1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #16 THIS WEEK S GAME The Cardinals will shoot for their third postseason appearance in six seasons and look to tie the franchise mark for wins in a season this week when they host the San Francisco 49ers. This week s game features two teams that have combined for 21 wins so far this season and with San Francisco (11-4) securing a playoff spot with their victory over the Falcons in Week 16, the Cardinals will need a win and help from the Buccaneers to punch their postseason ticket. To have a shot at the postseason, the Cardinals are first going to have to defeat a division opponent that features the NFL s 3 rd ranked defense and 3 rd ranked rushing attack. Arizona counters with the NFL s top run defense and 6 th overall defense and an offense that has been hard to stop at home over the second half of the season. Arizona has won 7 of its last 8 games and has been particularly impressive at home. The Cards have won 4 straight and 6 of 7 home games. For the year, Arizona is averaging 27.6 points per game at University of Phoenix Stadium while allowing just 17.0 points per game. Arizona has outscored its last two opponents at home by the combined score of Last week, Arizona secured its first 10-win season since 2009 when they snapped the Seahawks franchise record 14-game home win streak with a victory. The Cards defense suffocated the Seattle offense, holding them to a season-low 10 points while allowing just 192 total yards. Seattle QB Russell Wilson was handed his first career home loss while Cardinals QB Carson Palmer stepped up in the clutch with a 31-yard game-winning TD pass to WR Michael Floyd. For the Cards to get in they need: AZ win + NO loss or tie OR AZ tie + NO loss If so, the Cardinals would enter as the #6 seed and hit the road for a Wild Card game next weekend. Where could they play? Arizona would play in Philadelphia if the Eagles beat the Cowboys on Sunday night. If the Cowboys win on Sunday night, the Cardinals would travel to Dallas if Green Bay wins in Chicago on Sunday or Chicago if the Bears defeat the Packers. The 49ers could clinch the NFC West with a win at AZ and a Seattle home loss to the Rams. If that happens AND the Panthers lose or tie at home vs. Atlanta, the 49ers clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The loss dropped Arizona to 3-3 while San Fran improved to 4-2 with its third straight victory. WR Larry Fitzgerald, a game-time decision with a hamstring injury, finished with 117 yards including a 75-yard TD reception. Neither the Cardinals nor the 49ers offense picked up a first down on any of their first four possessions. However, two of Arizona s ended with Carson Palmer INTs that set up San Fran deep in AZ territory. The first by S Eric Reid was returned to the AZ7 while the second by CB Carlos Rogers was returned to the AZ11. In both cases the Cardinals defense came up big, limiting SF to two Phil Dawson FGs that put the hosts up 6-0. Late in the first, the Cards quickly took the lead when Palmer connected with Fitzgerald on a 75-yard scoring pass that was Arizona s longest since San Fran was on the verge of more points on its next drive but on 2 nd -n-goal from the AZ2, LB Karlos Dansby tipped Colin Kaepernick s pass and it was INT d at the goal line by S Yeremiah Bell. The downside was the Cards had to take over inside their own 1 and 3 plays later Palmer was sacked in the end zone for a safety by rookie LB Corey Lemonier. On the 2 nd play after the free kick, Kaepernick & TE Vernon Davis connected on a deep TD down the middle that covered 61 yards. The Cardinals struck right back on a 53-yard completion to WR Brittan Golden who was called up from the practice squad earlier in the week. On the next play rookie RB Andre Ellington ran it in from 15 yards out to trim San Fran s lead to Late in the 2 nd quarter, Davis capped his big 1 st half ( TDs) with a 35-yard TD from Kaepernick that made it at intermission. On their opening drive of the 3 rd quarter, Palmer capped a 9-play, 61-yard drive with 10-yard TD toss to Michael Floyd that made it when the 2-point try failed. After a 49er punt, Arizona took over at its own 20 and in 10 plays moved to the SF31 seemingly poised to take the lead. But after catching an 8-yard pass, Fitzgerald fumbled and SF recovered at its own 11. That turning point was followed by an even more pivotal San Fran drive that covered 89 yards in 18 plays and chewed 9:32 off the clock. RB Kendall Hunter ended it with his 6-yard run that put SF up with 6:35 left. Any Arizona comeback hopes were dashed on the 2 nd play of the ensuing drive when RB Alfonso Smith lost a fumble at the AZ31. The Niners turned than into a 44-yard Dawson FG that provided the game s final points. CARDINALS ERS Team Qtr. 4 LAST WEEK S GAME CARDINALS 17, Seahawks 10 December 22, 2013 CenturyLink Field (68,266) The Cardinals entered their Week 16 game at Seattle knowing a loss would eliminate them from playoff consideration after Carolina won earlier in the afternoon. Standing in their way was a Seahawks team with the NFL s best record (12-2) looking to clinch the division title and home field throughout the playoffs. The Seahawks (who defeated AZ 58-0 a year before in Seattle) had the NFL s #1 ranked defense and had not lost at home in two years (a streak of 14 games) and a starting QB (Russell Wilson) who had never lost at home. But on the strength of an incredible defensive effort, the Cards overcame 4 turnovers and came up with a clutch late touchdown to record the important victory. It was Arizona s 7 th win in 8 games and upped their record to The D allowed Seattle just 192 net yards and 10 first downs while forcing 9 punts. It held Wilson to just 108 passing yards while sacking him 4 times and all-pro RB Marshawn Lynch to 71 yards in 18 rushes (7-11 in the 2 nd half). Arizona got the ball to start the game and had a great opportunity to strike first when Carson Palmer hit WR Brittan Golden on a 63-yard pass play to the SEA13. However, on 3 rd -n-2 at the 5, Palmer s pass into the end zone was deflected in the air off the hand of TE Rob Housler and was intercepted by SS Kam Chancellor. Later in the 1st, the Cards advanced to the SEA33 on a 26-yard Andre Ellington run but on 3 rd -n-13 from the SEA36, Palmer tried to thread a pass to Larry Fitzgerald but was INT d by CB Richard Sherman. Early in the 2 nd quarter, Steven Hauschka s 27-yard FG made it 3-0. Arizona soon tied it when Jay Feely s 39-yard FG capped a 16-play, 75-yard drive. Late in the 1 st half, Seattle was poised to reclaim the lead when Palmer s 3 rd down pass was tipped at the line and INT d by LB Malcolm Smith who returned it 32 yards to the AZ3. From there, the Cards stuffed Lynch twice and forced an incompletion on 3 rd down. A false start penalty backed Seattle up 5 yards and Hauschka s 24-yard try clanked off the left upright to keep the game tied 3-3. The defensive battle intensified in the 3 rd quarter when the 1st 7 drives ended in punts. Late in the quarter, AZ capitalized on great field position when Feely connected from 46 yards out to make it 6-3. When Justin Bethel recovered Robert Turbin s fumble on the ensuing kickoff, the Cards took over at the SEA18. However, Palmer s 3 rd down pass into the end zone was again INT d by Sherman. A 26- yard Feely FG on the next AZ drive made it 9-3 with 10:40 to go. Seattle then scored the game s 1 st TD when Wilson hit TE Zach Miller with an 11-yard TD pass. A rare blocked PAT try seemed to keep the score tied at 9 but an even rarer penalty was called on Daryl Washington for lining up too close to the center and the re-try was good. Down 1 with 7:26 to go, AZ took over at its own 20. On 3 rd -n-3 at the 27 Palmer scrambled from the pocket before finding TE Jake Ballard for 17 and a key 1 st down. With 2:20 to go and facing a 3 rd -n-6 at the SEA31, Palmer lofted a pass down the left sideline that Michael Floyd hauled in for his only catch of the day. That and Rashard Mendenhall s successful 2-point conversion run made it On the next play from scrimmage, Wilson s pass to Doug Baldwin bounced off the WR s forearm and into the air where it was caught by LB Karlos Dansby for a game-icing INT. The Cardinals defense did much of the heavy lifting in halting Seattle s win streak, holding the Seahawks offense to just 10 points. That is Seattle s lowest point total for the season and the lowest total since scoring six points on 10/18/12 at San Francisco a span of 23 games. It was their lowest point total in a home game since scoring seven points vs. the NY Giants on 11/7/10 a span of 26 home games. HARDER THAN IT LOOKS How did the Cardinals hand the Seahawks their first home loss in nearly two years? Arizona did it mainly by shutting down QB Russell Wilson and RB Marshawn Lynch. RB Marshawn Lynch Lynch totaled 71 rushing yards on 18 attempts (3.9 avg.) last week. After totaling 60 yards on 11 attempts (5.5 avg.) in the first half, the Cardinals held Lynch to just 11 yards on seven attempts (1.6 avg.) in the second half. Lynch s longest run of the game was a 19-yarder in the first quarter. Of his 18 attempts for the game, 11 went for two yards or fewer, including eight of his final 11 attempts. QB Russell Wilson The Cardinals handed the Seahawks second-year QB his first career home loss last week. Wilson entered the game with a perfect 14-0 mark at CenturyLink Field, tied for the third-most home wins for a player to start his career since the 1970 NFL- AFL merger; Dallas QB Danny White (16, ) and Rams QB Kurt Warner (15, ). Before last week s game, Wilson s last home loss as a starter came on 10/2/10 for NC State against Virginia Tech. That game was played 1,177 days prior to Arizona s victory on Sunday. Against the Cardinals, Wilson completed just 11 of 27 pass attempts (40.7%) for 108 yards, a TD, an INT and a 49.6 passer rating. Below is a look at where Wilson s performance ranks among his career starts: Wilson s 108 passing yards and 4.0 yards per attempt both rank as the lowest totals of his career. His 49.6 passer rating is the third-lowest of his career and ranks as his lowest rating this season. It also marked the lowest passer rating of his career while playing at home. Prior to last week, his lowest passer rating in a home game was 63.9 on 9/15/13 vs. San Francisco. His 40.7 completion percentage ranks as the second-lowest mark of his career (39.1% on San Francisco). In the first half of last week s game, Wilson completed just six of 16 pass attempts (37.5%) for 47 yards. Through the first three quarters, Seattle had the same amount of punts (8) as Wilson did completions (8). In the second and third quarters combined, Wilson completed just three of 13 pass attempts (23.1%) for 11 yards. The Cardinals held the Seahawks offense to: 192 net yards, the lowest total for a Cardinals opponent this season and second-lowest for the Seahawks offense St. Louis, 10/28). 82 net yards passing, the lowest total for a Cardinals opponent this season and the lowest total for the Seahawks since they had 69 net passing yards on 10/23/11 at Cleveland. 10 total first downs, a season low for the Seahawks offense and the Cardinals defense conversion percentage on third down, the lowest for Seattle s offense since 10/31/10 at Oakland, when they converted 1 of 16 third down attempts (6.3%). 3.8 yards per play 192 yards on 51 plays. That is the lowest total for a Cardinals opponent this season and the secondlowest output for the Seahawks in 2013 St. Louis, 10/28). 2.9 yards per pass play, the lowest total for a Cardinals opponent since 10/21/12 at Minnesota, when the Vikings averaged 2.2 yards per pass play. It represents the lowest average for the Seahawks this season and lowest total since 10/23/11 at Cleveland. 22:36 time of possession, the lowest possession total for a Cardinals opponent this season and lowest since Arizona held Seattle to a 17:10 time of possession on 10/18/09 at Seattle. SHORT DRIVES FOR SEATTLE The Seahawks had just one drive that consisted of more than six plays last week. Of their 13 offensive possessions: 8 consisted of 3 plays or fewer. Seattle s drive chart, in order: 4, 3, 13, 3, 3, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 6 and 1 plays 9 consisted of fewer than 10 total net yards 4 went for negative net yards (-2, -3, -5, -6) 3 began inside Arizona territory. Seattle scored zero points on those three drives 9 featured zero first downs The Stand: Just prior to halftime, with the game tied 3-3, Seattle intercepted a pass and returned it to the Arizona 3-yard line. Following a 2-yard run by Marshawn Lynch that gave the Seahawks 2 nd -n-goal from the 1-yard line, Lynch was held for no gain on second down and QB Russell Wilson threw an incomplete pass on third down. On fourth down, Seattle was flagged for a false start while lining up for a field goal. K Steven Hauschka s 24-yard FG attempt on the next play went off the goal post, and the game stayed tied at the intermission. A RARE TURNOVER TALE The Cardinals committed four turnovers last week, but still earned the victory over Seattle. The last time the Seahawks posted four takeaways in a game and still lost was on 10/28/01 vs. Miami when Seattle playing a home game at Husky Stadium forced two fumbles and two INTs in a loss. Entering last week s game, Seattle had won 26 consecutive games when forcing at least four turnovers dating back to The last time Seattle lost a game in which they had at least a +2 advantage in turnover margin was on 10/10/04 when they lost to the Rams in OT despite having a plus-3 turnover margin. Arizona s defense stepped up when Seattle began drives following a turnover. On the Seahawks four drives that followed Cardinals turnovers, Seattle scored just three points. 8 UNCONVENTIONAL SCORING The Cardinals have not relied purely on the offense to score points this season. The defense has also come up with points in a variety of ways. INTERCEPTION GOES FOR A TD AGAIN In the Week 15 victory over the Titans, CB Antoine Cason returned an INT 20 yards for a TD in the fourth quarter. It marked the Cardinals fourth INT return for a TD this season and third in four games. The first came in the Week 5 victory over Carolina when DE Calais Campbell sacked QB Cam Newton in the end zone. CREDIT GOES TO THE LINE Facing one of the NFL s toughest defensive fronts in Seattle last week, the Cardinals offensive line LT Bradley Sowell, LG Daryn Colledge, C Lyle Sendlein, RG Paul Fanaika and RT Eric Winston led the way for a rushing attack that piled up 139 yards on the ground and helped Arizona compile a 37:24 to 22:36 time of possession advantage. Sunday s game marked the Cardinals third in a row with at least 100 rushing yards all three being wins. The last time the Cardinals rushed for 100+ yards in three straight games came in Weeks 1-3 of the 2010 season. In the last three games, the Cardinals have 391 rushing yards and four rushing TDs. In that same span and despite facing two of the NFL s fiercest pass rushes in St. Louis and Seattle the offensive line has allowed just five sacks on 92 drop backs a 5.4 sack percentage. PILING UP POINTS After posting 17 points against the Seahawks last week, Arizona has scored 358 points so far in 2013, which already surpasses their point total for the 2010 (289), 2011 (312) and 2012 (250) seasons. 9 KEIM TAKES THE REINS If he doesn t get Executive of the Year, something is wrong. People want to talk about Coach of the Year, I just coach the team. He deserves to be Executive of the Year. What he did in his first year is phenomenal. And I ve been around a little bit. --Bruce Arians on Cardinals 1 st Year GM Steve Keim In his first season as Cardinals GM, Steve Keim has helped guide the team to one of the most successful regular season runs in franchise history. After a 5-11 season in 2012, the Cardinals enter Week 17 with a 10-5 record and a chance at the postseason and an opportunity to match the best regular season win total in team annals. RE-TOOLING THE ROSTER WITH WINNING RESULTS As soon as he was hired as GM in January, Steve Keim began the process of reloading the Cardinals roster, a process that has been ongoing throughout the season. Since Keim was hired as GM, the Cardinals have made 193 roster moves. Of the 53 players on the current roster, 28 were not on the team last year, including 12 of the 22 starters in last week s win at Seattle. Over the last three games, 7 of the team s 9 TDs were scored by players not on the Cardinals roster last season. Arizona s five-win improvement over its 2012 record matches the best one-season turnaround in franchise history (4-12 in 97 to 9-7 in 98) and of the eight first-year GMs in the NFL this season, Keim is one of four currently with a winning record. Record of Teams with 1 st Year GMs Record Team General Manager 11-4 Kansas City John Dorsey 11-4 Carolina Dave Gettleman 10-5 Arizona Steve Keim 8-7 San Diego Tom Telesco 7-8 NY Jets John Idzik 6-9 Buffalo Doug Whaley 4-11 Cleveland Mike Lombardi 4-11 Jacksonville David Caldwell BREAKING DOWN THE ACQUISITIONS Of the 28 players on the roster who were not with the Cardinals in 2012: 15 have appeared in all 15 games, including 6 who have started all 15 games. 17 have started at least 1 game. 2 have earned NFC Player of the Week honors (Palmer, Abraham). 12 have recorded either a sack or a TD/or both (Dansby, Shaughnessy). 7 have combined for 26.5 sacks. 6 appeared in 100% of the snaps on offense/defense last week. 1 earned NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month (Mathieu now on IR) THE EYE OF A SCOUT Although he is in his first season as GM, Keim is in his 15 th season with the Cardinals organization, having originally joined the club in 1999 as a college scout covering the eastern portion of the country. He was promoted to Director of College Scouting in 2006, Director of Player Personnel in 2008 and was then promoted to Vice President, Player Personnel in May, Keim has used his background as a scout to his advantage, exploiting every avenue at his disposal to re-shape the roster: Free Agency During the offseason, Keim brought in QB Carson Palmer, T Eric Winston, LBs Karlos Dansby, John Abraham and Matt Shaughnessy, S Yeremiah Bell, CB Jerraud Powers, RB Rashard Mendenhall and G Paul Fanaika all of whom have become full-time starters. Abraham and Winston were signed on the Cards first day of training camp. The results are indisputable Abraham has shown his Hall of Fame form with 11.5 sacks, Winston has started all 15 games on a vastly improved line, Palmer is nearing 4,000 passing yards and 25 TDs on the season and Dansby is a legitimate contender for NFL Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to the starters, regular contributors such as CBs Antoine Cason and Javier Arenas, LB Jasper Brinkley and DT Frostee Rucker have all proved significant additions including Cason s role in the Cardinals OT win in Tennesse in Week NFL Draft and Rookie Free Agents Keim s first draft as a GM resulted in some of the NFL s most exciting young talent on both offense and defense despite losing four picks due to injury. Third-round pick S Tyrann Mathieu took just weeks to work his way into the starting lineup and the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Month for October was so effective in the lineup that he remains a legitimate NFL Defensive Rookie of Year candidate despite landing on IR following a Week 14 knee injury. Sixth-round draft pick RB Andre Ellington has become one of the NFL s most exciting young playmakers, leading all NFL RBs in rushing average. Ellington is also on the verge of becoming just the fifth rookie in franchise history to reach 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Fifth-round pick RB Stepfan Taylor has worked his way into a regular spot in the Cardinals RB rotation as well, serving as a key blocker and short-yardage specialist. Arizona has also gotten significant production from a pair of rookie free agents in S Tony Jefferson and WR Jaron Brown. Jefferson has appeared in all 15 games this season and made his second career start last week in the Cardinals upset win over Seattle. Brown has also appeared in all 15 games this season, adding 11 receptions for 140 yards and a TD. In-Season Acquisitions Another area where the Cardinals have found success under Keim s watch has been the signing of players in-season to fill holes in the roster when needed. Waiver Wire Wonders: T Bradley Sowell and NT Alameda Ta amu, claimed off waivers on 9/1 from the Colts and Steelers respectively, have become key players for a vastly improved Cardinals team in Sowell moved into the starting LT spot in Week 5. Since then, the Cardinals O-line has improved steadily and the Cardinals hold an 8-3 record in that span. The offensive line has led the Cardinals to 100-yard rushing performances in each of the last three games while giving up just five sacks in 92 drop backs. Ta amu has teamed with former first round pick Dan Williams to solidify the middle of a defense line that anchors the NFL s top run defense this season. Ta amu has appeared in 13 consecutive games and eaten up significant playing time. LB Marcus Benard was signed following the Cards Week 5 contest and has earned a regular spot on the linebacker rotation. In 11 games, Benard has 16 tackles, 2.5 sacks and four special teams tackles. WR Brittan Golden and TE Jake Ballard have also proved invaluable in-season signings for Arizona. Signed on 11/4, Ballard has appeared in seven games this season with starts in each of the last two games. In Week 15 at Tennessee, Ballard scored his first TD of the season and last week in the win over Seattle, he had a pivotal 17-yard reception on third down during the Cards game-winning TD drive. Despite facing a hamstring injury, Golden has proved a big play threat for Arizona, with a 53-yard reception in San Francisco five days after he was promoted to the active roster and a 63-yard catch-and-run last week in Seattle. 10 ARIANS KEEPS ON WINNING Bruce Arians has now recorded 10 wins this season in his first year with the Cardinals. He joins Norm Barry (11, 1925) as the only coaches in franchise history to earn at least 10 wins in their first season with the Cardinals. Only four current NFL head coaches have more wins than Arians in their last 27 games on the sidelines: John Fox (22), Pete Carroll (21), Bill Belichick (21) and Sean Payton (20). He has an playoff record, including three Super Bowl appearances and two Super Bowl titles (XL, XLIII). He has also been known for quick turnarounds where he has coached. That has been evident in the Cardinals five-win improvement over the 2012 record so far this season. Arizona s five-win improvement over its 2012 record matches the biggest oneseason turnaround in franchise history, matching the fivegame turnaround from 1997 (4-12) to 1998 (9-7), when Arizona earned its first playoff appearance in the desert. With a win this week, the Cardinals would have their biggest one-season turnaround in franchise history. When Arians First Hit The Postseason Indianapolis Colts: First Year (2012) Pittsburgh Steelers: First Year (2004) Cleveland Browns: Second Year (2002) Indianapolis Colts: Second Year (1999) Kansas City Chiefs: Second Year (1990) Last season with the Colts, Arians was part of one of the greatest turnarounds in league annals. Indy s nine-win improvement from 2011 (2-14 to 11-5) matched the thirdlargest single-season turnaround in NFL history. Arians led the Colts to a 9-3 while serving as interim head coach. COACH OF THE YEAR AGAIN? The case is strong for Bruce Arians to earn Coach of the Year for the second straight season. No coach in any major or college sports league has ever earned consecutive Coach of the Year honors with different teams. WHAT THEY ARE SAYING ARIANS EDITION Give Bruce Arians the coach of the year award, again Stunning the Seahawks on Sunday in Seattle did more than keep the Cardinals in the playoff chase at 10-5 and provide a reminder no team is invincible on its home field. It reinforced just how far Arians has brought this team in a span of one year from a 58-0 loser at CenturyLink Field last Dec. 9 to comeback victors with their season on the line. Tom Pelissero, USA Today, 12/23/13 I'm seriously starting to lean to Bruce Arians for NFL Coach of the Year -- for a second successive season. What he has done there, in only his first season, is nothing short of astounding, and major, major kudos go out to Cardinals rookie GM Steve Keim as well, who helped massage that roster and brought in Carson Palmer and drafted his backside off. Jason La Canfora, CBSSports.com, 12/23/13 Bruce Arians is one heck of a football coach. Coach of the Year is a mystery to me this morning... But Bruce Arians has to be on any list. Peter King, MMQB.com, 12/23/13 Coach of the Year race: It can't be understated what Bruce Arians is doing in Arizona...Steve Keim's doing a wonderful job of player acquisition (and he's the guy who hired the coach) but Arians deserves the lion's share of credit for turning this team around quickly. The Cardinals are playing incredibly well on the field right now and look reasonably similar to the 2012 Colts in the sense that they play so far above their head. Will Brinson, CBSSports.com, 12/23/13 Arians paid his dues, and it s paying off now He earned the NFL Coach of the Year award (in Indy). This year he has a shot to win the Coach of the Year award again. The Cardinals have improved from 5-11 last season to 9-5. Mark Gaughan, Buffalo News, 12/22/13 Cardinals defense is ridiculous, though. And Bruce Arians should be Coach of the Year. Bart Hubbuch, NY Post, 12/22/13 Coach of the Year? Peter Schrager, Fox Sports 12/22/13 Winning at the 12th Man with season on line, time for Cardinals coach Bruce to get Coach of Year talk. Again. Rich Eisen, NFL Network 12/22/13 Regardless of the Cardinals' postseason fate, Bruce Arians deserves Coach of the Year consideration for the second consecutive season.
