THE TIPOFF... Presbyterian College begins the season with a two-game road trip meetings at UNC Wilmington and East Carolina. The Lady Blue Hose, who are in the fi rst-year of the Division I phase, have no prior history with either school. Beginning on Friday night against the Seahawks, the Lady Blue Hose will face 13 teams that they have no prior history against. The following is a preview of the season for UNC Wilmington and ECU: UNC Wilmington (8-23, 3-15 Colonial Athletic Conference Records): UNCP s Victoria Willis scored a team-high 14 points but the Braves would fall to UNC Wilmington, 66-40, on Tuesday night at the Trask Coliseum in the exhibition opener for both schools. UNCP shot only 34.9 percent on the night converting only 15 of 43 fi eld goals on the night. The Lady Seahawks shot a 44.4 clip making 24 shots out of 54 attempts. Wilmington s Greta Luksyte led all players with 20 points while Sahsha Taylor earned a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Natalie Ray led the Lady Braves in rebounds with fi ve with Pembroke tallying a total of 32. The Lady Seahawks earned 36 boards as a team while also totaling 12 assists. UNCW led by just two points, 15-13, with 12:13 remaining in the fi rst period before the Seahawks pulled away to a cushion at intermission. UNCP was outscored in the second half before fi nally falling to Wilmington. The Seahawks enter the season looking to improve on an 8-23 record, which included a 3-15 in the Colonial Athletic Conference. Battling injuries throughout the seaon, Head Coach Ann Hancock was interviewed prior to the season, giving this outlook on her team: Q: You bring back two four-year members of the program in seniors Stephanie Fernald and Becca Papach. What does that leadership mean to a team that features seven underclassmen? A: Stephanie Fernald and Becca Papach have provided tremendous leadership on and off the fl oor since last season. It started as soon as the season ended and has continued into the preseason. They lead by words and action. I think this is crucial for our underclassmen to see what is expected of them and how hard they must work in order to be successful. Q: You welcome in a talented quintet of freshman for the season. He can be reached in his offi ce at , via at jccole@presby.edu or by cell phone at What kind of impact will this group have this season? A: This freshmen class has the potential to be one of the best classes I have had in my eight years. They are fortunate to have tremendous leaders as upperclassmen to show them the way. This class is very versatile with more overall size than we have had in the recent past. I expect they will challenge and push the returning players for playing time. Not only are they talented on the court, but they also bring a youthful exuberance. They have fi t in well with both the players and the coaching staff. Q: You welcome back a pair of starters in junior Sahsha Taylor and sophomore Greta Luksyte. What are you looking for from that duo this season? A: Sahsha and Greta are our two leading returning scorers from last season, so we will need them to be able to put the ball in the basket for us. I do believe that having Stephanie and Candace back will make it easier for Sahsha and Greta to do what they do best. Sahsha can play inside or out and is an aggressive rebounder. Greta will be able to penetrate and shoot from the outside, because defenses will not be able to focus solely on stopping her from the perimeter and Sahsha inside. East Carolina (19-14, 11-5 Conference USA Records): The Lady Pirates 19 wins was the most in the program since the season, while the team s 11 league wins was a program best, allowing ECU to earn a bye in the C-USA Tournament for the fi rst time. If the past is any indication, the Lady Pirates should have a very successful season, but they will have a lot to live up to this season, as they were tabbed 3rd in this year s preseason poll, receiving two fi rst place votes. ECU has the tools necessary for another winning season this year, returning all-conference player Jasmine Young and C-USA Tournament MVP LaCoya Terry. Also returning for the Lady Pirates are fellow juniors Gabriela Husarova and Impris Manning, both of whom saw a lot of playing time last season, and each started a handful of games. This years lone senior, Nicole Days, will look to fi ll the void of departed senior Cherie INTERVIEW POLICIES Requests to interview coach Jessica Vanco or other members of the Lady Blue Hose women s basketball team should be made at least 24 hours in advance to Jon Cole in the PC Sports Information Offi ce. Requests will be met based on the players class and practice schedules. Mills, but will have sophomore Lauren Cochran and three incoming freshmen to help her out. With the bulk of last seasons championship team back, the Lady Pirates are hoping to repeat as Conference USA champs. The Pirates return three starters in the backcourt once again this season, including Preseason All-Conference USA guard Jasmine Young. In her sophomore season, Young moved into fi fth all-time in three-point fi eld goals made (94), sixth in assists (316), and 10th in steals (156). Young also fi nished the season ranked third in assists (5.75) and seventh in steals (2.25) in C-USA action. She racked up on post-season honors in C-USA as she was named to the second-team, All-Defensive team, and the All-Tournament team. Joining her again this season will be the reigning C-USA Tournament MVP, LaCoya Terry, who also begins her junior season with the Lady Pirates. In addition to her MVP honors, Terry fi nished the year ranked eighth in fi eld goal percentage (.465) and in assists (3.94) in league play. She also became just the 16th Lady Pirate to tally 30 points in a single game. Add to the mix Impris Manning and you have three veteran starters for ECU this fall. Junior Gabriela Husarova and sophomore Shana Franks also return for the Lady Pirates. Husarova, who started in 10 contests last season, is a valuable guard/forward combo for the Lady Pirates off the bench. Entering into the mix this season is freshman Allison Spivey, from Asheboro, N.C. With Cherie Mills, last seasons top scorer and rebounder, gone, the Lady Pirates will look to senior Nicole Days to anchor the frontcourt this season. She enters her fi nal season as the teams top returning rebounder, pulling down 7.1 a game a year ago. Days fi n- ished last season averaging 5.1 points, playing in all 33 contests and starting in 32 games, averaging 25.0 minutes per contest. Also returning for ECU is Lauren Cochran. Cochran showed sparks last season of how great of a player she can be as a Lady Pirate. She notched her fi rst career double-double against Rice, with a career-high 14 points and 10 rebounds. She returns as the teams top shot blocker, swatting 17 last season. 2

4 LADY BLUE HOSE PREPARING FOR DIVISION I SEASON TOUGH SLATE: PC has reason to be excited for the upcoming season, not only because of the potential this particular team has, but also because their schedule will feature fi ve teams that competed in a postseason tournament last season. Four of those teams: Georgia, West Virginia, UNC Asheville, and East Carolina, competed in the NCAA Women s Tournament and future Big South Conference rival High Point was selected to the NIT. The schedule will also feature teams from two particular conferences, West Virginia from the Big East and Georgia from the SEC, that have rich traditions of making substantial runs at the national title. With the release of the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 last week, two PC opponents appeared favorably. December 15th offers up the potential for the fi rst D-I match-up against a ranked opponent, as West Virginia currently ranks 23rd. Georgia, who the Lady Blue Hose play on Jan. 2, opens the season ranked 10th. FINDING LINEUP CONSISTENCY: Following a season that featured 11 different starting lineups, the Lady Blue Hose open the season with a clean bill of health. Guard Amy Jones, who appeared in 13 games before suffering a foot injury, has completed a solid pre-season where she looks to return to form where she was averaging 17.6 ppg. before the injury. Junior Sharie Hopkins played in the second half of the season, scoring 163 points (11.6 ppg.), while starting in 11 of the fi nal 14 contests. Bridget Takach, who started all 28 games, and Taylor Price (25 starts) anchored the PC lineup throughout last season. At the point, Takach fi nished year by scoring 286 points, grabbing 114 rebounds and dishing out 101 assists She became just the 10th player in program history to record 100+ assists during a season. As for Price, in the post she tied the team-high in blocks (22). Price joined teammate Sharie Hopkins as the only two players to recorded a double-double when she managed 11 points and 10 rebounds against Mars Hill (1/6/07). Redshirt freshman Kristin Kidd will be the addition to the PC lineup for this season, who plays at the three guard position. Her season was lost last year due to a foot injury. BRIGHT FUTURE: Jessica Vanco s recruiting class brings fi ve new players into fold for Presbyterian. A host of freshmen, including Katlin Moore (5-7, Fort Mill, S.C.), Erica Deahl (5-10, Lexington, S.C.) and Erin Doherty (5-7, Denver, Colo.) will compete for time in the backcourt and add much needed depth. A pair of freshman will battle for playing time at the forward position. Chelsea Wright, one of the most athletic players on the team, will give PC some much needed versatility and depth in that position. A fl uid player with quick moves to the basket, Wright has unlimited potential. Liz Blue, a 6-foot-1 freshman forward from Marietta, Ga., will also get her share of playing time for PC. COACHING STAFF SHIFTS: Head Coach Jessica Vanco guided a Presbyterian College offense that generated four double-digit scorers. Without the services of Amy Jones, Sharie Hopkins and Morgan Johnson for a complete season, her squad managed to fi nd balance and offensive consistency by using a variety of offensive sources. Holly Brooks is in her second season with the Lady Blue Hose after joining the Women s Basketball staff last year after serving as an assistant coach at Concord University during the season. During Coach Brooks fi rst year at PC, she was in charge of guard play and offense. For the season her role has changed. Brooks will be working with the post players, the defensive side of the game and guard/forward rebounding. Presbyterian College women s basketball head coach, Jessica Vanco, announced the hiring of Dionna McPhatter as an assistant coach during the summer of McPhatter s main on-court responsibilities with the Lady Blue Hose will be guard play and the offensive scheme.
