5 34 Renaldo Balkman F, 6-8, 210, So., Tampa, Fla SEC All-Freshman Team 30 His strengths are speed, quickness, athleticism, spontaneity, ability to run the court, a good nose for the game and a good sense of the game. These are all attributes that are God-given and very difficult to teach. He has improved his shooting and that s important. The fact he was out for eight weeks with surgery on his left thumb made things more difficult but he s worked hard to catch up. I like Renaldo s dedication to improving and his commitment to our team s goals. - USC Head Coach Dave Odom Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct 3FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

7 32 54 John Chappell C, 6-10, 247, Sr., New Berlin, Wis All-District III Academic All-American John has developed a fair amount each and every year he s been here. He has now put himself in a position to have his very best year because he s stronger, quicker and more athletic. His skills have improved, but I think the biggest change in him is that John is more confident in his abilities and his ability to help others. He should be one of our best rebounders, one of our best post defenders, and an effective inside scorer as long as he doesn t try to manufacture points. - USC Head Coach Dave Odom Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct 3FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg TOTAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

11 31 Josh Gonner G, 6-3, 182, Sr., Ft. Worth, Texas (Paschal High/Hutchinson CC) 36 Josh had an excellent first year here at Carolina. The thing that surprised me most about him was that he played basically unafraid, and I like that. He shot the ball incredibly well in streaks last year, but this year he has to work on shooting the ball consistently, improve his ability to handle the basketball in traffic and his assist to turnover ratio. I don t know that he ll ever be a creative passer, but he should be a very effective passer. He must work to be more committed defensively. - USC Head Coach Dave Odom Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct 3FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

17 1 Tré Kelley G, 6-0, 182, So., Washington, D.C. (Dunbar High) 42 Tré had a really fine freshman year. He primarily played a backup role but the further we went into the season the more he was in there at crunch time. He came a long way as a player from the early part of his freshman year to tournament time. We look for him to improve his shooting percentage, as he has been working on his shot in the off-season. We also look for him to be more of a leader. I m very pleased with what he accomplished thus far so we re going to ask more of him and he ll be given the first opportunity to take over the reigns of leadership at the point guard position. - USC Head Coach Dave Odom Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct 3FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA

19 44 21 Tarence Kinsey G, 6-7, 184, Jr., Tampa, Fla. (Jefferson High) 2003 Guardians Classic MVP Tarence had a much better year last season than he did his first year; still I think he can be better. I was very happy with him through the first 14 or 15 games, but then I thought he began to tire. As we got into league play the games got harder and his lack of strength and endurance came into play. This summer we asked him to get bigger and stronger, and be more durable so he can last 30 plus games. I think he s done that. He s an aggressive offensive player, who should get better defensively. Tarence looks to score on each trip and he should be a real factor for us at one of the wing positions. He s got the ability to be as good as he wants to be if he ll continue to be serious about his game and develop. He s one player who can take the ball to the basket and shoot the ball from a distance. He must exhibit the same sense of purpose on the defensive side. - USC Head Coach Dave Odom Year GP GS Min Avg FG FGA Pct 3FG FGA Pct FT FTA Pct Off Def Tot Avg PF FO Ast TO Blk Stl Pts Avg TOTAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
