5 THE COACHING STAFF

6 Samantha Morrow Head Coach First Season Texas Wesleyan '81 Samantha Morrow s road to being a head women s basketball coach at a Division I program began at a small town few people stop at unless they had a fl at tire or needed directions. And while Graford, Texas, has suddenly become the home of Kentucky basketball coach Billy Gillespie, you might save a little paint for the water tower to add Morrow s name alongside and the favorite daughter of the small town of 494, give or take a few. Named the eighth women s bas- ketball coach last spring, Morrow comes to after win- ning four consecutive Class 5A state championships at Mans- fi eld High School from 1999 to She was named the 2002 National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association s National Coach of the Year and completed her prep career with 413 wins in 14 seasons. Morrow s high school background does not scare UT Arlington Athlet- ics Director Pete Carlon, who ventured into the prep ranks to hire previous coach Donna Capps who compiled two NCAA Tournament appearances and the program s fi rst two Southland Conference titles in the past three seasons. There is not a high school gym in Texas that she can t walk into and have instant respect, said Carlon during Morrow s press conference on May 16. We think she will continue to build the program into one of the best in the nation. I feel right at home (at ), said Morrow, who took a break from a busy summer schedule to talk about her transition from high school to college coaching. The people are like family and that meant a lot to me (in my decision). MORROWS ALL-TIME COACHING RECORDS Years Record Pct. 7 BASKETBALL AT BIRTH Growing up in tiny Graford, Texas, 65 miles southwest of Fort Worth, basketball was and still is a way of life. I knew I wanted to be a basketball coach when I was in the sixth grade, said Morrow. Graford is not your typical West Texas town. The only grocery store bears the Morrow name and there is just one restaurant to eat at. The community was too small to fi eld much of a football team, so it didn t even try. Basketball is a birthright in Graford, said current Graford Athletics Director and Head Boys Basketball Coach, J.B. Littlejohn. (Graford) has always been a strong basketball program. There is a small pocket of towns without football when you include Lipan and Ponder. There is a mind set here - you play basketball and you play it well. The talk in the summer here isn t football it is how well are you going to do in basketball. (Current University of Kentucky men s basketball coach and Graford native Billy Gillespie) and Sam have helped make it OK to be a basketball school, said Littlejohn. ALWAYS A WORKER Morrow drove a cattle truck, hauled hay, loaded and unloaded 50-pound sacks of feed, shoveled oats and stocked shelves at the Morrow Grocery while growing up in Graford. Morrow s parents and grandparents were ranchers. She grew up around cattle, horses and the store. After her father s passing in 2000, Morrow s mother continues to run the family s 500-head cattle business. Working hard was the way of life at the Morrow home. I got a penny for everything I did, recalled Morrow. It was good working for my dad, but you can t call in sick. In the summer, you worked in the day and went to the gym at night. In the late fall and winter (basketball) was your entertainment on Tuesday and Friday night. My older sister played basketball. The people I idolized were the basketball players. Without a television in the household for a longtime according to Samantha s mother, Judy Morrow. Summer nights in Graford were spent at the high-school gym just a rock throw from Morrow s front yard. I knew the superintendent s son so we d get the keys to the gym. Weekdays we d play until nine and on Friday nights sometimes until 11. We took good care of the place. Basketball was what you did for entertainment in Graford. When you live in a town of 300, people could not do anything wrong. (The town s adults) would bust your butt if you don t stay out of trouble. Education was also a must. Both of Morrow s parents, father Ervin and mother Judy, taught school in the GISD. Ervin, who also served on the school board, taught math and Judy lectured in sciences before devoting time to her husband s cattle ranch. Morrow earned a scholarship to Ranger Junior College and later to Texas Wesleyan University where she earned a bachelor s degree in She completed her master s degree at Tarleton State University in 1987 while coaching at Stephenville High School. Morrow is an admitted sports junkie. I can watch any sport at any time. ESPN was the greatest invention; I love to watch sports. In a small town, she had her chance at almost every sport the school offered. She won the Class B state girls golf championship as a sophomore in 1975, and was a participant in the 2002 Olympic torch relay for the Salt Lake City Games. A member of the region-qualifying relay team in track and fi eld, she continues to be an avid runner. Morrow even has an interest in a racehorse and frequents Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie. Her love of animals comes from the days in Graford. When girls weren t allowed to agriculture classes, Morrow participated in the Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H where she raised calves and sheep for show. She has owned as many as four dogs at one time and currently has two dogs and cats. Morrow s decision to leave an assistant athletic director position within the Mansfi eld ISD was due in part because is a gold mine (for women s basketball). I believe we have an excellent opportunity to win a game, then two, then three, Morrow said of the team s capability at the NCAA Tournament. I want to go beyond being Southland Conference champions. And thinks it has found the diamond in the rough to do just that. AV 7

8 Shane Laflin Assistant Coach First Season '04 Shane Lafl in begins his fi rst year as an assistant coach for the women s basketball program. 9 Lindsey Wilson Assistant Coach Second Season Central Oklahoma '06 Lindsey Wilson, who is in her second season as an assistant at UTA, graduated from The University of Central Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education in She was a three-year letterwinner for the Bronchos after transferring from Southeastern Oklahoma State following her freshman year in As a senior, she ranked among the leaders in the Lone Star Conference after making 37.2 percent (48 of 129) of her three-pointers. A three-year starter at Hydro-Eakly High School, Wilson helped her team to three straight state titles. She averaged 17 points and 3 assists per game as a senior in 2002 to earn all-state honors. The Wilson name in no stranger to the coaching circles in the state of Oklahoma. Her father is longtime prep coach Rick Wilson, who has won six state championships at Weatherford (Okla.) High School. Wilson will handle academics, travel and tape exchange within the women s basketball program. Ashley Purgason Director of Operations First Season '06 Arlington native and former Maverick women s basketball player, Ashley Purgason was named director of basketball operations by head coach Samantha Morrow in August. Purgason will be the fourth member of Morrow s staff and will assist with travel, recruiting and academics. Purgason was a three-year letter winner for Morrow at Mansfi eld High School, where she played with Maverick assistant coach Erin Grant. Together Purgason and Grant led Mansfi eld to its second, third and fourth straight 5A state championships. After spending one year at New York University, Purgason transferred to and graduated with honors in May 2006 with a bachelor of science degree in biology. She walked-on to the Maverick women s basketball team and played 12 games as a sophomore before an injury cut her playing career short. 10 THE MAVERICKS

11 First year head coach, Samantha Morrow, inherits a squad, which went 24-9 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. The Mavericks also set several school records including going 16-0 in conference play. However, Morrow s fi rst obstacle will be to fi nd a way to replace the leagues and the Mavericks leading scorer in Terra Wallace. Wallace is UTA s all-time leading scorer with 1,751 career points. She also holds the records for three-point fi eld goals made (218), attempted (604) and free throws made (363). Wallace in addition to fellow outgoing seniors Ashley Bobb and Tojjinay Thompson were the leaders, which took the Mavs to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years. They combined to score 3,123 points, grab 1,553 rebounds and dished out 586 assists in 270 career starts. will attempt to atone for its losses with fi ve returning upperclassmen, four sophomores, and a fi ve-member rookie class. THE SENIORS has two starters returning from last seasons Southland Conference Championship team - seniors Maryann Abanobi and Tiffeny Riles. Both are preseason all-conference selections after starting in all 33 games last season and averaging more than 27 minutes of action per contest. They have both responded very well to the new coaches and the new system we are implementing, Morrow said I am looking for their leadership both on the court and off. Abanobi will be called on to step-up her game in the absence of Wallace. A two-time SLC student-athlete of the year, Abanobi was the Mavericks second leading scorer last season with 10.8 points a game. The Sugar Land, Texas, native fi nished the year with 19 double-digit scoring performances including a career-high 21-points against Texas State. Abanobi recorded her fi rst double double against McNeese State on Feb. 10 with 11 points and 10 boards. Last season, Riles upped her point average by 8.7 points per game, going from 0.8 as a sophomore to 9.5 per game as a junior. Riles also ended last season as the Mavs second leading rebounder with six boards a game. With 13.3 points and 6.7 SLC PRESEASON POLLS PREVIEW rebounds a game she earned a spot on the SLC all-tournament team. The Lewisville, Texas, native recorded three double doubles on the season and pulled in a career-high 20 rebounds at UTSA. THE JUNIORS will turn to a trio of juniors for leadership this season, headlined by Candice Champion. The only junior to play all 33 games last season she averaged 10.3 minutes and 3.7 points a game. Power forward Erin Dixon played in 19 games earning her fi rst start against Cal State Fullerton. She established a career-high 14 points in the Mavs win over Arkansas-Little Rock. The Pfl ugerville native fi n- ished the year with averages of 4.1 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, recording her fi rst double double with 11 points and 13 rebounds at Michigan State. s junior class rounds out with Jamie Buxkemper, a Ballinger, Texas, native who saw limited time last season but should contend for more time on the court this season. Buxkemper appeared in 15 contests playing a season high 22 minutes against Sam Houston State. Dixon and Buxkemper both missed half of last season due to injury and are eager to stay healthy and be a force on this year s squad. 12 and we plan to play Erin a lot at the power forward position, Morrow said. They are both a little frustrated and ready to get out there, and when the opportunity comes, they will be ready to put forth the extra effort. THE SOPHOMORES Four of s returning players have only one year of experience under their belts, but those four players will be asked to perform at a much heightened level this season. Meghan Nelson leads the list having played in 32 of 33 games last season earning a spot in the starting line-up in fi ve of those contests. Nelson was the team s top scoring freshman with 4.4 points a game. The Cedar Hill native scored double digits in six contests including a career-high 15 points against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. One of UTA s two returning point guards - sophomore Kiarra Shofner - could be asked to up her scoring abilities after averaging 1.2 points per game and attempting only seven three-point shots last season. Morrow said, I already knew what Meghan could do, that is why Kiarra has been such a pleasant surprise. She has worked on her ball handling this off season. We look forward to seeing her play some of the point for us. LaTosha Duffey and Kristina Grace fi nish the returning sophomore class. Duffey who played in 28 games last season 12 will be returning as one of fi ve shooting guards. LaTosha is really doing some good things offensively, Morrow said. Grace, who comes from Houston, is the team s only sophomore post player. She saw little playing time behind Riles last season, but did appear in 26 games averaging 2.7 minutes a game. THE NEWCOMERS This season s incoming rookie group includes a transfer from a Big East school, a redshirt freshman from last season and four incoming freshmen. Kayla Guidry joins the Mavericks after only one semester at DePaul University and will be eligible to play starting in the spring. Joining Guidry as a veteran of the newcomers will be Shay Bowman, who was forced to redshirt last year after a shoulder injury. Freshman Sandrine Nzeukou comes with a laundry list of accolades, including being named Southern Arizona s Female Basketball Player of the Year. Nzeukou (pronounced ZOO-koo) will provide depth for the Mavericks in the post and especially on the glass, after topping 13 rebounds and 20 points a game as a senior at Tucson, Arizona s Rincon University High School. Morrow said, Sandrine is a lot like Candice and is going to be a powerful person in there. She is going to get rebounds and they are both strong enough that they are going to be able to score. Shalyn Martin and Tamara Simmons come to from right down the road at Mansfi eld Summit High School, where they played for Coach Morrow. Both could end up being Southland Conference scoring threats. The Mavs fi nal piece in the newcomers puzzle is Adriana Crittle, a native of Houston, who helped lead Hightower High School to a fourth place fi nish in the Fort Bend ISD Play-offs. THE SCHEDULE Road games at Big 12 Conference powers Texas and Texas A&M and a trip to the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS Tournament in Malibu, Calif., highlight s women s basketball schedule. The Mavericks will feature two home AV exhibitions and 28 regular-season games, including an 11-game home schedule at UTA s Texas Hall. We are excited about the schedule we have put together this season, especially our trip to California for the tournament at Pepperdine, said Morrow. We are not backing down this season. We have several tough games scheduled against NCAA Tournament veterans like Texas, Texas A&M and TCU. After two exhibition games at home, UTA will kick-off the regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at Northern Arizona followed with its home opener on Nov. 12 against fi rst-time opponent Pittsburg State. The Mavs will play in the fi rst of two in-season tournaments, traveling to the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS Tournament hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif., for two games over the Thanksgiving weekend (Nov ). The second tournament is the Charlotte Christmas Classic in Charlotte, N.C. (Dec ), which features fi rst-time meetings with Elon and either Charlotte or Charleston Southern. Highlighting the non-conference schedule will be road contests at Texas on Nov. 29 and at Texas A&M on Dec. 28 for a rematch of the fi rst-round game at last seasons NCAA Tournament. The Mavs will also play host to a fi fth fi rst-time opponent in Marshall on Dec. 18 in their last home contest before conference play begins. UTA closes out non-conference action with a Jan. 4, 2008 game at TCU. It is a tough non-conference schedule, but it will help us get ready for conference play. Our goal is to win the regular season and conference tournament titles to get back to the NCAA tournament, Morrow said. The Mavs will open and close their 16- game conference slate at Texas Hall. UTA opens Southland Conference play on Jan. 10 against Central Arkansas at Texas Hall, and will end the regular season on March 8 as it plays host to Texas State. Every conference game is going to be good, Morrow said. There are lot of new coaches and new players in the league this year. Lamar has a very different team from last year and UTSA has a transfer who will be playing a lot for them. No doubt Stephen F. Austin is going to be a highlight for us.
