2 Media Information Media Coverage The UTSA Sports Information office assists members of the media with their coverage of Roadrunners Athletics by providing player and coach interviews, feature ideas, pregame notes and updated statistics. In addition to the 2009 tennis media guide, media members may check UTSA s official athletics Web site goutsa.com for the latest information on all the department s 16 intercollegiate sports. There you will find match recaps, box scores, updated statistics, weekly notes, player and coach biographies, schedules, rosters, photos and archives of most tennis matches. Interviews All interviews with coaches and student-athletes must be arranged by contacting tennis contact Carlos Valdez. Telephone interviews are available to the media on a call-back basis at a time that is convenient for the coach or student-athlete. Post-match interviews with coaches and players will be conducted courtside following a 10-minute cooling off period. Practices UTSA welcomes all media to attend tennis practices during the season. Please call the sports information office for practice times and requests for interviews. In most cases, coaches and student-athletes are available before and after practice. 3 The newly-renovated UTSA Tennis Center, which has hosted the Southland Conference Men s & Women s Tennis Championships on 10 different occassions, has drawn rave reviews from both opposing coaches and fans alike. Prior to the 2005 season, the facility underwent a face lift that included upgraded stands, covered seating for spectators, court resurfacing, new fencing, new wind screens and coaches office improvements. Complete with 10 lighted Laykold courts, the center courts are surrounded by spectator grandstands that can host 800 spectators. The practice area, complete with warmup backboards, can accomodate six to eight players. The Patio Club area debuted in and has been a huge success with seats being sold during the season. Also located within the complex is a four-room building that houses both the men s and women s tennis offices, locker rooms and restrooms. The tennis center previously has hosted the SLC Tournament in 1997 (men), 2001 (men & women), 2002 (men & women), 2004 (men), 2005 (men & women) and 2007 (men & women). UTSA Tennis Center goutsa.com

4 2009 Men s Season Outlook Fresh off its fourth consecutive Southland Conference Tournament finals appearance, UTSA looks to make another run at the SLC Championship this season under the direction of 10th-year head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein. The Roadrunners welcome back five letterwinners and a trio of newcomers from last year s squad that posted an overall record and 3-3 mark in league play. We have a complete team from top to bottom as we enter the spring season, Trittenwein said. The combination of our returning players and newcomers give us the balance that I have not had in past years. The guys coming back have a lot of playing experience, which will give us an advantage as we begin the season. Four players collected postseason honors a year ago. Junior Rodrigo Morgado, the 2007 SLC Freshman of the Year, paired up with sophomore Daniel Moreiras for first-team All-SLC accolades at No. 2 doubles, while senior Robin Fernandes and sophomore Max Stratmann garnered the circuit s top honors at No. 3 doubles. Moreiras added second-team all-conference accolades at No. 5 singles. Singles Trittenwein will have a trio of Brazilians playing at the top of his lineup. Moreira or Morgado will split time playing at No. 1 and freshman Pedro Zanotelli will man the No. 3 position in place of Fernandes, who will sit out the year due to injury. Morgado accumulated an singles record with six of his 11 victories coming at the No. 2 spot a year ago. The Balneario Camboriu, Brazil, native also posted a 4-2 mark in conference play and collected 10 doubles wins, including a perfect 6-0 ledger with teammate Moreiras en route to all-conference accolades. victory at the UTSA Invitational the following week. Junior Jorge Delgado, who transferred from Louisiana-Lafayette, will command the No. 4 singles slot. As a sophomore, he posted a 10-8 singles record and also picked up three doubles wins. The El Paso native was tabbed a 2005 Student-Athlete of the Year at Blessed Hope Academy, where he was a four-year letterwinner. Making his presence known on the team and in the league in just his first season was Moreiras, who was an all-league performer at the No. 5 position last season. The San Antonio native made an immediate impact with a team-best 16-6 singles record and a 5-1 mark in league play. Eleven of his 16 triumphs came at the No. 5 slot, including a 3-1 mark in conference action. Stratmann will again line up at No. 6 this year. The Bonn, Germany, native went 7-14 overall and 3-3 in SLC play. He collected his first-ever title by winning the UTSA Invitational Singles Consolation Orange Draw in the fall. He also teamed with Fernandes for a 6-1 mark at No. 2 doubles, including a 3-0 SLC record, en route to all-conference honors at that position. Incoming freshman transfer Shariq Khan will see plenty of action throughout the bottom order of the lineup. The Sugar Land native transferred from Prairie View A&M prior to the spring semester and was a member of an Austin High School squad that was a top-five team in Doubles One of the top three doubles pairings in the league return in first-team All-SLC performers Moreiras and Morgado at the No. 2 spot. The duo posted a perfect 5-0 record and was undefeated in conference play (3-0). Meanwhile, Trittenwein will send a new lineup onto the court at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots this spring. Moreira has tallied 28 career singles triumphs in his three seasons in the Alamo City. Despite battling injuries last season, he played every position but No. 1 and managed to post nine victories in doubles and seven singles wins. Zanotelli, who hails from Fortaleza, Brazil, made his Roadrunners debut this fall, where he collected his first collegiate win at the ITA Regionals on Oct. 3. Zanotelli also picked up a singles Daniel Moreiras earned first-team All-SLC honors at No. 2 doubles and second-team accolades at No. 5 singles in his first year as a Roadrunner. Playing in the top position will be the tandem of Moreira and Zanotelli, while Delgado and Stratmann are slated to team up at No. 3. Schedule UTSA is scheduled to play 21 dual matches, 11 of which will be contested in the Alamo City, and a full slate of six conference matches. This year s SLC Tournament will be held on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi from April UTSA Roadrunners Tennis

5 Entering her third season as head coach of the UTSA women s tennis program, Erin Boisclair is building a foundation that will allow UTSA to become one of the top contenders in the Southland Conference. Boisclair has an experienced and well-rounded team taking the court this spring, with five returning letterwinners to go along with three newcomers. Among the returnees is trio of seniors in Monika Drabkova, Karen Scida a second-team All-SLC honoree at No. 1 singles a year ago and Nathalie Wallin. Also back are junior Holly Phillips and sophomore Caroline Dedering. Meanwhile, freshmen Katie Ottenbreit, Micaela Silva and Lauren Springer all bring impressive credentials to the Alamo City. I m excited about the season because we have a wide variety of talent this year, Boisclair said. The seniors have done a really good job in getting the freshmen prepared for the season. The most important thing I have preached to them is attitude and staying positive on and off the court. They have caught on in what I m trying to do with them and understanding that it s going to take a team effort to win matches. Singles The Roadrunners return all but one of their singles players and leading the way is Scida, who was a second-team all-league performer at the No. 1 spot a year ago. The Tucuman, Argentina, native led the team with 14 wins at the top spot and she also posted a 9-2 mark in conference play. She won 10 contests in a row at one point last season and has accumulated 39 career wins in her three seasons. Wallin, who brings 61 matches of experience to the club, will return to the No. 2 slot in her fourth and final campaign. The Stockholm, Sweden, native appeared in 23 tilts and collected nine victories a year ago, which ranked third on the squad. After being moved around the lineup her first two seasons, Drabkova saw 22 matches of action at the No. 3 position 2009 Women s Season Outlook Karen Scida collected second-team All-SLC honors at No. 1 singles last year after posting a team-high 14 wins, including nine in league play. as a junior. The Prague, Czech Republic, native won five contests last spring and she could move down to either the No. 4 or 5 spot in her final year as a Roadrunner. Phillips began 2008 playing at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, but she ended the year in the No. 4 slot, where she recorded a 5-2 record. The Rochester, N.Y., native posted a career-best 12 wins in her second season, which was second best on the team, and she also went 5-5 in conference play. Dedering is penciled in at the No. 6 spot. The Stockholm, Sweden, native picked up seven wins in her inaugural campaign, including four at the No. 5 position. Ottenbreit, Silva and Springer not only will provide depth, but the three also will give Boisclair options throughout the bottom of the lineup. Silva has the potential to play as high as the No. 3 slot in her freshman season. Doubles Two of the team s three doubles pairings return intact after combining for 13 wins last spring. Dedering and Drabkova, who teamed up for a 5-1 overall record and perfect 4-0 mark in league play, are back at the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, Phillips and Wallin established themselves at the No. 3 position after pairing up for eight wins a year ago. They played in 20 matches and are the most experienced duo returning this season. At the No. 1 slot, Boisclair said Scida more than likely will team up with either Ottenbreit or Silva when the campaign kicks off in late January. Schedule UTSA is slated to play 23 matches, including a full ledger of 11 conference contests. The schedule features a dozen non-conference matches with the Roadrunners opening the year against SMU on Jan. 23. The SLC Tournament is scheduled for April on the campus of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. goutsa.com
