In fact, the Bears have played in the NCAA Championships in 10 of head coach Matt Knoll s 11 seasons at Baylor. The Bears had never been selected to the tournament prior to Knoll s arrival. The Bears are led by 11th-ranked Lars Poerschke, No. 19 Michal Kokta, No. 113 Dominique Mueller and No. 120 Matija Zgaga. Mueller, a freshman, and fellow freshman, Denes Lukacs, lead the team in singles wins, each with a 29-9 records record. Zgaga, a senior, and sophomore David Galic are the Bears highest ranked doubles duo at No. 25. They are 9-6 on the season, all coming in dual match play at the No. 1 spot. In addition, Galic and Poerschke are ranked No. 59 in doubles with a 5-1 mark while Kokta and Poerschke are No. 60 at 7-1. ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE... The 17th-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide (22-7) will be making its fifth NCAA Round of 16 appearance after upsetting No. 14 Duke in a thrilling 4-3 victory. Alabama had defeated East Tennessee State 4-2 in first round action. Junior Billy Mertz is the Crimson Tide s top-ranked player at No. 71 while senior Joseph Jung is No. 88. The doubles tandem of Dan Muikema and Mathieu Thibaudeau checks in at No. 23 in the Fila/ITA national rankings. BAYLOR VERSUS POSSIBLE OPPONENTS.. Alabama and Baylor have met on three previous occasions with Baylor winning all three contests (2000, 01, 03). Texas leads the series 38-11, however, Baylor has won eight straight. North Carolina State and Baylor have never met on the court. Baylor s record versus the bottom part of the bracket on BU s side: Illinois - BU leads the series 3-2 and has won two straight (2005, 07) Mississippi - Ole Miss leads 2-0 LSU - LSU leads 2-0, two teams have not met since 1991, and never since Coach Knoll became BU head coach. Ohio State - Series tied 1-1 (BU won 4-0 in 2004, OSU won4-2 in 2007). BAYLOR SCHEDULES THE BEST.. Head coach Matt Knoll feels that in order to be the best you need to schedule the best and he practices what he preaches. Of the Bears 25 regular season matches this season 18 of the were against teams selected to participate in this year s NCAA Championship (Duke, Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Pepperdine, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas A&M-CC, Texas Tech, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth). In fact, Baylor has played eight of the 15 other teams in the round of 16. All three of the Bears losses have come against teams in the round of 16 (#1 Georgia, #3 Ohio State, #19 Florida). BAYLOR TENNIS PROGRAMS AMONG NATION S ELITE Baylor s men s and women s tennis teams are among the nation s elite tennis programs. The Bears are one of only six universities that have both their men s and women s teams advance to the NCAA Championships round of 16. The other five programs include: Florida, Georgia, Notre Dame, Southern California, UCLA. BAYLOR QUICK NOTES... Baylor currently ranked No. 4...it is the ninth time this season the Bears have been ranked No. 4 and the 20th time in school history. Baylor has swept courts four, five and six 17 times this season and are 16-1 in those matches. That lone loss was at 15th-ranked Florida on Feb. 4. The Bears finished the 2007 season 16-0 at home. The Bears have lost only three matches this season (No. 15 Florida, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 1 Georgia). Baylor recently won its fifth-big 12 Championship title. The Bears have won six straight regular season Big 12 Championships and seven of the last eight. BU has now posted six undefeated Big 12 Conference seasons. Baylor was 8-0 in 2000 then posted four straight 7-0 records ( ) and finished with a 6-0 mark in 2007.

3 Texas (1997, 1999) and Texas A&M (2001) are the only other schools to post perfect conference seasons. Baylor won the 2007 Big 12 regular season title with a 5-2 win over Oklahoma. Baylor has lost the doubles point nine times this season and are 6-3 when losing doubles. The Bears have not been ranked lower than ninth nationally over the past five seasons. Baylor is (.910) over the past four seasons (27-2 in 2002; 28-2 in 2003; 32-2 in 2004; 33-1 in 2005 and 25-7 in 2006 and 26-3 so far this season). A Baylor player has earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors four of the eight weeks in Lars Poerschke has been honored twice (March 19, April 23) while Michal Kokta (March 5) and Matija Zgaga (April 9) received the distinction once each. Poerschke holds a 19-1 record in Big 12 regular season action. He was 7-0 in 2005 and repeated that mark in His lone loss came this season when Texas A&M s Connor Pollack posted a 6-7(5), 6-4, 10-7 victory at No. 2 singles. Senior Matija Zgaga ranks No. 3 in doubles (98) and No. 4 in singles (102) on BU s career list. With his victory over Texas Milan Mihailovic he became just the fourth Bear to crack the century mark, joining Benjamin Becker (141), Benedikt Dorsch (119) and Matias Marin (104). Senior Michal Kokta ranks No. 5 in singles (100), No. 4 in singles winning percentage at.781 (100-28), No. 9 in doubles wins (77) and No. 1 in doubles winning percentage (.794, 77-20) on BU s career list. With 97 career singles wins, junior Lars Poerschke sits at No. 7 on Baylor s career list. In addition, he ranks No. 6 on the school s doubles career wins chart with 80 and is No. 3 in career doubles winning percentage at.784 (80-22). Michal Kokta and Lars Poerschke became the program s alltime winningest doubles team with their win over Texas A&M s Bryan Wooten and Luka Ocvirk in the NCAA Championship second round. The tandem has posted 49 career wins which now ranks No. 1 for most wins by a doubles team, passing the Johann Jooste/David Hodge combo ( ). According to the most recent Fila/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team rankings released April 30, the Baylor men's tennis team is ranked No. 4 nationally. ITA Top 125 individual rankings released on April 30: Singles No. 11 Lars Poerschke (junior) No. 19 Michal Kokta (senior) No. 113 Dominik Mueller (freshman) No. 120 Matija Zgaga (senior) Doubles No. 25 Zgaga/David Galic No. 59 Galic/Poerschke No. 60 Kokta/Poerschke ALL REGION HONORS... According to the recently released, ITA Regional Awards Matt Knoll, Kyle Spencer and Michal Kokta were South Central award recipients. Knoll was honored for the fourth time as the region s coach of the year. He was also chosen in 2002, 03 and 05. With his selection as the region s assistant coach of the year, Kyle Spencer becomes the fourth Baylor assistant to receive the honor. He joins Kevin Kowalik (1998), Sam Winterbotham (2002) and Rob Cheyne (2005) on the list. Michal Kokta was named Farnsworth/ITA South Central Regional Senior Player of the Year, becoming just the second BU player to earn the honor. Benedikt Dorsch was the 2005 honoree. HEAD COACH MATT KNOLL... Head coach Matt Knoll is in his 11th season at the Bears helm. He has a career record of in 12 seasons as a head coach and is in his tenure with the Bears. Knoll owns an.820 winning percentage in his 11 seasons at Baylor. He has guided the Bears to seven Big 12 championships (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 & 2007), including six straight. Under his guidance the Bears have made 10 straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including the school s first NCAA Championship which the Bears won in Knoll has produced two NCAA singles champions as well, Benjamin Becker in 2004 and Benedikt Dorsch in YEAR-BY-YEAR UNDER KNOLL... The NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee recently selected 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams to participate in the 2007 NCAA Division I Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Georgia May Two Bears will participate in singles while one doubles tandem was selected. In singles, junior Lars Poerschke, ranked No. 11, is an automatic qualifier for the Bears and is seeded in the ninth-16th range. Poerschke owns a 25-8 overall record. Senior Michal Kokta, on the season and ranked No. 19 nationally, is an at-large participant. For the doubles teams, No. 25 David Galic and Matija Zgaga own a 9-6 overall record and are automatic qualifiers for Baylor and are the only doubles duo to appear in the selection for the Bears. Along with the prestige of receiving a top seeding in the tournament, players who are seeded automatically obtain All- American status. This marks Poerschke's third appearance at the NCAA Tournament and his second time to earn All-American in singles. Kokta also will compete in the tournament for the third time in singles action, while Zgaga will compete in doubles play for the fourth time. Zgaga was a two-time All-American when paired with Benedikt Dorsch. BIG 12 OF THE YEAR HONORS.. Baylor men s tennis took two of the league s top honors in Junior Lars Poerschke was named Big 12 Player of the Year and head coach Matt Knoll shared Coach of the Year kudos. Knoll has not been named the league s top coach five times (1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007).

6 ALL-BIG Two singles players and two doubles team were named All-Big 12 this season. In singles, Lars Poerschke, a unanimous selection, earned the distinction for the third time while Michal Kokta received his second award. The doubles duos of Poerschke/Kokta and Matija Zgaga/David Galic were two of six tandems honored. Poerschke and Kokta are three-time honorees while Zgaga has been recognized in doubles twice and Galic received his first league kudo. POSITION CHAMPIONS... Baylor players were named champions at four of the six singles position in Lars Poerschke was undefeated at No. 1, 5-0, Zgaga was perfect as well (6-0) at No. 4, freshman Dominik Mueller triumphed at No. 5 with a 5-1 mark and Denes Lukacs, a freshman, dominated at No. 6 at 6-0. ACADEMIC ALL-BIG Michal Kokta and Matt Brown were recently named Academic All-Big 12 by the conference office. Kokta was named to the first team for the second straight season while Brown was also a first team selection. Kokta, a senior finance and economics major, is currently ranked No. 20 nationally and is in singles and 16-9 in doubles this season. Brown, a sophomore from Chesham, England, is majoring in business and sports a singles mark and is in doubles. To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team s scheduled contests. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. BAYLOR BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK... The Bears claimed four out of eight Big 12 Player of the Week honors in Lars Poerschke has two selections while Michal Kokta and Matija Zgaga have each earned the honor once.
