1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #16 THIS WEEK S GAME The Cardinals are looking to finish the 2010 season strong and a win this week in San Francisco would give Arizona back-toback victories and three wins over the final four games to close out the season. Arizona will also look to end a threegame losing streak to their division rival from the Bay Area. Last week the Cardinals earned their second consecutive thrilling victory over the Dallas Cowboys when Jay Feely connected on a 48-yard FG with just five seconds remaining to give Arizona the win. A host of Cardinals rookies played big roles in the team s win over the Cowboys but none bigger than third round pick WR Andre Roberts. Roberts hauled in a career-high 110 yards receiving, a big chunk of which come on a 74-yard TD pass from fellow rookie John Skelton. It was the longest rookie-to-rookie TD pass for the Cardinals since 1958 (M.C. Reynolds 91-yard pass to John David Crow). With the win, Skelton joined Neil Lomax (1981) as the only Cardinals rookie QBs in the Super Bowl era to win their first two home starts. WR Larry Fitzgerald went without a catch until the game s final drive but it was a big one a 26-yard reception from Skelton on 4 th -and-15 from the Cards 19-yard line that kept the eventual game-winning drive. San Francisco was eliminated from playoff contention last week after falling to the Rams in St. Louis. Following the game, Mike Singletary was removed as head coach and defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was named interim head coach. Arizona will now have faced three of the NFL s four current interim head coaches over the final four weeks of the season (Denver s Eric Studesville, Week 14; Dallas Jason Garrett, Week 16). It marked Arizona s 6 th straight defeat. Despite losing RB Frank Gore in the 1 st quarter with a hip injury, San Fran was able to gain 261 yards on the ground. The majority of those yards came from veteran Brian Westbrook, who finished with 136 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. The 49ers began the game by taking the opening kickoff and marching to the AZ20 but Shane Andrus FG try missed wide right. However, on Arizona s first offensive play QB Derek Anderson and RB Beanie Wells mishandled an exchange and the 49ers recovered at the AZ38. On the very next snap, 49ers QB Troy Smith tossed a deep pass down the middle that WR Michael Crabtree hauled in for a 38-yard TD. Arizona responded by moving to the SF13, thanks mostly to a 43-yard Anderson pass to Wells down the right sideline. The Cards did not find the end zone but came away with a 31- yard Jay Feely TD that made it 7-3. San Fran s Ted Ginn then returned the ensuing kickoff 41 yards to the Niners 45 to start a possession that ended on Anthony Dixon s 1-yard scoring run. The score capped a 10-play drive that put SF up 14-3 late in the first. After a 3-n-out from the Cardinals, Ginn s 42-yard punt return set the Niners up at the AZ42. Six plays later, Westbrook scored from 8 yards out to make it 21-3 midway thru the second. It looked like the Cards had cut into the lead on the next drive when they marched to the SF18 and Larry Fitzgerald came down in the end zone with an Anderson pass but the receiver lost control as he hit the ground. Instead the Cardinals came away with a 39-yard Feely FG that made it 21-6 late in the first half. With just over a minute remaining in the half, CB Michael Adams picked off a Smith pass that had deflected off Crabtree s hands and the Cards took over at the SF42 with 1:13 left but could not capitalize. LaRod Stephens-Howling appeared to spark the Cards with an 83-yard return of the 2 nd half s opening kickoff but it was wiped out by a holding penalty. The Niners opening drive ended with a 27- yard FG try from Andrus but Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie blocked it. He could not block a 38- yarder on the next drive and the 49ers led 24-6 after three quarters. The only points of the fourth came on a 26-yard Andrus FG that was set-up by Takeo Spikes INT of Anderson. 49ERS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 4 THE LAST GAME CARDINALS 27, Cowboys 26 December 25, 2010 University of Phoenix Stadium (63,971) The Cards closed their 2010 home slate with a thrilling Christmas night game against the Cowboys. Arizona jumped out to an early lead thanks to INT touchdowns on its first two defensive series and led 21-3 early in the 2 nd. The Cowboys then stormed back from 18 down and took their first lead with 1:41 to play. However AZ rookie QB John Skelton, making his 3 rd career start, led the offense into position for Jay Feely s game-winning FG with 5 ticks on the clock. Rookie WR Andre Roberts had 5 catches for 110 yards and a 74-yard TD as both teams moved to 5-10 on the year. On Dallas 2 nd offensive snap, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie picked off a Jon Kitna pass intended for Miles Austin and returned it 32 yards for a TD. The next Cowboys series reached the AZ39 but Kitna s 1st down pass bounced off Roy Williams and right to CB Greg Toler who raced 66 yards down the left sideline to make it It was Arizona s 12 th return TD of the season, one shy of the NFL record. After a 3-n-out from Dallas, Feely had a chance to up the lead but his 49-yard FG try was wide right. Cowboys K David Buehler then put Dallas on the board with a 42-yarder. On the 2 nd play of the next Arizona series, Skelton found a wide-open Roberts down the left sideline for a 74- yard TD that made it Dallas then moved 81 yards in 13 plays and found the end zone on 4 th - goal at the 2 on a Kitna TD pass to TE Jason Witten. Just before the score, Kitna injured his hip and was replaced for a snap by 2 nd year man Stephen McGee in his first NFL action. When the injury kept Kitna from returning after intermission, McGee was at the helm the rest of the game. The 2 nd half was largely a struggle for the Cardinals offense, which failed to pick up a first down until midway thru the 4 th. In the meantime, Buehler made a 53-yard FG and Marion Barber scored on a 24-yard run that cut the AZ lead to after 3 quarters. Arizona dodged a bullet late in the quarter when LB Bradie James nearly had an INT but it was ruled incomplete both on the field and after a Dallas challenge. With 8:50 to go, the Cards took over at their own 20 clinging to a 1-point lead. A 21-yard catch by Roberts on 3 rd -n-7 gave AZ its initial first down of the 2 nd half and was followed by 2 strong Beanie Wells runs. The efforts led to a 49-yard FG from Feely that made it with 3:45 to go. On the ensuing drive Dallas reached the AZ 45 with 1:51 left and the game appeared to be sealed when McGee s 4 th -n-5 pass fell incomplete but a late interference flag kept the drive alive. On the next play, Austin somehow snared a McGee pass over a pair of AZ defenders that was good for a 37-yard go-ahead TD. However, the Dallas lead was just 2 after Buehler s PAT hit the left upright. With one timeout and 1:36 remaining, AZ took over at its own 24 but after a pair of incompletions and a sack, faced a 4 th -n-15 at the 19. With the game on the line, Larry Fitzgerald s first catch of the day was a critical 26-yarder to the AZ45. Skelton ran for 5 yards before completions to Tim Hightower (6) and Max Komar (19) moved it to the 25. An illegal formation penalty backed it up 5 yards making Feely s game-winner a 48-yarder. TWO GAMES TWO INCREDIBLE ENDINGS The Cardinals earned their second-consecutive heart-stopping win over the Cowboys last week, winning in their first ever victory on Christmas day. In each of the last two games against the Cowboys, both wins came down to key special teams performances for the Cardinals. 12/25/10 vs. Dallas (27-26 win) After the Cards took a 21-3 lead early in the second quarter last week, Dallas scored 23 of the game s next 26 points and took a lead after Miles Austin s 37-yard TD reception with 1:41 remaining in the fourth quarter. Dallas missed a chance to go up by three (27-24) when K David Buehler hit the left upright on the PAT attempt following the Austin TD reception. The Cardinals got the ball back with 1:36 remaining in the fourth quarter and faced a 4 th -and 15 from their own 19-yard line following two incompletions and a sack. On the fourth down attempt, QB John Skelton hit Larry Fitzgerald for 26 yards, Fitzgerald s first reception of the game. Following a 5-yard scramble by Skelton and two completions (6 yards to RB Tim Hightower and 19 yards WR Max Komar), the Cardinals got the ball down to the Cowboys 25-yard line with 11 seconds remaining. Attempting to spike the ball and stop the clock, the Cards were called for an Illegal formation penalty which moved the ball back to the Dallas 30-yard line. That set up Jay Feely s 48-yard game-winning FG with just five seconds left on the clock. 10/12/08 vs. Dallas (30-24 OT victory) The last meeting between the Cardinals and Cowboys resulted in one of the most memorable regular season wins in recent franchise history in a game that began and ended on spectacular special teams plays. In the 08 meeting against Dallas, Arizona special teams ace Sean Morey broke through the Dallas line and blocked Mat McBriar s punt following Dallas first possession in the overtime period. Backup linebacker Monty Beisel, who was right behind Morey on the blocked kick, scooped up the loose ball and returned it three yards for the game winning touchdown and a victory over the Cowboys. Morey s blocked punt marked the first time in NFL regular season history that a game ended on a touchdown off of a blocked punt. Combined with J.J. Arrington s 93-yard return on the game s opening kickoff, the win marked the first time since at least the 1970 NFL-AFL merger that a team has scored a touchdown on the first and last plays of the game. It came one series after Rodgers-Cromartie s 32-yard INT return for a TD. Toler s 66-yard TD was the team s longest INT return for a TD since Rodgers-Cromartie s 99-yarder 12/7/08 vs. St. Louis. 6 FEELY HITS GAME WINNER Jay Feely s 48-yard FG with just five seconds remaining capped the Cards come-from-behind win against the Cowboys last week. Feely s kick was the sixth game-winning FG of his career and third in regulation. It marked the first game-winning kick for Feely since 11/13/08 at New England as a member of the Jets, when he hit a 34-yard FG with 7:15 remaining in OT for a Jets victory. The 48-yarder was the second-longest game winning FG of Feely s career and longest since 12/23/01 vs. Buffalo as a member of the Falcons, when he hit a 52-yard FG as time expired to give Atlanta a victory over the Bills. ONE OF SEVEN OVER 1,000 Jay Feely is one of the seven NFL players who have eclipsed 1,000 points since 2001, the year he entered the league. In that time, Feely has tallied 1,119 points, the second-highest total in the league dating back to 01 behind only Eagles kicker David Akers (1,182). Feely joins Akers, former Broncos and Falcons kicker Jason Elam, Minnesota s Ryan Longwell, Indy s Adam Vinatieri, Buffalo s Rian Lindell and Oakland s Sebastian Janikowski as the only NFL players with 1,000+ points in that span. FEELY REACHES 100 After posting 40 points over the last three games, including his 25-point performance in week 14 vs. Denver, Jay Feely now has 106 points in 2010, his seventh career 100-point season and third in a row. Feely needs nine more points to tie Jim Bakken (115, 1964) for the fifth-highest point total in team history. Feely led all NFL kickers in points in 2002 (138) and 2005 (148). FEELY S HISTORIC DAY VS. DENVER K Jay Feely scored his first career TD on his 5-yard run off a fake FG attempt in week 14 s win vs. Denver. It was the first-ever TD by a Cardinals kicker. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, prior to Feely s 5-yard TD run, the last NFL placekicker to score a TD of any kind was Tim Seder of Dallas with an 8-yard run on 10/7/01 at the Raiders. Feely became just the 4 th kicker since the 1970 merger to score a rushing TD: Dallas Seder (10/7/01 & 11/12/00); Cleveland s Phil Dawson (10/10/99); NY Giant s Jess Atkinson (10/13/85). In addition to his TD, Feely tied a career-high with five FGs and four PATs, giving him 25 points for the game. That total represents the second-highest point total by a kicker in NFL history, trailing only the 26 points posted by Tennessee s Rob Bironas on 10/21/07 vs. Houston (8 FGs, 2 PATs). Feely became the first player in NFL history to score a TD and kick five FGs in a game. It wasn t until Hauschka s 30-yard FG with 11:20 remaining in the fourth quarter that Denver got back on the scoreboard, with Arizona leading Feely s run of 22 points looked like this: 36-yard FG (3-3 Tie) 48-yard FG (6-3 Arizona) 5-yard run on fake FG, followed by PAT (13-3 Arizona) 55-yard FG (16-3 Arizona) 23-yard FG (19-3 Arizona) 49-yard FG (22-3 Arizona) Feely s 22 consecutive points marked the most consecutive points scored in a game by an individual player in the Super Bowl era (post 1967). Prior to that the last player to score more than 22 uninterrupted points was Green Bay s Paul Hornung, who totaled 24 consecutive points in a 45-7 win vs. Baltimore on 10/8/61. In that game, Hornung kicked a 38-yard FG, then scored three consecutive TDs (and PATs) on a 1-yard run, an 8-yard reception and another 1-yard run. FEELY FOR 50 and 7 Feely s third FG of the day was a 55-yarder that tied for the longest FG of his career. It was the fourth 55-yard FG he has made and the first since 11/1/09 vs. Miami as a member of the Jets. With the 55-yard FG, Feely became the first player in 46 years to kick a 50+ yard FG and score a TD in the same game. The last player to do so was the Boston Patriots Gino Cappelletti on 11/20/64 vs. Denver. In that game, Cappelletti caught a 25-yard TD pass and kicked a 51-yard FG. Cardinals vs. 49ers 6 of 44

If Fitzgerald hits 80 receptions, he will have reached the mark for the fourth consecutive season, a franchise record. Fitzgerald is six receptions away from 85 for the season. If he reaches 85+ receptions this year, he will have 85+ receptions in four consecutive seasons, and join Chad Ochocinco as the only active players to record 85+ receptions in four consecutive seasons. In addition to Fitzgerald, New England s Wes Welker is two receptions away from accomplishing the feat and Miami s Brandon Marshall is 14 receptions away. With 85 receptions, Fitzgerald will join Chad Ochocinco as the only active players to record 85+ receptions in five of their first seven NFL seasons. TD Receptions Fitzgerald enters this week s game with 64 career TD receptions. He needs just two TD receptions to tie Roy Green (66) for the most receiving TDs in franchise history. Green holds the franchise record for career TDs as well with 69. He had 66 receiving TDs, a kickoff return TD, a punt return TD and a rushing TD. ANDRE THE GIANT Rookie WR Andre Roberts, the Cardinals third round pick (88 th overall) in the 2010 draft, caught five passes for a career-high 110 yards and a TD in the win over Dallas. It was Roberts first career 100-yard game. Roberts TD came on a 74-yard pass from rookie QB John Skelton in the second quarter and it was the longest pass play of the season for the Cardinals. The 74-yard TD catch was the longest scoring pass play by the Cardinals since 12/21/08 at New England (Larry Fitzgerald 78 yards from Matt Leinart). After the Cowboys got within 21-20, the Cardinal faced a 3 rd and 7 in the fourth quarter at their own 23-yard line. On the third down play, Skelton hit Roberts over the middle as Roberts hauled in the pass in traffic for a 21-yard gain. Arizona went on to score a FG on the drive and push its lead to With LaRod Stephens-Howling out with a hamstring injury, Roberts also served as the kickoff return man against Dallas, totaling 109 yards on five returns. Combined with his 110 receiving yards and his 25 yards on punt returns, Roberts totaled 244 all-purpose yards against the Cowboys. With 110 yards receiving against Dallas, Roberts became the first Cardinals rookie to post a 100-yard receiving game since Anquan Boldin totaled 122 yards on 12/21/03 at Seattle. 9 FOND MEMORIES FROM CHRISTMAS In their second Christmas day appearance, the Cardinals earned their first win on Christmas, having also faced Dallas in the team s only other Christmas day game in Last week, the Cardinals and Cowboys became the first two NFL franchises to face off multiple times in Christmas day contests. The Cardinals recorded five sacks of Dallas QBs in last week s win, matching their highest total of the season and most since week seven in Seattle. Arizona had four players record a sack in last week s game, with DT Darnell Dockett recording two and LB Clark Haggans, LB O Brien Schofield and DE Calais Campbell each recording a takedown. DT Darnell Dockett recorded 2.0 sacks against the Cowboys last week, with both sacks coming in a three-play span in the second quarter. It marked the fifth time in his career (including postseason) that Dockett has recorded at least two sacks in a game. In addition to his sack total, Dockett added five tackles, a tackle for loss and two QB hits. DE Calais Campbell totaled two tackles, a sack and a tackle for loss, giving him a sack in three of the last four games. In his last four games, Campbell has collected 17 tackles, three sacks, a pass defensed and his first career fumble recovery. He now has a team-high six sacks on the season. FS Kerry Rhodes finished with seven tackles, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery, his fourth fumble recovery of the season. His four fumble recoveries in 2010 tie for the second-highest single-season total in franchise history and highest total since Michael Bankston (5) in In franchise history, only Bankston, Chuck Walker (5, 1969) and Tom Wham (5, 1950) had more than four fumble recoveries in a single season. With win last week, the Cardinals improved to 8-2 under Ken Whisenhunt when sporting their red-on-red uniforms. Arizona led entering the fourth quarter against the Cowboys and after their victory, improved to 23-2 when leading after three quarters under Ken Whisenhunt.
