1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #2 THIS WEEK S GAME After a hard-fought week one win in St. Louis, the Cardinals are on the road again this Sunday in Atlanta. It will be the 25 th all-time regular season meeting between the clubs and a rematch of an 08 Wild Card game in AZ that the Cardinals won en route to their Super Bowl XLIII appearance. Last week, the Cards notched their 8 th straight win over the Rams and 6 th straight in St. Louis thanks to a scrappy victory. Arizona featured many new faces but it was a pair of vets who were most instrumental. All-pro safety Adrian Wilson the longest-tenured Cardinal had 2 INTs, a sack and a blocked FG. Fourth-year WR Steve Breaston not only recorded a career-high 132 receiving yards on seven catches but made a pair of TD-saving plays after Cardinal turnovers. WR Larry Fitzgerald returned from the knee injury suffered in the preseason opener. He and new QB Derek Anderson struggled at times finding a rhythm but the pair clicked when it counted with a 21-yard go-ahead TD with 6:13 to play. The Falcons were also on the road in week one, dropping a tough, defensive-oriented game in OT at Pittsburgh. The game was tied at nine through four full quarters before Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall ended it with the game s only TD a 50-yard jaunt in OT. Falcons WR Roddy White had a career day in the loss, finishing with 13 catches for 111 yards. Arizona is one of just three NFL teams to open 10 with consecutive road games (Miami & Baltimore). Sunday will also be a homecoming for coach Ken Whisenhunt, an Atlanta native who played for both Georgia Tech & the Falcons. FALCONS THE LAST MEETING NFC WILD CARD GAME CARDINALS 30, Falcons 24 January 3, 2009 University of Phoenix Stadium (62,848) Playing their first postseason contest in a decade and first home playoff game since 1947, the Cardinals took on 11-5 Atlanta. The high-powered Falcons entered the game with the league s #2 rusher (RB Michael Turner) and the Offensive Rookie of the Year (QB Matt Ryan). But the Cards defense was sensational, bottling up Turner (42 rushing yards and 2.3 yards/carry were both season lows), harassing Ryan (2 INTs, 1 fumble and 3 sacks), and scoring points on its own with a TD and safety. On the Cards first scoring drive, it was Edgerrin James 3 prior runs that perfectly set-up a flea-flicker. James took the hand-off, then flipped it back to Kurt Warner who fired 42 yards downfield to Larry Fitzgerald who leapt between two defenders to come down with the ball in the end zone. Early in the 2 nd, Atlanta got on the board with a 30-yard Jason Elam FG but the Cards answered quickly. On 3 rd -n-9, Warner tossed a short pass to Anquan Boldin who turned upfield and raced 71 yards down the left sideline for the TD. The Falcons would come back. Turner s 7- yard TD run with 2:55 left in the 1 st half capped a 14-play, 77-yard drive. On the 3 rd play of the next drive, Warner s pass to went off the hands of Jerheme Urban and was INT d by Chevis Jackson at the AZ23, setting up a Ryan TD pass to TE Justin Peelle that made it Atlanta at the half. On the 2 nd snap after intermission, DT Darnell Dockett made the game s pivotal play when he blew up a hand-off between Ryan and Turne. FS Antrel Rolle picked the ball out of the air and returned it 27 yards for the go-ahead TD. After the next two Atlanta drives went 3-n-out, the Cards took over at their own 24 with 10:31 to go in the 3 rd. Through a mix of run & pass, including a 6- yard Warner scramble on 3 rd -n-5, the Cards chewed 7:43 off the clock on a long drive that ended with Tim Hightower s 4-yard TD run. Rookie CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie ended the next series with a pick off Ryan. That drive ended with a Ben Graham punt that was downed at the ATL3 and on the next play, Antonio Smith sacked Ryan in the end zone for a safety. The Falcons scored on a 5-yard Roddy White TD pass from Ryan with 4:19 to go to trim it to 6 and AZ then took over at its own 20 with 4:19 to go. Two first downs forced Atlanta to burn all 3 timeouts. Then facing a 3 rd -n-16 at the ATL46 with 2:17 left, Warner hit TE Stephen Spach with a 23 yard pass that effectively ended the game. 3 LAST WEEK S GAME CARDINALS 17, Rams 13 September 12, 2010 Edward Jones Dome (52,440) The Cards opened the NFL season on the road for the 18th time in 23 years with a week 1 date at St. Louis against 2010 s top pick Sam Bradford. Arizona also featured many new faces but it was a pair of vets who led the team to its 8 th straight win over the Rams and 6 th straight in St. Louis. All-Pro safety Adrian Wilson the longest-tenured Cardinal had 2 INTs, a sack and a blocked FG. Just as critical was the play of 4 th -year WR Steve Breaston, who not only recorded a career-high 132 receiving yards on 7 catches but made a pair of TD-saving plays after Cardinal turnovers. WR Larry Fitzgerald returned from the knee injury suffered in the preseason opener. He and new QB Derek Anderson struggled at times with their timing but the pair clicked when it counted, connecting on a 21-yard goahead TD with 6:13 to play. Arizona s opening drive reached the SL22 but Tim Hightower fumbled on a hit by O.J. Otogwe and Bradley Fletcher returned it 43 yards before Breaston chased him down at the AZ32. Josh Brown s subsequent 34-yard FG try was blocked by Wilson. Adrian then halted the Rams next drive with a pick off Bradford. Early in the 2 nd quarter, Anderson led a 10-play drive that ended with Jay Feely s 22- yard FG and a 3-0 AZ lead. Later in the 2nd, a 36-yard Bradford pass to Danny Amendola set-up a 46-yard Brown FG that tied it with 5:28 left in the first half. The Cards then pulled ahead with a 5-play 76-yard TD drive entirely on the ground. After consecutive LaRod Stephens-Howling runs of 21 and 15 yards, Hightower gained 19 and 20 and then punched it in from a yard out. Just before intermission, though, the Rams moved deep into AZ territory thanks mostly to Mark Clayton s 39-yard catch to the 9. On the final play of the half, Bradford converted a 4 th -n-goal at the 1 with a TD pass to WR Laurent Robinson that tied it at 10. Midway thru the 3 rd, Brown s 25-yard FG put the Rams up They were poised to add to it a short time later when DE C.J. Ah You sacked Anderson forcing a fumble that DT Clifton Ryan scooped up at the 28. He was racing toward the goal-line before a hustling Breaston stripped him at the 4 and the fumble was recovered in the end zone for a touchback by C Lyle Sendlein. Early in the 4 th, the Cards were deep in STL territory but rookie WR Max Komar fumbled at the 4 and the Rams recovered. The Cards then went ahead with 6:13 to play when Anderson ended a 7-play, 86-yard drive with a 21-yard TD pass to Larry Fitzgerald. The QB was 6-7 for 101 yards on the drive with 2-38 to Breaston. Bradford and the Rams would not go quietly and moved to the AZ21 at the 2:00 warning. Facing a 4 th -n-10 from that spot with 1:47 left, new FS Kerry Rhodes INT d Bradford and returned the pick 65 yards to the SL29 to presumably ice the game. However, on the next play Hightower fumbled after a 4-yard gain. The Rams advanced to the AZ36 with :05 left but Bradford s final toss into the end zone was INT d by Wilson to end the game. ADRIAN DOES A LITTLE OVER EVERYTHING SS Adrian Wilson recorded two INTs, a sack, and a blocked FG in last week s win over St. Louis. Wilson became the first NFL player to record an INT, sack and blocked FG in a game since Julius Peppers accomplished the feat on 11/28/04 vs. Tampa Bay. Wilson also became the first Cardinals player in history to record two INTs, a sack and a blocked FG in the same game. I think we all know who Adrian Wilson is, his reputation, what type of player he is, but when he does what he did Sunday, it just goes to further solidify the legend of who he is, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said after the game. Wilson s block of Josh Brown s 34-yard FG attempt last week was the first FG block of his career. He also has one career blocked punt (10/26/03 vs. SF). With his two INTs against the Rams, Wilson now has 25 for his career, passing Kwamie Lassiter for sixth place on the franchise career list. Franchise Interception Leaders WILSON NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK INTs Player (Years) On Tuesday, Wilson was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week 52 Larry Wilson ( ) for his performance against the Rams. 46 Aeneas Williams ( ) 40 Roger Wehrli ( ) It is the fourth career Player of the Week selection for Wilson. He was first 30 Night Train Lane ( ) honored in 2002 following a week 7 victory against Dallas, again in week 4 29 Pat Fischer ( ) of 04 after a Cardinals win vs. New Orleans and last year after a week 7 25 Adrian Wilson (2001-present) win at the New York Giants. Wilson now has the most defensive Player of 24 Kwamie Lassiter ( ) the Week awards in team history (Antrel Rolle and Aeneas Williams, three 22 Norm Thompson ( ) each). Among all-time Cardinals, only quarterback Kurt Warner (five) has 21 Jerry Davis ( ) more selections overall. Ray Ramsey ( ) Wilson now has an INT in the last three games against the Rams. He had an INT in each of the Cards two games against the Rams in 09. In his last eight games against St. Louis Wilson has tallied seven INTs. With his second quarter sack of QB Sam Bradford, Wilson now has 21.5 career sacks, 7.5 of which have come against St. Louis. Wilson has more sacks against the Rams than he does against any other team in the NFL. Last week s game marked the second multi-int game of Wilson s career and the first since recording three INTs against Dallas on 10/20/02. It also marked the fifth time Wilson has recorded an INT and a sack in the same game. Cardinals vs. Falcons 3 of 34

4 BREASTON S EFFORT SAVES THE DAY WR Steve Breaston, now in his fourth NFL season, is being counted on as a leader for the Cardinals. He moved into the role as the team s second receiver in 2010 and his play in last week s regular season opener in St. Louis shows Breaston is more than capable of filling a leadership role. Despite a career day receiving, what most people wanted to talk about following the game was Breaston s extraordinary effort in stopping two potential TDs following Cards turnovers that saved the Cardinals in a game they went on to win by just four points. The biggest play of the game came with Arizona trailing with just over 7:00 minutes remaining in the third quarter. QB Derek Anderson was sacked by Rams DE C.J. Ah You and fumbled. Rams DT Clifton Ryan recovered the fumble and looked to be headed into the end zone for a TD. After returning the ball 18 yards to the AZ 4- yard line, Ryan was chased down and stripped from behind by a trailing Breaston. Cards C Lyle Sendlein recovered the Rams fumble in the AZ end zone, resulting in a touchback and Arizona regaining possession at its own 20-yard line. "I scooped it up and I was trying to make a hustle play," Ryan said after the game. "I looked at the Jumbotron, and I didn't see anyone for a split second. He came out of nowhere and made a play. Steve is a great player. In my opinion, one of the most underrated players in this league. My hat's off to him." All-Pro DT Darnell Dockett couldn t have praised Breaston highly enough for his extra effort in the win. I pulled him to the side after the game and told him that I have never been more proud of a person, Dockett said. That s what you want on your team, you want winners. Things like that can make the difference in the game. Breaston also saved a potential TD with his tackle of Rams CB Bradley Fletcher following a first quarter Cards turnover. Fletcher recovered a Cards fumble at the STL 21-yard line and returned it 43 yards to the AZ 32-yard line before Breaston chased him down. Arizona s defense held and five plays later, on the Rams ensuing drive, Adrian Wilson blocked Brown s FG attempt. I think Steve not only played great for us offensively but he saved us twice, added QB Derek Anderson. Two of the better hustle plays I have ever seen. Running the guy down on the first fumble and then on my fumble to strip the guy and then we get at the 20. It was very impressive. Steve doesn t really say much. He just goes out there and works and I think everybody likes that about him. Perhaps the highest praise for Breaston came from head coach Ken Whisenhunt. When you talk about kids watching this game and how it should be played, if you want to point to one thing, that play (forcing Ryan fumble) is what you point to, Whisenhunt said Monday. The hustle, the never give up, the never quit. That play is always going to be special because it was our opening game, against a division opponent, on the road. To make a play that I think had a huge impact on the game was special. He had a very good game as an offensive player, but that play really distinguished who Steve is and what he means to our team. MOMENT OF THE WEEK? Steve Breaston s game-changing forced fumble play against the Rams last week has been nominated for the GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Week Award. The award recognizes the best moment or play of the week that represents determination and perseverance. Fans can vote online at NFL.com/gmc until Friday at 9:00 AM (MST) and the winner will be announced later that day. Breaston is up against Wes Welker s two-td performance in his first game back from knee surgery and Pittsburgh s OT win vs. Atlanta. A CAREER DAY RECEIVING In addition to making game-saving plays by running down Rams defenders, WR Steve Breaston also found time to post a career day as a receiver. Breaston filled up the stat sheet in the Cards victory over the Rams, establishing a career-high with 132 receiving yards on seven receptions in the win, his fourth career regular season 100-yard game and first since 11/10/08 vs. San Francisco. Breaston s 132 receiving yards were the fourth-most in the NFL in week one behind Cincinnati s Chad Ochocinco (159), Chicago s Matt Forte (151) and Dallas Miles Austin (146). They represented the 2 nd most yards in a winning effort (Forte). A Monster Second Half After catching one pass for 12 yards in the first half, Breaston came up big for the Cardinals after they fell behind midway through the third quarter. In addition to his forced fumble that saved a TD, Breaston had six receptions for 120 yards in the second half. At one point between the third and fourth quarters, six of Anderson s 11 completions were to Breaston, covering 120 yards. The other five completions, to four different receivers, went for 56 yards. Breaston had three receptions of 20+ yards in the game, including receptions of 22, 35 and 27 yards. Three of the Cardinals four longest pass plays resulted in connections between Breaston and Anderson. Totaled three receptions for 73 yards on third down plays. CARDS CONTINUE ROAD SUCCESS Arizona finished with a 6-2 record and allowed just 139 points on the road in 09, an average of 17.4 points per game, tied with Dallas for the second-lowest total in the NFL. Fewest Points Allowed Per Game on the Road 2009 Team G Pts PPG 1. NY Jets t. Arizona t. Dallas San Diego Indianapolis After the team s win at St. Louis last week, the Cardinal are again near the top of that list to start the 2010 season. The 13 points allowed by the Cardinals tied Dallas for the third-lowest total allowed on the road in week one, trailing only Miami (10) and Baltimore (9). The win in St. Louis marked the third consecutive season the Cards won their road opener. It marked the first time the Cardinals have won their road opener in three consecutive seasons since Arizona is now 7-2 in its last nine regular season road games. The Cardinals joined the Packers, Dolphins and Ravens as the only four teams to win on the road in week one. NFL WEEK 1 DEFENSE LEADS OFFENSE In week 1 of the NFL season, low scoring games were the norm. While 5 teams scored more than 30 points, the league average in week 1 was 18.3 points. Half of the week 1 winners did so while scoring fewer than 20 points. The Cardinals were one of those eight teams to win while scoring 19 points or fewer - Chicago 19, Arizona 17, Tampa 17, Miami 15, Pittsburgh 15, New Orleans 14, Washington 13, Baltimore 10. 5 WINNING IN THE WEST The victory over St. Louis last week marked Arizona s eighth consecutive win over the Rams. That represents the second-longest winning streak against any franchise in team history, trailing only the nine consecutive wins over the Eagles between The win improved the Cardinals record to 14-5 against NFC West opponents under Ken Whisenhunt. Arizona has now won 12 of its last 14 games against division opponents. WR Larry Fitzgerald and C Lyle Sendlein were named the offensive captains. On defense, SS Adrian Wilson and DT Darnell Dockett were named captains and P Ben Graham and RB Jason Wright were named special teams captains. Captains on each team will wear a captain s patch on their games jerseys for both home and road contests. Fitzgerald serves as a captain for the second consecutive season while Sendlein earned the title for the first time. Both Wilson and Dockett are serving as captains for the second consecutive season, with Wilson earning captain for the third time in his career (2007, 09). Graham was named captain for the second time, also serving as a special teams captain for the Jets in Wright is a first-time team captain. CARDS WIN A GOOD SIGN Since 1978, when the NFL adopted the 16-game schedule, and excluding the abbreviated season of 1982, teams that are victorious on Kickoff Weekend are more than twice as likely to reach the playoffs than losers of their opening game: Of the 458 teams which won openers 243 went to the playoffs (142 won division titles). Of the 458 teams which lost openers 107 went to the playoff (60 won division titles). In 2009, 10 of the 12 playoff teams Baltimore, Dallas, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Minnesota, New England, New Orleans, New York Jets, Philadelphia, and San Diego were victorious on Kickoff Weekend. BEGINNING ON THE ROAD For the 18 th time in 23 seasons since moving to Arizona in 1988, the Cardinals play two of their first three games on the road in Last week s contest in St. Louis marked the 21 st time in 23 seasons that the Cards began the season away from home. This week, the Cardinals travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons. Arizona, Baltimore and Miami are the only teams that open the 2010 season with back-to-back road contests. Not only have the Cardinals had to deal with the challenge of starting nearly every season on the road, in four different seasons the first two games were away and in three other seasons the Cards started the first three games on the road. The 2010 season marks the seventh time since 1988 that the Cards have had three of their first four games on the road. WHISENHUNT S GEORGIA ROOTS Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt has strong roots in the state of Georgia, where he grew up, attended school through college and played his first few NFL seasons. Whisenhunt was born at Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, but was raised in Augusta after moving there at age two. Home of the Augusta National Golf Club and Masters, the town is synonymous with the sport Whisenhunt grew up playing. He got so good in fact, that after his nine-year NFL playing career ended in 1993, he took a year off and played enough golf to earn a spot in the 1994 U.S. Mid-Amateur at Hazeltine before continuing on into coaching football. Whisenhunt has even played the famed course back home a few times. Whisenhunt graduated from Augusta s Richmond Academy before he went on to attended Georgia Tech where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering after walking on to the football team. He finished his Tech career ranked second on the Yellow Jackets receiving yardage list (1,264 yards) and fourth in career receptions (82) as well as being named a consensus All-ACC and honorable mention All-America selection as a senior in Whisenhunt then continued his football career near home as he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 12 th round of the 1985 NFL Draft. Whisenhunt went on to play the first four years of his nine-year NFL career in Atlanta. THROWN INTO THE FIRE Long before he became a successful NFL head coach, Ken Whisenhunt first made a name for himself in Atlanta nearly 30 years ago with a memorable college debut. On November 8, 1980, Whisenhunt was a true freshman, walk-on wide receiver/defensive back on a 1-7 Georgia Tech team that hosted undefeated and #1 ranked Notre Dame. On the game s second drive, Yellow Jackets starting QB Mike Kelley was forced from the game. Unbeknownst to Whisenhunt, the back-up QB was also not available, leaving Georgia Tech with very few options at QB. The one head coach Bill Curry went with was the 18-year-old from Augusta (listed in the game program as a 6-3, 190-pound receiver) who had played some high school QB but had never taken a college snap at any position. With 5:16 to play in the first quarter of a scoreless game, Whisenhunt was not only forced to take over against the nation s #1 team but after an Irish punt, his first college snap would come from his own 5-yard line. Tech ran three times and failed to produce a first down on his first series. Whisenhunt also remembers his first pass clearly. It was a little roll-out to the left and I let it go, he said. It was a beautiful spiral. The only problem was it landed five rows deep in the bleachers. Whisenhunt eventually settled down, though he didn t get the chance to put up gaudy passing numbers. He completed three of his five pass attempts for 29 yards, the bulk of which came on a 23-yarder to fellow freshman Jeff Keisler that set up a Georgia Tech field goal in the second quarter. Hampering his statistical performance may have been the fact that he played through a stress fracture in his leg that went unnoticed until after the game. Notre Dame kicked a game-tying field goal with a little over four minutes to play that denied Tech the upset win but they did hold on for the surprising 3-3 tie. Whisenhunt s leg injury kept him from playing any more that season and while he did see a little time at QB the following year, he eventually migrated full-time to the tight end/h-back position that he played for nine years in the NFL. 7 ANDERSON SHINES IN 4 th QUARTER QB Derek Anderson, making his first start for the Cardinals, completed 22 of 41 passes for 297 yards, a TD and a passer rating of 85.1 last week against the Rams. Where Anderson really made his mark was in the fourth quarter. With Arizona trailing the Rams 13-10, Anderson completed 7 of 9 pass attempts for 110 yards, a TD and a passer rating of in the fourth quarter. His passer rating in the fourth quarter was the best in the NFL in week one. Fourth Quarter Passing Leaders NFL Rate Player (Team) Att Com % Yds TD INT Derek Anderson (Ari) David Garrard (Jax) Peyton Manning (Ind) Tom Brady (NE) Josh Freeman (TB) On the Cardinals fourth quarter, game-winning TD drive, Anderson completed 6 of 7 attempts for 101 yards, including the 21-yard TD strike to Fitzgerald. Arizona was called for two penalties (15 combined yards) on the drive. Anderson s 297 passing yards were the 4 th -most in the NFL in week one and 2 nd most among winning QBs (Chicago s Jay Cutler, 372) AN OVERVIEW OF ANDERSON After he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round (213 th overall) in 2005, QB Derek Anderson was waived by the Ravens and went on to spend his first five seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Anderson served as a backup during his first two seasons in Cleveland, appearing in five games (three starts) in Then came the 2007 season, when Anderson replaced starter Charlie Frye in the season opener. Anderson entered the game and went on to start the final 15 games. In leading the Browns to a 10-5 record over his 15 starts, Anderson completed 298 of 527 passes (56.5%) for 3,787 yards and 29 TDs on his way to his first career Pro Bowl berth. Anderson Vitals: In 2007, became the first Browns QB to earn a Pro Bowl selection since Bernie Kosar in 1987 Led the Browns to a 10-5 record in 07, their most wins since 1994 Established a franchise record with seven consecutive home victories in 07 Tied for the second-highest single-season TD passes in franchise history with 29 in 07 For his career, has completed 609 of 1,150 passes (52.9%) for 7,380 yards, 47 TDs and 45 INTs Has a career record of as a starter Has five career starts with a passer rating of Has four career 300-yard games MILLER RETURNS A COACH When QBs coach Chris Miller returns to Atlanta this week, he will back in the place where he began his NFL career. Miller was the Falcons first-round selection (13 th overall) in the 1987 NFL Draft. He went on to play seven of his 10 NFL seasons in Atlanta, completing 1,129 of 2,089 attempts for 14,066 yards, 87 TDs and 72 INTs. Miller was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1991 after throwing for 3,103 yards and 26 TDs, also starting both postseason games for Atlanta that year, throwing for 469 yards and three TDs in the playoffs. Miller s 14,066 passing yards, 2,089 attempts and 1,129 completions all rank second in Falcons franchise history behind Steve Bartowski. His 87 TD passes are tied with Chris Chandler for third behind Bartowski. From , Miller played alongside Cards head coach Ken Whisenhunt in Atlanta. Miller threw the first-ever TD pass in the Georgia Dome (14 yards to Michael Haynes, 9/6/92 vs. NYJ). He holds the same distinction at the venue in which the Cards played last week. His 12-yard pass to Isaac Bruce (11/12/95) was the first TD pass at Trans World Dome (now Edward Jones Dome). HALL HAS A SPOT AT HOME After an impressive showing in training camp in Flagstaff, rookie free agent QB Max Hall flashed the ability that made him a record-breaking QB at BYU during preseason action, earning him the role as the Cardinals backup. During preseason, Hall completed 16 of 27 attempts for 285 yards, a TD and an INT. He also rushed for 14 yards and a TD on five carries. According to head coach Ken Whisenhunt, there is more to Hall than stats. There have been a number of things that you try to judge the quarterback position other than his completion percentage or things like that, Whisenhunt said. I have seen Max handle those things very well. That is definitely part of the progression of why you feel comfortable with him. He is not shy about expressing his emotions and some of the best competitors I have ever been around are like that. Hall improved rapidly during preseason action, putting on his best display in the preseason finale vs. Washington. In that game, Hall completed 7 of 9 attempts for 126 yards and rushed for 19 yards on two carries. In three possessions, Hall led the Cardinals to two TDs and a FG, culminating in his sixyard TD run in which he dove for the pylon just before going out of bounds. Now that he has earned the roster spot, Hall is now back playing football where he began as a youth. Hall is a Mesa, AZ native who led Mountain View High School to a 14-0 record and state championship as a junior. He came back as a senior and posted a 13-1 record and took the team to the state title game again that year. SKELTON COMPLETES RUN FOR ROSTER SPOT Rookie QB John Skelton had his welcome to the NFL moment in his first preseason game. The Cardinals fifth round pick (155 th overall) entered the game against Houston with Arizona trailing 16-6 with just 6.45 remaining in the fourth quarter. He led a charge that lifted Arizona to a victory, finishing the game by completing 5 of 6 pass attempts for 84 yards, a TD, and a perfect passer rating of in his NFL debut. Not bad for a first impression. Despite seeing limited action through the remainder of preseason as the Cardinals evaluated the top of the QB rotation, Skelton showed enough during preseason to earn him a spot on the 53-man roster as the team s third QB. Skelton, a native of El Paso, TX and the nephew of Texans minority owner Javier Loya, played his college ball at Fordham University. His selection by the Cardinals in the fifth round made Skelton the highest draft pick from Fordham since 1955 and the first QB ever selected from the school. While at Fordham, Skelton set school career records with 9,923 passing yards, 69 TD passes, 802 completions and 1,363 attempts. Cardinals vs. Falcons 7 of 34

8 CARDS UNDER THE WHIZ Head coach Ken Whisenhunt has had an impressive run in his first three-plus seasons with the Cardinals, earning him a four-year contract extension with a team option for a fifth. Including the postseason, Arizona has posted 32 wins under Whisenhunt, the fourth-highest total among head coaches in franchise history. In becoming one of the NFL s top head coaches, Whisenhunt has put together an impressive list of achievements in his first three-plus seasons: The Cardinals earned NFC West titles in 2008 and 09, earning their first back-to-back division titles since Another NFC West title in 2010 would give the franchise an unprecedented third consecutive division crown. Arizona s win over Green Bay in the 2009 Wild Card matchup gave the Cardinals wins in the postseason in backto-back years for the first time in franchise history. The Cardinals have won twice as many playoffs games under Whisenhunt (4) than they had won in their total playoff history (2) entering his tenure. Under Whisenhunt, the Cardinals have appeared in six playoff contests in three years, after appearing in seven total postseason games in the franchise s history prior to his arrival. Arizona finished with a 10-6 record in 09, giving the Cardinals 10+ wins in the regular season for the first time since 1976 (10-4). Whisenhunt is the first head coach in franchise history with a.500 record or better in each of his first three seasons. The Cardinals were 8-8 in 2007, 9-7 in 2008 and 10-6 this season. If the Cardinals post a record of.500 or better in 2010, Whisenhunt will join Don Coryell ( ) as the only head coaches in franchise history with a.500 record or better in four consecutive seasons. The Cardinals finished with a 4-4 record at University of Phoenix Stadium in 09, making Whisenhunt the first Cardinals coach to post a.500 record or better at home in three straight seasons since Don Coryell posted four consecutive seasons above.500 between Whisenhunt is the first head coach since Charley Winner ( ) to post a.500 record or better at home in each of his first three seasons. The Cardinals started the 2009 season with a 5-0 record on the road for the first time since The Cardinals have posted a 14-5 record against NFC West opponents under Whisenhunt. Led the Cardinals to the NFC West title in 2008, their first division title since Led the Cardinals to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance in 2008 and more wins in a single season (12) than any coach in franchise history. The Cardinals win over the Atlanta Falcons in the 2008 Wild Card Game was the first home playoff victory in 61 years. With the win over Seattle in the 2008 regular season finale, the Cardinals finished the 2008 regular season with a 9-7 record, matching their best regular season record since the franchise moved to Arizona in In 55 games total games played during Whisenhunt s tenure, the Cardinals have scored 20-or-more points in 41 of them (74%) and 30+ points in 22 (40%). The Cardinals win in last week s opener gives the Cards a 7-2 record in the last nine road games under Whisenhunt. WHISENHUNT WINS NUMBER 32 Arizona s win in St. Louis last week gave Ken Whisenhunt his 32 nd victory (regular and postseason) as the Cardinals head coach. That total is good for fourth-place on the franchise career wins list. With four more victories, Whisenhunt will move past Charlie Winner (35) for third-place all-time in franchise history. Most Wins By A Cardinals Head Coach Wins Coach (Years) 42 Don Coryell ( ) 39 Jim Hanifan ( ) 35 Charley Winner ( ) 32 Ken Whisenhunt (2007-present) 29 Vince Tobin ( ) With nine wins in 2010, Whisenhunt would become just the fourth head coach in franchise history to post three consecutive seasons with a winning record. Head Coaches With 3 Consecutive Winning Seasons Coach Years Records Jimmy Conzelman ; 9-3; 11-1 Don Coryell ; 11-3; 10-4 Jim Hanifan ; 8-7-1; 9-7 Nine wins would also give him 40 as head coach and place him alongside Coryell as the only coaches in franchise history with 40+ wins. A record of.500 or better in 2010 and Whisenhunt would join Coryell ( ) as the only coaches in team history with a.500 or better in four consecutive seasons. THE WHISENHUNT ERA Below is a breakdown of the Cardinals regular season win-loss record during Ken Whisenhunt s tenure: In NFC West Games 14-5 In Postseason Games 4-2 At Home 15-8 On the Road Outdoors Indoors 15-7 When won the turnover battle 18-1 When lost the turnover battle 2-18 When even in the turnover battle 8-2 When scored first 15-6 When Opp. Scores First Out-rush opponent 18-3 Cardinals have 100-yard rusher 8-0 Yielding 20 Points or Less 17-4 Scoring 20 Points or More 27-9 Scoring 30 Points or More 21-2 BACK IN FIRST After defeating the St. Louis Rams last week in the opener, the Cardinals are in a first place tie in the NFC West with Seattle. First place is a spot familiar for the Cardinals over the last few seasons. In 2008, Arizona either shared the division lead or held it outright every week of the season. It marked just the third time in franchise history the team spent every week of the season in the division lead. In 2009, Arizona held or shared the division lead for the final 11 weeks. Including 2010, the Cardinals have now held or shared the division lead in 29 of 35 possible weeks dating back to Cardinals vs. Falcons 8 of 34

9 GRIMM ENTERS THE HALL On Saturday, August 7 th, Cardinals assistant head coach/run game coordinator/offensive line coach Russ Grimm was in Canton, OH where he was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A member of the famed Hogs offensive line, Grimm started 11 seasons at guard for the Redskins ( ) and helped lead the team to four Super Bowl appearances and three victories. He was a four-time Pro Bowl selection and was a first-team selection to the 1980s all-decade team. At the induction ceremony, Grimm was introduced by Joe Bugel, the Redskins offensive line coach during Grimm s playing days. Bugel later served as head coach for the Cardinals ( ). In his seventh year as a finalist, Grimm s dream was realized on February 6, 2010 when it was announced that he was among the seven chosen for the 2010 Hall of Fame class. He joined WR Jerry Rice, RB Emmitt Smith, LB Rickey Jackson, DL John Randle, and two senior candidates, CB Dick LeBeau and RB Floyd Little. DAVIS MAKES CHANGES During the 2009 regular season, Bill Davis made significant strides with the Cardinals defense in his first season as defensive coordinator. Two areas Davis zeroed in on were cutting down on points allowed and allowing fewer points in the red zone. During the 09 regular season, the Cardinals defense allowed 325 points, which was the fifth-lowest total for the franchise since the NFL went to a 16-game schedule in Fewest Points Allowed (1978 to 2008) Points Year The Cardinals also showed drastic improvement in red zone defense in The Cardinals allowed 22 TDs in 47 trips in the red zone, and their (46.8) TD percentage was the 9 th best in the NFL. In contrast, during the 2008 season the Cardinals opponents had 35 TDs in 55 trips inside the red zone, a 63.6 TD percentage, which ranked 28 th overall in After undergoing significant change in the offseason, the Cardinals defense features five new starters in Gone from the 2009 squad are Karlos Dansby, Antrel Rolle, Bryant McFadden, Bertrand Berry and Chike Okeafor. To replace them, the Cardinals brought in veterans FS Kerry Rhodes, LB Joey Porter and LB Paris Lenon. Second-year player CB Greg Toler earned a starting spot with his play in preseason as did 2010 second-round draft pick LB Daryl Washington. Also seeing playing time in 2010 are first round draft pick DT Dan Williams and second-year players such as LBs Will Davis, Reggie Walker and S Rashad Johnson. The most recent players added to the mix are veterans CB Brandon McDonald and LB Cyril Obiozor, both signed just prior to the regular season opener last week. Henderson, entering his 10 th season as an NFL assistant, takes the place of Teryl Austin who left to take over as the defensive coordinator at Florida. After spending 16 years as an assistant at the college level, Henderson entered the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 as a defensive backs coach. After five seasons in Baltimore, Henderson served as the defensive coordinator with the NY Jets and Detroit Lions. Robinson enters his fourth season as an NFL assistant, having served as an offensive assistant with the Dallas Cowboys from Robinson takes the place of Curtis Modkins, who left in the offseason to become the offensive coordinator/running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills.
