UTSA is 10-6 on the season and 2-1 in league play with Southland conference wins over Central Arkansas and Northwestern State. The Roadrunners dropped their conference opener to Lamar on Jan. 12 in San Antonio. Three Runners are averaging double-digit points on the season led by Terrie Davis with 11.8 points a game. Whitney York adds 11.1 points a game while Monica Gibbs is contributing 10.0 points a game and leads the team on the glass with 7.9 rebounds a game. Series History with the Roadrunners... This will be the 42nd meeting between the Mavericks and Roadrunners. UTA holds a lead in the series, but UTSA leads 13-7 in games played in San Antonio. The Mavs won all three meetings with the Runners last season, including a win on the conference tournament on March 9 in Houston, Texas. The Coaches... Samantha Morrow became the eighth head coach in UT Arlington women s basketball history in August. She has posted a 9-6 record in her first season coaching at the collegiate level after amassing a (.843) record at the high school level. Rae Rippetoe-Blair has posted a record in her 9th season with the Roadrunners. Looking Ahead... After establishing herself as one of the most successful high school basketball coaches in Texas, Morrow take over the reigns of a Maverick program which went 24-9 last year and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second time. Morrow s high school coaching career is legendary with an.843 winning percentage, a record of over 14 seasons, four consecutive Class 5A girls state championships, 10 district titles, 13 playoff appearances and posting eight seasons of 30-or-more wins while the coach at Mansfield and Mansfield Summit High School. She led Mansfield High to four consecutive Class 5A state championships from 1999 to For her efforts, she was named the 2002 National Federation of High School (NFHS) Coaches Association s National Coach of the Year. Morrow continued her success when Mansfield was expanded to Summit, guiding the Lady Jaguars to the playoffs every year since the program s inception, including a berth in the state tournament last March.

Junior Erin Dixon joined the freshmen duo in double digits with 12 points on the night, also matching her season-high. UT Arlington and Southeastern Louisiana matched each other point for point early, but a tre from Simmons at the 15:22 mark sparked a 14-0 Maverick run. Senior Maryann Abanobi sparked another 9-5 Maverick run to give UTA the 16-point advantage (30-14) with 9:54 left in the half. The Mavs took a lead into the locker room at the break behind their best first half shooting of the season hitting 60.9 percent from the floor. In the second half, UTA drove its lead to 18 (56-38) on a lay up from Martin with 12:45 on the clock. Three straight made baskets from Kristy Carlin cut UTA s back to 14 (62-48) with 5:19 left in the game, but the Mavs countered with a 6-2 run to regain an 18-point advantage with 3:24 left on the clock. THREE-POINT STREAK REACHES 183 The Mavs have extended their consecutive game s streak with at least one threepointer to 183 games when it connected on 4-of-11 triples at Southeastern Louisiana. The last time UTA went without a three-point field goal was Jan. 10, 2002 against McNeese State when the team went 0-for-11 from behind the arc. And both true freshmen continue to see action as Martin and Simmons have played and started in all regular season games. ONE TO 500 UT Arlington women s basketball program only needs one more win to reach the 500-wins mark. The all-time record currently stands at , after the Mavs win at Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 19. Last seasons 24 wins marked an all-time high for the Mavericks and drove the teams all-time record to

4 HEART OF A CHAMPION Junior Candice Champion kicked off the season with back-to-back record games. In the Mavs season opener at Northern Arizona she led the Mavs by scoring a career-high 14 points and pulling in 6 rebounds. In UTA s home opener on Nov. 12, Champion led the Mavs yet again upping her career-best to 18 points and added a career-high five steals in the match-up with Pittsburg State. Champion s production came off the bench in both games. Champion recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds against Marshall on Dec. 18 at Texas Hall. Set a new career-high with 19 points at Charlotte while recording her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds Bested her career-high with 21 points at Nicholls State on Jan. 17, hitting 9-of-12 from the floor ABANOBI NAMED SLC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FOR JAN. 2-7 UT Arlington guard Maryann Abanobi was named Southland Conference player of week after averaging 17 points a game and shooting over 50 percent from the floor in four games over the Christmas Holiday. Earning her first honor of the season, Abanobi led the Mavericks in scoring on the season with 15.9 points a game and extended her consecutive double-digit scoring steak to eight. Abanobi scored 26 points in a triple overtime loss to Marshall on Dec. 18 hitting 11-of-19 from floor and 2-of-5 from beyond the arch. In the Mavericks come from behind victory at Charlotte on Dec. 21, she secured the win scoring the final four points of the game. The senior remained tops in the SLC for free throw shooting hitting 11-of-13 from the line over the break. MANSFIELD REUNION The Mavericks new head coach Samantha Morrow comes to UTA after a very successful career as a girls high school basketball coach in the Mansfield ISD. But, Morrow is not alone, she is joined on her coaching staff and team by six Mansfield ISD products. Assistant coach Erin Grant and Director of Basketball Operations Ashley Purgason both played for Morrow at Mansfield High School when they won four consecutive Texas State Championships from Morrow s other assistant coach Shane Laflin played boys basketball at Mansfield High School and graduated from there in Three players on this years squad also played for Morrow after she transitioned over to coach at Mansfield Summit High School when it was built in Sophomore LaTosha Duffey is reunited this season with former Summit teammates Shalyn Martin and Tamara Simmons, both are freshmen. MORROW SIGNS FIRST EVER COLLEGE RECRUIT UTA head coach Samantha Morrow has signed her first ever recruit as a college coach. Nicole Terral a 5 7 guard from Mansfield Timberview High School has signed a NLI to join the Mavericks for the season. WILDFIRES END PEPPERDINE TOURNAMENT EARLY The second day of action at the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by Pepperdine was cancelled due to wildfires in California. UTA was scheduled to play Wisconsin in the championship game on Saturday, Nov. 24, and host Pepperdine was supposed to face Mississippi in the battle for third place. ABANOBI AND RILES NAMED TO ALL-SLC PRESEASON TEAMS Seniors Maryann Abanobi and Tiffeny Riles were named to the All-SLC first and second teams respectively after leading the Mavs to a perfect 16-0 record in conference play last season. Abanobi is UTA s leading returning scorer after averaging 10.8 points a game last season.
