9 Preview As Bloomsburg University wrestling coach Dan Wirnsberger gets ready for the start of the season he is sure of just one thing, the season will be exciting for both the team and the fans. From there your guess will be as good as his as to how the season will play out. Wirnsberger s uncertainty comes from the fact that this year s team will feature 16 newcomers to the roster. Many of the those freshmen will be in the lineup on a regular basis facing one of the toughest schedules in recent memory. New to the Bloomsburg schedule this year are Big 10 team Ohio State and Indiana as well as perennial top-five Cornell. Our success on the mat will depend on how quickly we can develop our talented athletes into Division I caliber wrestlers, said Wirnsberger. We have numerous Pennsylvania State placewinners on our team this year so the present and future looks bright. This year s freshmen class was ranked 14 th by one national publication so Wirnsberger and his staff know they have plenty of talent to work with. I feel we have a good mix of experienced wrestlers to go along with our youth, said the second year coach. We have three returning EWL place-winners along with two transfers who will have to help us develop the freshmen. But no matter how talented the athlete, Wirnsberger knows they will need to step up and be ready to face a challenging schedule. I need for our team to mature and grow up quickly, Wirnsberger continued. By facing the type of schedule we will face this year, I am trying to show our wrestlers how hard they have to work in order to become an All-American or even a national champion. I am confident they can get it done. WEIGHT BY WEIGHT LOOK 125 Mike Collins and Brian Sellers will battle for the starting job. Collins moved into the starting lineup midway through the season after an injury forced Brock Hite to the sidelines. Justin Thomas and Lou Tirado will challenge for time as well at this weight. 133 It s a two way battle at this weight for the starting job between Justin Haupt and Bryan Hart. Haupt, was last year s starter, while Hart is a former 7

10 Preview PIAA state place-winners. The Huskies will be deep at this weight. 157 Red-shirt sophomore B.J. Mikeska will start for the Huskies. As a true freshman, Mikeska won 11 matches for the Huskies, but used his off year to get stronger. He will battle for mat time with Josh Loew, another PIAA state place-winner. 165 Ryan Garner, last year s starter, will once again get the nod at this weight. Garner was an EWL placewinner as well and posted 17 wins during the season. Adam Rupert will be his backup. 174 After losing an NCAA qualifier, Hunter Guenot, at this weight, freshman Nate Shirk will battle with Jim Bertulis and Jon Kokinda for mat time. B.J. Mikeska Returns to the Bloomsburg Lineup in Brad Forbes and Scott Heckman will see time at this weight. Forbes started last season at 141 pounds, but moved up to 149 pounds during the year. Heckman was a three-time PIAA state place-winner. Mark Piermattei adds depth, 149 The Huskies will use a true freshman, Tyler Williams, at this weight. Williams comes to Bloomsburg from Illinois where he was a four-time Illinois State place-winner, including State Champion as a senior. He was ranked third in the nation at 145 pounds after finishing third at the high school nationals. Will English and Chris Tate will add depth for the Huskies. 184 After missing last season with an injury, former NCAA qualifier Justin Johnson returns to the lineup. Two years ago Johnson was an EWL runnerup and goes into this season ranked 11 th in the country. Chad Hoare will backup Johnson. 197 Ryan Chulada will get the nod here to start the season. In the second half the year, Pat Bennett, a transfer from Morrisville, Jr. College in New York will battle for time. HWT Two freshmen, Dustin Swartz and Shawn Albert, will compete for mat time at this weight. Look for either one of them on the mat this season. 8
