The Paladins, winners of four straight, will attempt to keep pace behind league front runner Georgia Southern (4-1; 4-0 SoCon) by gunning for their third straight road victory of the 1999 campaign. Saturday's game will highlight Parents' Day at The Citadel. THE SERIES In a series that stretches back to 1913, Furman holds a advantage over The Citadel, and the Paladins enter Saturday's contest having claimed wins in three of the past four games against their oldest and foremost Southern Conference rival. The Bulldogs, however, prevailed last year, overcoming a 21-0 deficit to earn a victory in Greenville. In all games played in Charleston, Furman has posted a record versus The Citadel. Trailing 21-0 early in the second quarter following a 65-yard touchdown run and 52-yard touchdown reception by Furman's Des Kitchings, The Citadel scored twice in the second period to slice the Paladins' lead to After Jason Wells booted a 36-yard field goal with 11:26 left in the game to extend Furman's advantage to 24-13, the Bulldogs put together a pair of impressive scoring drives that decided the game. The four-game winning streak is the second longest run of success for a Bobby Johnson-coached Paladin squad. Last year Furman dropped its season opener to Clemson but then proceeded to win its next four games. In 1996, the Paladins posted six straight wins during one stretch on the way to a 9-4 finish and NCAA I-AA quarterfinal playoff finish. Counting a win over Chattanooga in the 1998 season finale, Furman has now won five of its last six games. FURMAN 2-0 VS. THE CITADEL IN CHARLES- TON UNDER BOBBY JOHNSON...Furman heads into Saturday's game against The Citadel riding a two-game winning streak in Charleston. 4 touchdowns. In addition, the Paladins claimed a decisive advantage in time of possession (38:38-21:22) and posted more snaps (75) than Appalachian State (71). The Paladins have now won the time of possession-total offense-offensive snaps statistical battle in each of its last three games. Last year Furman averaged only yards total offense per game, recorded fewer offensive snaps (665) than any other Southern Conference team, and finished last in the league in average time of possession (29:26). MORE OFFENSIVE NOTABLES...Another sign of Furman's improved offensive execution is evident in the Paladins' work on third and fourth down. A year ago Furman converted only 34.8% of its third down opportunities (49-of-141) to rank sixth in the Southern Conference. Through five games this year Furman has converted 44.9% of its third down situations (31-of-69), currently fourth best among conference schools. In fourth down situations, the Paladins currently lead the conference (8-of-11, 81.8%) after finishing seventh in that category a year ago (5-of-10, 50.0%). PALADIN OFFENSIVE FRONT FLEXING MUSCLE...Paving the way for Furman's offensive success this year has been excellent work by the Paladin offensive line, led by pre-season All- Southern Conference guard Ben Hall (Royston, Ga.). Hall, who has now started in 27 consecutive games, graded out 91.8% on 74 plays in the Paladins' win over Appalachian State on Saturday. His work against the Mountaineers was only part of what was an excellent overall performance by the Paladin offensive line, which included winning marks by all five starters. Rivaling Hall's quality play was junior tackle Josh Moore (Cross Hill, S.C.), who graded out a 1.93 on 69 plays. Sophomore center Chris Stewart (Palm Harbor, Fla.), who is mounting a strong bid for All- Southern Conference honors, posted a grade of 90.7% on 75 plays, and next was sophomore tackle Donnie Littlejohn (Gaffney, S.C.), who graded out 86.5% on 74 plays. Sophomore guard Marty Priore (Cincinnati, Ohio) rounded Furman's strong offensive line play with a winning grade of 84.9% on 73 snaps. DEFENSE TURNING THE CORNER...A year ago Furman's defense surrendered 25.7 points and yards per game, and faded noticeably down the stretch, yielding 31.0 points and yards/game over the final six outings (1-5). This year, Furman appears to have turned the corner defensively. Through five games (4-1), the Paladins are surrendering 14.0 points and yards per game, and Furman is doing it with some noticeable youth. Comprising the Paladins' twodeep defensive chart in Saturday's game against Appalachian State were four seniors, three juniors, 11 sophomores, and four freshmen. Furman Defense Comparison Category 5 Games Season Scoring Defense Rushing Defense Passing Defense Total Defense SUPER SAFETIES...To best gauge just how big a role Furman's starting safeties Walter Booth (Gainesville, Fla.) and John Keith (Newnan, Ga.) have played in the Paladins' current four-game winning streak, consider that Booth and Keith have accounted for seven of the Paladins' eight interceptions in those four contests, including six in the past two games. In Saturday's toasting of Appalachian State, Booth tied a Furman single game record (shared with three others) with three interceptions and was named Sports Network National Defensive Player-ofthe-Week, only a week after registering a game clinching pickoff in the Paladins' win over Western Carolina in Cullowhee. Keith, meanwhile, was named Southern Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Week after tallying 12 tackles and a pair of interceptions in the win over Western Carolina. INTERCEPTION, INC...In registering three interceptions in Saturday's win over Appalachian State, Furman posted an outstanding follow-up performance to its work two weeks ago when the Paladins picked off Western Carolina quarterback Shawn Snyder four times in a Paladin win in Cullowhee. That's seven interceptions in the past two games for Furman and eight on the season. Last year, the Paladins totaled 12 pickoffs in 11 games. KEITH COMING UP BIG...After an injury plagued 1998 season, senior All-Southern Conference free safety John Keith (Newnan, Ga.) has assumed the much needed role of leader of Furman's defense in 1999, and judging by Furman's defensive success thus far, Keith's presence has been huge. Selected by Southern Conference head coaches as the league's pre-season defensive player-of-the-year, Keith fashioned a solid preseason, making a successful move from strong safety to free safety. In the Paladins' 52-6 win over William & Mary on Sept. 18, Keith tallied five tackles and an interception. In limited action in Furman's 58-0 rout of VMI three weeks ago, Keith notched three tackles and a tackle-for-loss. In the Paladins' win over Western Carolina on Oct. 2, Keith earned league defensive player-ofthe-week accolades after notching 12 tackles, a tackle-for-loss, and two interceptions the 10th and 11th interceptions of his fine career. Keith's first pickoff halted a Western Carolina scoring threat the Furman 26, and his second pickoff, at the Catamount 44, set up Furman's first touchdown of the game. In Saturday's upset of nationally third-ranked Appalachian State, the Paladin senior registered a squad high 10 tackles in helping pace a solid Paladin defensive effort. An outstanding tackler, Keith recorded a career high 19 tackles in Furman's 1998 season opener against Clemson, but late in the Paladins' third game (34-24 win over Samford), he sustained a deep sprain in his right foot, which effectively sidelined him for the next three games and limited his effectiveness the rest of the season. Still, he tallied 56 tackles and earned Furman's Best Defensive Back Award. Forced to sit out spring practice after undergoing post-season surgery, Keith serves as a team co-captain this season. Despite the injury plagued 1998 campaign, Keith has totaled 224 tackles and 11 interceptions in his career. One of his nine pickoffs includes a school record 99-yard return in a Furman win over Chattanooga in the 1997 season finale. GROUND ATTACK GETTING IT DONE...Coming into Saturday's game against Furman, Appalachian State led the Southern Conference in rushing defense, surrendering only 2.6 yards/rush and 98.0 yards/game. Appalachian State left Paladin Stadium with a loss and ranked third in the league in rushing defense (138.4 yards/game) thanks, in large measure, to Furman's ground attack, which ripped the Mountaineers for 300 yards on 63 attempts (4.8 yards/ rush) and five touchdowns. The fine work turned in by Furman's ground attack against Appalachian State continued an impressive string of rushing performances the Paladins have registered this season. In its last four games, Furman has totaled 1,383 yards (346.8 yards/game) and 23 touchdowns via the rush. In the win over William & Mary on Sept. 18, Furman rolled up 509 yards rushing, only 12 yards shy of the school's single game rushing record. In the thrashing of VMI a week later, nine Paladin ball carriers combined to rush for 381 yards, the second most productive rushing day for Furman football in Bobby Johnson's fiveplus seasons as head coach of the Paladins. Two weeks ago, the Paladin ground assault proved to be the deciding factor in the fourth quarter, producing two touchdowns in a win over Western Carolina in Cullowhee. Through five games Furman has combined to score 24 rushing touchdowns, and the Paladins are averaging a healthy rushing yards/ game (5.8 yards/rush) heading into this Saturday's game against The Citadel. Last year Furman scored 24 rushing touchdowns all season and averaged only yards/game via its ground attack. The results through five games have been conclusive as the Paladins are averaging a heady yards rushing per game and 5.8 yards per rush thanks, in large measure, to Ivory's team leading 619 rushing yards (123.8 ypg) and eight rushing touchdowns (6.5 ypc). In Saturday's dismantling of Appalachian State, Ivory ran like a thoroughbred, totaling 27 carries for a game high 135 yards and two touchdowns while also breaking 13 tackles. His performance against the Mountaineers followed an impressive outing against Western Carolina two weeks ago when he rushed for 150 yards and a pair of scores, including a game clinching 43- yard scoring in the fourth quarter. Ivory ran for a season high 151 yards and a touchdown in the Paladins' 52-6 rout of William & Mary on Sept. 18. Quickly establishing himself as one of the Southern Conference's top running backs, Ivory appears to be a prime candidate to become Furman's first 1,000-yard rusher since the 1992 season when Carl Tremble ran for 1,555 yards as a senior. A year ago Ivory began the season in fine fashion, working at fullback and rushing for 202 yards and two touchdowns in the Paladins' first two games before ankle injuries slowed his production. He finished the year with 406 yards and four touchdowns (5.1 ypa). He posted a career-best 161-yard, two-touchdown outing as a fullback in the Paladins' win over South Carolina State in DES KITCHINGS: PRODUCTION VIA THE RUSH...For the fourth straight game, Furman senior wide receiver Des Kitchings (Wagener, S.C.) again showcased why he is one of the most versatile players in NCAA I-AA football. In addition to catching four passes for 67 yards and returning two kickoffs for 58 yards in Furman's win over Appalachian State, Kitchings ran twice for 20 yards, including a key 18-yard pickup on a reverse on what proved to be Furman's game winning touchdown drive in the third quarter. Kitchings' performance against Appalachian State followed a fine outing in the Paladins' triumph over Western Carolina on Oct. 2. In that contest he burned the Catamounts through the air, catching six passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, and on the ground, rushing four times for 27 yards and for what proved to be the game winning touchdown, a 12-yard burst around left end in the fourth quarter after lining up as a tailback in the Paladin backfield. Kitchings has now rushed for 191 yards and four touchdowns this season. That work includes an 11-yard touchdown run against VMI (58-0 win), in a game in which he saw only one quarter of action, and a pair of touchdown runs off reverses covering 51 and 34 yards against William & Mary (52-6 win). In the William & Mary game, Kitchings became the first wide receiver in Furman history to rush for over 100 yards when he ran for 117 yards. Counting a 65-yard scoring run on a reverse last year against The Citadel, Kitchings has now rushed 32 times for 396 yards (12.4 ypc) and five touchdowns in his career. DES KITCHINGS: PRODUCTION THROUGH THE AIR...In registering a career high seven receptions for 105 yards in the Paladins' season opener against Elon on Sept. 4, senior flanker Des Kitchings placed his name on Furman's career receptions and receiving yards charts. The squad's fastest player ( yard dash), Kitchings, who caught four passes for 67 yards in Furman's win over Appalachian State on Saturday, now has 91 receptions for 1,359 yards in his career. The 91 catches places him in a tie for eighth place on Furman's career receptions ledger, and his 1,359 yards in receptions ranks 10th in school history. Kitchings' eight career touchdown catches ranks eighth all-time. Following Kitchings' 93-yard return in the season opener, Elon, William & Mary, VMI, and Western Carolina employed pooch and line drive, bouncing kickoffs to deny Kitchings return opportunities. Consequently, through five games Kitchings has posted only four kickoff returns and is not ranked among league leaders due to the lack of returns. His 39.5 yards/return average blows away the current league leader, East Tennessee State's Terrence Sims (27.2 yards/return). Kitchings' sports a fine 27.4 yards/ return average on 25 career returns, two of which he has returned for scores. WELLS ON THE CHARTS...Furman senior placekicker Jason Wells (Lawton, Okla.), a preseason All-Southern Conference selection, is poised to leave his mark on the school's kick scoring and overall scoring charts. Wells' career numbers heading into this Saturday's game against The Citadel include 32x54 FGs (.592) and 122x127 PATs (.960). With seven sacks in the first five games, Furman is only two shy of matching last year's sack total with six regular season games remaining on the schedule. SPERLING GAINS FIRST START...True

6 Freshman defensive tackle LeBryan Sperling (Decatur, Ga.) gained the first start of his career Saturday in the Paladins' win over Appalachian State. Sperling, who recorded one tackle in the win over the Mountaineers, has 10 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and two sacks through five games. MORE FRESHMAN IMPACT ON DL...Although he was scratched from the starting lineup against Appalachian State after injuring his shoulder in Furman's win over Western Carolina two weeks ago, true freshman rush end Eddie Overdyke (Lilburn, Ga.) still registered a pair of tackles and a tackle-for-loss in the win over the Mountaineers. Overdyke, who in all has earned starts in three games, heads into this Saturday's contest against The Citadel with 14 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a sack. NOTING OTHER PALADIN FRESHMEN... Redshirt freshman quarterback Billy Napier (Chatsworth, Ga.) has been impressive in two appearances thus far this season. In his first game action as a Paladin, Napier rushed three times for 19 yards, including a 15-yard scoring run, in the Paladins' 52-6 rout of William & Mary. The next week Napier put together another impressive outing by completing 8-of-13 passes for 108 yards and rushing for 28 yards on nine carries in three quarters of play in the Paladins' 58-0 rout of VMI. For his play against VMI, Napier was named Southern Conference Freshman-ofthe-Week. Freshman split end James Thomas (Marianna, Fla.) has registered quality playing time in Furman's wide receiver corps this fall and has two catches for 31 yards in five games. DEREK RUSSELL: TD MAN...Junior fullback Derek Russell (Austell, Ga.) ranks as Furman's fifth leading rusher through five games, but his six rushing touchdowns trails only tailback Louis Ivory's team leading eight rushing scores. HOLDING ON TO THE FOOTBALL...Furman has suffered only two turnovers (1 fumble, 1 interception) in its last four games (16 quarters), and the Paladins currently rank second in the Southern Conference in turnover margin (+1.80), with 14 turnovers gained and five lost. KEEPING THE FLAGS IN THE POCKET...Furman is the least penalized team in the Southern Conference heading into this Saturday's game against The Citadel. Through five games, the Paladins have been penalized 26 times for 202 yards. The Citadel is the second least penalized team in the league (29 penalties, 219 yards). HOLMES RETURNS...Sophomore nose guard Jarrod Holmes (Powder Springs, Ga.) saw his first action as a Paladin Saturday against Appalachian State after missing almost the entire pre-season and the Paladins' first four games due to a hamstring tear sustained over the summer. A transfer from SMU, Holmes is now penciled in as a backup to starting nose guard Ryan Spencer (Clover, S.C.), who has registered 13 tackles in five games. MARION MARTIN: ATHLETIC, ACADEMIC STAR...Starting weak side linebacker Marion Martin (Columbia, S.C.) is an outstanding student on Furman's football team who is contributing in a major way on the field. In five starts, Martin has tallied 24 tackles and three pass deflections, including one on a bone crushing hit on William & Mary wide receiver Chris Rosier. In Furman's win over Western Carolina, Martin recorded five tackles and had two pass deflections. A chemistry major, Martin sports a 3.89 GPA and this summer teamed up with university professor Dr. Lon Knight in pioneer chemistry research known as "Mass Selected Matrix Isolation." REMARKABLE STUART RENTZ...In rushing for 144 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Furman's 58-0 rout of VMI, senior tailback Stuart Rentz (Pickens, S.C.) posted the fifth 100-yard rushing performance of his career, which now includes two 100-yard outings against VMI. Rentz's solid work against the Keydets featured a career long touchdown run covering 55 yards. Holder of a 3.90 GPA and a double major in Spanish and history, Rentz has now rushed for 1,259 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career and has averaged 6.2 yards per carry. As a freshman in 1996, Rentz, a walk-on and three-time member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, posted two 100-yard rushing performances, including a 125-yard effort in a win over Western Carolina. BUSSARD, FRIERSON OUT FOR SEASON...Nose guard/defensive tackle Ryan Bussard (Marietta, Ga.) and linebacker Sterling Frierson (Woodrow, S.C.), both redshirt freshmen, will miss the remainder of the 1999 season due to injuries, according to head athletic trainer Brian Reese. The culprit in Bussard's case is slow rehabilitation associated with a posterior cartilage tear in his left shoulder, a problem that will likely require surgery. Frierson, meanwhile, will soon undergo surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament sustained in the Paladins' win over Western Carolina on Oct. 2. ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS...Furman's recent 58-0 win over VMI on Sept. 25 forced some research into the school's football record book, and the notable team milestones achieved by the Paladins include: The 58-0 victory over VMI marked the biggest Southern Conference win (margin of victory) in Furman football history. The previous biggest margin had been 49 points, which Furman posted in shutouts of VMI (49-0) and Appalachian State (49-0) in Furman reached the 50-point plateau for a second straight game, a feat that had never before been accomplished in the history of Furman football (94 seasons, 889 games). The 58 points were the most ever scored by a Bobby Johnson-coached Furman team and the most by the Paladins since the 1989 season when Furman tallied 59 points in a win over Presbyterian. The 58 points were the most scored against a Southern Conference opponent since 1987 when Furman defeated The Citadel in Charleston. Furman's 110 points in wins over William & Mary and VMI marked the second highest consecutive games points total in program history, trailing only the 111 points Furman posted in back-to-back wins during the 1920 season (42-3 win over Oglethorpe and 69-0 win over Wofford). The shutout was the first by Furman since the Paladins blanked Wofford 38-0 during the 1995 season. Furman's 546-yard offensive performance against VMI marked its second straight 500-yard outing (542 vs. William & Mary, Sept. 18). Prior to the William & Mary and VMI games, Furman had last posted back-to-back 500-yard offensive performances during the 1990 season when the Paladins rolled up 565 yards in a win over The Citadel and 586 yards in a thrashing of Eastern Kentucky. VMI's four first downs tied a Furman opponent record (shared by four other teams) for fewest first downs in a game. The Keydets didn't post their first first down until the third quarter. FURMAN INDUCTS 1O INTO HALL-OF- FAME SEPT Former football standouts Bruce Gheesling '82 of Covington, Ga., David Charpia '84 of Greenville, and Gene Reeder '86 of Woodruff were among 10 greats who were inducted into the Furman University Athletic Hallof-Fame in ceremonies Sept. 25. Also inducted were Rushia Brown '94 (women's basketball), Bill Dimitrouleas '73 (track & field), Cathy Frohnheiser '94 (softball), Russ Hunt '73 (men's basketball), Janey Strause-McKenna '87 (women's tennis), and Forrest Wakefield '36 (honorary). BOBBY JOHNSON: YEAR SIX...The 1999 season marks Furman head coach Bobby Johnson's sixth year at the helm of the Paladin program and 22nd season of service to the university. After suffering through a 3-8 season in 1994 (the program's first losing season since 1979 and worst record since 1972), Furman rebounded in 1995 to finish 6-5. A year later Johnson, a Columbia native and 1973 Clemson graduate, directed the Paladins to a 9-4 record and into the NCAA I-AA playoffs the program's first playoff appearance since Furman went 7-4 in 1997 and 5-6 a year ago. Johnson's four-year head coaching record is (.548), and his last four teams have combined to post a slate (.608). Against NCAA I-AA competition, Furman teams under Johnson's direction have gone (.586). 8 ELON 24, FUIRMAN 22 GREENVILLE (Sept. 4, 1999) The NCAA I-AA independent Elon Fightin' Christians built a two-touchdown lead and held off a second half Furman rally to post a upset win over the Paladins in the 1999 season opener for both teams. Trailing 24-10, Furman sliced Elon's lead to following a 1-yard touchdown plunge by fullback Derek Russell with 1:38 left in the third quarter. Furman struck for another touchdown on the final play of the third quarter when junior defensive end Hershal Pleasant scooped up an Elon fumble and returned it 30 yards for a score, but the Paladins' failure to convert a two-point pass play allowed Elon to maintain a lead The Fightin' Christians' margin appeared to be in jeopardy in the fourth quarter when Furman drove 62 yards in six plays, but the scoring opportunity slipped away when Jerome Nelson pounced on a fumbled Paladin handoff at the Elon 11. Furman had two other chances to grab a fourth quarter lead, but one ended with a punt from the Elon 38, and the other one, which followed a second Fightin' Christian fumble at its own 29-yard line, ended when Jason Wells missed a 36-yard field goal with only 38 seconds left in the game. In claiming the first win by a Southern Conference team in Williamsburg since 1980 and handing William & Mary its worst home loss since 1958, Furman posted the second best single game rushing mark in school history, trailing only the 521 rushing yards the Paladins rolled up in a 55-7 win over Davidson in Tailback Louis Ivory spearheaded Furman's potent ground game, rushing for 151 yards and a touchdown, and flanker Des Kitchings added 117 yards and two touchdowns both on reverses to become the first Furman wide receiver in history to rush for over 100 yards in a game. Quarterback Justin Hill added 94 yards on the ground and a touchdown run covering 11 yards. Furman, which built a 24-6 halftime lead, put the game away with a 35-yard touchdown run by Ivory in the third period, and added three more scores in the fourth quarter, including one by redshirt freshman quarterback Billy Napier, who registered his first collegiate action. The loss was the worst home defeat suffered by William & Mary since the Tribe's 55-6 loss to West Virginia during the 1958 season. In earning its 18th-straight win over VMI and claiming the shutout, the program's first since a 38-0 blanking of Wofford in 1995, Furman posted back-to-back 50-point performances for the first time in school history and scored more points in two games than any other Furman team since The Paladins downed William & Mary 52-6 on Sept. 18. Leading the offensive barrage was sophomore tailback Louis Ivory, who rushed six times for 85 yards and scored three touchdowns covering 25, 42, and 6 yards in the game's first quarter. Ivory, whose night included only one quarter of work, gave way to senior Stuart Rentz, who led all rushers with 144 yards on 17 carries. Rentz also scored two touchdowns, including a career best 55-yarder, to further spark a Paladin ground game that posted 381 yards and eight touchdowns. Redshirt freshman quarterback Billy Napier also benefitted from Furman's early outburst, as he directed the Paladin offense over the final three quarters, completing 8-of-13 passes for 108 yards while adding 28 more on the ground. Furman limited VMI to only four first downs and 103 total yards.
