4 FROM THE CHAIR FROM THE CHAIR 5 FROM THE CHAIR 2014 was a positive year for basketball in New Zealand and 2015 looks even brighter. FROM the Chief Executive 2014 saw a number of initiatives rolled out, starting with the Burger King 3x3 National Tour in 10 centres across New Zealand. The year started with the first Burger King 3x3 National Tour and a few months later we had our first ever national men s 3x3 team compete at a FIBA World Championship congratulations to this team for making history and competing so well, finishing 12th of the 24 nations that qualified. The drive to implement the All of Basketball Plan continued with the launch of Kiwi Hoops. This programme will help us provide an easy-to-access and flexible basketball format to young people nationally. Equally importantly, Kiwi Hoops will offer parents and teachers an easy way to become involved in our game as a coach and/or referee. The Tall Blacks made New Zealand proud with their stellar performances at the FIBA World Cup. There is no doubt now that they are a true and consistent international force. It was pleasing to have our first domestic series for many years with Korea playing a three test series as part of the Tall Blacks World Cup preparation. We were delighted to re-establish our relationship with Korea. The performances of the Tall Blacks during 2014 helped convince High Performance Sport New Zealand to allocate funding for their 2015 and 2016 campaigns. support. The Women s Basketball Championship (WBC) maintained its development with BBNZ looking to invest further as part of the development plan for the women s game. Thanks in main to the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), more than $200,000 was distributed to associations by BBNZ for a range of development strategies, including coaching, 3x3, and Kiwi Hoops. Financially we are delighted to report a surplus for the year. We had budgeted a deficit but greater than expected income through TAB sport betting, together with a new levy system and continued financial constraint, allowed us to post a Group surplus of $187,697 for the year. Sport New Zealand continued to positively support basketball and our potential in terms of participation. We thank them for helping us across a range of project areas. Thanks to the BBNZ staff for their work on multiple projects and activities. Thanks also to association staff and volunteers who support tournaments, events, project teams and their basketball communities. There remains much more that we can achieve as a sport but there is also much to celebrate. A new primary and intermediate programme was developed, with Kiwi Hoops launched towards the end of the year. This programme will become our key activity for children, with other initiatives planned for the age groups above. The calendar of tournaments was augmented with the new National Basketball Championship (NBC). Congratulations to Hutt Valley for being crowned inaugural national champions. This event will become a flagship for adult players that want to be part of the representative scene. The number of entrants at school premiership and association qualification events continued to rise, to the point that we experienced very real referee shortages. The Kiwi Hoops programme will help remedy this but in the short term we are investing in more support for referee development, including a full-time staff member in Auckland to help prepare for the World Masters Games in We modified our national age group team structure to align with FIBA World Championship events as we plan our move into the new Asia Oceania qualifying system from This sees us focusing on the under 17 and under 19 age groups with under 16 the entry point via participation in the Australian State Championships. Sponsorship remains a challenge. We were twice selected by large corporates as the sport of choice for sponsorship, only to miss out due to international factors well beyond our control. The positive is that this shows we are an attractive proposition to some. We moved to a smaller office late in the year and will achieve good savings from this move over the coming years. Feel free to visit the office when you are in Wellington. Iain Potter Chief Executive Basketball New Zealand (BBNZ) is investing more resource to help the Tall Ferns achieve what we know they are capable of, including an Olympic-focused programme and beyond. The National Basketball League (NBL) was again popular with good crowds at all games and a high level of regional media Karen Poutasi Chairperson

6 HIGHLIGHTS HIGHLIGHTS 7 HIGHLIGHTS The Tall Blacks hosted THREE TESTS against Korea, winning the series 2-1 A new National Talent Programme was launched. High Performance Sport New Zealand allocated funding to the 2015 and 2016 Tall Blacks campaigns. A youth 3x3 team competed at the Nanjing Youth Olympics FIBA WORLD CUP The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup was a huge success for the Tall Blacks. The Tall Blacks are one of only five teams to feature in the top 16 for the fourth consecutive time and finished a credible 15th. The first Burger King 3x3 National Tour took place in 10 centres. The Kiwi Hoops programme for primary and intermediate aged children was launched. The first senior New Zealand 3x3 team competed at a FIBA World Championship and finished a highly commendable 12th. The New Zealand U16 Boys finished third at the Australian State Championships - the highest finish by a New Zealand team at the Australian national tournament in over a decade. Steven Adams star continued to shine in his rookie year with NBA team Oklahoma City Thunder. Selected the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft (making him the first New Zealander to be selected in the first round of an NBA draft), Adams enjoyed considerable success in the season. The Junior Tall Blacks came agonisingly close to making history as the first New Zealand age group team to beat Australia and qualify for the World U19 Championships, but lost the game with a three-point buzzer beater from Australia was a remarkable year for Tai Wynyard. Making his Tall Black debut at the tender age of 16, Tai made history as the youngest ever Tall Black. He played for the Junior Tall Blacks who competed at the FIBA Oceania U19 Championship in Fiji and, on 26 January 2015, committed to the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball programme, with the aim of joining the team in The first National Basketball Championship (NBC) was held with the inaugural title won by Hutt Valley. BBNZ s official alumni, featuring former Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns players, coaches and managers, was established. Two alumni events were held with 140 attendees. Teenager Krystal Leger- Walker is a player to keep an eye on and will no doubt feature in the Tall Ferns squad for many years to come. In 2014 she made her debut for the Tall Ferns at the age of 16 and captained the Junior Tall Ferns at the FIBA Oceania U19 Championships. Walker was named Junior Player of the Year at the WBC. Tall Fern (2012) Erin Rooney continues to be a force to be reckoned with. Playing professionally for Arras Pay d Artois, Rooney is a regular starter and puts up great stats for one of the top French teams in the Euroleague. MORE THAN $200,000 was distributed to associations.

NATIONAL TEAMS 9 NATIONAL TEAMS TALL BLACKS With player depth at an all-time high, coach Nenad Vucinic had the tough task of selecting 2014 s Tall Blacks squad and admits it was the hardest in his eight years as head coach. There were a number of veterans available as well as some outstanding young talent. This combination created a good mixture of players putting their hand up for selection for the World Cup in Spain. Twenty-four players were invited to attend a two-day camp in Auckland for an opportunity to impress the coaching staff. Seventeen players were named at the conclusion of the camp to feature in a rare home series against South Korea. The series provided a good opportunity to confirm options and combinations prior to the squad being cut to 14 to travel to Asia and Europe before naming the final World Cup squad of 12. A highlight of the South Korea series was the emergence of 16-year-old Tai Wynyard, who made history as the youngest Tall Black ever. He played beyond his years, picking up six points and five boards for his nine minutes on court. The Tall Blacks dominated in the first of three games, lost the second game by one point (76-75), and took out the series in the final game.

10 NATIONAL TEAMS NATIONAL TEAMS 11 THE ROAD TO SPAIN 2014 FIBA World Cup Following the South Korea series the focus shifted to the road to Spain. The 14 man squad to tour Korea, China and Lithuania included veteran Tall Blacks with previous World Cup experience, including Kirk Penney (2002, 06, 10), Captain Mika Vukona (2006, 10), Tom Abercrombie (2010), BJ Anthony (2010), Lindsay Tait (2010) and Casey Frank (2010). The Webster brothers (Tai and Corey) both got the nod, along with Tai Wynyard, Isaac Fotu, Rob Loe, Everard Bartlett, Jarrod Kenney and Nick Horvath. First stop on the Tall Blacks overseas tour was Seoul for the two game series against South Korea. The Kiwis lost in the first game but were victorious in game two with a Kirk Penney buzzer beating three-pointer to win Head Coach Nenad Vucinic continued to rotate his roster at the four nations tournament (Shikoku Basketball Classic). The men in black proved too good for the competition in China, winning all six games to win the series. Kirk Penney showed his international class with solid performances and being lead points scorer in all but one game. Corey Webster was also impressive and not far behind. In Lithuania, the Tall Blacks suffered narrow defeats against Slovenia and Lithuania and could not contain Greece. In Serbia, the Tall Blacks took world number 11 Serbia to the wire in a loss and took a thrilling win in the last of two games. The win was a huge confidence booster for the team going on to Spain. The Tall Blacks had a heart breaking three-point loss in their opening game at the FIBA World Cup, losing to Turkey They suffered their second consecutive defeat, beaten by Dominican Republic in a game that perhaps reflected their disappointment at losing to Turkey. Against a stacked USA team (who were hot favourites to win another World Cup) the Tall Blacks went down the smallest winning margin for USA in the tournament. In a must-win game against Ukraine the Tall Blacks kept their hopes alive with a strong win that ensured a win over Finland in their final pool game would give them a chance to progress to the knock out stages. Isaac Fotu had his best with a double/double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Despite overwhelming crowd support for the Fins the Tall Blacks came out on top, winning The Tall Blacks eventually bowed out of the World Cup in the Round of 16, beaten by Lithuania. Down by double digits early on, they clawed their way back but Lithuania did enough to take the win, The 2014 World Cup campaign was a successful one, evident in the narrow losses against number four-ranked Lithuania and 2010 runners up Turkey. In addition, the Tall Blacks were one of only five teams to feature in the top 16 for the fourth consecutive time. At the end of the campaign Vucinic, who has been part of the national team for 25 years as a player, assistant coach and then head coach, announced he was stepping down at the end of the year. Tall Blacks Manager Claire Dallison also stepped down on completion of her contract. Both Vucinic and Dallison have sacrificed a lot and dedicated a huge amount of time and energy to basketball in New Zealand. They will be missed.

12 NATIONAL TEAMS NATIONAL TEAMS 13 TALL FERNS The Tall Ferns welcomed eight debutants into the team in 2014, with only four players Antonia Edmondson, Samara Gallaher, Kate Fielding and Jessica Bygate having previously worn the silver fern at senior level. Edmondson, the most experienced player in the team, was named captain with Fielding vice-captain. Edmondson understands what is required to compete at international level and was in the best position to mentor and direct the team through the challenges they faced. The team featured the inclusion of dual international Jess Tuki (netball and basketball) and teenager Krystal Leger- Walker, a player that shows poise and skill well beyond her 16 years. The Tall Ferns were undersized at the Four Nations tournament in China, playing against quality opposition in China, Slovenia and a WNBA invitational team. The senior players led from the front and the newcomers stepped up, with Josephine Stockhill displaying some individual brilliance. The Tall Ferns fought hard but suffered tough losses against China and the WNBA invitational team, but were far from disgraced in playing these basketball powerhouses. The young team pushed Slovenia in both games, with heart breaking losses in the end. The 2014 tour provided an excellent opportunity for many of the newcomers to measure themselves against some of the best in the world.

In memory of Amie Russell 14 HIGHLIGHTS NATIONAL TEAMS NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS TEAMS Amie was a member of the 2014 NZ U16 Girls team and tragically passed away in /03/ /01/ NATIONAL JUNIOR TEAMS It is an exciting time for basketball in New Zealand as there is a plethora of young talent coming up through the ranks. Tall Blacks Izayah Mauriohooho-Le afa and Tai Wynyard lead the way along with Tall Ferns Krystal Leger-Walker, Dru Toleafa and Maia Wilson. Their experience gained while playing for the national senior men s and women s sides helped their NZ U19 teams (Junior Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns) at the FIBA Oceania U19 Championships in Fiji, where both teams finished comfortably on top of their respective pools. Both then faced Australia in the finals. It took a three on the final buzzer from Australia to break the hearts of the Junior Tall Blacks, who had fought back from a 10-point deficit. The Junior Tall Ferns fought hard but were not able to contain Australia, going on to claim the silver medal. The NZ U16 Boys played very well at the Australian State Championships, narrowly missing out on the final but managing to pick up the bronze medal by beating New South Wales Metro. This was the highest finish of a New Zealand team at the Australian national tournament in over a decade. Meanwhile, the NZ U16 Girls finished on a high, winning their 9th/10th playoff. Arguably one of the strongest NZ U18 Boys sides assembled for the Australian State Championships in April. Even with big men Sam Timmins and Tai Wynyard unavailable the boys did an outstanding job to finish fifth out of 14, while the NZ U18 Girls finished their campaign in eighth place. Both NZ U20 sides had a hard time at the Australian State Championships against tough opposition. Highlights included a narrow win against Tasmania U20 Men, and beating ACT U20 Men by 19 points. The women enjoyed a win against Tasmania, The 2014 season ended on a high for Matthew Freeman who was invited to the Basketball Without Boarders Global Camp, the first of its kind organised by the international governing body FIBA. NATIONAL 3x3 TEAMS The Kiwi 3 3 men travelled to the 2014 FIBA 3 3 World Championships for the first time. The team went into the biennial tournament knowing they faced a mammoth task, with their total delegation outnumbered in many cases by the support staff alone from other teams. Patrich Bolstad, Rory Fannon, Johnny Fesolai and Karl Noyer were selected for the team. All players took part in the inaugural Burger King 3x3 National Tour and gained world-ranking points, which made them eligible for selection - under FIBA rules two of each nation s roster must be ranked inside the top 10 3x3 players in that country. The tournament was a test of endurance and fitness, with all matches played in the space of four days. The Kiwis performed well, winning three of their six games, suffering close losses, and finishing 12th out of 24. Coach Anthony Corban put together a competitive team for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. Isaac Davidson, Izayah Mauriohooho Le afa, Ray Penny and Sam Timmins did New Zealand proud, playing with a lot of heart to make it to the round of 16 where they suffered a narrow loss to Poland, 14-16, to not advance into the quarterfinals. They came 11th out of 20 teams. The future looks bright for 3x3 in New Zealand with a large number of talented young players and the game gaining more exposure with the help of the Burger King 3x3 National Tour and 3x3 Secondary Schools National Slam.

16 HIGHLIGHTS National Leagues and Championship Tournaments National Leagues and Championship Tournaments 17 BARTERCARD NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE The 2014 Bartercard National Basketball League (NBL) season was arguably the most competitive season ever, with only three wins separating fourth to eighth position. National Leagues and Championship Tournaments The Pacific Jewellers Saints (Saints) had a particularly big year when, following their 2013 semi-final loss, they finished the season winning their eighth franchise title, defeating the IMS Payroll Hawks (Hawks) Australian basketball great Shane Heal made his NBL coaching season debut with the Saints. Heal inspired his troops to peak at the right time, with convincing semi-final and final wins each by more than double-digit margins. Tall Black star, Corey Webster, was unstoppable for the Saints and for his efforts was named the league s Most Valuable Player. Webster finished second in the league in scoring (25.8 ppg) and won both guard awards. It was a tough finals loss for the Hawks. Former Tall Black coach, Tab Baldwin, motivated his side to a franchise best regular season of 15 wins, and was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time. On the road to the final the Hawks beat the defending champions Zerofees Southland Sharks (Sharks) in the semi-final, helped by a dominant performance from former Tall Black Paora Winitana. Winitana scored 24 points in the win. It was a difficult year for the Sharks, who lost four key players during the regular season. But sometimes good luck follows bad luck, as they were able to recruit former Finals Most Valuable Player Puke Lendon, New Zealand Breakers player Tai Wesley and player/coach Paul Henare, who came out of retirement to get Southland back into the playoffs. The Fico Finance Giants (Giants) had another great season, making the playoffs for the 21st time. It was a special year for the Giants as they celebrated their player Phill Jones becoming the all-time leader for NBL games played, with 361 games saw the return of the Canterbury Rams (Rams), who last played in the NBL in Although the Rams were unable to make the playoffs they showed they are a team to look out for in the future, boasting players such as former Tall Black Jeremy Kench and Rookie of the Year Richie Edwards, who was one of their leading scorers.

18 National Leagues and Championship Tournaments National Leagues and Championship Tournaments 19 WOMEN S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The 2014 Women s Basketball Championship (WBC) saw 10 teams competing, including the New Zealand U19 Women s team (as part of their preparation for the FIBA Oceania qualifying tournament). Many former and current Tall Ferns took the court in 2014, meaning the competition showcased some of New Zealand s top players, including Commonwealth Games silver medallist Charmian Mellars, Tall Ferns captain Natalie Taylor, and dual international Suzie Bates. There was no shortage of emerging talent as Tall Ferns guard Jordan Hunter and forwards Samara Gallaher and Penina Davidson hit the court again. The talented Purcell sisters made history as the first four siblings (Charmian, Natalie, Hailey and Kalani Purcell) to play representative basketball together in the same team the Auckland Counties Manukau Lady Hawks (Lady Hawks). This achievement was made even more special when niece Idaho joined the team. All four sisters have also played internationally, with Charmian, Natalie and Kalani representing New Zealand while Hailey played for Samoa. Going into the third and final play-off tournament the Lady Hawks were the leading offensive team, averaging 63 points per game and, with the starting five boasting several international players, were favourites to progress to the final. The Wizards upset the Lady Hawks in the first semifinal, out rebounding them and shooting 44% from the floor and 50% from long range (compared to the Lady Hawks disappointing 29%). Despite missing out on the final, Kalani Purcell from the Lady Hawks picked up WBC. In the second semi-final between North Harbour Breeze (Breeze) and the Waitakere Lady Rangers (Lady Rangers) it was a similar affair, with the Breeze securing victory The game was close in the late stages of the third quarter at but when the Breeze got on an 11-1 run it was difficult for the Lady Rangers to come back. Breeze went on to take out the 2014 WBC with a stunning come-from-behind victory over the Wizards, The Wizards were quick out of the gate and were leading 15-2, but the Breeze managed to close the margin to a four-point ball game. Breeze led by two points going into the final quarter, eventually taking the game out with a six point advantage. NATIONAL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP The National Basketball Championship (NBC) was introduced to the tournaments calendar in Unlike the Bartercard NBL, which is franchise based, the NBC is a search for the best association-based team. It has residence-based eligibility and provides an opportunity for players to represent their association effectively their hometown. In the future it is hoped the NBC will become something of a stepping stone, as players who are currently in the NBL mix with those who have hopes of one day joining them. Eight teams signed up for the inaugural tournament, which was supported by BBNZ and tournament sponsor SAS Sport. The only South Island team, Southland, did well and reached the final but were dominated by Hutt Valley, who took out the inaugural title The final was a clash between master and apprentice, with 35-year-old Kevin Braswell running the Southland offence and 17-year-old Izayah Mauriohooho Le afa leading the Hutt Valley side. However, this was far more than a two man show. The first half was a three-point blow-out with Hutt Valley Nico Buckrell leading the charge. Every time the men from the South came back the margin extended in Hutt Valley s favour, going into the second half Leading at the final break, the fourth quarter was a chance for Hutt Valley to enjoy the moment, with Coach George Le afa sharing the minutes across his roster. Southland never stopped trying but the shots simply did not go in. The tournament All Star Five was named during the postgame presentations with Jayden Bezzant (Tauranga), Nico Buckrell (Hutt Valley), Brook Ruscoe (Porirua), Kevin Braswell (Southland) and Izayah Mauriohooho-Le afa (Hutt Valley) in a guard-dominated lineup. Mauriohooho-Le afa capped a great tournament when named Tournament MVP. Sharp shooting Waikato Wizards (Wizards) had the competition s best shooting percentage from behind the three-point arc (36.7%) saw a very high calibre of players take the court, with many selected from the WBC to make their debut for the Tall Ferns in the four nations tournament in China.

20 National Leagues and Championship Tournaments National Leagues and Championship Tournaments 21 National Championship Tournaments Two additional tournaments were included in the 2014 tournaments calendar - the NBC (see previous page) and the Secondary Schools 3x3 National Slam. 3x3 The 3x3 Slam was sanctioned by the Secondary School Sports Council and was jointly hosted by BBNZ and Auckland Basketball Services Ltd during the secondary schools summer tournament week. Following on from the Burger King 3x3 National Basketball Tour, the Secondary Schools 3x3 National Slam was introduced to target the secondary school market. Forty-one teams competed, with Fraser High School taking out the boys title and New Plymouth Girls High reigning supreme in the girls competition. Secondary Schools National Championships The A and AA Secondary Schools National Championships continue to be a season highlight. Buller High School went one better than their runner-up finish in 2013, defeating Aquinas in the A girls final, The win came on the back of a superb offensive effort led by Ashley Stuart (27 points) and sister Nicole (14). Richard Rodger (29) lead the way for Kavanagh, defeating defending champions St Kevin s, 64-56, to take home the A boys title. Pre-game favourites Wellington Girls were beaten by New Plymouth Girls, 64-46, in the AA girls final. Tournament MVP Kayla Manuirirangi and Connie Poletti were the star performers in a great all-round team effort. The AA boys title went to Otago Boys High School, who stopped Westlake Boys three-peat attempt by winning a close game, Sam Timmins (Otago Boys) dominated at the post with a double/double of 26 points and 23 rebounds. Age Group AND WhEELChair Championships Emerging talent was on display at the U23 National Championships, including Derone Raukawa (Manawatu Jets), Ethan Rusbatch (Canterbury Rams), Brooke Blair (North Harbour Breeze) and Laykin Paenga (former NZ age group representative). North Harbour (women) and Counties Manukau (men) were victors in their finals. The Wheelchair National Championships were won by Waikato Senior (division one) and Auckland Blue (division two). Most Valuable Player went to Sheldon Larsen from the Waikato Senior team and Brendan Mes (Waitakto Senior), Mark Sullivan, Panchpreet Dhillon, and Chris Hanely (Auckland Wheelbreakers) were named in the tournament team. Auckland Counties Manukau won two national championship titles (U15 girls and U17 boys) and North Harbour continue to prove their women s teams are strong, also wining two (U17 and U23). Waitakere West (U13 boys), Canterbury Country (U13 girls), Palmerston North (U15 boys), Rotorua (U19 men), Canterbury Metro (U19 women) and Counties Manukau (U23 men) all won one championship each. NATIONAL ACTIVITIES

22 NATIONAL ACTIVITIES NATIONAL ACTIVITIES 23 ALUMNI AWARDS One of the highlights in 2014 was the launch of the BBNZ s Alumni, featuring former Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns players, coaches and management. In 2014 BBNZ reinstated its annual awards, with the presentation of three trophies at an awards function prior to the NBL final. The awards will become an annual fixture on the basketball calendar as our best athletes and those who have contributed to the game have their moment in the spotlight. In July BBNZ, in collaboration with the Basketball Foundation, hosted two alumni events at the Tall Blacks vs Korea games in Wellington and Auckland. Afterwards the 140 guests were invited to watch the game and socialise. The events were a huge success and BBNZ had an overwhelmingly positive response from those that heard about the new initiative and those that attended, with requests for more events. It also provided an opportunity to update information on the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns database, which lists more than 500 members will be another exciting year with plans to host more events and opportunities to reconnect with basketball friends and grow the BBNZ alumni will see a more comprehensive list of awards presented as well as plans to introduce Hall of Fame and Legends categories. All awards are awarded for the previous year s achievements. Stella Beck McGloughlin Trophy for Female Junior Player of the Year Stella is a Tall Fern and plays for the Saint Mary Gaels women s basketball team in California. She was named of the WBC 2013, where her Hutt Valley side won the title for the first time. Stella has represented New Zealand at U16, U17 and U19 levels, earned All-Conference honours three times, and won two national high school championships as a member of her Hutt Valley High side. Jack Salt Ambassador Trophy for Male Junior Player of the Year Jack made his Tall Blacks debut in 2013 while still at high school. He plays for the Cavaliers at the University of Virginia, USA. Jack helped Westlake Boys High School capture back-to-back New Zealand national high school championships in 2012 and 2013, earning All-Tournament honours both seasons. Aik Ho Keith Mair TROPHY FOR Coach of the Year Aik has an impressive coaching resume. In the 2013 national age group championships he completed a rare coaching double coaching Waitakere West Auckland U19 women s and the U17 girls team to championship wins in their respective tournaments. In the same year, Aik was assistant Tall Ferns Coach and Head Coach for the national U17 girls team. Aik is also coach of the James Blond Super City Rangers in the NBL.

24 NATIONAL ACTIVITIES NATIONAL ACTIVITIES 25 BURGER KING 3X3 NATIONAL BASKETBALL TOUR The first annual Burger King 3x3 National Basketball Tour took place in 2014 in 10 centres around New Zealand. A total of 974 players and 272 teams across eight categories (male and female U14, U16, U18 and Open grades) participated. KIWI HOOPS Kiwi Hoops was launched at the end of 2014 as the official national junior basketball programme. It uses basketball activities and games to provide fun and enjoyable learning experiences, encouraging participation by young people aged 5 to 13 years. Burger King committed to a four year sponsorship of the tour, acknowledging the increasing popularity of 3x3. In its first year, the tour focused on introducing the new 3x3 format, encouraging participation, and raising New Zealand s world 3x3 rankings. The tour sparked interest from associations keen to host future events and athletes wanting to support local events. Lunchtime Slam Dunk competitions gave the events real street flavour and were a highlight in many centres. The event in Waitakere was a great success with 43 teams registered. Tall Blacks Lindsay Tait and Jack Salt were among the judges for the Slam Dunk competition and a number of NBL players played in the tournament. The finale at Aotea Square attracted 45 teams. Highlights of the day included a celebrity lunchtime game. Comedian and former NBL player Guy Williams was the MC and provided many laughs throughout the day. The Slam Dunk competition was highly competitive and former Tall Black and NBL star Hayden Allan was on the judges panel. The next Burger King 3x3 National Basketball Tour hopes to increase numbers of participants and to grow interest in the sport. There is little doubt 2015 will be bigger and better, as 3x3 continues to grow in popularity. With the current profile and popularity of the game it is the perfect opportunity to grow participation. In order to achieve this growth the sport needs a quality national programme that is flexible enough to meet the needs of players of different ages and stages of development and in different settings. Kiwi Hoops is designed to be used in any setting including schools, basketball clubs, associations, and at after school and holiday programmes. It can be used for different programme lengths (from four weeks to full term or season) and can be delivered at any time of the year, indoors or outdoors. Kiwi Hoops makes it easier for parents, teachers and other volunteers to get involved in the game. The four stages of the programme, which align to the ages/school years of the participants, provide easy-to-use session plans and game formats for all levels. The focus of Kiwi Hoops is on fun, enjoyment and participation for players, enabling them to experience success right from the start. It provides young players with a strong foundation for their basketball future, which will help ensure they stay in the game.

26 NATIONAL ACTIVITIES NATIONAL ACTIVITIES 27 REFEREE AND COACH DEVELOPMENT BBNZ has redesigned the referee and coach development pathways with a new addition at the beginner level within the Kiwi Hoops programme. NATIONAL TALENT PROGRAMME A new National Talent Programme (NTP) was introduced in Through the NTP talented basketball athletes move along a continuum as they progress in their basketball development. Kiwi Hoops Coach and Kiwi Hoops Referee are new short courses designed for anyone new to basketball and participants include parents, teachers, students and players. The courses deliver an introduction to coaching and refereeing and provide participants with great resources and the confidence to get involved. More than 70 trainers from basketball associations around the country have been trained in the Kiwi Hoops programme. Their role is to deliver the coach and referee courses and to support coaches and referees in delivering great experiences for young people. The focus going into 2015 is on delivering Kiwi Hoops into schools and associations and building coach and referee numbers. Along with Kiwi Hoops the new community stages were also introduced for referees and coaches. In 2015 resources will be developed for the performance levels of referee and coach development. At the elite end of refereeing BBNZ is pleased to have supported the addition of two new FIBA qualified referees in Ryan Jones and Mathew Bathurst who gained their FIBA status in December. The programme aims to account for all factors of an individual s development that contribute to their experience as a competitive athlete, from their early representative pathway at an association level to ensuring world class performances at an international level. The programme aims to: assist and accelerate the development of an elite player base so that, by 2020, New Zealand is ranked in the world s top 10 countries across all age groups provide talented athletes with tailored, measured and effective programmes that enable them to reach their potential identify proven techniques and scientific resources that will assist BBNZ in developing world class athletes NTP camps were also introduced in The focus of the camp is to introduce participants to the preparation, performance and evaluation required at a national level. Aspiring coaches, referees and support staff also have the opportunity to be involved. BBNZ s network of coaches (including national junior team, regional and association coaches) identify and select players for the programme based on their performance and potential demonstrated at camps, tournaments and during development activities. Independent Auditor s Report To the Members of Basketball New Zealand Incorporated and Group. Report on the financial statements We have audited the financial statements of Basketball New Zealand Incorporated and Group on pages 1 to 8, which comprise the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2014, and the statement of financial performance, and statement of changes in equity for the year then ended, and a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information. Board Members responsibilities The board members are responsible for the preparation of financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand and for such internal control as the board members determine is necessary to enable the preparation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. Auditor s responsibilities Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audit. We conducted our audit in accordance with International Standards on Auditing (New Zealand). Those standards require that we comply with ethical requirements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement. An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditor s judgement, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the entity s preparation of financial statements that present fairly the matters to which they relate in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates, as well as evaluating the presentation of the financial statements. We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion. Other than in our capacity as auditor we have no relationship with, or interests in Basketball New Zealand Incorporated and Group. Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements on pages 1 to 8 present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Basketball New Zealand Incorporated and Group as at 31 December 2014, and its financial performance, for the year then ended in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand.
