1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #3 THIS WEEK S GAME With former LSU stars Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and Kevin Minter in tow, the Cardinals travel to New Orleans to face the 2-0 Saints at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Arizona earned the first win of Bruce Arians tenure last week after taking down the Lions in a come-from-behind victory. Stellar play on special teams, a resilient offense and a stubborn second half defense were the keys to the Cards overcoming a fourth quarter deficit with Arizona scoring nine unanswered points in the final quarter. Highlighting the victory was the all-around performance of Peterson, who totaled four tackles, a pass defensed, three punt returns, a 17-yard reception and a 17-yard pass completion. In doing so, Peterson became the first NFL defender since at least the 1970 merger to post a reception and completion in a game. Special teams play also proved significant, with K Jay Feely connecting on all four FGAs, P Dave Zastudil repeatedly forcing the Lions to begin drives deep in their own territory and CB Justin Bethel racing off the corner to block a 47-yard FGA in the fourth quarter. Other highlights came courtesy of a pair of rookies, as RB Andre Ellington scored his first NFL TD on a 36-yard reception and S Tyrann Mathieu sealed the win by tackling WR Nate Burleson for a three-yard gain on 4 th -n-4 on the Lions final drive of the game. Following this week s game, the Cardinals will fly directly to Florida for a week of practice leading up to their Week 4 matchup against Tampa Bay. The Saints remain home for a Monday Night meeting with the Miami Dolphins. But with a gritty effort from Hall and a superb performance from the defense and special teams Arizona earned a 10-point win that moved them to 3-2 heading into the bye. The defense forced 4 turnovers - 2 of which were returned for TDs and allowed the Saints just one TD in 4 red zone trips. The Cards became just the 2 nd NFL team (Bears 93) to score 30 points without a rushing or passing TD. The game did not begin well for Hall, who was picked off by CB Jabari Greer on the 3 rd play from scrimmage. The Saints capitalized on the takeaway with a 31-yard John Carney FG and on their next series went up 10-0 when Drew Brees 1-yard TD pass to Jeremy Shockey capped an 11- play drive. LaRod Stephens-Howling returned the ensuing kickoff 48 yards to midfield which led to a 37-yard Feely FG. The next AZ drive ended with a punt from Ben Graham that Michael Adams downed at the 1, backing the Saints up to their own goal line. On the next play, Brees pass landed in the hands of LB Paris Lenon at the 4. On 3 rd -n-goal at the 1, Hall scrambled and dove toward the end zone but was separated from the ball (and his helmet) on a hard hit from Anthony Hargrove. Fortuitously, LT Levi Brown scooped it up and lunged into the end zone for his first career TD at any level. With the game tied at 13, the Saints went up just before the half on a 32-yard Carney FG. After sending the Saints 3-n-out to start the 3 rd quarter, the Cards tied the game at 16 on Feely s 44-yard FG. New Orleans then marched deep into AZ territory and had it 1 st -n-goal at the 5 but was forced to settle for a 29-yard FG try that Carney missed wide left. The Cards responded with another sustained drive and took their first lead of the day with Feely s 29-yard FG early in the 4 th. On the 2 nd play of the next drive, Darnell Dockett hit Ladell Betts in the backfield, forcing a fumble that Kerry Rhodes returned 27 yards for his 2 nd fumble recovery TD in as many weeks. With AZ now up 10, Greg Toler ended the next Saints drive with his INT off Brees. With 1:55 left, Brees made it with his 35-yard TD pass to Robert Meachem but Larry Fitzgerald recovered the Saints onside kick attempt. A punt gave the Saints one last chance when they took over at their own 9 with 0:24 left. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie then snuffed out that chance on the next play when he INT d Brees and returned it 28 yards for the final score. SAINTS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 4 LAST WEEK S GAME CARDINALS 25, Lions 21 September 15, 2013 University of Phoenix Stadium (60,324) In a back and forth affair, the Cardinals found themselves down late in the 3 rd quarter in their home opener against Detroit. From there Arizona would score on 3 of its next 4 drives to earn the team s first win under new head coach Bruce Arians. Kicker Jay Feely was 4-4 on field goals (47, 23, 43, 33) while a pair of newcomers chipped in with TDs. Early the in the 3 rd, DE Calais Campbell recovered a Reggie Bush fumbled handoff at the DET7 but the Cards had to settle for a Feely FG. This is not the first trip of its kind for the Cardinals. During the 2008 season, Arizona spent the week between road games at Washington and at the New York Jets in Tyson s Corner, VA. The Cardinals have had extended stays during the preseason as well, having spent a week on the campus of Missouri Western University in 2012 while preparing to face the Chiefs. During the 2010 preseason, the Cardinals followed a Monday Night matchup against the Titans with an extended stay in Nashville in preparation for a meeting with the Bears in Chicago on Saturday. 6 SOMETHING SPECIAL The Cardinals performance against the Lions last week was a perfect example of how special teams play can turn the tide of a game and help lead directly to a victory. Bethel s Big Block With the Cardinals trailing in the fourth quarter, CB Justin Bethel made one of the game s biggest plays, coming off the edge to block a 47-yard FG attempt by Lions K David Akers that kept the Cardinals within two points. It was the first blocked FG of Bethel s career. Dating back to 2008, it was the Cardinals 15 th blocked FGA, the highest total in the NFL during that span. Most Blocked FG Attempts (2008-present) Block Team 15 Arizona 10 Seattle 8 Buffalo 6 Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Minnesota Arizona has now blocked 17 total kicks (FG, Punt, PAT) dating back to 2008, which also ranks as the highest total in the NFL. For his part, K Jay Feely totaled a careerhigh six touchbacks. The result was a Detroit offense that began its average drive at its own 15-yard line. Their average start following a kickoff was inside their own 20 (18.3). Through the first two games, Arizona s opponents have returned just four punts for a total of three yards, with their 0.8-yard return average ranking as the lowest total in the NFL this season. Of the 23 series for Arizona opponents this season, nine have started inside their own 20-yard line, tied for the second best mark in the NFL behind only Kansas City (11). The Cards defense has recorded three takeaways on those possessions, which trails only New England (4). Four for Feely Feely connected on all four FGAs (47, 23, 43 and 33 yards) and his lone PAT against the Lions. At one point between the second and fourth quarters, Feely scored 10 straight Arizona points, helping the team keep pace with Detroit before the offense put up the game-winning TD late in the fourth quarter. RESUMING HIS RECORD FORM After establishing an NFL single-season record with 46 punts landing inside the 20-yard line in 2012, P Dave Zastudil has landed seven of his nine punts inside the 20 through two games this season including four of five punts against the Lions. He has done so with both accuracy and distance. Below is a look at how Zastudil has landed his punts inside the 20: Zastudil Inside the 20 in yards to the STL yards to the STL yards to the STL yards to the DET yards to the DET 7 52 yards to the DET yards to the DET 8 That is that same blend of distance and accuracy that helped Zastudil break the record last season, surpassing the previous mark of 42, shared by three players Andy Lee (SF, 2007), Ben Graham (Ari, 2009) and Steve Weatherford (NYJ, 2010). The first player drafted out of Presbyterian since 1969, coming from a small school hasn t stopped Bethel from making an enormous impact on special teams during his time in Arizona. After totaling 14 special teams tackles and returning a blocked FG for a TD as a rookie last season, Bethel has wasted no time making his presence felt again this season. In the fourth quarter last week against the Lions, he came off the edge and blocked a 47-yard FG attempt by Lions K David Akers that kept the Cardinals within two points. It was the first blocked FG of Bethel s career but his second standout play on special teams in the last four games. In Week 16 of the 2012 season vs. Chicago, Bethel returned a blocked FG 82 yards for a TD. Following the game, head coach Bruce Arians was asked if teams are going to have to start game-planning for Bethel. With a second-year player, sometimes they say he s a one-hit wonder, but no, I think this kid is special, he said. I don t think they can do much more than double-team him, and if you can get a block off the edge of a field goal, you re pretty dynamic. That s very hard to do. Cardinals vs. Saints #AZvsNO 6 of 43

Arizona has had 29 veterans from the 2012 team depart since the beginning of the 2013 offseason. BIG IMPACT FROM THE ROOKIES In the first two games, three rookies have provided a big spark for the Cardinals. MATHIEU CONTINUES TO SHINE Through his first two career games, S Tyrann Mathieu the Cardinals third round selection (69 th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft has lived up to his billing when it comes to making big plays. In Week 1 it was his TD-saving forced fumble against the Rams and last week it was his fourth down tackle on WR Nate Burleson that left the Lions one-yard short of a first down, ending the game and sealing the Cards victory. Making his first career start against the Lions, Mathieu finished the game with six tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass defensed. Through two games, the former LSU standout has totaled 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, three passes defensed and a forced fumble. ELLINGTON PROVIDES A SPARK Rookie RB Andre Ellington the Cardinals second pick in the sixth round (187 th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Clemson showed his ability to make plays as both a receiver and a runner in Arizona s win over the Lions. Ellington scored the Cardinals first TD on a 36-yard reception from Carson Palmer in the second quarter. He finished the day with two receptions for 42 yards. On the ground, Ellington piled up 20 yards on four attempts, including a long run of 16 yards on the Cardinals eventual game-winning TD drive in the fourth quarter. With a 36-yard reception and a 16-yard run, Ellington had the Cardinals longest reception and rushing play from scrimmage for the game. Of Ellington s six touches, four went for first downs, including the 36-yard TD. Ellington has seven total touches this season, five of which have resulted in first downs. During his four seasons (58 games) at Clemson, Ellington recorded two receiving TDs. He has one in two games with the Cardinals. JEFFERSON MAKES HIS FIRST START Making his first NFL start last week, rookie free agent S Tony Jefferson posted three tackles and a tackle for loss against the Lions. In Week 1 vs. St. Louis, Jefferson jumped on a fumbled kickoff return by CB Javier Arenas at the Arizona 7-yard line, saving a Cardinals possession. HOMETOWN CROWD The Cards roster has four players with ties to Arizona. WR Kerry Taylor: The only one of the four players with Arizona connections to have his entire football career (high school, college and NFL) take place in Arizona. A native of Chandler, Taylor was an All-State receiver at Hamilton High School before going to star at Arizona State. C Lyle Sendlein: A native of Scottsdale, Sendlein graduated from Chaparral High School where he was a four-year letterman and three-year starter. He helped lead the team to back-to-back state titles and was a first-team All-State selection as a senior. In his first draft as GM, Keim selected such college standouts as LB Kevin Minter and S Tyrann Mathieu. Steve has earned this position, Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said when announcing Keim s promotion. As I went through the process of evaluating the field of candidates and speaking to people, both inside our training facility and outside, I became more and more convinced that Steve Keim was the right man to be the general manager for the Arizona Cardinals. A Pennsylvania native, Keim was a two-time All-ACC selection at guard at N.C. State before going on to a brief stint in professional football as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins (1996) and Edmonton Eskimos (1997) of the Canadian Football League. UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS IN INDY The Indianapolis Colts posted a 2-14 record in 2011, featuring an offense that ranked 30 th overall in the NFL. In one season under Bruce Arians, the Colts offense which was stacked with rookies, including eventual Pro Bowl QB Andrew Luck finished the year ranked 10 th overall and Indy returned to the postseason after posting an 11-5 record Colts Notes Was named both Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly & the Pro Football Writers of America. He became the first individual to win both awards in the same year. Took over as interim coach on October 1, 2012 when head coach Chuck Pagano left the team to undergo treatment for leukemia. Led the Colts to a 9-3 record in his 12 games and helped Indianapolis clinch a playoff berth while tying the NFL record for most wins ever by an interim coach. Arians and Pagano shared Coach of the Year honors from the Maxwell Club in Philadelphia and were named AFC Coach of the Year by NFL 101 in Kansas City. Indy s nine-win improvement from 2011 (2-14 to 11-5) matched the third-largest single-season turnaround in NFL history. Rookie QB Andrew Luck, a 2012 Pro Bowl selection, threw for the most passing yards (4,374) by a rookie in NFL history. Luck had an NFL rookie record six 300-yard passing games and led the Colts on seven game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or OT, the most by a rookie QB since the 1970 merger. In all, Indy s rookies also combined for 3,108 yards rushing and receiving, the most of any team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger according to STATS LLC. AN ACCOMPLISHED ROOKIE The 2013 season represents the beginning of the Bruce Arians era in Arizona. Hired as the Cardinals head coach on 1/17/13, the first-time head coach came to Arizona as the reigning AP NFL Coach of the Year following his work with the Indianapolis Colts in A former QB at Virginia Tech ( ), Arians began his coaching career in 1975 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. He was also the Steelers wide receivers coach when they won Super Bowl XL. NOT JUST THE HEAD COACH NFL head coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are defensive specialists while some have experience rooted in the offensive side of the ball. Cardinals first-year head coach Bruce Arians has earned a reputation as one of the NFL s most aggressive player callers in his time with Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Arians will utilize those skills as an offensive specialist with the Cardinals, continuing to call the plays from the sidelines, opting to continue doing what only a handful of NFL head coaches do when taking over the leadership role. There are only seven coaches in the NFL that call the offensive plays team, with many relying on their coordinators. Below is a list of NFL head coaches who call their own plays: NFL Head Coaches Calling Plays on Offense Bruce Arians (Arizona) Andy Reid (Kansas City) Marc Trestman (Chicago) Sean Payton (New Orleans) Mike McCarthy (Green Bay) Chip Kelly (Philadelphia) Gary Kubiak (Houston) QUICK TURNAROUND Bruce Arians has been a part of 13 different playoff teams in his 20 seasons as an NFL coach. 10 REMARKABLE RECOVERY That Cardinals quarterback coach Freddie Kitchens was with the team when it reported to training camp on July 25 th was remarkable considering the scare he endured just 50 days earlier. At an OTA practice on June 4 th, Kitchens began to feel ill. QBs Drew Stanton and Carson Palmer sensed that something was wrong and called over the team s head trainer Tom Reed. Anyone who knows Freddie s personality, he s jovial and easy-going, Stanton said. He was joking around asking if a heart attack is on the left or right side, going for the chuckle, and then said Actually, it s kind of in the middle here. I told him, Freddie, that sounds kind of serious, and Carson (Palmer) said Yeah Freddie, you don t look so good, you re kind of flush. He tried to say he was OK, but we called Tom (Reed) over and he was monitoring him. The trainers arranged for Kitchens to be taken to the hospital for tests and during that process, a CT scan revealed tears in his aorta that required surgery, which he had that same night after being flown to the Arizona Heart Hospital. "We never even talked about how soon I would be back," Kitchens said after the team reported to camp. "It's really the same way you do it in football. You just do the best you can every day and you see where you're at in the end. It just so happened I was well enough to get back to work. When he was on the sideline for the Week 1 season opener against St. Louis, Kitchens was just 96 days removed from heart surgery. RECORD HOLDER RETURNS The running backs on the Arizona roster have a lot of work to do to live up to the legacy left by their position coach, Stump Mitchell, while he played with the Cardinals. A standout RB and return specialist for nine seasons with the Cards from , Mitchell enters his first season as RBs coach with the Cardinals and 12 th season as an NFL assistant. A ninth round selection (226 th overall) by the Cardinals in the 1981 NFL Draft, Mitchell spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the Cards. He currently holds the franchise record with 11,988 all-purpose yards and ranks second all-time in rushing yards (4,649), punt return yards (1,377) and kickoff return yards (4,007), while also adding 1,955 career receiving yards. Mitchell finished his career having posted a 4.7-yard average, which ranks as the second-highest career mark in team history. He posted a 5.6-yard rushing average in 1981, earning All-Rookie honors from Pro Football Weekly, who also awarded him All-NFC honors as a kickoff returner in PRATT IN 35 th NFL SEASON Cardinals pass rush specialist Tom Pratt kicked off his 35 th year coaching in the NFL in 2013 after starting his career in 1963 with the Kansas City Chiefs. Before coaching the Kansas City defensive line in Super Bowl I and earning a title in Super Bowl IV, Pratt held the same position for the Chiefs while they were members of the American Football League, earning him the honor of being the only active NFL assistant to have coached in the AFL. Pratt is also the only current coach in the NFL to be on staff during each of the last six decades (60 s, 70 s, 80 s, 90 s, 00 s and 10 s). During his NFL tenure, Pratt has coached four Pro Football Hall of Famers, including two 2013 selections, has aided five players in reaching a combined 23 Pro Bowls and helped three players earn a combined seven All-Pro titles. In 2012, Goodwin helped the Colts to a nine-win improvement from 2011 (2-14 to 11-5), which matched the third-largest single-season turnaround in NFL history. Indy s rookies also combined for 3,108 yards rushing and receiving in 2012, the most of any team since the 1970 AFL- NFL merger. The 2013 season will be the seventh consecutive season Goodwin has worked under Arians after previous assignments with Pittsburgh ( ) and Indy (2012). Played collegiately at Michigan on the offensive line ( ) before beginning his coaching career with the Wolverines as a student assistant ( ) and a grad assistant in 97.
