1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #15 THIS WEEK S GAME The Cardinals host the Chicago Bears in the home finale of 2012 at University of Phoenix Stadium. The only two charter members of the NFL still in existence, the Cardinals and Bears face off for the 89 th time in a series that dates back to The Cardinals snapped a nine-game winless streak last week after taking down the visiting Detroit Lions at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals scored four TDs off Detroit turnovers, including a franchise record 102-yard INT return by CB Greg Toler. A milestone game, SS Adrian Wilson became just the sixth player in league history with at least 25 sacks and 25 INTs in his career. Rookie QB Ryan Lindley also earned his first career victory and S Rashad Johnson scored his first career TD on a 53-yard INT return in the second quarter. Sunday s game against the Bears features two of the NFL s toughest and most opportunistic defenses. Arizona features the NFL s #4 ranked pass defense and leads the NFL with 22 INTs on the season. Chicago s defense is ranked 5 th overall and 6 th against the pass. The Bears lead the NFL with 37 takeaways, with their 21 INTs ranked second behind Arizona. Both defenses will be tested through the air, as this game also features two of the NFL s most talented WRs in Arizona s Larry Fitzgerald and Chicago s Brandon Marshall. Arizona CB Patrick Peterson who recorded his seventh INT of the year last week while defending the Lions Calvin Johnson will draw another one of the league s top receivers in Marshall. Injuries have continued to hurt the Cardinals in 2012, particularly on offense. Last week QB Kevin Kolb and starting C Rich Ohrnberger (who himself had replaced the injured Lyle Sendlein) became the 7th and 8th players on that side of the ball to be placed on injured reserve. In all, 16 Arizona players have combined to miss a total of 88 games in Next week, the Cardinals finish the 2012 season with a visit to San Francisco while Chicago travels to Detroit. A week after throwing 5 INTs vs. Carolina, Kurt Warner matched his career-high with 5 scoring strikes. Warner TD passes ended the first four AZ drives and a pair of Neil Rackers FGs gave AZ points on its first 6 straight possessions. Two of the TDs went to Larry Fitzgerald who had 123 yards on 9 catches stepping up in the absence of fellow wideout Anquan Boldin (inactive/ankle). Behind a solid overall effort from the AZ o-line, Tim Hightower (77 yards) and Beanie Wells (72 yards) helped the Cardinal run game roll up 131 yards in the first half and 182 for the game. With the win, AZ remained a perfect 4-0 on the road in 09 and upped its overall mark to 5-3. For the 5 th time in 8 games, the Cards scored a TD on their opening drive. This one was an 11-yard Fitzgerald reception that capped an 8-play, 81-yard opening series. A key play was a 23-yard completion to Steve Breaston on 3 rd -n-10, the first of 8 straight third down conversions to open the game. Also pivotal was the game s 4 th play when Bears DT Tommie Harris was ejected for slugging AZ guard Deuce Lutui. Chicago did answer Arizona s opening TD drive with one of its own. A 42-yard Jay Cutler to Devin Hester pass led to the 1 st of TE Greg Olson s 3 TD catches on the day. But with a mix of run and pass, the Cards built a 28-7 lead thanks to Warner TD passes on the next three drives 6 yards to TE Ben Patrick, 17 to Fitzgerald and 15 to TE Anthony Becht. In the final minute of the first half, Bears kicker Robbie Gould was lined up for a 48-yard FG try but Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie deflected it. Antrel Rolle caught the miss 8 yards deep in the end zone and returned it 59 yards to the CHI49 with 0:22 left. It was enough time for Warner to move the team into position for Neil Rackers 43-yard FG as the half expired that gave AZ a 31-7 halftime lead. The lead grew to 34-7 on a 30-yard Rackers FG midway thru the 3 rd that provided that quarter s only points. A 3-yard Olsen TD catch made it and on the next AZ series Matt Leinart replaced Warner. However a pick by CB Zackary Bowman led to another Olsen TD that made it a 13-point game with 9:04 to go and Warner went back in. The Cardinal lead remained 13 when Chicago took over at its own 17 with 6:41 left. But on that drive s 3 rd play, S Matt Ware INT d Cutler and returned it 18 yards to the 17. It set up the game s final score, Warner s 4-yard TD to Breaston. CARDINALS BEARS Team Qtr. THE HISTORIC CONNECTION The Cardinals have a strong connection to the city of Chicago, where the franchise was founded as one of the charter members of the NFL. When the Cards called Chicago home, the team was located at the corner of 61 st and Racine. The street, along with faded jerseys from the University of Chicago, provided a name for the team, the Racine Cardinals. The Racine Cardinals became the Chicago Cardinals in 1922 when a team from Racine, WI joined the league. The same year the Cards would move into their new home in Comiskey Park, which they shared with baseball s White Sox for the next 37 years. Charles W. Bidwill, Sr., a vice president of the Chicago Bears, the Cardinals cross-town rivals, bought the team for $50,000 in 1932 and divested himself of his holdings in the Bears. That began a continuous period of family ownership of the Cardinals which continues to this day. The Cardinals are the oldest continuously owned franchise in pro football. Violet Bidwill assumed control of the franchise for 15 years following her husband s passing in Under Violet, the team won their second consecutive Western Division championship and made an appearance in the 1948 NFL championship game, a 7-0 loss in Philadelphia. Violet also oversaw the team s move from Chicago to St. Louis in The Cardinals and the Chicago Bears are the only two of the 11 charter members of the NFL still in existence. The Bears, originally based in Decatur, IL, moved to Chicago in 1921 where they were known as the Chicago Staleys for a year before becoming the Chicago Bears in WHERE HE GOT HIS START Just like the Cardinals franchise, General Manager Rod Graves got his start in the NFL in Chicago. Graves entered the league as a regional scout with the Bears in 1984, holding that position until 1993 when he was promoted to director of college scouting. A year later, he was promoted again, this time to director of player personnel, a position he held until We were very fortunate to have some very talented players some of the best to ever play the game, in my opinion, Graves has said of his time in Chicago, which included the 1985 Super Bowl Championship. I walked into a situation that had largely been put together by Jim Finks, the former GM, Bill Tobin (former player personnel director) and one of their former scouts, Jim Palmer. Those guys put together a very talented football team and I just happened to walk in at the right time Graves came to Arizona as the Assistant to the President in He was promoted to Vice President of Football Operations following the 2002 season and he is currently in his sixth season as the Cardinals General Manager. SEVEN SOLD OUT SEASONS If this week s matchup against the Chicago Bears sells out as expected, it will be the team s 73 rd consecutive sellout, every game (preseason, regular season and postseason) played in seven seasons at University of Phoenix Stadium. Dating back to the inaugural season in 06, the Cardinals hold a home record, including postseason. With the win over the Lions last week, Arizona improved to 4-3 at home this season, extending Ken Whisenhunt s franchise record for consecutive seasons with a.500 record or better at home to six seasons. 4 LAST WEEK S GAME Game 14 CARDINALS 38, Lions 10 December 16, 2012 University of Phoenix Stadium (60,483) In a Week 15 match-up of 4-9 teams desperate for a win, the Cardinals capitalized on 4 Detroit turnovers converting each into TDs, including 2 pick sixes. The 38-point output was Arizona s largest of the year and the victory snapped a 9-game losing streak. Detroit entered the game with the NFL s #2 overall offense and #1 passing attack but the Cards defense limited the explosive Lions to just 10 points and sent them 3-n-out on 7 drives. QB Matthew Stafford threw 3 INTs and 0 TDs while enduring constant pressure. The game was scoreless until early in the 2 nd quarter when Lions RB Mikel Leshoure capped an 11- play, 73-yard drive with his 1-yard TD run that gave the visitors a 7-0 lead. The Lions forced a punt on the next AZ drive but the ensuing punt was muffed by Stefan Logan and Michael Adams eventually recovered at the DET5. On the very next snap, Beanie Wells tied the game with his 5-yard TD run. Later in the 2 nd CB Patrick Peterson INT d a Stafford pass intended for Calvin Johnson and returned it 31 yards to the DET3. It was Peterson s 4 th straight game with a pick and 7 th INT of the year; it quickly led to another Wells TD run that made it 14-7 with 3:20 left in the half. The Lions were moving just before halftime and had approached midfield before S Rashad Johnson stepped in front of a 3 rd -n-15 Stafford pass and returned it 53 yards for a TD that made it Arizona s opening drive of the 2 nd half resulted in a 51-yard Jay Feely FG that made it The Lions answered with Jason Hanson s 41-yarder that made it After the team s traded punts on the next 4 drives, Detroit marched deep into AZ territory and appeared to cut the deficit to 7 with a Stafford TD pass with 6:11 to play but it was negated by a delay of game penalty. Two plays later on 4 th -n-2 at the 4, CB Greg Toler picked off Stafford in the end zone and returned it a franchise record 102 yards for a score. Instead of shrinking to 7, the Arizona lead grew to 21. The next Detroit series ended when Adrian Wilson sacked Stafford on 4 th -n-10; with it Wilson became the 6 th player in NFL history to amass 25+ sacks and INTs in a career. One play after the Lions turned it over on downs, Wells scored his 3 rd TD of the day when he ran 31 yards down the right sideline for the game s final points. DE Calais Campbell had his best game of the year with 8 tackles, a sack and 3 QB hits. Punter Dave Zastudil set a team record with 6 punts inside the 20 and an offensive line shuffled due to injuries allowed just 1 sack. LIONS CARDINALS Team Qtr. His three sacks in 2012 rank as his highest season total since posting five sacks in His 25.5 sacks are third-most in league history among safeties behind only Brian Dawkins (26.0) and Rodney Harrison (30.5). Adrian has worked very hard for this organization for a long time and been a very good player, as evidenced by his Pro Bowls and all the recognition that he s got, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said when discussing Wilson s accomplishment. To think that he s only the sixth player in the history of the league to do that, that s pretty staggering. I couldn t see it happening to a better guy. I was excited for him to do that. That s a significant achievement in a career that Adrian s had, and the recognition that comes with that as far as how he s viewed in the eyes of history going forward, I think it s outstanding. NOTES OF THE WEEK After posting three INTs last week against the Lions, Arizona s defense leads the NFL with 22 INTs this season. This week s opponent, Chicago, ranks second in the NFL with 21 INTs. Despite starting two rookies tackles Nate Potter and Bobby Massie having G Adam Snyder make his first career start at center, and having Pat McQuistan make his first start since the 2010 season, the Cardinals offensive line allowed just one sack against the Lions on Sunday. NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE FOUNDATION At last week s NFL meetings in Dallas, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced the formation of the National Football League Foundation, which will focus on youth football, health and safety, and the community. Selected to serve on the board was Cardinals President Michael Bidwill. The announcement followed the restructuring of the NFL s previous charitable arms -- NFL Charities and the NFL Youth Football Fund. As a result of this change, the NFL will be able to devote more resources to its goal of making a difference in the lives of those touched by football from players at all levels of the game to the broader community. The foundation will award more than $23 million in grants in 2013 to support youth and high school football programs, health and safety efforts, as well as community health initiatives, including NFL PLAY 60. In addition to serving on the National Football League Foundation board, Bidwill chairs the League s Security & Fan Conduct Committee and is also a member of the NFL s Business Ventures Committee. Joining Bidwill on the National Football League Foundation board are: Charlotte Jones Anderson, Executive VP/VP of Brand Management/ President of the Charity Foundation, Dallas Cowboys Shahid Khan, Owner, Jacksonville Jaguars Mary Owen, Executive VP of Strategic Planning, Buffalo Bills Mike Reinfeldt, Senior Executive VP/COO, Tennessee Titans Arthur J. Bill, whose association with the Cardinals began as a ball boy on Chicago s South Side, became the sole owner and chief executive officer in 1972 and his involvement with the team - now in its eighth decade - continues today. Mr. B remains a constant fixture at team functions as well as the Cardinals Tempe training facility where the responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the team today resides with his son and team president, Michael. Michael Bidwill joined the Cardinals in 1996 as Vice President/General Counsel after practicing law for six years as a federal prosecutor. He has established his own legacy with the franchise that has included spearheading the effort that led to the creation of University of Phoenix Stadium and the team s greatest period of success, both on the field and off. Founded in 1898, the Cardinals are the oldest continuously run franchise in professional football. They were a charter member of the National Football League when it began in 1920; the Cardinals and Bears are the only charter members of the NFL still in existence today. Although injuries have plagued the unit, Arizona s offensive line has allowed just 17 sacks over the last seven games. That comes after allowing 35 sacks over the season s first seven games. Due to an injury situation that began in the preseason with the loss of stalwart tackle Levi Brown, the Cardinals have featured a variety of different looks along the offensive line, which is especially true as of late. After serving as a backup for the first nine games, Lindley saw his first NFL action in Week 11 against Atlanta. After entering the game in the second quarter, the former San Diego State star finished the game having completed 9 of 20 pass attempts. Lindley earned his first career start in Week 12 when the Cardinals hosted the St. Louis Rams. He completed 31 of 52 pass attempts for 312 yards, with four INTs. Lindley s 52 pass attempts, 31 completions and 312 passing yards were all franchise records for a rookie making their first start.
