1 Saturday, August 29, 2015 Vol. 2, No. 166 TODAY S WEATHER Partly sunny today, mostly cloudy tonight. Chances of showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. Sheridan, Noblesville, Cicero, Arcadia, Atlanta, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield HIGH: 82 LOW: 65 New road to connect 146th, southbound Keystone By FRED SWIFT When the state highway department completed the massive and complex reconstruction of U.S. 31 at 146th Street, motorists no longer had a direct way of getting from 146th onto the Keystone Parkway southbound to Indianapolis. To remedy this problem the Hamilton County Highway Department is planning a new access road. Since 146th Street which separates Carmel and Westfield is a county highway, the county commissioners have taken on the responsibility for providing access to and from it. The project due for construction in 2018 will cost about $12 million because it involves a major bridge over Keystone. Federal money will pay for a third of the cost. The new access will extend the current Lowe's Way south then bridge Keystone and enter the highway about a half-mile south of 146th. A second phase of the project will eventually allow traffic to connect to Range Line Road at a point near the former Lotus Garden restaurant. This portion of the plan is several years off, according to highway director Brad Davis. Davis says the city of Carmel in which most of the work is to be done, is fully aware and in agreement with the plans. The city is not participating in the funding of the first phase of work for which design work starts soon. The access to Keystone should be popular with commuters and others who drive 146th and wish to turn south toward Indianapolis. Several years ago, before completion of the state's rebuilding of U.S. 31, county officials built the exit ramp from northbound Keystone to 146th, known as Lowe's Way. September, October programming As the season begins to turn, the Noblesville Parks and Recreation Department has announced its programming opportunities for September and October. 4 4 News Carmel Police offer vacation checks The Carmel Police Department has created a new way for Carmel residents to request a vacation check. A vacation check is available when residents are away from their residence for any period of time. When possible, officers can walk the perimeter of the residence and check the doors and windows for security purposes. An electronic Vacation Check Request form has been placed on the city website under Community Resource Programs/Neighborhood Crime Watch. The direct link is =759. This form will help ensure that pertinent information is captured efficiently and in the same manner for each request. Once the resident submits the online form, the information will be transmitted directly to an electronic roll call program for officers to read. Carmel Police anticipate an increase in vacation checks due to this added electronic feature. Procedure: Resident submits a Vacation Check Form If residents don t have internet access, officers or the front desk personnel can enter the information for them. If a resident needs to change the details of their submitted request, they will need to contact the Carmel Police Department front desk personnel ( ) during normal business hours (Mon-Fri 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) The Carmel Police Department is constantly looking for ways to better serve our community. This program is just one example of how our police officers work with the community to make the city of Carmel a safe and secure place to live and work. 6 6 Millers defeat Huskies By DON JELLISON Reporter Editor He wasn t the whole game. Not by any stretch. One player alone doesn t win the type of football battle two Hamilton County backyard rivals, Noblesville and Class 3A No. 6 Hamilton Heights, put on Friday evening at the Husky Dome in Arcadia. But, for a second consecutive week Noblesville senior running back Jarel Youree put on quite a show while leading Coach Lance Scheib s Millers to a 35-9 victory. Youree, who scored two touchdowns, carried the ball 18 times for 171 yards. He had a couple of boomers, too, once rushing 78 yards for a score and later rushing 26 yards for a touchdown. The two teams battled to a 7-7 first quarter stand sill and then Noblesville took charge a little by scoring twice in the second quarter. A one-yard spurt by quarterback Luke Mellow with 36 seconds left in the first half enabled Noblesville to enter halftime with a 21-7 advantage. That was a big touchdown, said Heights coach Mitch Street. But our problem was the mistakes we made.the penalties; the dropped passes, and the passes which missed. The way we ran the football tonight, I would have thought we had a chance to win the game, Street added. Hamilton Heights ran for 200 yards, keyed by the rushing of Clayton Cowan, 24 carries for 95 yards, and Jesse Brown, four carries for 77 yards. Brown scored Heights TD on a 62-yard run in the first quarter. Noblesville pulled away from the 21-7 first half lead by blanking Heights, except for a safety when Youree was tackled in the end zone, in the second half. We weren t as crisp or focused tonight, said Scheib. We didn t finish drives. Our defense settled down and played well. Mellow had a good night passing the football hitting on 10-of-20 for 128 yards. Jackson Thurman had three catches for 64 yards and JD Scheib three for 41. Both Thurman and Scheib caught touchdown passes. Scheib had another catch which set up a touchdown. Heights quarterback Ethan Jones was 8-of-23 for 100 yards. Sterling Weatherford led the Huskies in catches with four for 79 yards. Noblesville got on the board first when Melloh threw 26 yards to Thurman with 9:58 left in the first quarter. Andrew Little booted the PAT. Heights came right back, scoring two minutes later on Brown s 62-yard run. Henry Magdun kicked the extra point. Noblesville scored twice in the second period. Youree ran 78 yards. Then Melloh scored the late TD. Little tackled on two more PATs. Noblesville scored late in the third quarter on a 26-yarder by Youree and a PAT kick by Little. The Millers final TD came with 5:11 left in the game, a three-yard pass from Melloh to JD Scheib. Hamilton Heights scored a safety against the Millers when Tyler Anderson caught Youree in the end zone. Reporter photo by Brian Reddick Noblesville s Jarel Youree had another huge game for the Millers Friday night, helping them to a 35-9 victory at Hamilton Heights. Youree scored two touchdowns and ran for 178 yards. Noblesville, now 2-0 on the year, will host Fishers in a Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener on Friday. Hamilton Heights, 1-1, will travel to Lewis Cass. Turn to Page 7 for more pictures and game stats Visit our Web site, to subscribe to our print and editions

Pictured at right is Cole Cummings. Sheridan is winner In a Hoosier Heartland season opener Friday at Clinton Central, Sheridan fumbled the football five times and lost the pigskin on four occasions. Not to worry, Blackhawk fans. The old man took care of the situation. Jake Chesney, the senior leader on a young Sheridan team, carried the pigskin 29 times for 238 yards and also completed a 54-yard touchdown pass to lead Coach Bud Wright s Sheridan group to a victory. He ran for a pair of touchdowns. The win put Sheridan at 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. We played well except for the fumbles, said Wright. We ve got to learn to protect the football. Some of our kids haven t carried that often. Chesney was outstanding. It s a good thing Jake didn t miss the bus, Wright chuckled. He has to make good things happen for us. He has to be the guy. But I told the kids tonight that they have to take some of load off Jake. I don t like him having to carry the football that many times. It was a typical Sheridan victory. The Blackhawks ran and then they ran some more. Sheridan had 61 rushing play for 377 yards. Along with Chesney s 238 yards, senior running back K.J. Acevedo carried 19 times for 85 yards. Sheridan led just 7-6 at halftime, that touchdown coming on a 4-yard run by Chesney with 5:05 left in the second quarter. He also booted the extra point. The Blackhawks took command with 13 points in the third quarter. Chesney scored on the first play from scrimmage in the second half on a 52-yard run. He again kicked the PAT. With 2:18 left in the half, Acevedo broke a 33-yarder to give Sheridan a 20-6 lead. Chesney went to the air for Sheridan s final touchdown with 7:53 left in the game. He hit Gunner Williams on a 54-yard sling. 9 9 Pepiot-to-Manley score wins it for Rocks Turnabout is fair play, and Westfield was more than happy to put that old saying into practice on Friday at Southport. With 6.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Ryan Pepiot threw a 40-yard pass to Evan Manley, who scored the game-winning touchdown for the Shamrocks. William Harrison made his fourth extra-point kick of the night soon after, and that put the exclamation point on a win for Class 5A No. 4 Westfield over the 6A No. 11 Cardinals. This was the second time the two teams played each other. Last year, Southport came to Westfield's place and won This year things turned out differently, and the 'Rocks are now 2-0. It was a back and forth game throughout. Pepiot answered the Cardinals' first touchdown score with a quarterback sneak into the end zone midway through the first quarter. Jackson Garrett began the second period with an interception return touchdown, and Pepiot and Manley teamed up for a pass play score minutes later. Southport held a lead at halftime, but Westfield shut out the Cardinals in the third. Johnny Swidan helped out with an eight-yard touchdown run. In the fourth quarter, Harrison kept his team ahead by making two field goals. The Shamrocks' lead held until there was 1:20 to play, when Southport scored and made a successful two-point conversion. But Westfield had the last word on Friday. Pepiot had an outstanding game, totaling 265 yards on 23 of 40 passes. Manley caught six for 95 yards, while Lucas Schultz also had six receptions, for 66 yards. Brandon Karsnick led the rushing with 83 yards in 14 carries. Next up for the 'Rocks is a game at Zionsville, which is tied for eighth in the 5A coaches poll. Tiger victory Visit our Web site over Pike Not at all meaning to slight the offense in any way, Fishers coach Rick Wimmer did a lot of talking about his defense following the Tigers 20-8 victory at Pike last evening. They passed for 311 yards against us, Wimmer said, but we held them to 54 yards rushing. That s good against that type of offense. Their only touchdown came when we messed up a punt. We gave them a safety in the fourth quarter. As a result, Fishers moved to 2-0 on the year while looking ahead to next Friday and a Hoosier Crossroads Conference opener at Noblesville. Our defensive line really played well, Wimmer continued. Our defensive ends did a good job, too. Our defense kept things in front of them. Fishers jumped out to a two touchdown advantage in the opening quarter. We scored twice, but missed both extra points, Wimmer pointed out. We moved the football, but we didn t always have real good balance. Still, it was a Fishers offense which hit Pike for 313 yards. The Tigers rushed for 161 yards and passed for 152. Fishers defense spent time on the field. Pike got off 71 plays and gained 365 yards. Fishers ran 62 plays. Fishers had a solid 1-2 running punch with Jeremy Chinn carrying 21 times for 84 yards and Jermaine Huddleston 16 times for 67 yards. The quarterback, Zach Eaton, had another outstanding game. He hit on 9-of-17 passes and he also rushed six times for a total of 17 yards. Keyshawn Burrell gave Eaton a big lift with seven catches for 131 yards. Last evening at North Central, Poiry hit on 16-of-22 passes for 252 yards and three touchdowns to lead Coach Scott May s Royals to a victory. Then Poiry hit Greg Miller for 44 yards and a score. David Tsetse got the third TD on a four-yard run. Stephen McLeish booted all three extra points. The Royals got two more touchdowns in the third quarter. Matio scored on a four-yard run Poiry passed six yards to Matt Klink. Southeastern s final TD came in the fourth frame on a one-yard run by Adam Mullett. Arbra Ross kicked the PAT. HSE put together a solid running game to go along with Poiry s air show. The Royals rushed for 138 yards. Tsetse had 76 yards in 13 carries and Curtis Goss carried eight times for 62 yards. Greg Miller was on the receiving end of seven passes for 86 yards. Eight different Royals caught passes. Southeastern s defense also played well, holding the Panthers to just 78 yards rushing and 164 yards passing. While GC did have decent statistical numbers, it couldn't find the end zone. "They outcoached us, they outhit us, they outplayed us," said Golden Eagles coach Tom Dilley. "You pick a phase, you pick a task that needed done, I think they did it better than we did." Elliott Charlebois completed 13 of 27 passes for 109 yards, while Brennan Thieneman was Guerin's leading rusher. He gained 62 yards on 22 carries. The Golden Eagles are now 1-1 for the season. They travel to Marmion Academy in Aurora, Ill. for their next game, which is Saturday, Sept. 5.
