Up two points with 1:44 remaining, senior guard Jessie Wilcox sunk a three-pointer, and Ebony Ellis followed with a breakaway lay-up to give the Huskies a lead with just over a minute left, sealing the win. The win is the first in a MAC opener for fourth year head coach Carol Owens. improved to 6-8 on the season. Central Michigan, which held the sixth-ranked scoring offense in the nation entering Wednesday s contest, dropped to 8-6 (0-1 MAC). The duo of Wilcox and Kylie York, a junior, was especially effective. The two combined for 29 points, nine rebounds, eight assists and just two turnovers. Owens also complimented Ellis, a sophomore, who poured in 17 points to go with eight boards and three blocks. played some of its best defense of the year en route to its third win in four games. The Huskies held CMU to just 28 percent (9-of-32) shooting in the second half, and 35 percent (21-of-60) for the game. The Huskies set the stingy tone from the start, holding the Chippewas to 2-of- 11 shooting over the first six minutes. Later in the half, NIU held CMU without a basket for over four minutes. The stout defense kept the Huskies within two points at halftime, despite allowing eight scattershot three-pointers, and trailing by as much as nine. Coming out of the locker room, refocused on defense. The Huskies stifled the Chippewas, who shot 3-of-17 over the first 11 minutes of the second half. The effort spent shutting down CMU allowed the Huskies to take a seven-point lead, 63-56, on a Wilcox three-pointer with 6:42 left. Central Michigan answered with a 7-0 burst to tie the game for the sixth time. On the next play, York hit an 18-foot step-back jump shot to give the Huskies the lead for good. Though a dominant second-half defense drove the Huskie win, offense also set the bar for conference play high. Four players scored in double figures, while the Huskies hit 50 percent (8-of-16) of their shots from behind the arc, and 47.5 percent (29-of-61) overall from the field. Perhaps even more impressive, the Huskies did not commit a turnover for the final 5:18 of the game, after giving it away 23 times before that. THE SERIES owns an advantage over in the all time series. However, the Huskies have won the last five contests. The two met last season only once, with NIU winning, 69-49, Jan. 23, 2008 at the Convocation Center. The game the two were scheduled to play Feb. 23, 2008 was cancelled due the February 14th tragedy at NIU. s last victory came March 5, 2005 when the Rockets beat NIU, 76-61, in the MAC Tournament. MAC Pct (4th) (3rd) (4th) Totals Carol Owens embarks on her fourth season at the helm of University s women s basketball team. In that time, she has built NIU into a contender in the Mid- American Conference and has been recognized by her peers as one of the top coaches in the country. In recognition of that fact, Owens has been selected to coach four national teams, spending two years as an assistant before being asked to lead two others, and two professional organizations have selected her to serve on their board of directors. While those accomplishments are impressive, they are not surprising. From her days as a player at, through the years she has spent working her way up through the coaching ranks, Owens passion for basketball and drive for success has led her to this point. Since taking over, Northern posted its first winning season in five years, going in and advanced to the semifinals of the 2007 MAC Women s Basketball Tournament. In , the Huskies broke several school records, including threepointers made (236) and attempted (639) and NIU set the single-season mark for free throw percentage, hitting 78.9 percent from the charity stripe. The success Owens has achieved has not gone unnoticed, and earning the respect of those in your field is the highest compliment any coach can receive. In 2008, Owens was named to the Board of Directors of both the Black Coaches Association and Women s Basketball Coaches Association. Owens national reputation has grown during her NIU tenure as she has twice been invited to serve as a coach with USA Basketball, beginning in April of 2006, when she was selected to serve as an assistant to DePaul s Doug Bruno on Team USA s FIBA Americas U18 Championship Team. Owens spent the summer of 2006 in Colorado Springs, Colo. helping lead the red, white and blue to the gold medal. She was back on Team USA s bench in the summer of 2007, this time in Europe, coaching USA Basketball s Women s U19 World Championship Team. As they did the year before, Team USA cruised through the field and brought home the gold. The powers that be in USA Basketball must have been impressed with what they saw from Owens because in March of 2008, they asked her to become head coach of the 2008 U18 World Championship Team. Owens led Team USA to gold, defeating Argentina, Owens has coached some outstanding players during her career, sending four to the WNBA. At, her most famous pupil was Stephanie Raymond. The 20th overall pick in the 2007 Women s National Basketball Association Draft, Raymond is the first Huskie in school history drafted by the league. Her selection by the Chicago Sky topped off one of the best seasons by a Huskie in recent memory. Raymond closed out her career at NIU as the school s fifth-leading scorer, and set the school record for steals and assists in a game. She also set the school record for free throw percentage in a season (90.1 percent) and career free throw percentage (83.9 percent). Raymond is just one of four players she s help send to the WNBA. During her tenure in South Bend, Owens coaching focus centered on the development of Notre Dame s post players. Her most famous pupil, Ruth Riley ( ), capped off her Irish days as the consensus National Player of the Year ( ) and earned All-America status. Riley, Katryna Gaither ( ) and Kelley Siemon ( ) were all selected in the WNBA draft upon completion of their Notre Dame careers.
