The first period started at a fast pace and exhibited a high level of physical play. While not many quality scoring attempts occurred, both Conner Downing and Robby Jackson both succeeded in getting breakaway opportunities, but neither could get one past the Sharks goaltender. The first period looked like it would end in a scoreless tie, but the Sharks scored with one minute left. The Hawks almost matched the Sharks with a tip right in front of the goal with 5 seconds to go in the first period, but, nonetheless, the first period ended with the Hawks down 1-0. The Hawks started the second period strong. The Ward line got things going with an extended shift, keeping the Sharks penned in their defensive zone when Corey Gutierrez kept the puck in play on two separate clearing attempts. The Hawks would get on the board when Aidan Ward fed the puck to Malthe Helt, who put it in the back of the twine. The Downing line would generate a fair number of juicy rebounds, but could not convert. The Hawks killed off a suspect head contact penalty midway through the second. Shortly thereafter, Robby Jackson split San Jose s defenders, but was denied on the breakaway. On the next shift, however, Downing would score on an unassisted 1 on 2 opportunity, beating the Game 7 Recap (pg. 4) INSIDE THIS ISSUE Game 7: Blackhawks & Sharks Skate to 3-3 Tie 1 Game 8: Hawks Beat Tri-Valley Game 9: Blackhawks Down Thunder Game 10: Blackhawks Score Often to Beat Sharks Game 11: Blackhawks Beat Tri-Valley in CAHA Opener 3 Player Profile: Tyler Logan 3 Player Profile: Malthe Helt 4 Game 12: Hawks Rally in Third to Beat OC-2 5 Game 13: Blackhawks Complete CAHA Sweep 6 Player Profile: Geoffrey Grimm 6 Game 14: Tie Game Results from Penalty Kill Struggles 7 Hawks Exorcise Devils Early Lead on Way to 4-2 Victory October 2, 2010 For the fourth time in eight games, the Blackhawks faced off against the Blue Devils. The Hawks carried a 2-1 series lead into the game, but were still smarting from their only loss to the Blue Devils during the semi-finals of the Labor Day Tournament. The Blackhawks would strike first, as Connor Downing would score in the first off of an assist from Malthe Helt. However, the Hawks would give up two goals late in the first period to enter the second period down 2-1. Tyler Logan tied the match in the second period with a goal off an assist from Aiden Ward. Despite the fact that the Blackhawks racked-up 8 penalty minutes in the third period, the Hawks notched two more goals to take a three to one series lead. The first goal of the third came as James Lazette scored on the Hawks only power play of the game (assisted by Khodorenko and Helt). The final goal came on a Robby Jackson shorthanded blast, going nearside, top corner with a slapshot from just inside the blue line. Nicholas Checklenis picked up the win in a memorable performance, stopping 28 of 30 Blue Devil shots.
2 Page 2 Hawks Rain Down Goals Before Thunder Can Sound October 10, 2010 The Blackhawks faced-off against the Roseville Capital Thunder on a calm, Sunday morning in Fremont. However, the rain came pouring down on the Roseville goalie as the Hawks put up three unanswered goals on fifteen shots in the first period on their way to a 6-4 victory. Malthe Helt started the scoring 1:45 into the first period on an assist from Corey Semmelmayer. Helt notched another at the 8:31 mark, this time with an assist from Connor Downing. Downing capped off the first period scoring with another assist from Semmelmayer. The Blackhawks surrendered two power play goals in the second period, but kept a comfortable three goal lead after goals from Ward and Semmelmayer. Trevor Chapin finished off the scoring in the third, with assists from Gutierrez and Jackson. Corey Semmelmayer and Jared Lee each finished the game at plus 4. Nicholas Checklenis picked up his second consecutive victory for the Hawks, bringing his record to 3-1 for the season. The Blackhawks defense held the Capital Thunder in check, only allowing seventeen shots. Bantam AA Report Blackhawks Gut Sharks to Even the Season Series October 16, 2010 In the third game of this cross-town rivalry, the Santa Clara Blackhawks put up seven goals on thirty-five shots to even the series score at The beginning of the first period started off with the Sharks and Blackhawks trading goals. The Sharks got on the board quickly, scoring 38 seconds into the game. However, Robby Jackson would tie the game 59 seconds later, getting his first of six points on the night, on an assist from Matthew Ebertin. However, the Sharks would need only 23 seconds on the power play to regain the lead. The Blackhawks would tie the score midway through the first, as Robby Jackson got his second goal of the game, with an assist going to Geoffrey Grimm. Corey Semmelmayer would give the Blackhawks the lead for good when he scored with just 18 seconds remaining in the first period. Jackson and Helt were credited with the first and second assists. Robby Jackson got the hat trick, scoring on an unassisted tally, a little over two minutes into the second period. Connor Downing captured his own hat trick of sorts, landing his third penalty of the night towards the end of the second period. The Sharks brought the game to within 1 goal at the beginning of the third period, making the score 4-3 with fifteen minutes left to play. However, the Blackhawks poured on the shots and goals to leave the Sharks behind. Jackson scored again at 12:36 and Helt scored at 6:27 of the third period to give the Blackhawks a comfortable 6-3 lead. With less than four minutes to go, Corey Semmelmayer added another tally, with Helt picking up the assist to cap off his four point performance. Geoffrey Grimm finished the game with 21 saves. Jackson finished with six points, Helt finished with four, and Semmelmayer finished with three.
3 Blackhawks Beat Familiar Foe in CAHA Opener October 23, 2010 Despite travelling 300 plus miles to play in their first CAHA game of the season, the Blackhawks faced-off against a familiar foe the Tri-Valley Blue Devils. The Hawks were facing the Blue Devils for the fifth time in eleven games. Despite the familiarity, the Blackhawks took a commanding 4-1 series lead by beating the Blue Devils 4-2 in Valencia, California. The Blackhawks took the lead in the first period when David Adams kept the puck in the zone and hit Robby Jackson cutting towards the left side of the goal. Trevor Chapin circled behind Jackson and headed to the front of the net. Chapin, parking himself in front of the net, picked up the rebound off of the Blue Devils goalie and put it into the back of the net to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead. The Blackhawks shut-out bid was frustrated with one minute and change left in the second period. During an extended shift, the defensemen were caught deep in the Blue Devils zone. The Blackhawks center brought the puck up through the middle of the ice heading towards the blue line. When the attempt was made to circle back into the zone, the Blue Devils knocked the puck out of the zone, splitting the defense, and headed on a breakaway towards Geoffrey Grimm. Patrick Khodorenko drew a tripping penalty midway through the third period, but the Hawks were unable to capitalize on the power play. Shortly thereafter, the Hawks would give up two goals, only 35 seconds apart, to see their 2-1 lead evaporate and trail the Sharks with a little less than 4 minutes remaining in the game. With less than two minutes remaining, Calvin Borneman carried the play into the Sharks zone and Corey Semmelmayer put the puck top shelf to tie the game at three with 1:53 remaining in the third. Semmelmayer almost nabbed his second goal with ten seconds remaining as he tipped a shot from the point. When the buzzer sounded, however, the Blackhawks skated away with a 3-3 tie. Semmelmayer would lead the Blackhawks with a plus two rating, while Grimm got the tie, stopping 26 of 29 shots from the Sharks. 5 Game 11 Recap (cont.) crease, the Blue Devils forward was able to put the puck top shelf to cut the Hawks lead to 3-1 heading into the third period. Page 5 several occasions, the Blackhawks tested the flexibility of the OC goaltender, only to find that he was able to stretch from post-to-post and keep his left pad on the ice. Patrick Khodorenko extended the lead back to three goals when he netted a short-handed goal with an assist from Robby Jackson. The penalty kill was a perfect 4 for 4 and +1 for the game. The Blue Devils scored with 5:23 remaining in the third, but were unable to mount a comeback. Grimm stopped 28 of 30 shots on net for a save percentage of.933. Lazette and Adams led the Blackhawks in the plus/minus category, with 4 and 3 respectively. With CAHA game 1 in the bag, the Blackhawks were looking forward to playing a SoCal opponent. Four Third Period Goals Give Hawks Second CAHA Victory October 23, 2010 The Blackhawks second game of the CAHA regular season did not start as planned. The Hawks found themselves down 2-0 to OC-2 with less than fourteen minutes left in regulation. Nonetheless, the Blackhawks rallied with four goals in a twelve minute span to take their CAHA record to 2-0. The first period started off slow. The Blackhawks did not get many shots on net, and those that did make it to the OC goaltender were gobbled up. Shortly after matching roughing penalties, sparked by an apparent head contact/elbowing penalty that went un-called, OC notched the first goal of the game at 6:04 of the first. The second period remained quiet on the score sheet for the Blackhawks. While the Blackhawks dominated in time of possession and in the faceoff circle (culminating in a 61.8% faceoff advantage for the game), the Hawks could not get one in the net. On After OC scored again to start the third period, the Blackhawks started their comeback. The first chip in the OC armor came with 12:34 remaining in the third, when Trevor Chapin scored on an assist from Robby Jackson. After killing off an OC power play midway through the third, Patrick Khodorenko scored on an assist by David Adams with 4:31 left in the third. The Blackhawks continued to pressure the OC goalie, with defensemen Corey Gutierrez and James Lazette feeding in shots from the point, while Blackhawk forwards screened the goalie and tipped shots in an effort to complete the comeback. After an extended shift in their own zone, OC cleared the puck and attempted to get a line change. James Lazette fed the puck to Matthew Ebertin at the blue line. Ebertin entered the zone and drop-passed the puck to Robby Jackson at the left point. In the time that it took Jackson to elude one OC defender, Semmelmayer entered the zone and drove towards the net. Jackson through the puck towards the net, only to have it hit off of Semmelmayer s back. Ebertin picked the rebound off of Semmelmayer s back and backhanded a shot into the net with 1:39 left in regulation. Connor Downing capped off the Blackhawk comeback with an Game 12 Recap (pg. 6)
6 Game 12 Recap (cont.) empty net goal on an assist by Malthe Helt. The Blackhawks made the most of their scoring opportunities, scoring 4 goals on 22 shots. Jackson, Adams, Khodorenko and Lazette all finished plus three on the night. Geoffrey Grimm picked up his second win of the day and led the Blackhawks to a 2-0 start to the CAHA weekend. Next up for the Blackhawks would be another familiar foe: the San Jose Jr. Sharks. Hawks Beat Cross-Town Rivals to Complete CAHA Sweep October 24, 2010 Building upon their 7-3 victory over the Sharks and strong start to the CAHA season, the Blackhawks took advantage of strong goaltending and scoring opportunities to hand the Sharks their second loss in the CAHA season. Robby Jackson started the scoring in the first period with a goal off of an assist from Trevor Chapin. The Blackhawks killed off two first period penalties and Grimm stopped all twelve shots he faced to give the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead after the first period. The Sharks tied the game in the second period when they scored shortly after the Hawks had killed off their second penalty of the game. As time expired on the penalty, the Sharks shot the puck towards the net from the blue line. Grimm stopped two point-blank opportunities. Unfortunately, when the rebound from the second shot kicked out a few feet from the crease and onto the stick of a Sharks forward, Grimm was unable to get all of the third attempt and the puck trickled across the goal line to tie the game at one apiece. The Sharks comeback effort was stifled thirty seconds later as Patrick Khodorenko got the first of his two second period goals, this one coming as an unassisted tally at 12:47. After killing off another penalty, Khodorenko would strike again, scoring with 26 seconds left in the second period with assists Game 13 Recap (pg. 7) Profile: Geoffrey Grimm Why did you start playing hockey? 7 Game 13 Recap (cont.) from Aidan Ward and Robby Jackson. The late goal by the Blackhawks took the wind out of the sails of the San Jose team. While the Sharks put up 25 shots in the first two periods, they would only manage 3 shots in the third period. The fork was stuck into the Sharks at 13:21 of the third period. Corey Semmelmayer fed the puck to Matthew Ebertin who entered the zone down the left side. Semmelmayer drove hard to the net, drawing the Sharks defensemen towards the middle. Ebertin s first shot was blocked with the right pad. Ebertin heeled the rebound into the left pad. However, there would be no strike three, as Ebertin s third attempt found the back of the net to give the Blackhawks a three goal lead. Despite a parade of Blackhawks to the sin bin in the latter half of the third period, Geoffrey Grimm sealed the victory by stopping 27 out of 28 shots taken by the Sharks. Adams and Jackson would both finish the game at plus three. At the end of the third, the Blackhawks won their second straight contest against the Sharks and finished their first CAHA weekend with a perfect 3-0 record. Three Power Play Goals by Devils Lead to Tie Game October 31, 2010 Page 7 The scariest sight on this Halloween afternoon match between the Blackhawks and the Blue Devils was the opening of the Blackhawks penalty box door. Despite controlling much of the game, the Blackhawks could only muster a 4-4 tie against the Blue Devils as they surrendered three power play goals on the afternoon. The Blackhawks got on the board first, with Tyler Logan scoring early in the first period on an unassisted goal. The Blackhawks played solid defense, giving up only four shots in the first period. The Hawks took a 2-0 lead early in the second, as Robby Jackson scored at 13:46, with assists going to Corey Semmelmayer and Patrick Khodorenko. However, the two-goal lead was short-lived as the Blackhawks surrendered two power play goals in less than one minute. Surprisingly, the Blue Devils were able to score their first power play goal in 19 seconds and their second power play goal in 12 seconds. Undeterred, the Blackhawks would re-take the lead midway through the second period when Corey Semmelmayer scored with assists coming from Robby Jackson and Calvin Borneman. Shortly after an unsuccessful power play, Patrick Khodorenko gave the Hawks another two-goal lead when he scored with 2 seconds remaining in the second period. Robby Jackson picked up his third point of the afternoon and Corey Gutierrez picked up the secondary assist. The Blue Devils cut the lead to 1 early in the third period with their only even strength goal of the game. However, the Blackhawks could not stay out of the box and the penalty kill was bitten again with 55 seconds left in the match. The Blackhawks won several faceoffs inside the Blue Devils zone and rattled off 4 of their 13 shots in a 20 second span, but were unable to find the back of the net. Robby Jackson, Corey Gutierrez and David Adams would finish plus three for the afternoon.
