice hockey program. Two years ago Blasi continued his ascent up the CCHA ranks by being named CCHA Coach of the Year after leading Miami to a conference mark. Last season, however, the RedHawks stumbled to a 10thplace finish in the CCHA. A 1994 graduate of Miami, Blasi made his debut as a collegiate head coach in , guiding the RedHawks to a mark and a ninth-place CCHA finish. His 13 wins were the second-highest total among first-year coaches in NCAA Division I hockey. As a player at Miami from , Blasi finished his career with 123 ( ) points. ASSISTANT COACHES: Jeff Blashill (Ferris State 98) Chris Bergeron (Miami 93) Volunteer Asst. Barry Schutte (Miami 97) Admin. Asst. Mark Maturi (Wisconsin 00) Record: , CCHA Letterwinners Returning (10):, Edwardson, Hogeboom, Jardine, Knupp, Kompon, Medvecz, Pomaranski, Sipotz, Stewart. NCAA Appearances: Two NCAA Record: 0-2 Home Arena: Goggin Ice Arena (2,200) Record at the Goggin: All-time Record: ,.446 BLASI BY THE NUMBERS Blasi Year-by-Year Year Overall CCHA CCHA Pct Total Blasi by Month Total Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Total SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES: The Wolverines enter this weekend s series with a lot at stake after having lost their last three out of four contests, including a two-game setback at CCHA rival Northern Michigan on Dec Also, Michigan is only two points behind Miami in the CCHA standings, which means this could be a pivotal weekend series in Ann Arbor. Leading the way with ten goals for the Wolverines is freshman Jeff Tambellini, who is tied for third on the team in points with 13 ( ). The point-scoring leader for UM is sophomore Dwight Helminen with 15 points on six goals and a team-best nine assists. Tied with Tambellini is senior Mark Mink and sophomore David Moss, each with five goals and eight assists for 13 points. The surprise face between the pipes this season for head coach Red Berenson, who has a career record, is the play of freshman netminder Al Montoya. Montoya is in 18 games, and ranks in the nation s top-20 in goals against average (2.24), save percentage (.916) and winning percentage (.694). Michigan s penalty-killing unit has been spectacular this season stopping 92-of-100 (.920) opponent power-play opportunities. The Wolverines PK unit is the nation s second most proficient penalty killer. ONE LAST UM VS. MIAMI TIDBIT: Michigan s 13-0 defeat of Miami on Jan. 6, 1996 was not just a tough loss, but it also was the second-highest scoring total by a Miami opponent. Bowling Green holds that record with a 15-spot in a 15-2 Miami loss on Oct. 27, The Wolverines 13 goals on Jan. 6, however, is the last time that the Red and White has allowed an opponent to score 10-plus goals. OH, THE WELLS FARGO CUP: In its first appearance at the Wells Fargo Denver Cup since , when it took the title, the Red and White squared off against the host school, Denver, in the opening semifinal game. Unlike its showing against the Pioneers five years ago, Miami failed to score at all as DU cruised to a 6-0 victory. The first period would have ended in a 0-0 tie if not for a backbreaking goal by the Pioneers with less that thirty seconds remaining. This swung the momentum Denver s favor as it notched four more goals in the second period to take a 5-0 lead. Wade Dubielewicz played magnificently in the crease for Denver as he recorded the 30-save shutout. Playing its third game against Clarkson in the last two years, the Red and White faced the Golden Knights in the consolation game. Miami got on the board first when sophomore Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored his first of four points with a goal in the first period. Clarkson retaliated with a goal of its own in the first period, but the RedHawks took a 2-1 lead in the second period when freshman Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.) netted a power-play goal. A goal by senior Nick Jardine (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) proved to be the game-winner, and Grant finished the victory off with an empty-net goal. CLARKSON GIVES UP CAREER NIGHT TO TWO REDHAWKS: In the process of defeating Clarkson 4-2 at the Denver Cup, two RedHawks were fortunate enough to notch career highs against the Golden Knights. Grant, who scored the first and last goals for the RedHawks, recorded his first career two-goal game, two-assist game, and fourpoint game, respectively. Also doing some damage against Clarkson was Greene who tallied his first career three-point contest with one goal and two assists. POWER-PLAY UNIT ALIVE AND WELL: The Miami power-play unit has worked itself through a tough stretch, and is now back on track as it scored three goals against Clarkson at the Wells Fargo Denver Cup. Its three power-play goals against Clarkson was the first time that the Red and White had scored that many extra-man goals since its Nov. 23 contest against Alaska Fairbanks. OFFENSE IS KEY TO VICTORY: One of the keys to victory this season for the RedHawks has not been defense, but instead the offense. The RedHawks notched four goals for the first time in four games in the 4-2 victory over Clarkson, which bring their record to a perfect when they score four-plus goals. OFFENSE DROPS TO EIGHT IN THE NATION: Entering the Ohio State series the RedHawks had the nation s second most potent offense, but after scoring only four goals against OSU the RedHawk offense dropped to No. 6 with a 4.39 goals per game clip, and is now at No. 8 (4.15). The OSU series marked the first time this season that the Red and White failed to score at least four goals in a two-game set. Miami s previous low was four goals in its split at Notre Dame on Nov. 8-9.

3 THE END OF A ROUGH ROAD: The RedHawks finish up the toughest part of their schedule this weekend at Michigan. In its previous six games, Miami has played against four of the nation s top teams. Ohio State was ranked No. 14 in the nation, and then Miami took on the No. 6 Denver Pioneers at the Wells Fargo Denver Cup on Dec. 27. PENALTY-KILLING UNIT LAPSES AT OHIO STATE: The RedHawks allowed four power-play goals in OSU s 5-3 win on Dec. 7, and five for the two-game series, both season worsts. In its series split at home against St. Lawrence, Miami allowed the Saints to score four power-play goals in the series and three in the first game. POWER-PLAY GENIUS: Junior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) has been putting on a power-play clinic this season, netting seven power-play goals in 16 games. He scored two against Alaska Fairbanks to move him into a tie for third in the nation. With four more power-play goals, Hogeboom can crack the top-ten single-season record list for power-play goals. MIAMI DROPS TO NO. 14 IN THE NATIONAL POLLS: On Monday, Nov. 25, the RedHawks received their highest national ranking in recent years by coming in at No. 11 in both the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine coaches poll and the USCHO.com poll. However, after getting beat twice at Ohio State, the RedHawks remain in the top- 15 but have dropped to No. 13. TEAM SCORING RECORD IN SIGHT: As the RedHawks enter the toughest part of their schedule, their 4.40 goals per game clip sets them on a pace for the school record in scoring. The Miami all-time record for goals in a season is 189 set in At its current pace the Red and White will score 180-plus goals at the end of the regular season. This does not take into account the guaranteed two games the RedHawks would play in the CCHA playoffs. FAST OFF THE BLOCKS TO 12 WINS: With 12 wins under their belts, the RedHawks have equaled last year s win total, and have reached the dozen-victory mark faster than any other Miami team. The previous record for reaching 12 wins was Dec. 6 by the team, which finished the year and earned an NCAA Tournament REDHAWKS AT A GLANCE No. Name Pos. FACE-OFF SHOW WITH ENRICO BLASI MOVES TO NEW NIGHT: Previously on Monday nights, now you can join coach Blasi and Dave Allen EVERY Tuesday night at 7 p.m. on the Miami Hockey Face-off Show With Enrico Blasi. The one-hour long talk show includes segments on the previous weekend of competition, player and opposing coach interviews, and a look at the upcoming weekend series. Not only is the show on a new night, but it also features a phone line that listeners can use to call-in to and ask coach Blasi questions. The studio phone number is OFFENSE LEADS THE WAY TO 10-PLUS VICTORIES: With its home-and-home series sweep of Findlay, Miami not only moved up to No. 11 in the national rankings, but it also became the first team to post 10 or more victories this season. One of the primary reason s for Miami s fast start is its offense that averages 4.76 goals per game, which enters the UAF series ranked third behind only Quinnipiac and Boston College. FIRST TOURNEY TITLE SINCE THE 1997 DENVER CUP: When the RedHawks won the Lefty McFadden Invitational Oct. 4-5 they ended a four-year drought since their last tournament title. The last tourney title claimed by a Miami hockey team was the 1997 Denver Cup on Dec Miami defeated the tournament host, Denver, 9-6 in the first game, and clinched the cup with a 4-2 defeat of New Hampshire. IT WAS A LONG NOVEMBER: It was a long month of November for Miami opponent s as the RedHawks held opponents to a slim 2.1 goals per game, and only three powerplay goals in 42 chances (.929). Senior goalie David posted a 1.92 goals against average and.929 save percentage in seven November contests. Also, the RedHawks converted 16-of-48 power plays (.333). Juniors Edwardson and Kompon paced the offensive players with 11 points a piece. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED, TEN KILLED: In a 3-1 victory on Nov. 8 at Notre Dame the RedHawks were called for 10 penalties, but not a single one resulted in a Fighting Irish goal as they killed all 10 Notre Dame power plays. It was the first time since the Red and White defeated Clarkson, 4-1, on Oct. 13, 2000 that an opponent went 0-for-10 on the power play. SIX SIGN NATIONAL LETTERS OF INTENT TO PLAY AT MIAMI: Miami University head ice hockey coach Enrico Blasi announced this week the early signing of six incoming freshmen to National Letters of Intent for the 2004 season. The early signees include four forwards and two goaltenders. Geoff Smith (Lewisville, Texas/Texas Tornado), a 5-foot-10, 180-pound center with the Tornados of the North American Hockey League has agreed to join the Miami hockey family for the season. In 21 games this season with the Tornados, Smith paces the team with nine goals and 14 assists for a team-best 23 points. His 14 assists pace the squad, while his two game-winning goals have both been in overtime. Smith and the Tornados are currently first in the West Division of the NHL. Geoff is a true playmaker, in that he sees the ice and the action around him very well, Blasi says. He is a very competitive player and a good addition to the team. Also joining the Red and White from the NAHL is Compuware Ambassadors forward, Nino Musitelli (Macomb, Mich./Compuware Ambassadors). While helping the Ambassadors to first place in the East Division, the 5-foot-8, 180-pound Musitelli has registered six goals and six assists for 12 points in 13 games. Like Smith, Musitelli also has struck for two game-winning goals, which is tied for the Compuware team lead. We have recruited a very skilled forward in Nino Musitelli, Blasi says. He quite simply is a very good skater and can put the puck in the net. Coach Blasi and his staff also have signed two recruits this year out of the prestigious Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. Signing with Miami from the Aurora Tigers is the 5-foot-10, 180-pound forward, Matt Christie (Ajax, Ontario/Aurora Tigers), and Joe Cooper (Ontario/St. Michael s Buzzers), a 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward with the St. Michael s Buzzers. Christie has been the more prolific scorer of the two OPJHL representatives with 16 goals and 17 assists for 33 points, both of which are second on the Tigers squad. Cooper also has been a solid production guy with 18 points ( ) in 16 games with the Buzzers. Matt is an offensive force who can put the puck in the net, just a good all-around player, Blasi says. Joe is a big, powerful forward that goes to the net well. He has a knack for finding the front of the net. Rounding out Miami s early signees are two goaltenders from the United States Hockey League and the Central Junior Hockey League, respectively. Brandon

5 Crawford-West (San Diego, Calif./Tri-City Storm), who played for the Texas Tornados in , is a 5-foot-11, 180-pound goalie that has posted a record and one shutout in 12 games for the Storm. Crawford-West maintains a 2.79 goals against average and.899 save percentage for the fourth-place Storm. Brandon is a very athletic goalie who has the ability to make big saves at those big moments, assistant coach Jeff Blashill says, a former goalie at Ferris State. He has been a top-notch goaltender at juniors for three years now, and has the talent to step-in from day one. Joining Crawford-West between the pipes will be Steve Hartley (Parker, Colo./ Gloucester Rangers), a 6-foot-1, 185-pound goalie from the Gloucester Rangers, and son of Bob Hartley, head coach of the Colorado Avalanche. In the offensive-minded CJHL, Hartley brags a league-best.894 save percentage, while recording a 3.64 goals against average in 1006 minutes in the crease. Steve is a goalie who uses his size well, and this allows him to play good angles and take away the most net possible, Blashill says. It is very evident that Steve has spent a lot of time around Patrick Roy, and you can see it in his style of goaltending. A SINFUL GAME: When Miami and Bowling Green laced up the skates for their Nov. 3 meeting, neither team knew that they would spend a combined 82 minutes in the penalty box. A total of 24 penalties were whistled in the contest, four of which were of the 10-minute variety. This marked the highest combined total in a game for the RedHawks since they combined with Notre Dame for 102 penalty minutes on Nov. 4, HOGEBOOM TAKES FIRST STEP TOWARDS THE SHOW: This summer at the NHL Entry Draft in Toronto, Ontario junior Greg Hogeboom (Etobicoke, Ontario) made his first step towards the pros when he was selected in the fifth round of the draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Hogeboom was the 152nd player taken overall after being ranked 178th by the NHL s Central Scouting Service prior to the draft. He was one of 24 Central Collegiate Hockey Association players selected in the draft, and Miami s only draftee in the 2002 draft. In Hogeboom was second on the team with 14 goals and 23 points ( ). Hogeboom also was tied for 13th in the nation with two short-handed goals. When I heard my named called it was the most exhilarating thing in the world, Hogeboom says. Playing professional hockey has always been what I ve wanted to do. Being drafted takes me one step closer to that dream. BLASI ENTERS FOURTH SEASON: After a solid first season, which ranked him second in the nation in wins (13) among NCAA Division I first-year coaches, Miami head coach Enrico Blasi improved his record, leading the RedHawks to a second-place finish in the Central Collegiate Hockey Conference in Last year, however, the RedHawks staggered a bit with a record and tenthplace finish in the CCHA. In four seasons Blasi has a overall record at Miami. After leading the RedHawks to a mark in , Blasi was recognized as the CCHA Coach of the Year. Blasi, a former Miami player and 1994 graduate, joined the program two years ago after serving as an assistant under former Miami mentor George Gwozdecky at the University of Denver. A native of Weston, Ontario, Blasi lettered at Miami from and served as an assistant captain during Miami s only CCHA Championship run during the season. BURLEIGH SETS CAREER WIN MARK AT MIAMI: With a 12-1 victory and 13-save performance against Air Force on Oct. 4 at the Lefty, senior goalie David moved past Richard Shulmistra 94 for the all-time record at Miami with 41 wins. already has ownership of the Miami shutout record with eight career blankings. RECORD WATCH: is in striking distance of setting career records this season in games played and saves. has already surpassed Mark Michaud s career record of 108 games played, and is 418 saves from Michaud s 2,856 career saves. Senior Danny Stewart (Fort McMurray, Alberta) also can permanently place himself in the Miami record books this season. The program, which airs weekly until March 18, can also be heard on the Internet by logging onto the league s official web site at WHITE TEAM TAKES RED-WHITE SCRIMMAGE CROWN: RedHawk fans were treated to the annual Red-White scrimmage on Sunday, Sept. 29, which featured the White team seeking revenge after its skills competition loss. Hogeboom struck quickly for the White team with a wrist shot into corner of the goal only 37 seconds in the scrimmage. Registering assists on Hogeboom s goal were freshman forward Jesse Boucher (Markham, Ontario) and junior forward Mike Kompon (Thunder Bay, Ontario). The White team upped its lead to 2-0 at 12:03 when freshman Chris Michael (Skokie, Ill.) connected for a goal of his own after receiving a feed from classmate Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich.). Also recording an assist on Michael s goal was Kompon, his second assist of the scrimmage and period. Freshman Vince Pulera (Kenosha, Wisc.), still fresh after his fastest skater event, narrowed the Red team s gap 2-1 in the final minute with a goal at 16:16. Assisting on the goal were junior Ben Tharp (Hastings, Minn.) and senior forward Nick Jardine. The second period featured less scoring, and less penalties, as Boucher scored the only goal of the stanza for the White team at 6:15. Helping Boucher score were sophomores Chris Busby (Kenilworth, Ill.) and Todd Grant (Indianapolis, Ind.) who both were credited with assists. Holding the Red team to only one goal was David who stopped 11 shots en route to the scrimmage victory. Senior David Bowen (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and junior Nick Petraglia (Faribault, Minn.) split time in the crease for the Red team.
