1 W E L C O M E TO T H E W O M E N S B A S K E T B A L L C H A M P I O N S H I P The Women s Basketball Championship (WBC) is the premier competition for women in New Zealand. The WBC replaced the Women s Basketball League (WBL) in 2009 and is a joint venture between Basketball New Zealand and Associations. The WBC is played over three tournaments, with two tournaments covering round robin games and the last tournament is a playoff series. The WBC is in its eighth year with 11 teams making up the 2016 WBC. All but two teams have returned from last year, with the Junior Tall Ferns jumping at the chance to fill an available spot and gain some valuable experience against some of the best and most experienced players in NZ. The WBC takes on the same format this year as in 2015 with some games played outside the three tournament weekends in an attempt to promote the women s game and profile the players in their local associations. Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) has maintained the WBC as a National sport for 2016; therefore athletes must attend an education module, are subject to doping control and must apply for a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) before taking medication which contain any prohibited substances. This provides the opportunity to educate athletes with regard to anti-doping via the education module and resources. Tournament 1 March 4-6 ASB Centre, Tauranga Host: Tauranga City Basketball Association Tournament 2 April 1-3 Cowles Stadium, Nelson Host: Nelson Basketball Association Tournament 3 May Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua Host: Porirua Basketball Association 1

2 W E L C O M E F R O M B A S K E T B A L L N E W Z E A L A N D Welcome to the Women s Basketball Championships (WBC) played over three tournaments and several local derbies. The WBC is the ultimate domestic basketball competition for women in New Zealand and is becoming more important and competitive every year as young women utilise it to display their talent as they look to College opportunities in the United States, Australia and elsewhere. And as more College graduates return they will look for a New Zealand league to continue their love of the game. Our Tall Ferns will become a serious international force when more players come through the WBC, college basketball and semi-professional or professional clubs the change is already happening. Enjoy being part of it! Iain Potter Chief Executive W E L C O M E F R O M T A L L F E R N S C O A C H On behalf of the Tall Ferns program I want to wish each team the best of luck in the Women s Basketball Championship, The WBC creates a platform for New Zealand based athletes to display their talents on court and gain selection into the National Women s Program. The Tall Ferns embark on a very exciting year with a qualification series in Nantes, France in June. We will be facing the host nation and Cuba in our bid to make the quarter finals. Should we be successful in crossing over, we will play Turkey, Argentina or Cameroon. Should we win our quarter final we will progress automatically to the Olympics, if not we will play off for the final 5th spot. It is a real privilege to know that we have the opportunity to represent such a hard working basketball community and country. The Tall Ferns players and coaching staff look forward to all the challenges that are ahead. I look forward to having the chance to watch how the WBC unfolds in Kennedy Kereama Kennedy Kereama Tall Ferns Coach 2

3 W E L C O M E F R O M N E L S O N B A S K E T B A L L Nelson extends a warm basketball welcome to the teams from the 2016 Women s Basketball Championship. It has been a while since the top of the South hosted the WBC and we d like to hope you will have the chance to sample a little of what the district has to offer in your brief time here. Nelson s Saturday morning market in the centre of the city is a destination point for visitors while Richmond, five minutes to the south of the stadium, is a bustling retail hub. Alternatively, a walk down Tahunanui Beach and a coffee at any one of dozens of local outlets might be a great way to spend a spare hour this weekend. If more basketball is your passion, the Nelson Giants play their first game in the Trafalgar Centre since 2013 when they host Taranaki in the men s NBL at 7pm on Saturday. The Nelson Basketball Association is thrilled to have the opportunity to stage top level women s basketball after what has felt like too long away. We congratulate you all on your participation and wish you every success for this weekend and the playoffs in May. Warm regards Pete McNae General Manager Nelson Basketball Association 3
