2 Portland Names Pritchard Interim Head Coach Kevin Pritchard, who has served as Director of Player Personnel since August, was named interim head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers on March 2. He replaced Maurice Cheeks, who was relieved of his coaching duties the same day. We made this change in order to evaluate the entire roster and to put the franchise in the best position as we had towards the draft and free agency, said Trail Blazers General Manager John Nash. We appreciate all of Maurice s efforts during this difficult time and wish him well in the future. Pritchard becomes the eleventh head coach in the franchise s 35 seasons and the second to serve in an interim position. Before joining the Trail Blazers organization last summer, the 37-year-old Pritchard served for a year and a half as a scout with the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to that, he was with the Kansas City Knights of the American Basketball Association. There he served as the team s general manager, head coach and director of player personnel. In , he led the Knights to the ABA championship. He was selected in the second round (34th pick overall) in the 1990 NBA Draft by Golden State. In addition to the Warriors, he also played for Boston, Philadelphia, Miami and Washington in the NBA. Pritchard also played in Spain, Italy, Germany and in the Continental Basketball Association. Pritchard was a standout basketball player at the University of Kansas where he was an All-Big 8 selection his senior year and was a starter in 129 of his 139 collegiate games over four seasons. In addition to all-conference honors, he was a three-time All-Big 8 Academic Team selection. Averaging 12.2 points during his career with the Jayhawks, he ranks among the school s all-time top 10 in scoring, assists, steals and three-pointers. Cheeks became the Trail Blazers 10th head coach on June 27, 2001, after serving seven seasons as an assistant at Philadelphia, four of those under Larry Brown. His 162 victories ranks fourth on the Trail Blazers alltime head coaching chart. In three-plus seasons with Portland, Cheeks led the club to the playoffs twice. His team finished and took a red-hot Dallas Mavericks team to seven games in the Western Conference playoffs first round. TRAIL BLAZERS COACHING RECORDS REGULAR SEASON PLAYOFFS Yrs. G W L Pct. Sacramento 112, Portland Tuesday, March 22, ARCO Arena Joel Przybilla, Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Damon Stoudamire were again terrific for the Trail Blazers but the end result Tuesday in ARCO Arena was same as it has been for six games---another notch in the loss column---as the Sacramento Kings went nearly wire-to-wire to get a decision... Przbyilla, for the second time in two visits to ARCO, owned the backboards by gathering in 21 rebounds, one shy of the career-high 22 he recorded on the Kings court on Jan Przybilla also had 13 points and a career-high 8 blocked shots for his 12th double-double in his last 30 games... Abdur- Rahim matched his season high with 27 points, his eighth 20-plus outing in the last 11 games... Stoudamire tallied 25 points and grabbed a seasonhigh 11 rebounds... The Kings took the lead after the third possession of the game and opened an 11-point lead by the end of the first quarter... The Blazers got to with four points, 59-55, on Shareef s long jumper early in the third quarter but that precipitated an 11-3 Kings run and the margin never got below 10 after that... Turnovers that have plagued was again a big factor as the Blazers lost for the 13th time in 14 games... The home team scored 25 points off 21 Portland miscues while giving the ball up only four times---an all-time Blazers opponent low---costing the Kings just four points... The Trail Blazers defense swated away a season-high 14 enemy shots and out rebounded the Kings, Kenny Thomas (24 points) and Peja Stojakovic (23) led the Kings as the Blazers extended their season s longest road losing streak to eight in a row T Final Att. The loss, Portland s fifth straight and its 11th in its last 12 games, locked the Blazers into their first losing season since and only the tenth in the franchise s 35-year history... The Blazers are with 17 games remaining... Shareef Abdur- Rahim turned in still another solid game for Portland with game-highs of 23 points and 14 rebounds (his 10th double-double of the season), but the team shot just 34 percent from the field... The Blazers made just 30 percent of their shots in the first quarter while the Clips were connecting at a 62 percent rate... Portland fell behind at the end of the first quarter and after forging a tie with 3:27 left on Damon Stoudamire s three-pointer, never got closer than three points the rest of the way and were looking at a double-digit deficit much of the second half... Darius Miles added 20 points and Sebastian Telfair had 12 for the only other Blazers besides Abdur-Rahim in double figures... Elton Brand and Corey Maggette each had 22 points to lead the Clippers, who shot 48 percent for the game... Portland won the rebounding battle, T Final Att. 4 64. Orlando 97, Portland Saturday, March 19, The Rose Garden Rookie forward Viktor Khryapa made 9 of his 10 shots from the floor and scored a career high 21 points in only his 13th NBA game but it wasn t enough as the Trail Blazers succumbed to the Orlando Magic, 97-94, in the Rose Garden... It was Portland s fourth straight loss and its ninth in the last 10 games... The setback snapped an 11-game Blazers win streak in the series and gave the Magic their first series victory since March 20, Portland nursed a lead into the second half and kept it close in the third quarter, going into the final 12 minutes behind by only three, But again, as in several of the losses in the past two weeks, the Blazers couldn t get over the hump down the stretch... Turnovers and rebounding at the defensive end of the floor proved again to be Portland problems... The Blazers turned the ball over 19 times, allowing 18 Magic points, compared with 10 Orlando miscues for 12 Portland points... The Magic, who had nine more field goals, put up 30 more shots in the game (98 to 68), thanks in part to 19 offensive rebounds... The Magic scored 17 second chance points to the Blazers 7... Sebastian Telfair scored 16 points and Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Damon Stoudamire with 13 apiece were the only other Blazers in double-digit scoring...grant Hill led five Magic players in double numbers with 23 points... FGs 3 Pts FTs O D Reb A PF St TO Bl Pts Orlando Orlando Portland ,395 Portland Dallas 98, Portland Thursday, March 17, American Airlines Center, Dallas The Blazers took the lead midway through the first quarter, built an 11 point cushion in the second stanza, were still in command, 78-73, with 7:48 remaining in the game and had the scored knotted at 90 with 2:17 left... But they couldn t hold on and in the end went down, 98-94, to the Dallas Mavericks... It was Portland s sixth straight road loss and its ninth setback in the last 10 games and dropped the Blazers 17 games under The Blazers, plagued with injuries and illness, had only four front court players available for duty but still battled the Mavs on even terms for nearly 48 minutes... Shareef Abdur-Rahim continued his steady play with 20 points, playing all but two minutes of the game... Damon Stoudamire, coming off a strained hamstring injury three games ago, also had 20 points, including five three-pointers, and Joel Przybilla posted his 11th double-double---16 points and 13 rebounds before fouling out late in the game... The Blazers had as many field goals as the winners (35) and three more triples and they made all but two of 20 free throws... Dallas made seven more from the line on 17 more attempts... Again, turnovers figured big in the loss... Portland surrendered 20 Maverick points off 18 turnovers while Dallas lost just 8 points on 10 miscues... Portland lost the rebound battle, T Final Att. The 31 point margin was the biggest ever by Houston over the Blazers as the Rockets swept the season series for the first time since , the first year the two teams played each other... It was the Blazers fifth straight road loss, their eighth in their last nine games overall and their 12th in the last Among the few bright spots for Portland was the continued steady play of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who scored 20 points before fouling out midway through the fourth stanza... Joel Przybilla put in 18 points and had a team-high 8 rebounds and Travis Outlaw had another good game off the bench with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks... But as a team, Portland shot just 35% from the field while allowing their opponents to connect at a 50.7% clip... The Sonics came in with the best record in the West and had the Blazers on the ropes, 74-64, with 10 minutes remaining in the contest... But the Trail Blazers, led by Shareef Abdur-Rahim s season-high 25 points, and the inspired play of Darius Miles, Ruben Patterson and Nick Van Exel, stormed back to outscore the Sonics, the rest of the way... Miles had a big game, getting 20 points on 10-of-14 shooting... Patterson, who again was a major factor at both ends of the floor, scored seven points, came up with three steals and had a big hand in holding Sonics ace Ray Allen to just five field goals and a quiet 21 points... Van Exel, directing the offense in the fourth quarter, tallied 14 points... The Blazers free throw shooting (27 of 32 for the game) was particularly big in the final period when they converted 19 of 21 at the line, including 9 of 9 by Abdur-Rahim and 9 of 10 by Zach Randolph, who finished with 19 points... A seven-minute drought without a field goal in the fourth quarter and sloppy ball handling---19 turnovers in the game leading to 21 Sonic points---were major contributors to the Blazers losing their fifth road game... Five other Blazers finished in double figures... Rashard Lewis (20 points) and Vladimir Radmanovic (20 points, 10 rebounds, five steals) led Seattle... Przybilla, who now has 105 blocks, has rejected 80 in his last 26 games, and is averaging 1.71 a contest, 11th highest in the league... And, of course, the Trail Blazers as a team rank second in the NBA in rejections. ONE SEASON LEADERS G Blocks Avg. 1. Bill Walton Sam Bowie Mychal Thompson Clifford Robinson Theo Ratliff Bill Walton Theo Ratliff YOUTH MOVEMENT... When Coach Kevin Pritchard turned in his starting lineup card for the March 12 game against the Grizzlies, he well could have established an NBA first... Three of the five starters all came to the NBA directly out of high school----darius Miles, Travis Outlaw and Sebastian Telfair... Miles, out of East St. Louis High School, is in his fifth NBA season... He was drafted in 1st round (3rd pick overall) by the LA Clippers in the 2000 NBA Draft... Portland selected Travis Outlaw from Starkville, Mississippi High School in the 1st round (23rd overall) of the 2003 Draft then took Sebastian Telfair in the 1st round (13th overall) of the draft last summer... Average age of Portland s five starters last Saturday, including its senior citizen Shareef Abdur-Rahim (in his ninth year in the league) years. 10,000 & 1, Damon Stoudamire surpassed the 10,000 point and 1,000 three point field goal career plateaus in the same game Feb. 1 in Los Angeles... The Portland native, in his 10th NBA season and his eighth as a Trail Blazer, got his 10,000 point on a running jumper with 7:36 left in the first quarter of the Laker game... He finished with a game-high 25 points... Damon passed the 1,000 level for triples in the third quarter when he made his third of the game... It was a long one with 6:56 left in the period. IN THE RECORD BOOK.... Any doubt that Blazers co-captain Damon Stoudamire had overcome early season shooting problems were blown away Jan. 14 in New Orleans... The 5-10 guard almost single-handedly gave his injury-depleted team a chance at winning with the biggest game of his career, and for that matter, the biggest single effort in the Trail Blazers 35-year history... The 54 points he poured through in 43 minutes of action not only was a personal and all-time Blazers best but came within a point of being the NBA s high for the season... In that game, he also established new personal record and tied the team mark for field goals in a game (20); tied the Blazers record for points in a half (30); set a new career high and tied the club record for three-pointers in a game (8), and set a new team and personal high for three-point attempts with 16. MILESTONES... Damon Stoudamire played 40 minutes in the Mar. 17 game at Dallas, moving him ahead of Geoff Petrie in ninth place on the Blazers all-time minutes played chart... After Tuesday at Sacramento, Damon s total minutes as a Trail Blazer are 16,979...Petrie logged 16,787 minutes while playing in 446 games over six seasons... Ahead of Stoudamire in eighth place on the all-time list is Buck Williams with 17,130 minutes played... And, Damon, who has tossed in 11 three-pointers in the last four games, has 145 for the season and now needs 33 in the team s final 16 games (an average of slightly more than 2 a contest) to catch the club s one-season leaders in triples, Clifford Robinson...Robinson converted 178 during the campaign... Stoudamire made 156 three-pointers last season... His best year was his second in the NBA at Toronto in when he swished 176 triples. SHUFFLING THE STARTERS... Interim Coach Kevin Pritchard employed the Trail Blazers 12th different starting lineup when he inserted rookie forward Viktor Khryapa at the starting small forward spot in place of Darius Miles for four games beginning with March 14 at Memphis... All but two players on the current Blazers 14-man roster---richie Frahm and Ha Seung Jin---have seen starting duty in at least one game.

7 LESS THAN FULL STRENGTH... The Trail Blazers are having one of their worst seasons in years and the laundry list of injuries tells some of the story... Only 13 times in the 66 games played so far this season have the Blazers enjoyed having all 10 of their core players on deck... In those 13 games, Portland was Injuries have taken a particular toll on the forwards corps---zach Randolph, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Darius Miles and Ruben Patterson---all of whom have been starters... Collectively this quartet has missed 67 games... For a four-game stretch when the Blazers lost four times, Randolph, Abdur-Rahim and Miles were all on the sidelines... When two of the four have been out at the same time, the record is When Damon Stoudamire sat out last the March 12 game with Memphis with a strained hamstring, he became the 10th regular to miss playing because of injuries at one time or another during the season... The starting guard rotation at the beginning of the season---stoudamire, Derek Anderson and Nick Van Exel---have collectively missed 32 games. ABOUT MARCH... The Trail Blazers, currently 1-10 in games played in March, have four games remaining for the month so the best-possible scenario would give them a 5-10 mark... It means Portland now has four consecutive months with losing records (5-8 in December, 4-11 in January and 5-7 in February)... The last time the Blazers had four straight months with below.500 records was from November through February of the season... That year, when Mike Schuler was fired in mid-season and Rick Adelman took over, the club finished with a record... The worst previous March on record is was 5-12 during that season... The worst month ever for the Trail Blazers was February of 1986 when they won only 1 of 13 games... That year, the Blazers were for the year. MIKE RICE CALLS 1,500th... Veteran Trail Blazers broadcaster Mike Rice was at courtside calling his 1,500th game Blazers game Mar. 16 in Houston... Rice, whose career spanned 20 years as a successful high school and college coach and network broadcaster before joining the Blazers in 1990, has worked alongside all three of Portland s play-by-play radio broadcasters over the years---bill Schonely, Eddie Doucette and for the past seven seasons Brian Wheeler... He initially joined the Blazers broadcasting crew as a sidekick to Schonely for the season Portland ratcheted up Blazer Mania by making it all the way to the NBA Finals against the Detroit Pistons... Rice has become a fan favorite in his own right with his incisive commentary flowing smoothly alongside the play-by-play calling of the likes of the Schonz, Doucette and Wheeler.
