Nearly half (43.1%) of VCU s scoring in its first 16 games has come from freshmen (624 pts). Rams have 7 true freshmen on roster. #LetsGoVCU (160/160) SETTING THE SCENE After picking up a victory over Saint Joseph s (No. 10 RPI) on Jan. 12, VCU suffered a tough three-point setback against Fordham on Wednesday, which marked its second loss in three games. The Rams face UMass today for the second time in three weeks. THE FURY EFFECT VCU set three school records in a thrashing of the Minutewomen in its A-10 opener on Jan. 2, including overall points (112), points in a half (62) and 3-point FG (14). The Rams 58-point win was also their second largest in program history. The 112 points were the fourth most against a conference opponent in A-10 history, and the most since Penn State scored 115 against Duquesne on Jan. 29, It s also the most points by any team in the nation this year against a league foe. The Black and Gold, which led UMass at halftime and allowed just 10 points through the first 15 minutes, had a season-high six players score in double figures. OPENING STATEMENT With a win against UMass, the Rams would improve to 16-3, which would keep pace with their best start in school history. Those 16 victories would also be more than 28 different VCU programs have won during an entire season. The Rams, who already have four more wins than all of last year (seven more than this point last season), won a program-record 13 straight games from Nov. 17-Jan. 4 (tied for the nation s fourthlongest active winning streak at the time) en route to its best start in school history at The previous record nine-game winning streak stood for more than 19 years. VCU, which started 6-0 at home for the first time since , also posted a perfect 7-0 mark during the month of December for only the second time in program history. Eleven of VCU s 15 wins have come by double digits. The Rams opened the year with seven straight double-digit victories, a feat that has occurred just one other time in program history ( ). In addition, this year s squad is the only team in school history to post six double-digit road wins (five straight) in their first eight games. It s also the first time VCU has ever won five straight road games by 10 points or more (Nov. 21-Dec. 7). AMONG THE NATION S BEST According to the latest NCAA stats released on Friday, VCU ranked second in the nation with 13.0 steals per game. The Rams also ranked among the top 25 in turnover margin (8th), assists/game (23rd) and scoring (24th). Freshman Keira Robinson ranked 12th nationally averaging 6.7 assists per game, which is also the second highest mark among all freshmen in the country. Senior Robyn Parks, the A-10 s leading scorer at 22.7 ppg, ranked 12th in the nation in scoring and fourth in total points (408). Parks, who has scored at least 22 points in 11 of her last 13 outings, is averaging 24.1 ppg since Nov. 27. A FURY OUS START VCU s offense is averaging 80.4 points (2nd in A-10) behind its new-look Fury brand this season, compared to just 62.4 ppg during the same stretch last year. VCU has scored 70 or more points in all but two games, including seven outings with 85-plus, three with 90-plus and one with 100-plus. Despite her high-octane, offensive-minded Fury brand, second-year Head Coach Marlene Stollings still likes her squad to play solid and active defense. That s been evident so far this season as the Rams lead the A-10 in steals (13.0 spg), turnover margin (+7.1), turnovers forced (22.7), scoring margin (+13.2) and 3-point field goals (7.7/gm). VCU also ranks second in the league in assists (17.3 apg). DIALING LONG DISTANCE The Rams have drained 7.7 three-pointers per game so far in , which is tied for the most in the A-10. Last year, the Rams reached double digit treys three times. VCU, which has already accomplished that feat four times this season (14 vs. UMass, 11 at Ohio State & UMBC; 10 at UNCG), has hit a shot from beyond the arc in 32 straight and 47 of its 48 games under Stollings. VCU set the program s 3-point record for the second straight season with 14 against UMass on Jan. 2. Last year, the Rams knocked down a then-program best 13 vs. UMKC. Freshman Isis Thorpe ranks third in the A-10 with 2.6 threes per game. She knocked down a career-high seven at UMBC on Dec. 7, the most by any VCU player this season. Sophomore Jessica Pellechio hit 77, the third-most in VCU single-season history, as a rookie last year. She also finished the season ranked 15th in the NCAA with 3.0 per game. Eight different Rams have drained a three this year, including five with 12 or more. THE MAIN ATTRACTION Senior Robyn Parks, who leads the A-10 in scoring (22.7 ppg) and ranks second in rebounding (9.6 rpg), also led the league in scoring a year ago (18.7 ppg). She has recorded at least 11 points in 46 straight outings. On Dec. 1 at Wagner, Parks became the 20th player in school history to score 1,000 points, which she accomplished in her 100th career game. After a pair of nondescript freshman and sophomore seasons in which she scored a total of 309 points in her first 63 games, Parks has accumulated a whopping 969 points (20.2 ppg) in her last 48 contests alone. She averaged 3.0 ppg as a rookie, 6.6 ppg as a sophomore, an A-10 best 18.7 ppg last season, and is currently contributing 22.7 ppg this year. LENDING A HELPING HAND VCU ranks second in the A-10 with 17.3 assists per game. Rookie point guard Keira Robinson leads the Rams and ranks second in the league with 6.7 apg, which is tied for the second highest mark of any freshman in the country. She is averaging 8.3 assists in her last nine games, including a career-high 12 vs. Cleveland St. Robinson also posted career-high scoring efforts in three straight games from Nov , including a 25-point, fiveassist effort at UNCG on Nov. 27. That same game, Robinson and classmate Isis Thorpe scored a combined 47 points, while shooting 18-of-25 from the field and 9-of-12 from long range against the Spartans. 3 YOUTH MOVEMENT With seven true freshmen on its roster, VCU returned the least amount of experience of any Atlantic 10 team this season. Five of those seven rookies have already earned a spot in the starting lineup, three of which have started six or more games (Keira Robinson, Isis Thorpe, Camille Calhoun). A COMFORTABLE MARGIN VCU s average margin of victory is 18.1 points. Eleven of the Rams 15 wins have been decided by double-digits, including a program record five straight on the road from 11/21-12/7. The Black & Gold has won half of its last 12 games by 20 points or more. BALANCING ACT The Rams have used balanced scoring this season as at least four players have scored in double figures in nine games. Nine different players have scored 10 or more points in a game this season, including six with three or more double figure scoring games. A season-high six Rams scored in double figures vs. UMass and five vs. Saint Joseph s. FEELING CHARITABLE VCU tied a school record with 45 free throw attempts at Wagner on Dec. 1. The Rams, who went 33-of-45 from the charity stripe against the Seahawks, have shot 70 percent or better from the charity stripe in seven of their last 11 outings. The Rams are 11-0 when attempting more free throws. The Black & Gold also went 20-for-23 against Manhattan. WEEKLY HONORS Freshman Keira Robinson earned her league-leading third A-10 Rookie of the Week honor last Monday after averaging 14.5 points, 8.5 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 steals on the week. Senior Robyn Parks has earned league Player of the Week honors four times this year (most in A-10). VCU swept the A-10 s awards for the third time this season on Dec. 23 as Parks earned Player of the Week recognition and freshman Keira Robinson was recognized as Rookie of the Week. The Rams also swept the awards in back-to-back weeks Nov. 25 and Dec. 2. Parks earned both Player of the Week honors during that stretch, while Robinson (Nov. 25) and freshman Isis Thorpe (Dec. 2) were named the league s Rookie of the Week in consecutive weeks. RELENTLESS ON THE RECRUITING TRAIL Head Coach Marlene Stollings 2013 recruiting class was tabbed the 38th-best in the nation, tops among all Atlantic 10 Conference squads, and third-highest among non-bcs schools. One of those players freshman Camille Calhoun (Bowie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) is listed as a four-star recruit by ESPN. Stollings continued to strengthen her first recruiting class in the spring, adding Auburn transfer guard Chadarryl Clay (3.7 ppg, 1.7 apg, 12.3 mpg in 32 games as freshman). Clay, also an ESPN four-star recruit out of high school, will have three years of eligibility beginning in I don t think we ve seen a team all year be so aggressive at us, especially in transition. Everybody on the floor comes at you hard. -ODU Coach Karen Barefoot following the Rams victory over the Lady Monarchs on Dec. 30 >> FEAR THE FURY Unlike VCU Men s Basketball s Havoc style of play, which places an emphasis on pressure defense, the women s program introduced its Fury brand during the offseason, revealing its intention to feature a high scoring, offensive style of play under second-year Head Coach Marlene Stollings. The Rams are already ahead of where they were at this point last year in several statistical categories - both offensive and defensive - and are making noticable progress establishing their new brand. 9 MARLENE STOLLINGS HEAD COACH TENURE: Second season at VCU HOMETOWN: Beaver, Ohio ALMA MATER: Ohio 98 RECORD AT VCU: (second season) CAREER RECORD: (third season) THE BASICS Stollings, who enters her second season at the helm of VCU s Women s Basketball program in , boasts extensive experience as both a player and a coach at the Division I level, having also spent time as head coach at Winthrop with stops as an assistant at Ole Miss, Saint Louis, Wright State, New Mexico State and Jacksonville. She played collegiately at Ohio University where her name remains in the school s record books with 10 three-point baskets and 41 points scored in a single game. Under her guidance, the Rams qualified for the Atlantic 10 Tournament during her first season in despite returning just 20 percent of their offense (fewest in A-10) and 31 percent of their minutes played (second fewest in A-10). Stollings has long been recognized as an outstanding national recruiter. Her first VCU recruiting class was ranked 38th in the nation, tops in the A-10 and third-highest among non-bcs schools. As an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Ole Miss, she signed arguably the school s best class in nearly 30 years in 2010, while her final two classes with the Rebels ranked as the 39th and 42nd best in the nation. During her first year as a collegiate head coach in , Stollings was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year after guiding Winthrop to more than 40 team and individual school records, including just the program s second winning season (18-13) in 26 years. Stollings has consistently been recognized as one of the nation s top coaches, earning invitations to the prestigious Villa 7 Consortium, and most recently the esteemed Center for Coaching Excellence at Columbia University. Considered one of the finest scorers to ever play in the basketball rich state of Ohio, Stollings still holds the state s high school scoring record (both boys and girls) with 3,514 points, 857 more points than NBA All-Star LeBron James scored during his Ohio prep career. While playing professionally in Europe, Stollings coached a men s club team to an undefeated season. Marlene Stollings arrival on June 5, 2012 marked a new chapter for the VCU Women s Basketball program, including the installation of a fun, offensive style of play. Fans saw flashes of her signature Fury brand during her first season with the Rams in despite inheriting a squad that returned just 20 percent of its offense (fewest in the Atlantic 10) and 31 percent of its minutes played (second fewest in A-10). Perhaps her most impressive work with the Rams came in the form of junior Robyn Parks, who was VCU s leading returning scorer at just 6.6 points per game. Parks flourished under Stollings new brand in as she went on to lead the Atlantic 10 in scoring (18.7 ppg), finished second in steals (2.7 spg) and ranked among the league s top 10 in both rebounding (7.9 rpg) and field goal percentage (.470) en route to a second team all-conference citation. Meanwhile, freshman Jessica Pellechio earned a spot on the A-10 s all-rookie squad after leading all freshmen in scoring (11.3). The sharp shooter also led the league and ranked 15th nationally with 3.0 three-pointers per game, while her 77 treys were the third most in VCU single-season history. As a team, the Rams were dangerous beyond the arc during Stollings first year at the helm, knocking down a school record 13 triples against UMKC, while hitting double-digit 3-pointers on three different occasions. In addition, Pellechio tied the A-10 s single-game record with nine against the Kangaroos. Although Stollings shares an offensive-minded approach to the game, her squad proved it could be stingy on defense as well, as the Rams led the league and ranked 23rd nationally with more than 11 steals per game last season better than three more per game than the previous year. VCU also forced 18.1 turnovers per outing, while causing 20 or more miscues 11 different times. The Rams allowed fewer than 60 points on 13 occasions and held an opponent to under 30-percent shooting six times. During her introductory press conference, Stollings admitted that recruiting will become the lifeblood of her program. Her June arrival put her staff slightly behind on the recruiting trail, but that didn t seem to matter as just five months later she and her new staff had rapidly assembled a six-player recruiting class, which was tabbed the 38th-best in the nation, tops among all A-10 squads, and third-highest among non-bcs programs by national recruiting service Blue Star Basketball. One of those players Camille Calhoun was listed as a four-star recruit by ESPN. The Rams joined nationally-ranked Dayton as one of just two A-10 schools to boast an ESPN Top 100 recruit. Stollings, the 2012 Big South Conference Coach of the Year, made a splash in her first year as a collegiate head coach in , guiding Winthrop University to more than 40 team and individual school records, including just the program s second winning season (18-13) in 26 years. Prior to joining the Eagles, Stollings served as an assistant at Southeastern Conference power Ole Miss from with the final season as the Rebels associate head coach. Her more than decade-long coaching and recruiting career also includes stops in the Atlantic 10, Sun Belt and Horizon League. Stollings has consistently been recognized as one of the nation s top coaches, earning invitations to the prestigious Villa 7 Consortium, and most recently the esteemed Center for Coaching Excellence at Columbia University. In her first year as a head coach, Stollings wasted little time reviving a Winthrop program that had posted a record in three seasons prior to her arrival. Her 18 wins in her only season with the Eagles were the most by any first-year head coach in program history and tied for the second most in Winthrop s 26-year NCAA Division I era. Stollings also guided Winthrop to just its third winning conference record in school history, including a program-best 12 Big South victories. Her squad tied school records for home wins (10), road wins (8) and conference road wins (5), and became the first Eagles team ever to record four-game win streaks twice in a season en route to sweeping a school record four Big South opponents. Guard development has perhaps been one of Stollings best coaching attributes, and it wasn t long before her up-tempo style of offense took shape at Winthrop. The Eagles set single-season school records for points per game (69.6), 3-point field goals made (236) and 80-point contests (9), while knocking down a single-game record 17

10 triples, one shy of the Big South Conference mark. Winthrop also drained 7.6 threes per game, which ranked 10th in the NCAA, while Stollings first recruit, junior transfer Diana Choibekova, led the nation with 3.9 treys per outing. Choibekova s 121 threes, the most in Big South single-season history, were five away from the NCAA s single-season mark. Meanwhile, sophomore Dequesha McClanahan became the first player in program history to be named Big South Player of the Year after finishing second in the country in assists (7.2 apg) and 11th in scoring (21.1 ppg). Prior to her arrival in Rock Hill, S.C., Stollings spent four seasons at Ole Miss, where she was responsible for overall offense as well as oversight of recruiting, scouting and coordination of individual guard development. Recognized as an outstanding national recruiter, she signed arguably the best Ole Miss recruiting class in nearly 30 years in Mississippi native Valencia McFarland, who ranked as the No. 14 point guard in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz, highlighted a class that also included highly touted players from Ohio, Tennessee and Arkansas. Stollings final two classes at Ole Miss ranked 39th (2011) and 42nd (2010) in the nation by ESPN HoopGurlz. Stollings consistently molded Ole Miss guards into one of the top corps in the country during each of her four seasons. The Rebels offense ranked among the top-five in the SEC in seven offensive categories in 2011 and eight in Under Stollings watchful eye, Bianca Thomas, a 2010 first-round draft pick of the WNBA s Los Angeles Sparks, ranked 10th in the NCAA and first in the SEC in scoring (20.9 ppg) as a senior en route to an All-SEC first-team selection for the second consecutive season. Thomas also became the first Ole Miss player since 1986 to lead the SEC in scoring, while setting a new school single-season record with 100 three-pointers. Stollings boasts extensive experience as both a player and a coach at the Division I level, having also spent time as an assistant at Saint Louis, Wright State, New Mexico State and Jacksonville. A native of Beaver, Ohio, Stollings enjoyed a decorated collegiate and prep career in her home state. She earned First Team All-Mid-American Conference honors at Ohio University after finishing eighth in the nation and first in the league in scoring at 22.9 points per game her senior year. She served as team captain for the Bobcats and earned Kodak All-America honorable mention honors in Stollings remains in the Ohio record books with 10 three-point baskets and 41 points scored in a single game. In the classroom, she earned the Ohio University Alumni Scholar Athlete citation and Dean s List honors, and graduated with both a B.B.A. in marketing and a B.S. in sport industry from Ohio University in Stollings began her collegiate playing career at Ohio State University, where she was a two-time scholar athlete for the Buckeyes. Following her collegiate career, Stollings played one season professionally for Club ABB Baden in Switzerland. She was later invited to the WNBA s Utah Starzz training camp in 1999, and also played for the NWBL Mobile Majesty. While playing professionally in Europe, Stollings coached a men s club team to an undefeated season. Considered one of the finest scorers to ever play in the basketball rich state of Ohio, Stollings finished her prep career at Eastern as the leading scorer in Ohio high school history (both boys and girls) with 3,514 points, a record that still stands (LeBron James scored 2,657). The 1993 Ohio Miss Basketball was also presented a resolution by both the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives for her academic and athletic achievement. Stollings was a two-time Division III High School Player of the Year and four-time conference Player of the Year. She earned Kodak All-America honors her senior season. Her name currently appears more than 30 times in the Ohio High School Athletic Association record books. In her honor, Feb. 19 was declared Marlene Stollings Day in Pike County, Ohio.
