4 The San Diego State women's basketball team enters year three of the Jim Tomey era returning seven letterwinners and welcoming four impact freshmen into the fold. The squad will once again be youthful with just one senior and nine underclassmen, but the 24-5 Aztecs return four of their top five scorers and both of their all-conference honorees Rewind - Year two of the Jim Tomey era saw the Aztecs start off strong only to struggle mid-season, but then end with a touch of optimism about the future, tallying an 8-2 record and a 3-11 mark in the Mountain West Conference. SDSU won three of its first four outings, coasting to easy victories over Nevada (67-52) and Cal State Fullerton (73-5), before erasing a ninepoint first half deficit to beat UC Irvine, 51-4, on the road. A loss at Cal State Northridge snapped the win streak and the Aztecs had several chances to improve their record with near misses against cross-town rival USD, SMU and Oral Roberts. The Aztecs held off Pac-1 Conference member Washington State in Pullman (63-56) and then closed out their non-conference schedule in dominating fashion against Texas Pan-American, limiting the Lady Broncs to just 15, second-half points. In league play, SDSU earned its eighth and ninth straight victories over Air Force and for the second consecutive year, pulled off an upset of Colorado State at home. Despite the seventh-place MWC finish, the Aztecs showed significant signs of improvement in the second half of the conference schedule. SDSU boasted halftime leads over both UNLV and MWC regular season co-champ Utah and had a one-point advantage in the final seconds of a three-point loss to New Mexico, which beat the Aztecs by 34 points in the two sides earlier meeting. For the first time in four years, SDSU opened the conference tournament with an opponent other than New Mexico, but was still unable to advance, ending its season with a loss to tourney runner-up Utah. Two players, freshmen Michelle Elliott (third team) and Courtney Fritz (honorable mention), earned all-conference honors. Back Again - Eight players from last year s roster, including three starters, will be back on The Mesa in Headlining the group will be sophomore duo Michelle Elliott and Courtney Fritz, who both averaged in double-figures as true freshmen. Elliott was eighth in the league and first among freshmen with her 12.4 ppg. She also scored 1 or more points in 21 of her 27 outings and was first on the team in assists (51) and second in three-pointers (38). The only Aztec to play and start in all 28 games a year ago, Fritz knocked down 63 three-pointers to rank fourth in Aztec single-season history. The Oregon native led the team in scoring 11 times and capped her year by reaching double-figures in five of the final seven contests, making 17 three-pointers during that span. The team s third returning starter is junior Veronica Shaw. Shaw played in 25 games, starting 12 all in MWC regular season or tournament play. Junior Michelle Strawberry also saw starting time in 1 games, while senior Lindsey Casey was one of the first Aztecs off the bench in Other returnees include sophomore forward Erin Jackson, who played in 25 games, and guard Jessica Huettl, who saw a promising freshman campaign come to an end just 11 games into the season due to injury. Colorado native Jordie Smith is also back and should see her first collegiate action after using her red-shirt year Preseason Notes Noting the Newcomers - With seven newcomers in 22-3 and eight a year ago, SDSU s four newbies in 24-5 might not seem like a big deal, except when you figure that they make up a quarter of this year s roster. All four Aztec newcomers are freshmen, but will be counted on to play well beyond their years. The quartet includes a true point guard, a talented wing player, a proven forward with experience playing at the highest prep level, and a 6-3 center, who adds more than just height to head coach Jim Tomey s third squad. Geographically Challenged Again - For the second straight year, the SDSU coaching staff traveled far and wide to make-up its 24 recruiting class. This year's 12-player roster includes players from 1 states/provinces with the most coming from California and Texas. Other states/provinces represented include: Alberta (Canada), Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin. The Three Ball - This year s SDSU women s basketball team could once again be poised to find success beyond the arc. A year ago, the Aztecs set three team records in that category for most three-pointers made with 13 (prev. 124 in 21-2), most three-pointers attempted with 418 (prev. 389 in ) and most three-point attempts in a game with 25 (prev. 24). Key Points For The Aztecs In 24-5 Offense - The Aztecs return two of its top three and four of its top five scorers from last year s team including sophomores Michelle Elliott (12.4 ppg.) and Courtney Fritz (1. ppg.), who both averaged in double-figure scoring... this season s returnees accounted for all but five of the team s school record 13 three-pointers, including 63 by Fritz, which ranks fourth in Aztec season history... newcomers Ashley Cheesman, Kate Eveland and Marin McCue will all be threats from beyond the arc... Eveland will be counted on to take over much of the point guard duties, along with Huettl, giving Fritz more time to play at her more natural shooting guard spot... scoring is again the main focus this season, after the team averaged just 53.7 points per outing in Defense - The biggest cause for concern for this year s Aztec squad may be on the boards, as none of the seven returning letterwinners averaged more than three rebounds a game in SDSU must get bigger contributions from the team s lone senior, forward Lindsey Casey, and sophomore Erin Jackson, in the front court... centers Jordie Smith and Whitney Hollison will add height to the line-up at 6-2 and 6-3, respectively, but will both see their first year of collegiate action... junior Veronica Shaw is one of the conference s better defensive players with her 79 career steals. The Schedule: San Diego State will look for the home-court advantage in 24-5, as the Aztecs play eight of their 12 non-conference games at Cox Arena... along with the seven MWC home games, SDSU will have 15 dates at home for the second time in the last four years... the Aztecs open their year on an opponent s court (at USD - Nov. 23) for the first time since the 2-1 campaign, when they traveled to Montana... the Nov. 23 opener is the program s latest since , when the team played at Texas on Nov the Aztecs were 3-2 against non-conference schools which it also faced a year ago... SDSU plays a trio of first-time opponents in Cal State Stanislaus, Canisius and Eastern Washington. 4

5 Jim Tomey Head Coach Third Season - Michigan, 1981 The Jim Tomey File Birthdate: March 3, 1956 Hometown: Detroit, Mich. College: Bachelor of Science in Education University of Michigan, 1981; Master of Arts in Education Azusa Pacific, 1994 Family: Tomey and his wife of 24 years, Annemieke, have three children, Lauren (13), Madeleine (11) and Suzanna (9). They reside in Scripps Ranch. Head Coaching Background: San Diego State (Head Coach - Women) SDSU Total (.39) University of San Diego High School (Head Coach - Boys) USDHS Totals (.749) OVERALL TOTAL (.678) The 24-5 season marks the third year of the Jim Tomey era at San Diego State and some of the challenges of building a program into a annual conference title contender still remain. But Tomey has never been one to shy away from a challenge. In fact, the 2-year San Diego resident has built his career by embracing them. I see this as a great opportunity, Tomey said. To become a Division I head coach in a city that I ve called home for 2 years and to do it at a great university like San Diego State is a huge honor. But it will continue to take a lot of work to build a program here. It is something that I ve been through before and have enjoyed the challenge. In his sophomore campaign, SDSU experienced its fair share of growing pains with just three letterwinners returning and eight newcomers. The team started off strong by winning three of its first four contests. A victory over Pac-1 Conference member Washington State and a dominating performance against Texas Pan-American highlighted the Aztecs remaining non-conference schedule. The MWC season saw the Aztecs upset Colorado State for the second straight year, while a wire-to-wire battle with eventual conference champion New Mexico in the home finale showed signs of the team s progress. In his first year as the Aztecs head coach, Tomey directed an SDSU squad, which included seven freshmen, to a 9-18 overall record. Two players earned all-conference honors and senior Jamey Cox became the school s all-time career three-point leader. SDSU also boasted the league s leader in rebounds and double-doubles. When San Diego State was searching for a head coach to restore the winning tradition of Aztec women's basketball, the University set out to secure an individual with a track record as both a proven winner and a program builder. Mission accomplished. California high school coaching legend and SDSU men's assistant coach Tomey was named the Aztecs' seventh women's basketball coach on April 9, 22. With a resume that included a winning percentage of 75 percent as a head coach, and tenure as an assistant on the men's side at SDSU that helped usher in one of college basketball's greatest turnarounds in recent history, Tomey was a perfect fit for the position. Before accepting the women s head coaching job at SDSU, Tomey took a leap of faith in leaving a secure winning program at University of San Diego High School (USDHS) that appeared to be on autopilot as it cruised to CIF title after CIF title. Tomey left to join Steve Fisher's staff with the SDSU men in September of Many pondered why a man who had built a struggling boys basketball team into a state powerhouse would trade it all in to try and help resurrect a collegiate program that had posted just one winning season in the previous 14 years. But that is the nature of Tomey, a man who thrives on beating the odds and one who has been a winner on both the high school and college levels. In his first season with the Aztecs, the men s team finished with a disappointing 5-23 overall record. Just a year later, the team almost tripled its number of wins, pulling to an even The improvements didn t stop there either, as San Diego State, with Tomey s help, pulled off the ultimate turnaround in Not only did the team finish with a record, the fifth-seeded Aztecs claimed their first Mountain West Conference Tournament championship and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, its first trip to the NCAAs since An educator by trade, Tomey got his start in coaching at nearby Clairemont High School before spending three seasons as an assistant at USDHS. In , he was handed the reins of the program, and what ensued over the next decade can only be described as incredible. Taking over a team that had won a combined 14 games over the previous two seasons, Tomey put an indelible stamp on the Dons' boys basketball program in his inaugural season, guiding the team to an 18-7 record, the San Diego Section CIF title game and the state playoffs. Over the next nine years, USDHS would evolve into one of California's premier prep programs under Tomey as the Dons would post seven 2-win seasons en route to seven San Diego Section CIF titles, three state final fours and the 1998 state championship. Overall, Tomey's tenure at USDHS would see the Dons register a cumulative record of (.749), proving to be one of the most successful runs in the history of San Diego County boys basketball. Tomey s program at Uni also produced a number of NCAA Division I student-athletes, including All-American and current Los Angeles Laker, Luke Walton. Individually, Tomey was named the 1998 San Diego County Coach of the Year and in November of 21 was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions as a Coaching Legend. In addition to his work at USDHS, where he taught social sciences, physical education and U.S. history, and SDSU, Tomey is a popular speaker at clinics and camps. Tomey has been a camp instructor at the Nike All-American Camp, Michael Jordan Flight School, Magic Johnson and Byron Scott camps. A native of Detroit, Tomey played college basketball at Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich., from He finished work on his degree at the University of Michigan, earning a bachelor's of science degree in education in In 1994, he completed work on a master's in education at Azusa Pacific University. 5

6 Fentriss Winn Assistant Coach First Season - Art Inst. Of Calif, 22 A local coaching legend, Fentriss Winn joined the Aztec staff this past June. He serves as the team's recruiting coordinator and SDSU head coach Jim Tomey's top assistant. "Coach Winn adds a local flavor to our staff," Tomey said. "He brings a wealth of experience and a winning attitude. He will be great with our players and pivotal in our recruiting. I look forward to building this program with him at my side." Winn compiled a record in nine seasons ( ) as the head girls basketball coach at The Bishop's School in La Jolla, Calif. During his tenure, Bishop's won the 21 state title, claimed six straight CIF section championships and made five consecutive regional final appearances. More recently, Winn was the head coach at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo, Calif., from In two seasons, he directed the Lady Gauchos to a record and mentored two all-state and six all-conference performers. His first campaign at Saddleback, Winn was named the Orange Empire Conference Coach of the Year after his squad went 29-3 overall and won the league title with a perfect 14- mark. A year later, Saddleback was the conference runner-up and again qualified for the Southern California Regional Tournament, finishing with a 19-9 record. Winn also coached the Bishop's boys basketball team from , leading the Knights to a pair of section titles. He was the founder and coach of the Future Stars Basketball Club, an AAU-based program for boys and girls, from The last two years, Winn served a similar role with the AAUbased Top Ten Basketball club for girls. The Los Angeles native played collegiate basketball at Mira Costa College in 1979 and 1981 and owns a bachelor's degree from the Art Institute of California in digital arts (22). Winn has four daughters, Brianna, Mallorie, Alonalanai and Ariel. Brianna (St. Mary's College) and Mallorie (University of Pittsburgh) both play NCAA Division I college basketball. Krista Poehler Assistant Coach First Season - UC San Diego, 1998 A former standout at nearby UC San Diego, Krista Poehler begins her first season as an assistant coach at San Diego State. Poehler stays within the Mountain West Conference after spending the last two seasons at Colorado State. She helped coach the Rams to two straight WNIT appearances, including a trip to the semifinals in 23, and a combined record. "Coach Poehler has impressed me with her great organizational skills and attention to detail," SDSU head coach Jim Tomey said. "She has coached in our league for the past two years and has experience working with every phase of a basketball program." At CSU, Poehler worked with the team's post players and coordinated team travel and film exchange. She also was heavily involved with recruiting, scouting, team academics and served as the program's liaison with the booster program and business office. Prior to her stay in Fort Collins, she was an associate in broadcasting for the WNBA, where she helped promote players to the media and assisted with special projects, including the WNBA's celebration of the anniversary of Title IX. The Pasadena, Calif., native also coordinated WNBA player travel and media photo shoots at the 22 NBA All-Star Game. Poehler served as a women's basketball program assistant at the University of Oregon from , while completing her MBA with a concentration in sports marketing. With the Ducks, she assisted in individual post drills and coordinated the team's video exchange and equipment. As a player, Poehler starred at UCSD from , where she led the Tritons to four consecutive NCAA tournament berths, including a program best 23-4 record as a senior. She was a two-time team co-captain and garnered team co-mvp honors in Poehler, 28, began her coaching career at her alma mater in , working with the team's guards and assisting with recruiting and scouting. She is a 1998 graduate of UCSD with a bachelor's degree in communications and visual arts/media. Dustin Finley Assistant Coach First Season - UC Davis, 22 Dustin Finley enters his third season with the Aztecs and his first as an assistant coach. In his first two years on The Mesa, Finley served as the team's head manager. As head manager, he was in charge of the team's video editing and assisted with travel, equipment and camps. He also helped with practice set-up and oversaw the team s student managers. "Coach Finley has been with me for our first two seasons and has a great understanding of our structure and overall philosophy," SDSU Head Coach Tomey said. "He brings a great energy and passion for the game to our staff." Finley, 24, is a 22 graduate of UC Davis with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. He worked for five years ( ) at the University of Arizona's men's basketball camp under legendary coach Lute Olson. The Fairfield, Calif., native graduated from Justin-Siena High School in Napa, Calif., in 1997, where he played soccer and ran track. Finley continued his soccer career at Napa Valley College from , earning all-bay Valley Conference honors twice as the team's captain. 6
