THE SECOND SEASON BEGINS: The Notre Dame hockey team returns to action this weekend as the Irish play host to the Ferris State Bulldogs in the best-of-three CCHA quarterfinal round at the Joyce Center. The series begins on Fri., March 14 at 7:35 p.m. with game two on Sat., March 15 at 7:05 p.m. and game three, if necessary, is set for Sun., March 16 at 7:05 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on the Notre Dame website - und.com. Notre Dame received a bye in the opening round of the CCHA playoffs as the Irish finished fourth in the regular season. Ferris State reached the quarterfinals with a firstround sweep of Western Michigan, winning 4-3 in overtime in the series opener and then 6-3 in game two on March 8. The Irish enter the playoffs with a overall record and finished the CCHA regular season with a mark. After starting the season , Notre Dame is during the second half of the year. Ferris State finished fifth in the CCHA with a mark and is overall on the year. The Bulldogs finished the year strong, going in their last 10 games. The winner of this series advances to the CCHA semifinals on March 21 at Joe Louis Arena. IRISH VERSUS THE BULLDOGS: The two teams have met 60 times in the all-time series with Ferris State holding a edge. This season, the two teams met four times with Ferris State going in those games. He passes the mark of 153 that was set by Tim Wallace 06 who did not miss a game in his four seasons ( ). Van Guilder has now played in every game of his career and is tied for third all-time in games played with 154. The next player with a shot at the record is junior Erik Condra (Livonia, Mich.). Condra comes into the CCHA playoffs having played in every game of his career to date consecutive games. In those games, he has a 1.77 goals-against average and a.925 save percentage. Earlier this season, Pearce had a personal seven-game winning streak between Nov. 16 and Dec. 8. During the streak, Pearce was with a 1.72 goalsagainst average and a.902 save percentage. For the season, Pearce is with a 1.94 goalsagainst average and a.916 save percentage with two shutouts. A LEAGUE TITLE: Notre Dame goaltender Jordan Pearce closed out the CCHA regular season with the best goals-against average in conference games, giving up 1.80 goals-per game. Miami s Jeff Zatkoff was second with a 1.83 mark. This marks the second season in a row that a Notre Dame goaltender has won the goals-against title as David Brown was first in with a 1.77 league mark. PACKING THE PLACE: Notre Dame finished the regular season with sellout crowds in each of its last eight games (including the U.S. Under-18 exhibition game). FIRING AWAY: The 36 shots on goal that Ferris State recorded on Feb. 9 in the 5-3 loss for Notre Dame were the most shots given up by the Irish in a game this season. The previous season high was 35 at Miami on Nov. 10. FIVE-GOAL NIGHTS: The five goals scored by Ferris State on Feb. 8 marks just the third time in the last two seasons that Notre Dame has given up five goals in a game and the Bulldogs have done it twice. On Feb. 23, 2007, Ferris State defeated Notre Dame, 5-2. On Jan.19 of this season, Michigan downed the Irish, 5-1, for the third time its happened. Under head coach Jeff Jackson, the Irish have given up five or more in a game just eight times in his three seasons (114 games) behind the bench. BACK ON TOP: Through the first 38 games of the season, Notre Dame ranks first in the CCHA and is second in the nation in killing penalties. Notre Dame was in the month, scoring just 11 goals while giving up 17. During the month, the Irish averaged 34.3 shots per game, but scored 11 times in 240 shots for a 4.6% scoring percentage. During the month, Notre Dame was 5-for-40 on the power play (12.5%) while the penalty killers gave up three goals on 29 chances (89.7%). Jordan Pearce was in the month with a 2.09 goals-against average and a.917 save percentage. Notre Dame s top scorer was Erik Condra with two goals and two assists for four points. No other player had more than one goal. NATIONAL RANKINGS: Notre Dame fell to 12th in the nation in both the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com/CSTV polls after the weekend split with Western Michigan on Feb. 29-March 1. The Irish have been in the national rankings for all 22 weeks this season.

Selected along with Van Guilder are: Mark Dekanich (Colgate), Bryce Hollweg (Army), Peter Mannino (Denver), Marty Mjelleli (St. Cloud State), Justin Pesony (St. Lawrence), Kevin Porter (Michigan), Frank Schiavone (Air Force), Topher Scott (Cornell) and Landis Stankievech (Princeton). The 10 players will go on a ballot for nationwide voting that will begin on Feb. 14 and conclude on March 28. Fan balloting is available on the award s website at The CLASS award was designed to honor the attributes of seniors who remain committed to 20 WINS: Notre Dame comes into the series with Ferris State with 22 wins on the season. Combined with last year s 32-win year, Notre Dame now has back-to-back 20-win campaigns for the first time in the program s 40-year history. DEADLINE DEALS: While no former Notre Dame players were dealt during the NHL s recent trade deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 26, one current Irish player saw his rights traded. Defenseman Teddy Ruth (Naperville, Ill.), who was a second-round choice of the Washington Capitals in last June s Entry Draft, saw his rights go to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for future NHL Hall-of-Famer Sergei Federov. SHUTOUTS: Riley Gill s 42-save shutout of the Irish on Feb. 29 marked just the second time this season that Notre Dame failed to score a goal in a game. The previous time came on Nov. 27 at Ferris State when Mitch O Keefe made 37 saves in a 3-0 shutout by the Bulldogs. Over the last three seasons with Jeff Jackson as the coach, the Irish have been shutout seven times (four in and once in 06-07). HOT HANDS: Notre Dame s trio of left wing Dan Kissel (So., Crestwood, Ill.), center Christian Hanson (Jr., Venetia, Pa.) and right wing Evan Rankin (Sr., Portage, Mich.) all have career highs offensively for the Irish this season. Kissel is sixth in scoring with seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points, all career bests. He is followed by Hanson who has career highs in goals (9), assists (8) and points (17). Rankin has seven goals and nine assists for 16 points, also his best numbers in each category. HOME SWEET HOME: After 15 home games this season, Notre Dame is (.700) at the Joyce Center. A year ago, Notre Dame was at home for an.824 winning percentage. That was the best mark since the season when the Irish were at the Joyce Center for an.833 winning percentage. Only two other Irish teams have had better home records team was (.900) and the team was (.893). ON THE PLUS SIDE: Senior defenseman Brock Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alb.) is one of the CCHA s top defensive defensemen. As a junior, he was a finalist for the conference s top defensive defenseman award. This season, Sheahan continues to be a force on the Irish blue line. He is currently +20 for the year to lead the team in that category. His +20 mark ties him for eighth in the CCHA. A year ago, the Irish were (.735) away from the Joyce Center. The 12 road wins equaled a school record ( and ) for road wins. Only the team s road mark (.750) is better. The 10 road wins mark the ninth time in the program s history that the Irish have had 10 or more road wins in a season. NANOOKS NUMBER: The win and the tie at Alaska improved Notre Dame to in its last eight meetings with the Nanooks. The Irish were in , playing Alaska in four regularseason games and two CCHA playoff contests. MR. CONSISTENT: Sophomore defenseman Kyle Lawson has proven to be one of the CCHA s most consistent defensemen this season. A two-time CCHA defenseman of the week this season, Lawson leads all Notre Dame defensemen in scoring with three goals and 16 assists for 19 points. In the series against Alaska, Lawson set up Ryan Thang s game winner in the Feb. 15, 2-1 win, then set up Mark Van Guilder s game-tying goal in the 1-1 tie on Feb. 16. Already this year, he has a power-play goal and a pair of game-winning goals. Lawson s 19 points tie him for 11th among CCHA defensemen this season. He is fourth on the team with a +9 on the year. BALANCED ATTACK: Notre Dame goes into the CCHA playoffs ranked 21st in the nation with 2.87 goals per game. With 109 goals in 38 games, the Irish have just three players with 10 or more goals this season - Ryan Thang with 16, Erik Condra with 14 and Mark Van Guilder with 11. The Irish have accumulated their 109 goals this year with 10 players on the roster having five goals or more. THE GOOD AND THE BAD: Through the first 38 games of the season, when the Irish are good, they are very good. In the 22 wins, Notre Dame has scored 88 goals (4.00 per game). In the 12 losses and four ties, Notre Dame has scored just 21 goals for a 1.31 goals-per game mark. In the 22 wins, the Irish have given up just 31 goals (1.41 goals-against average) while in the 12 losses and four ties, they have given up 47 goals (2.94 goals against). The 2-1 loss to Northern Michigan on Jan. 4 marked the first time all season that the Irish lost a game when giving up two goals or less. BIG MAC GOAL: Brock Sheahan s first goal in 34 games on Friday, Feb. 8 versus Ferris State not only brought a smile to the senior defenseman s face, but made 2,857 fans happy also. Sheahan s goal in the final minute of the second period earned each fan a free Big Mac courtesy of McDonald s Magic Minute, promotion that is a regular in-game promotion at all Irish home games. GETTING THE BOUNCES: Sophomore center Kevin Deeth (Gig Harbor, Wash.) is fourth on the Irish in scoring with eight goals and 13 assists for 21 points. Over his last 17 games, the speedy Deeth has scored eight times and added five assists for 13 points. Four of his eight goals have come on the power play while one was short-handed. BUCKEYE JINX: With a win and a tie at the Joyce Center on Feb , Ohio State extended its unbeaten streak at the Joyce Center to 10 games (7-0-3). The Buckeyes have not lost in South Bend since a 3-0 Notre Dame win on Oct. 23, ONE-GOAL GAMES: Notre Dame s 2-1 win at Alaska on Feb. 15 was the 11th one-goal decision that the Irish have been involved in this season. They started the year by going 6-0 in one-goal games and are now 8-3 on the season.

The Irish finished the season ranked fourth in the final USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll that included the NCAA tournament. The Irish finished the year first in the USCHO.com/CSTV polls that ended with the end of the CCHA Tournament. In all, Notre Dame was ranked for 20 consecutive weeks and was ranked No.1 for seven straight weeks from Feb. 5 to March 25. The Irish have been ranked every week so far this season. Last Saturday (Feb. 23) was a 2-2 tie with Ohio State. The previous Saturday (Feb. 16 was a 1-1 tie at Alaska and the month started with a Saturday tie (Feb. 9) with Ferris State. The fourth tie came on a Sunday afternoon (Jan. 13) with Michigan State. On the year, the Irish are in overtime. Last season, they were in overtime. The three overtime wins were the most for the Irish in a single season. In two-plus seasons under head coach Jeff Jackson, Notre Dame is in extra play. GOING HOME: Irish goaltender Jordan Pearce had a successful return to his home state, picking up a win and a tie versus Alaska on Feb The Anchorage, Alaska native is now in his three games at the Carlson Center. He won his first game there last season, a 3-2 overtime game. ON A ROLL: Notre Dame s two-game series sweep of Bowling Green on Jan gives the Irish a 12-game unbeaten streak (11-0-1) against the Falcons. That streak started with the season. The Irish are also versus Bowling Green over the last two campaigns. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Two Irish players were honored by the CCHA as players of the week for the week ending Jan. 27. Defenseman Brock Sheahan (Sr., Lethbridge, Alb.) was selected as the conference s defenseman of the week. Freshman right wing Ben Ryan (Brighton, Mich.) was selected as the CCHA rookie of the week. In the Bowling Green series, Sheahan had an assist in each game, blocked three shots and was +3 while playing a key role in a 12-for-12 penalty-killing weekend. Ryan had two goals and two assists for four points and was +2. He had an assist in the 6-1 win on Friday and then had a career-best three-point game (2 ppg, 1 assist) in the 4-1 win on Saturday night. BAD BOYS: Notre Dame and Bowling Green combined for 51 penalties and 157 minutes in the two-game series on Jan On Friday night, the two teams had 23 penalties for 97 minutes with the Falcons getting 10-for-44 and the Irish a season-high 13-for-57. On Saturday, Notre Dame had just seven for 14 minutes while the Falcons had an opponent s season high of 11-for-46 minutes. SHINNY ANYONE?: On Monday, Jan. 21, Notre Dame s practice had a different look. The Irish went back to their hockey roots that day as they ventured to nearby Merrifield Park in Mishawaka, Ind., to play a little shinny on the outdoor rink. Complete with temperatures in the single digits, stocking caps, hot chocolate and a great deal of laughter, the Irish spent some time having fun playing the game they love. Smiles were the number one priority and Monday s practice was a smashing success in that area. THE KISSEL EFFECT: Sophomore left wing Dan Kissel has career highs in assists (12) and points (19) this season. For his career, Kissel has played in 54 games with 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points. Of his 13 goals, he has two power-play goals, two shorthanded tallies and four game winners. HOCKEY HUMANITARIAN: Senior defenseman Dan VeNard (Vernon Hills, Ill.) was one of 22 nominees for the College Hockey Humanitarian Award that goes to college hockey s top citizen. The list was cut to 10 on Jan. 28 and VeNard did not advance. The Irish alternate captain has been heavily involved in community service work in and around the Notre Dame campus during his career. He also serves as the president of Notre Dame s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). BUMP IN THE ROAD: Freshman goaltender Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) saw his four-game winning streak snapped on Jan. 19 in the 5-1 loss to Michigan. The rookie netminder played 35:16 of the game, giving up four goals on 19 shots. In the first four starts of his career, Phillips was with a 0.75 goals-against average and a.958 with one shutout. His numbers are currently with a 1.53 goals-against average and a.923 save percentage. BERGMAN RETURNS TO USHL: Freshman left wing Robin Bergman (Stockholm, Sweden) has left the Notre Dame hockey team and returned to the United States Hockey League (USHL). He will play for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, the team he played for last season. In 20 games at Notre Dame, Bergman had one goal and six assists for seven points and was +3 on the year.with Cedear Rapids last season, Bergman had 26 goals and 17 assists for 43 points to finish fourth on the team in scoring. VERSUS THE BEST: Notre Dame failed to record a win in the weekend series with top-ranked Michigan last weekend, the second time this year that the Irish faced the nation s top-ranked team. On Nov. 9-10, Notre Dame met No. 1 ranked Miami twice in Oxford, Ohio, defeating the RedHawks, 2-1, on Nov. 9 befoe dropping a 3-1 decision at Miami on Nov. 10. The Nov. 9 win marked the 10th time in the program s history that the Irish knocked off a top-ranked team. Before losing on Nov. 10, Notre Dame had won four straight versus top 10 teams. At the World Championships, Cole played in all six games and had no points with six penalty minutes as the United States finished fourth in the tournament. He missed four games the two games at the Lightning College Hockey Classic and the Northern Michigan series. Also returning on Friday night was fellow freshman defender Teddy Ruth (Naperville, Ill.). Ruth missed five games (Princeton, Lightning College Classic and two with Northern Michigan) due to an injury. NO GOALS FOR YOU: Junior goaltender Jordan Pearce recorded his second shutout of the season in the 5-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 1. The shutout also was the fourth of his career and moved him into a tie for third with Mark Kronholm 74 on Notre Dame s all-time shutout list. He trails just Morgan Cey 05 (2nd with 6) and David Brown 07 (first with 12). Pearce s first career shutout came in his second career game, a 2-0, 27-save win over Princeton on Oct. 28, Freshman goaltender Brad Phillips recorded his first career shutout on Dec. 8 with a 24-save, 7-0 whitewashing of the Princeton Tigers. LETTERS OF INTENT: Irish head coach Jeff Jackson has announced that three players have signed national letters of intent in the early signing period to attend Notre Dame beginning in the fall of The trio - defensemen Sean Lorenz (Littleton, Colo.) and Eric Ringel (Hinckley, Ohio) and forward Patrick Gaul (Pittsburgh, Pa.) - will join Billy Maday (Burr Ridge, Ill.) who signed in Nov. of 2007 but deferred until next fall. Lorenz and Gaul are members of the U.S. National Team Development Program s Under-18 team. Ringel plays in the North American Hockey League for the Mahoning Valley Phantoms and Maday is a member of the Waterloo Black Hawks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). They opened the year at the Lefty McFadden Classic in Dayton, Ohio, losing to Wisconsin, 4-1, before defeating Mercyhurst, 4-0, to take third place. Over Thanksgiving, the Irish played in the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament, taking the championship with wins over Alabama-Huntsville (4-1) and Rensselaer (4-3). At Tampa, Notre Dame dropped a 4-3 decision to Massachusetts and then took third place with a 3-1 win over Rensselaer. TOURNEY RESULTS: Notre Dame has now participated in 30 in-season tournaments in the program s 40-year history, winning six times and finishing second, six times. The Irish have been third a total of seven times and there have been 11 fourth-place finishes. Notre Dame has now won two of the last four in-season tournaments that the Irish have played in, winning the 2006 Lightning Collegiate Hockey Classic in Oct. of 2006 in Tampa, Fla and the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament, Nov , 2007 in Troy, N.Y. All time, the Irish are in tournament play. ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: Notre Dame placed two players on the 2007 Lightning College Hockey Classic all-tournament team. In the weekend sweep at Princeton, VeNard had two goals and two assists for four points and was +2 on the weekend. His three-point game on Dec. 8 in Notre Dame s 7-0 win was a career high for the blueliner. He now has five goals and three assists for eight points in 20 games this year. In 71 career games prior to this season, VeNard had two goals and six assists for eight points. TWO SHORTIES: Mark Van Guilder and Ryan Thang each scored short-handed goals in the 5-0 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Dec. 1. That marked the first time the Irish had scored a pair of short-handed goals in a game since Dec. 20, 2000 when Brett Lebda 04 and Dan Carlson 01 scored short-handed goals in a 7-3 win at Nebraska-Omaha. As a team, the Irish have seven short-handed goals, the most of any team in the nation. NIFTY NOVEMBER: Notre Dame finished November with a record, including wins in the last six straight. Some other numbers for the month: The Irish were in the CCHA and at home while going on the road and at neutral sites... the Irish out scored the opposition by a margin (3.8 gpg to 1.9 gpg)...notre Dame out shot the opposition by a margin... the Irish were 13-for-52 on the power play (25.0%) and killed 41-of-46 opponent power plays for an 89.1% success rate... Erik Condra (Jr., Livonia, Mich.) led the team in scoring with six goals and 10 assists for 16 points and was followed by Kevin Deeth (So., Gig Harbor, Wash.), Mark Van Guilder (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) and Kyle Lawson (So., New Hudson, Mich.) with 10 points each... Jordan Pearce was with a 2.13 goals-against average and a.900 save percentage... Brad Phillips (Fr., Farmington Hills, Mich.) was with a 1.00 goals-against and a.935 save percentage. TOURNAMENT HARDWARE: Three Notre Dame players were named to the all-tournament team at the Rensselaer Holiday Tournament. Junior right wing Erik Condra recorded three assists on the weekend and was the lone Irish forward selected. Defensemen Brett Blatchford (So., Temperance, Mich.) and Ian Cole joined Condra on the team. Sophomore left wing Ryan Thang was named the tournament MVP after scoring the game-winning goal in each of Notre Dame s victories. HIGHS AND LOWS: Notre Dame s 44 shots in the Nov. 16 win over Western Michigan are a season high for the Irish. The 11 shots given up by Notre Dame on Nov. 17 are the fewest the Irish have given up this season. Notre Dame s 11 power-play chances against Western Michigan (Nov. 16) were also a season high. LONG TIME COMING: Notre Dame s 4-3 win over Denver on Oct. 18 snapped a 10-game (0-9-1) winless streak for the Irish against the Pioneers. The last time they had beaten Denver was Nov. 3, 1978, a 3-2 win at the Joyce Center. Notre Dame and Denver played in the WCHA for 10 years from before the Irish left for the CCHA. Prior to last weekend s series, the two teams had met just three times with Denver going CAPTAINS: Senior right wing Mark Van Guilder will serve as Notre Dame s captain for the season. Joining Van Guilder as alternate captains in 07-08, are senior defensemen Brock Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alb.) and Dan VeNard (Vernon Hills, Ill.). They will be joined by junior forward Erik Condra (Livonia, Mich.). This is the first season for all four players to serve as captains at Notre Dame. MR PRESIDENT: Senior defenseman Dan Ve- Nard has been named president of Notre Dame s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the school year. VeNard served as hockey s representative to the group last season and was selected president by the group in M. The committee represents Notre Dame s studentathletes with the Irish athletic department. NHL DRAFTEES: The Irish have seven players on the roster who have been selected in the National Hockey League s Entry Draft. Last June, a total of five Notre Dame players were selected. Leading the way was freshman defenseman Ian Cole (Ann Arbor, Mich.) who was a first-round selection of the St. Louis Blues who took him with the 18th pick overall. Cole became the first Irish player ever selected in the first round and was selected earlier than any other Notre Dame player (Rob Globke 04 was the previous highest selection when he was picked 40th overall by Florida in 2002). Cole was followed by fellow freshman defenseman Teddy Ruth (Naperville, Ill.) who went in the second round, 46th overall to the Washington Capitals. Sophomore Ryan Thang (Edina, Minn.) was selected in the third round, 81st overall by the Nashville Predators. Incoming freshman Ben Ryan (Brighton, Mich.) joined Thang when the Predators made him the 114th pick (fourth round). Freshman goaltender Brad Phillips (Farmington Hills, Mich.) rounded out the Notre Dame selections in the last draft when the Philadelphia Flyers selected him in the seventh round, 182nd overall. Those five join junior right wing Erik Condra (Livonia, Mich.) who was selected in the seventh round, 211th overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2006 and sophomore defenseman Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich.) who was selected in the 2005 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes in the seventh round, 198th overall. FAMILY MATTERS: Two members of the Notre Dame hockey team forwards Erik Condra and Garrett Regan (Hastings, Minn.) have family ties to the Irish hockey program. Condra s uncle is All-American forward Kirt Bjork ( 83) who played at Notre Dame from He scored 76 goals with 85 assists for 161 career points in 141 career games. He took All-America honors in 1983 when he had 29 goals and 34 assists for 63 points. Regan s uncle - Sean Regan - was a defenseman for the Irish from before finishing his career at the University of Minnesota. MORE FAMILY MATTERS: Freshman goaltender Brad Phillips also has a family connection to Notre Dame. His uncle is former Irish quarterback Terry Andrysiak who played at Notre Dame from 1985 to PUTTING ON THE FOIL: Notre Dame junior Christian Hanson (Venetia, Pa.) is the sixth player to play for the Irish whose father played in the National Hockey League. His father, Dave Hanson, played 10 years of professional hockey between and , including stints with the Detroit Red Wings and the Minnesota North Stars and the World Hockey Association s (WHA) Minnesota Fighting Saints and the New England Whalers. Fans might also be familiar with Dave Hanson, as one of the famed Hanson Brothers, made famous in the hockey movie - Slapshot. Hanson currently is the director of the Island Sports Center, home of Robert Morris University s hockey team, in suburban Pittsburgh. THE IRISH AND THE U.S. NATIONAL TEAM DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM: Notre Dame s current roster includes five players who have past experience with USA Hockey, as members of the National Team Development Program (NTDP). Since the program began, the Irish have had a total of 19 NTDP alums grace their roster. The current contingent includes junior goaltender Jordan Pearce, sophomore defenseman Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich.) and freshmen defensemen Ian Cole and Teddy Ruth plus goaltender Brad Phillips.
