1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Divisional Playoff Game Saturday, January 16, :30 PM (MST) ARIZONA CARDINALS 2009 SEASON SCHEDULE ARIZONA CARDINALS (10-6, 1-0) vs. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS (13-3, 0-0) Superdome THIS WEEK S GAME Six days after defeating the Packers in an epic shoot-out at University of Phoenix Stadium, the Cardinals will be in New Orleans to face the #1 seeded Saints. The winner earns a spot in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, January 24. The Cards are coming off a thrilling overtime victory over Green Bay in one of the greatest games in NFL playoff history. In addition to scoring an NFL-record 96 points, the two teams combined for 13 touchdowns (9 passing) and over 1,000 total yards. But while the offensive highlights were numerous, the AZ defense provided the game-winning score on the first series of OT. When CB Michael Adams sacked Aaron Rodgers, LB Karlos Dansby snatched the ball midair and returned it for a TD; it was one of three huge defensive plays by Dansby. Against the NFL s #2 ranked defense, Kurt Warner cemented his place among the NFL s greatest postseason QBs by passing for 379 yards and amazingly having more TD passes (5) than incompletions (4). The Cardinals have captured back-to-back NFC West titles and entered the 2009 postseason as the conference s #4 seed for the second consecutive year. Last season, the Cardinals became the first #4 seed from the NFC to advance to the Super Bowl. The Cardinals also avoided the Super Bowl Curse, becoming just the third team since 1999 to return to the postseason after finishing as the Super Bowl runner-up. Thanks in large part to the NFL s #1 ranked offense, the Saints averaged 32 points per game and finished the regular season with a 13-3 record. As the NFC s #1 seed they earned a firstround bye on Wild Card weekend. The winner of this week s Cards-Saints contest will earn a trip to the conference title game and face the winner of Sunday s Cowboys-Vikings game in Minnesota. The Saints would host that game if they win while the Cardinals would travel to either Dallas or Minnesota. The Cards are looking for their second straight championship game appearance while the Saints last went following the 2007 season (lost at Chicago). This week marks the 26 th meeting between the two teams, but the first in postseason play. The Cards dominated the series early on, winning eight of the first 10 matchups between the two franchises. Dating back to 1996, the teams are even at 3-3, with neither team winning back-toback games. This week marks the Cardinals 11 th trip to New Orleans where they hold a 4-6 record. The winner would stay alive in the NFC Wild Card race while the loser would be all but eliminated. Led by the passing of Drew Brees (26-30, 315 yards, 2 TDs, 0 INTs) and the rushing of RB Aaron Stecker (95 yards, 2 TDs), the Saints scored on 5 of their 9 offensive possessions to edge the Cardinals by 7. Early on it was a Saints turnover that gave Arizona the game s first break when Stecker fumbled at the end of a run on the second snap of the day. LB Darryl Blackstock scooped up the loose ball and returned it 34 yards to the NO8. That led to a 1-yard Warner TD pass to TE Troy Bienemann on 4 th -n-goal. The Saints answered with long TD drives on their next two possessions. Arizona tied it on the next series when Warner and Larry Fitzgerald connected on an 18-yard TD pass. Late in the first half, Warner went deep down the middle for Bienemann but the ball bounced from the TE s hands, hit a defender s foot and bounced to SS Roman Harper who returned the INT 31 yards to the NO45. The Saints converted the takeaway into points when David Patten hauled in a 32-yard TD pass that put New Orleans up They took that lead into the locker room after Neil Rackers missed on a 54-yard FG as the half expired. On the opening drive of the 2 nd half, Warner was sacked by LB Scott Fujita forcing a fumble that LB Scott Shanle recovered and returned to the AZ7. Shortly thereafter, Stecker ran it in from 6 yards out to put the Saints up Arizona responded by driving 80 yards in 10 plays and the Cards cut the lead in half when Warner tossed a 3-yard TD pass to rookie TE Ben Patrick. Martin Gramatica s 31-yard FG on the next Saints drive made it at the end of three. On Arizona s next possession, the Cards executed a successful fake punt on 4 th -n-7 at their own 25 when Sean Morey picked up 13. That drive ultimately reached the NO6 but the Cards could not get it in the end zone and had to settle for a 26-yard Rackers FG that made it a 7-point game with 9:11 to play. Arizona then got it back when Patten fumbled on the next series and LB Calvin Pace recovered at the AZ43. The Cards could not capitalize and went 3-n-out. After the punt, the Saints took over at their own 4 with 5:54 to go. Arizona could not get them off the field as they were able to run 10 plays and pick up 4 first downs to run the clock out entirely. CARDINALS SAINTS Team Qtr. 3 CARDINALS WIN OVERTIME THRILLER TO ADVANCE The Cardinals scored six offensive TDs and piled up 531 total yards of offense in last week s game against Green Bay, but it was a defensive TD by LB Karlos Dansby on the first overtime possession that propelled Arizona to the OT win in the Wild Card matchup with the Packers. The Cardinals 51 points represent the highest point total for a team in the postseason since Jacksonville scored a modern era NFLrecord 62 points on 1/15/00 vs. Miami. The 51 points mark the highest point total in a game for the Cardinals (regular or postseason) since 10/6/63 at Minnesota when they scored 56 points. Dansby s 17-yard fumble return for a TD came 1:18 into the OT period, making it the second-fastest OT score in a playoff game. In the NFC Divisional Game between the LA Rams and NY Giants on 1/7/90, the Rams connected on a 30-yard TD pass 76 seconds into the OT period. Dating back to 1958, last week s game marked just the second time in 26 postseason OT games that it ended on a defensive TD. The Packers were involved in the other game as well when Green Bay CB Al Harris picked off a Matt Hasselbeck pass and returned it 52 yards for a TD when the Packers hosted the Seahawks in a Wild Card matchup on 1/4/04. Dansby s fumble return for a TD marks just the second time in franchise history (regular and postseason) that an OT game ended on a defensive TD. On 10/29/95 vs. Seattle, Lorenzo Lynch returned an INT 72 yards for a TD in the Cardinals OT victory over the Seahawks. CARDINALS-PACKERS GAME IN THE NFL RECORD BOOKS The 96 combined points in last week s game set an NFL record for points scored in a postseason game. The previous record was 95 points, when the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Detroit Lions in a Wild Card matchup on 12/30/95. Most Points (Both Teams) In Postseason Game NFL History Points Teams 96 Arizona (51) vs. Green Bay (45), 2009 (OT)* 95 Philadelphia (58) vs. Detroit (37), St. Louis (49) vs. Minnesota (37), 1999* 79 San Diego (41) vs. Miami (38), 1981 (OT) Buffalo (41) vs. Houston (38), 1992 (OT) *Kurt Warner has now been the QB for two of the teams (Arizona, 2009 and St. Louis, 1999) that have been involved in two of the three highest scoring games in postseason history. The Cardinals (7) and Packers (6) combined for 13 TDs in the game, another NFL postseason record. The previous record came in the same Wild Card matchup between Philadelphia (7) and Detroit (5) in Of the 13 TDs scored, nine came through the air, tying the NFL record for most passing TDs in a postseason game, matching the total from the Divisional contest between St. Louis (5) and Minnesota (4) on 1/16/00. Kurt Warner was the Rams QB at the time and it was the only other time in his career that he threw for five TDs in a postseason game. It marked just the second time in the Super Bowl era that two QBs threw for 300+ yards and four+ TDs in the same game. Warner was involved in the other matchup as well, coming in the Rams-Vikings matchup on 1/16/00. There were 11 different players who scored TDs in last week s game, an NFL postseason record. The Cardinals offense reached third down just five times in the game (twice in 1 st quarter, three times in 4 th ) and was three of five in converting on third down. Arizona finished with 30 first downs in the game while Green Bay totaled 32, combining for an NFL postseason record 62 total first downs between the two teams. The previous record was 59, established in 1981 when the Chargers (34) met the Dolphins (25) in a Divisional Game. The Cardinals 51 points are a franchise postseason record, shattering the former record of 33 points, established in the Divisional Game in Carolina on 1/10/09. AVOIDING THE SUPER BOWL CURSE Prior to the Cardinals clinching a return to the playoffs as the NFC West champions, only two of the previous 10 Super Bowl runnerups returned to the playoffs the following year. 4 CARDINALS TURN THE TIDE ON PACKERS The Cardinals put up 531 total yards of offense against a Packers defense that ranked second overall in the NFL in total defense during the 2009 regular season. Below is a look at the Packers average yardage allowed during the regular season compared to the numbers Arizona posted last week. Packers Defense Regular Season vs. AZ Diff Passing Yards Allowed Per Game (5 th overall) Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game 83.3 (1 st overall) Total Yards Allowed Per Game (2 nd overall) Points Allowed Per Game 18.6 (3 rd overall) Green Bay was #1 in the NFL with a +24 turnover ratio during the regular season. Arizona entered the postseason as the only team with a negative turnover ratio (-7). The Cardinals forced three turnovers (two fumbles, INT) and finished with a +2 turnover ratio. Arizona scored 21 points off the three Packers turnovers and held a plus-14 advantage in points off turnovers in the game. After forcing three turnovers against Green Bay, the Cardinals have now forced 16 turnovers (10 INTs, 6 fumbles) in five postseason contests under head coach Ken Whisenhunt. In those five games, the Cardinals have committed just six turnovers, giving them a plus-10 turnover ratio in the postseason. The Cardinals sacked Packers QB Aaron Rodgers five times in the game, the final one coming on the game-winning sack and forced fumble by CB Michael Adams. Entering last week s game, Rodgers had been sacked just six times in the Packers final nine regular season games. On the first play from scrimmage, Cardinals CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie picked off Rodgers, leading to Arizona s first TD of the game. Rodgers had thrown just two INTs in the last eight games of the regular season, both coming in the week 13 contest vs. Baltimore. Before his INT last week, Rodgers had attempted 133 consecutive passes without throwing an INT. The Packers had the #1 rush defense in the NFL during the regular season, allowing just 83.3 yards per game on the ground. The Cardinals totaled 156 rushing yards, the most Green Bay gave up all season. Their previous high was 151 yards (vs. Cincinnati, 9/20/09). Rookie RB Beanie Wells led the way for the Cardinals, rushing for 91 yards on 14 carries (6.5 avg.), including a long run of 42 yards. CARDINALS PLAYOFF HISTORY The Cardinals clinched their second-consecutive NFC West title in 2009, marking the first back-to-back division titles for the franchise since winning the NFC East in 1974 and That is also the last time the franchise earned back-to-back postseason appearances. As the 2009 NFC West Champions, the Cardinals opened the franchise s eighth playoff appearance last week with a OT victory over Green Bay in the Wild Card game. The Cardinals will now travel to New Orleans this week to face off against the NFC s #1 seed in the Saints. The Cardinals entered the 2009 postseason as the #4 seed in the NFC for the second consecutive year. Last season, the Cardinals became the first #4 seed from the NFC to advance to the Super Bowl. 5 WARNER NEARS POSTSEASON PERFECTION CONTINUED EXCELLENCE Kurt Warner completed 29 of 33 passes for 379 yards, five TDs and no INTs last week in leading the Cardinals past the Packers. Warner threw more TD passes (5) than incompletions (4) in the game last week, just the second time in his career he has accomplished that feat. The only other time came on 10/10/99 vs. San Francisco when he completed 20 of 23 passes and threw five TDs. Warner had two separate streaks of 11 consecutive completions in last week s game. He became the first QB in the Super Bowl era to accomplish that feat in a postseason game. Warner is first QB in NFL history with three postseason games with 4+TD passes (Daryle Lamonica, Peyton Manning and Joe Montana have two apiece). Warner now joins Peyton Manning as the only players in NFL history with two postseason games with a passer rating of or higher. Warner is second QB in NFL history to throw five or more TD passes in two postseason games. Daryle Lamonica had five TDs vs. Kansas City in 1968 and six vs. Houston in Only four other QBs (Peyton Manning, Kerry Collins, Steve Young and Joe Montana) have ever had five TDs in a postseason game. 6 PICKING UP WHERE HE LEFT OFF During the 2008 postseason, Larry Fitzgerald was unstoppable, breaking virtually every postseason receiving record imaginable. He shattered the NFL records for receiving yards in a single postseason (546), receptions (30) and TDs (7). Fitzgerald recorded four 100-yard games in the postseason as well, a new NFL record for consecutive games with 100-yards receiving. Not too much changed in his first postseason action this season. With 82 receiving yards last week vs. Green Bay, Fitzgerald now has more receiving yards in his first five postseason games (628) than any player in NFL history, passing the record previously held by Randy Moss (584). Receiving Yards In First Five Postseason Games NFL History Yards Player 628 Larry Fitzgerald 584 Randy Moss 571 Tom Fears 538 Anthony Carter 489 James Lofton With his two TD receptions in the game, Fitzgerald now has at least one TD reception in five consecutive postseason games, tying the third-longest streak in NFL postseaon history. After being designated inactive for the first six games in 09, the 2008 third round draft pick out of LSU began showing his potential with his play over the second half of the season. Doucet established a career-high with 17 receptions 214 yards and a TD during the remainder of the regular season. His arrival as a receiving threat alongside Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin and Steve Breaston culminated in his performance in last week s Wild Card matchup against the Packers. Receiving his first career start (regular or postseason) as the third wide receiver, Doucet established career-highs with six receptions for 66 yards and two TDs last week. He scored both TDs in the first half, each coming on 15-yard receptions that propelled the Cardinals to a halftime lead over the Packers. After not catching a TD pass in his first 16 career games (regular and postseason), Doucet now has three TD receptions in the last three games. In his last three games dating back to the regular season, Doucet has totaled 12 receptions, 148 yards and three TD receptions (18, 15, and 15 yards). BREASTON HITS 100 WR Steve Breaston joined Early Doucet in filling in the void left with the injury to Anquan Boldin. Breaston totaled team-highs in receptions (7) and yards (125) while also adding a 17-yard TD reception last week. The contest vs. Green Bay marked his first career 100-yard game in the postseason and also marked his first 100-yard game of the 09 season. His 125 yards represent the highest singlegame total of his career, including the regular season. Breaston also added one rush for 28 yards in the game yesterday. It was Breaston s third rushing attempt of the season and he now has 72 yards on those three attempts (24.0 avg.). Breaston has runs of 28, 25 and 19 yards this season. For his career, Breaston has seven total rushing attempts for 88 yards (12.6 avg.). Breaston now has 20 receptions for 273 yards and a TD in five career postseason games. He joins Larry Fitzgerald (4) and Roy Green (1) as the only receivers in franchise history with 100+ yards in a postseason game. WITH OR WITHOUT Q Just like last week, the status of star WR Anquan Boldin (ankle) is uncertain heading into Saturday s Divisional game vs. New Orleans. And while the Cardinals offense is undoubtedly stronger with the three-time Pro Bowler in the lineup, they ve also had success when he hasn t been able to go, including last week when Larry Fitzgerald, Steve Breaston and Early Doucet combined for 284 yards and five TDs through the air. Dating back to 2008, Arizona is now 6-1 with Boldin out of the lineup including 2-0 during postseason play. Fitzgerald has been very strong with Boldin out of the lineup. In those seven games since 2008, Fitzgerald has totaled 733 yards and 11 TDs on 43 receptions. He has recorded two TDs in three of the last four games he has played without Boldin. 7 A QUICK LOOK BACK AT LAST YEARS RUN The Cardinals capped the 2008 season with the most remarkable playoff run in franchise history, one that ended with the team s first-ever Super Bowl appearance. Arizona qualified for the postseason by clinching its first division title since 1975 and the team s first-ever NFC West crown. It was the team s first playoff appearance since 1998 and first home playoff game since The Cardinals started out the season strong, jumping out to a 7-3 record and a three-game lead in their division. The Cardinals won the NFC West behind a perfect 6-0 division record, but stumbled late in the season with losses to Philadelphia, Minnesota and New England. Those losses had some critics questioning whether the Cardinals deserved a playoff berth. Arizona responded by rattling off three impressive postseason wins. Along the way they earned their first-ever Conference Championship and a meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLIII As the NFC West Champions, the Cardinals hosted their first playoff game since 1947, defeating Atlanta in the Wild Card round. The Cardinals defense limited the Falcons #2 rushing offense to a season-low 60 rushing yards on 24 attempts. Arizona then traveled to Carolina where they faced the heavily favored Panthers. Carolina was the only NFL team to finish the regular season undefeated at home while Arizona was 0-5 on the east coast. Behind the play of WR Larry Fitzgerald and a defense that forced six turnovers (5 INTs), the Cardinals jumped all over the Panthers, winning In what seemed like an unlikely scenario at the outset of the playoffs, the Cardinals returned home the following week to host the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game. Arizona won its first-ever conference title by defeating the Eagles after storming out to a 24-6 halftime lead. The Eagles fought back in the second half to take a lead before the Cardinals went on a 14-play fourth quarter drive that ate up 7:52 and resulted in the game-winning TD. With the win, the Cardinals made their first-ever Super Bowl appearance. In front of a record national television audience of million viewers, the Cardinals fell to the Steelers Down 20-7 entering the fourth quarter, the Cardinals made the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history, taking a lead after a 64-yard TD pass from Kurt Warner to Fitzgerald with under 3:00 remaining. Pittsburgh responded with a 78-yard drive that ended with Santonio Holmes tip-toe TD reception and the game s deciding score in one of the most exciting Super Bowls ever played. WHAT THE CARDINALS ACCOMPLISHED IN 2008 The Cardinals recorded 12 wins in 2008, the most in a single-season in franchise history. They won more playoff games in 2008 (3) than they had in their total playoff history (2) entering the season. LAST WEEK S GAME CARDINALS 51, Packers 45 (OT) January 10, 2010 University of Phoenix Stadium (61,926) It was the highest-scoring playoff game in NFL history and certainly among the greatest ever. The Cards and Packers combined for 96 points, 13 touchdowns and over 1,000 total yards. While the offenses were explosive, it was the AZ defense that came up with the game-winning score on the first series of OT when CB Michael Adams sacked Aaron Rodgers; LB Karlos Dansby snatched the ball midair and returned it for a TD. It was one of three huge defensive plays by Dansby. Against the NFL s #2 defense, The Cards jumped out to a 17-0 early lead and led early in the 3 rd quarter. Green Bay then stormed back behind an inspired effort from Rodgers, tying the game at 38 and again at 45. But while the Packer QB was incredibly good, Arizona s Kurt Warner was even better and cemented his place among the league s greatest postseason passers. He threw for 379 yards and amazingly had more TD passes (5) than incompletions (4). Starting in place of Anquan Boldin (ankle), Steve Breaston had 7 catches for 125 yards and a TD while #3 WR Early Doucet was TDs. Green Bay entered the game with an NFL-best +24 turnover ratio but the Cards converted two early Packer miscues. On the game s first snap, Dansby deflected a Rodgers pass that Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie INT d. After Tim Hightower turned it into a TD, Dansby ended the next GB drive with a forced fumble of Donald Driver that Alan Branch recovered. Doucet cashed in on that takeaway with the first of his 2 TD passes that helped the Cards build a lead. A Warner-to-Fitzgerald TD on the opening drive of the 2 nd half made it but the Pack scored quickly with two Rodgers TD passes and a successful on-side kick in between. A 42-yard Beanie Wells run led to another Fitzgerald TD catch but the Pack answered with a Rodgers scoring pass to James Jones that capped 5 straight TD drives to open the 2 nd half. After Arizona s only punt of the day, GB tied it at 38 on a 1-yard run by FB John Kuhn early in the 4 th. Warner responded with an 80-yard drive and put the Cards back ahead with a TD pass to Breaston. With 1:52 left though the Pack tied it again on Rodgers 11-yard TD to Spencer Havner. At the end of regulation, Warner marched the Cards into position to win but Neil Rackers was wide left on a 34-yard FG attempt in the closing seconds. GB won the toss and got the ball first in OT. On the first snap, Rodgers had Greg Jennings open down the middle but overthrew him. Shortly thereafter, they had a 3 rd -n-6 play at their own 24 when Adams and Dansby combined on the game-winning play. PACKERS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 8 STANDING OUT ON DEFENSE DANSBY MAKES BIG PLAYS ON DEFENSE LB Karlos Dansby made the game s decisive play last week with his 17- yard game winning fumble return for a TD in overtime but that wasn t his only big play of the game. Not by a long shot. Dansby played a part in all three of the Packers turnovers and each turnover resulted in a Cardinals TD: On the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie INT on the first play from scrimmage, Dansby deflected the pass intended for Jordy Nelson into the hands of Rodgers-Cromartie. That led to the Cardinals first TD of the day and a 7-0 lead. On the second play of the following Packers drive, Dansby forced a fumble by receiver Donald Driver that was recovered by DT Alan Branch. The ensuing Cardinals drive resulted in a TD and a 14-0 lead for Arizona. Grabbed the Rodgers fumble on third down in overtime, forced by CB Michael Adams, and returned it 17 yards for the game-winning points. Additionally, quarterback Kurt Warner, tackle Levi Brown, safety Antrel Rolle, punter Ben Graham, special teamer Sean Morey, and kicker Neil Rackers were selected as alternates. The three defensive selections are the most for the Cardinals since 1970 (LB Larry Stallings, DB Roger Wehrli, and DB Larry Wilson) and the Cardinals nine selections over the past two years (five last year) are the most over a two-year span since when they had 10 Pro Bowl selections. Dockett led the Cardinals and all NFL interior defensive linemen with seven sacks on the season in addition to a career-high 15 tackles for loss and 57 tackles (43 solos). Arizona rushed for 1,040 yards on 227 carries (4.6 avg.) over the last nine games, an average of yards per game. Prior to that, the Cardinals averaged 64.9 yards per game on the ground through the first seven games. The duo combined for 51 big plays in the rushing attack, defined as runs of 10 or more yards. As a team, Arizona' 51 runs of 10+ yards on 365 rushing attempts represents a big play percentage of 14.0, which was tied with Dallas for second in the NFL in 09 behind only Carolina (14.5). Ken Whisenhunt praised Leinart for his play after getting called on to start on such short notice. To me that s the essence of a pro, Whisenhunt said of Leinart. Backup quarterbacks are held in high esteem, ones that are successful, because they can do that. That was the question about Matt. That s one of the questions that is answered for me now. The regular season finale vs. the Packers marked the 29 th game Leinart has appeared in. In his 17 career starts, Leinart has completed 289 of 511 passes (56.6%) for 3,360 yards, 13 TDs and 15 INTs. 19 KURT S CANTON CREDENTIALS In the minds of many, Kurt Warner s performance as a Cardinal combined with his earlier success with the Rams has secured an eventual spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. For those not yet decided, perhaps the best case can be made by comparing Warner s career to those of QBs already enshrined -- particularly the 14 modern era quarterbacks enshrined in the last quarter century. None of the 14 can match Kurt in completion percentage, yards per attempt or yards per game. Only Steve Young had a higher career passer rating than Warner s Only Dan Marino had more career 300-yard passing games. Warner s career totals for completions and yards already exceed the totals for five of the 14. His TD total (208) exceeds those of four. And Warner has done it all in fewer games. While the 14 Hall of Famers in question averaged 186 games, Kurt has needed only 124 to rank among them. The late start to his career, improbable emergence and subsequent career twists have become part of his legend. Warner & Tom Brady are among 10 quarterbacks to start at least three Super Bowls. The other eight are in the Hall. Warner, Brett Favre and Peyton Manning are among six players to win multiple MVP awards. The other three Montana, Unitas and Young are in the Hall.
