GETTING IT DONE IN THE CLASSROOM The UALR men s basketball program boasts an exhausted-eligbility graduation rate of 100 percent in the 11 years Steve Shields has served as head coach. All 32 players that have exhausted their eligibility under Shields have earned their diplomas. Outside of the classroom, Shields keeps his players involved in the community through bi-monthly visits to the Arkansas Children s Hospital, working with the Arkansas Special Olympics and the Miracle League, and participating in the Trojans for Education program, among other activities. DEPARTMENT ACADEMICS UALR has posted the highest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) in the state of Arkansas four of the last five years. The APR is a term-by-term measure of eligibility and retention for Division I student-athletes that was developed as an early indicator of eventual graduation rates. Based upon the most recent APR data, the UALR men s and women s basketball teams have the highest multi-year APR of all Division I member institutions in the state of Arkansas. UALR student-athletes posted a combined cumulative GPA of 3.13 for the Fall 2013 semester, with 67 percent earning a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. UALR boasts a 93 percent graduation rate for all student-athletes who remained at UALR and exhausted their eligibility measured over a 10-year period. UALR had 57.2 percent of its student-athletes honored by the Sun Belt Conference for academic achievement in the academic year. LEEPER IN THE CLASSROOM Junior Gus Leeper boasts a 3.9 GPA as a double major in international business and business management. Leeper was one of nine students from UALR s College of Business named to its Ambassadors Program, which pairs high achievers with area business leaders while providing networking opportunities. Leeper says he is looking forward to an international career focusing on sales, project management and international relations. Last summer, he studied abroad in Guadalajara, Mexico, while an internship in the regulatory department at Windstream in Little Rock provided experience with communications administration and policy issues. Champs In ten years as head coach at UALR, Steve Shields has led the Trojans to six championships and one NCAA Tournament appearance, all while becoming the winningest coach in school history. Entering his 11th year as head coach, Shields is coming off a season in which he guided one of the least-experienced teams in the nation to 11 conference victories and tied the Jack Stephens Center record for most home wins in a single season (13). Last year s success was just the latest in a series of accomplishments for a coach who has led his program to more Sun Belt Division championships (five) than any other school during his ten-year tenure. Not to mention leading the Trojans to the program s first-ever Sun Belt Tournament Championship and the school s first NCAA Tournament appearance since The 2004 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, Shields guided the Trojans to consecutive East Division championships in his first two seasons as head coach ( and ). The Trojans captured back-to-back division titles for the second time under Shields in and , with both squads reaching 20 wins something that hadn t been done at UALR since the and campaigns. The Trojans went 23-8 with a school-record 15-3 mark in conference play, led by First Team All-SBC selection Shane Edwards and Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year John Fowler. In the season, Shields guided one of the leastexperienced teams in the nation to a overall record and an 11-9 mark in Sun Belt play. In terms of minutes played by class, just 12 teams finished the year with a less-experienced group of players comprising the bulk of their minutes. With just one senior and two juniors on the roster, nine of UALR s top 11 players (in terms of minutes played) were freshmen and sophomores. Despite their youth, the Trojans managed to go 13-3 on the season at home, tying the Trojans for the most home victories in a single season since the Jack Stephens Center opened in Junior Will Neighbour earned All-Sun Belt Honors (Third Team) for the second-straight season, becoming the tenth all-conference selection in Shields tenure as head coach. Shields captured his fifth division championship in , as the Trojans rebounded from a 3-11 record in nonconference play to win the West Division with a 12-4 Sun Belt mark. Tasked with replacing the top three scorers off the 2011 NCAA Tournament team, UALR struggled early on but showed its potential in a game against No. 2 Kentucky on Jan. 3, The undersized Trojans took a lead into the intermission against a Kentucky squad which went on to win the national championship. UALR entered the conference season without a road win to its credit, but opened league play with road victories at North Texas and Denver en route to the program s first 5-0 Sun Belt start. UALR ended the year with a 12-4 mark in league play, including a 6-2 road record, led by All-Sun Belt selections D Andre Williams (1st) and Will Neighbour (2nd). Shields heads into the season with an overall record of in ten seasons at UALR (.534 winning percentage). He spent four years as the head coach at McLennan Community College prior to coming to UALR as an assistant coach for the season, and sports a lifetime coaching record of (.553 winning pct.) across all divisions.
