2 SUPER BOWL RETURNS TO ARIZONA UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX STADIUM IN YEAR ONE In 2006, the Cardinals played their inaugural season at University of Phoenix Stadium and the venue lived up to all the hype. It was recognized as one of the top 10 sports facilities in the world by BusinessWeek and was the only facility in North America to be placed on the list. On February 3, 2008, Super Bowl XLII comes to Glendale as the country s most popular sporting event arrives at University of Phoenix Stadium. Along with the 73,000 that will be on hand for the game, over 100 million viewers are expected to tune in to the game being played on the Cardinals home field. With an estimated economic impact of $ million and worldwide viewership, the City of Glendale and the State of Arizona stand to reap the benefits of having built the country s most state-of-the-art and technologically advanced sporting facility. Having last hosted the Super Bowl on January 28, 1996 when the Dallas Cowboys overcame the Pittsburgh Steelers at Sun Devil Stadium, Arizona will again have a chance to shine as it plays host to the 100,000-plus out-of-state fans who will be on hand to participate in the week-long activities preceding the game. In addition to the fans, more than 3,000 media members are expected to attend the event. Thousands of Valley residents will have an opportunity to be part of the action as the Super Bowl Host Committee looks to train up to 10,000 volunteers to work in fields such as hospitality, transportation and special events. Information and application forms for volunteers are available at the official website of the 2008 Super Bowl in Arizona. RECORD ATTENDANCE IN 2006 The Cardinals sold out every game in 2006 which led to a new franchise record for attendance in a season. In 2006, the Cardinals had 508,829 fans visit University of Phoenix Stadium during the regular season. That number eclipsed the previous record of 497,330 set in 1994 by more than 11,000 fans. For the first time in NFL history, paid attendance for all NFL games surpassed the 22 million mark and, for the fifth consecutive year, the paid attendance established a new record. NFL paid attendance for all 2006 games was 22,199,712, an increase of more than 400,000 (407,616) over the previous record total of 21,792,096 in The 2006 NFL regular-season total paid attendance of 17,340,879 and the average of 67,738 per game were both alltime records as well. With season tickets at University of Phoenix Stadium sold out for the 2007 season, the Cardinals and the NFL look to continue their unprecedented success. University of Phoenix Stadium was also named the best in the NFL by Street & Smith s Sports Business Journal and the field was named the best playing surface in the NFL in a Sporting News survey of NFL players. In its first year of operation the stadium proved to be a truly multipurpose facility, hosting everything from high school proms to the BCS National Championship Game. In February of 2008, it will host Super Bowl XLII and in 2009 it will host the Regionals of the NCAA men s basketball tournament. The facility is equipped to host football, basketball, soccer concerts, consumer shows, motor sports, rodeos and corporate events and it indeed held almost all of those events in its first year of operation. In the first 10 months of operation alone, the stadium welcomed 1,236,327 visitors and booked 216 event days. STADIUM CONTINUES TO WIN PRAISE Before it even opened, University of Phoenix Stadium was winning praise from all over the world. Nothing about that changed as the field completed its first year of operation. Street & Smith s Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily conducted its second annual SBJ/SBD Readers Survey on the state of the sports industry and University of Phoenix Stadium was named the top stadium in the NFL. University of Phoenix Stadium took the title from historic Lambeau Field, the winner in Best NFL Stadium 16.4% University of Phoenix Stadium (AZ Cardinals) 12.6% Lambeau Field (Green Bay Packers) 7.1% Qwest Field (Seattle Seahawks) 6.8% Gillette Stadium (New England Patriots) 6.7% Lincoln Financial Field (Philadelphia Eagles) 6.6% Soldier Field (Chicago Bears) In addition to being recognized as the NFL s best stadium, University of Phoenix Stadium has also been lauded for its playing surface. In a Sporting News survey conducted in 2006, players across the NFL voted the surface that lays inside the stadium s unique retractable tray as the best playing surface in the NFL. The domed stadium has a retractable playing field, the only of its kind in America, allowing games to be played on natural grass as it is tended during the week outside of the stadium and moved indoors on gameday. LAST WEEK S GAME 49ers 20, CARDINALS 17 September 10, 2007 Monster Park (68,111) The Cardinals opened the 2007 with a Monday night match at San Francisco and were seconds away from victory before a late Niners rally sent them home 0-1. In the first half, each team had a FG and converted a turnover into a TD to make it at intermission. On Arizona s first offensive play of the game, QB Matt Leinart was INT d by Walt Harris, who returned it to the AZ 6. Two snaps later, Frank Gore ran up the middle and scored on a 6-yard run. Early in the second, the Cardinals got on the board when Neil Rackers 35-yard FG ended a 13-play, 53- yard drive. On the next drive, LB Karlos Dansby blitzed up the middle and sacked Alex Smith, forcing a fumble that DE Antonio Smith recovered at the SF 36. That set-up a 7-yard Edgerrin James TD run that made it James led a Cardinals ground attack that was very productive and he opened his second Cards season by rushing 26 times for 92 yards. Meanwhile the AZ defense again did an outstanding job containing SF back Frank Gore, limiting the Pro Bowl RB to 55 yards on 18 carries. They also held talented TE Vernon Davis to 2 catches for 4 yards. After the James TD, the Niners responded with a long drive that reached the AZ 16 before settling for a 33-yard Joe Nedney FG that tied it at the half. A 30-yard Nedney FG on SF s opening drive of the second half gave the Niners a lead they took midway through the fourth. Arizona then went ahead when Leinart connected with WR Anquan Boldin on a 5-yard TD pass to cap a 58-yard drive. One of the key plays came on 3 rd -n-3 from the SF30 when Leinart scrambled 20 yards for the first down. Nursing the lead, the Cards were forced to punt it back to SF, who took over at its own 14 with 2:58 left and needing a TD to win. Smith quickly completed passes to get SF near midfield. Facing a 4 th -n-1 at the AZ45 with 1:43 left, Smith eluded the Cards rush and ran 25 yards for a 1 st down. Three plays later on 3 rd -n-13 at the 23, Smith lofted it down the middle to Arnaz Battle who caught it at the 1 before fumbling into the end zone. CB Eric Green had a chance to recover but could not and the ball returned to the spot of the fumble when SF recovered. On the next play Battle took a handoff on a reverse and scored from a yard out. Arizona s comeback hopes were officially dashed when Leinart s deep pass on the next snap was intercepted. CARDINALS ers Team Qtr. 4 CARDINALS & SEAHAWKS LAST SEASON Game 2 Seahawks 21, CARDINALS 10 September 17, 2006 Qwest Field (67,470) Arizona faced a formidable challenge in its opening road game of the year, taking on the defending NFC champions in Seattle. The hosts kept the Cardinals off balance with constant pressure and kept the Arizona offense from ever getting on track. The Seahawks capitalized on big plays early and scored TDs on their first two drives. Meanwhile, Arizona hurt itself with penalties and missed opportunities, falling to 1-1 after the defeat. On the game-opening drive, Arizona forced the Seahawks into third-n-long on two occasions but they converted each, first with a 47-yard pass from Matt Hasselbeck to WR Darrell Jackson on 3 rd -n-12 and then on 3 rd -n-10 thanks to a defensive holding penalty. They eventually capped the 10-play, 80- yard drive with a 2-yard Shaun Alexander run. On their next drive, the Seahawks moved 74 yards in 7 plays and again came up with a pair of big gains. The first was a 17-yard completion to Jackson on 3 rd - n-12 and 4 plays later the two connected on a 49-yard TD strike that made it Arizona s next drive reached the Seattle 33 but failed to produce points when Neil Rackers 51-yard FG try bounced off the crossbar. After the first two TD drives, the Arizona defense gave up very little, holding Alexander under 100 yards and Hasselbeck under 50%. Following an INT by S Michael Boulware on the final play of the first quarter, Seattle moved to the AZ 11 but Calvin Pace blocked Josh Brown s 30-yard FG try. Later in the second, the Seahawks advanced to the AZ 30 before LB Gerald Hayes diving INT killed the threat. Following the Hayes pick, AZ took over at its own 21 with 2:28 to play. The Cards moved downfield but a sack late in the half led to a hurry-up FG try of 53 yards that Rackers pushed left and the score remained 14-0 at the half. In the second half, the Cardinal defense continued to hold Seattle in check and midway through the third, a 43-yard Rackers FG put Arizona on the board and made it That changed early in the fourth when FB Mack Strong ended an 80-yard drive with his 3-yard TD run. Arizona answered on the next series when Kurt Warner hit WR Bryant Johnson on a 40-yard TD pass on 3 rd -n-9, trimming the deficit to with 11:20 remaining. On the next play from scrimmage, momentum further shifted in Arizona s favor when SS Adrian Wilson - who had 2.0 sacks earlier in the game - INT d a Hasselbeck pass near midfield. The Cards advanced inside the 30 but TE Adam Bergen fumbled on the end of a pass play to halt what would be the team s last best scoring chance with 9:45 to play. CARDINALS SEAHAWKS Team Qtr. Game 13 CARDINALS 27, Seahawks 21 December 10, 2006 University of Phoenix Stadium (63,603) Facing an 8-4 Seahawks team that could have clinched the division crown with a win, the Cardinals took advantage of three Seattle fumbles and Edgerrin James second straight 100-yard rushing effort to earn a victory. It was Arizona s third win in its last four games and with it the team improved to 4-9. The Arizona defense held nemesis Shaun Alexander to 76 rushing yards on 22 carries with no TDs and came up with a huge stop at the end of the game. In addition to clearing the way for James 115 rushing yards, the Cardinals o-line enabled Matt Leinart to complete 61.7% of his passes for 232 yards and 2 TDs and surrendered no sacks. After Arizona forced a Seattle 3-n-out on the game-opening drive, a 37-yard Troy Walters punt return set the Cards up at their own 44. On the first play from scrimmage, Leinart went deep to WR Bryant Johnson for a 56-yard TD. The next Seattle series ended when DT Darnell Dockett sacked Matt Hasselbeck, forcing a fumble that DT Gabe Watson recovered at the SEA 46. Six plays later, Leinart went to WR Larry Fitzgerald who appeared to make the catch and was down at the SEA 11 before LB Julian Peterson ripped it out of his hands but officials instead ruled it an INT. Alexander would turn it back to the Cardinals when FS Robert Griffith forced a fumble that SS Adrian Wilson recovered at the SEA 24. That led to a seven-yard James TD run and a 14-0 lead. Seattle quickly responded as Hasselbeck completed consecutive passes to D.J. Hackett, a 47-yarder followed by a 23-yard TD pass and in 2 plays, the Seahawks halved the lead. Late in the 1st half, the Cards faced a 4 th -n-1 at the SEA 14 and opted for a 32-yard Neil Rackers FG that made it 17-7 with 4:03 to play. That proved to be enough time for Seattle to move 91 yards and Hasselbeck capped the drive with a five-yard TD pass to WR Nate Burleson that made it Arizona at intermission. After Rackers missed a 53-yard FG on the opening drive of the second half Hasselbeck put Seattle ahead with a two-yard TD toss to WR Darrell Jackson to end an 11-play drive. Momentum further shifted toward Seattle following a 3-n-out by the Cards but LB Karlos Dansby forced a Mack Strong fumble on the next Seattle play and DT Chris Cooper recovered at the SEA 36. After three James runs gained 28 yards, Leinart hit Fitzgerald with a fade pass for a 5-yard TD on the first play of the 4 th quarter that put the Cards back up Seattle s next drive stalled when the Cards stuffed Alexander for no gain on 3 rd -n-1 at the SEA 32 and while the ensuing AZ possession ended in a punt, it consumed 4:54 and left the Hawks at their own 4. A 3-n-out gave AZ the ball back at the SEA 41 with 7:03 to play. Facing a 4 th -n-1 at the SEA 23 with 3:36 to play, Arizona opted for a 40-yard Rackers FG that made it a 6-point game. After the kickoff, Seattle took over at its own 17 with 3:24 left and three timeouts. They moved downfield and had a 1 st -n-10 at the AZ 15 with 1:40 left but Alexander was stuffed for minus-two on first down and an incompletion on 2 nd led to a 3 rd -n-12 at the 17. That s when former Seahawk Chike Okeafor beat LT Walter Jones for an 8-yard sack. Arizona clinched the win when Hasselebeck s pass to Deion Branch on 4 th -n-20 came up half a yard short, thanks to a Wilson tackle. SEAHAWKS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 5 FIRST YEAR IN THE NEST For the Cardinals, 2007 doesn t just bring with it the promise of a new season, it also ushers in the Ken Whisenhunt era in the desert. On January 14, the Cardinals named Whisenhunt their new head coach. He came to Arizona after spending the previous six years with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Prior to joining the Steelers, Whisenhunt coached tight ends with the NY Jets (2000), special teams with the Cleveland Browns (1999) and tight ends with the Baltimore Ravens ( ). Having served as the Steelers tight ends coach from , Whisenhunt was then promoted to offensive coordinator where over the next three years he not only helped lead the Steelers to a victory in Super Bowl XL but also gained a reputation as one of the most innovative play-callers in the NFL. In his tenure as offensive coordinator, Whisenhunt: Improved the Steelers running game from 31 st overall to second overall in his first year as coordinator. Helped lead the team to a victory in Super Bowl XL. Averaged 2,226 yards and 18 TDs a season on the ground. Helped guide the team to a record HEAD COACHING CLASS Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt joins Atlanta s Bobby Petrino, Miami s Cam Cameron, Oakland s Lane Kiffin and Pittsburgh s Mike Tomlin as first year head coaches entering the 2007 season looking to repeat the success of last year s rookie coaches Sean Payton (Saints) and Eric Mangini (Jets). Payton and Mangini were the only two first-year head coaches that finished 2006 with a winning record and a playoff appearance. However, all but two teams (Detroit and Minnesota) managed to improve upon their record from Below is a list of the 2006 rookie head coaches and the results of their inaugural season vs. the results of their team s 2005 performance: Coach (Team) W-L 06 W-L 05 +/- Brad Childress (Minnesota) Gary Kubiak (Houston) Scott Linehan (St. Louis) Eric Mangini (NYJ) 10-6* Rod Marinelli (Detroit) Mike McCarthy (Green Bay) Sean Payton (New Orleans) 13-3** * Clinched playoff birth ** Clinched NFC South title BRINGING THE RUSH The Cardinals rushing attack finished ranked 32 nd overall in 2005 and 30 th overall in 2006, making it an area the Red Birds are striving to improve on in Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt and his Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line Russ Grimm as two of the main components behind Pittsburgh s formidable rushing attack, look to duplicate their success here in Arizona. Here is a look at the Steelers rushing numbers between 2004 and 2006, Whisenhunt s years as offensive coordinator. Year Att. Yds. Avg. TD , , , Totals 1,636 6, Between 2004 and 2006, the Steelers offense averaged 545 rushing attempts, 2,226 yards for a 4.1 yard average and almost 18 TD s. Of the 3,013 total offensive plays run by the Steelers between 2004 and 2006, 1,636 of them, or 54.3%, were rushing plays. Between that same time period, the Cardinals ran a total of 3,121 plays, with 1,254 of them, or 40.2%, as rushing plays. When you talk about running the football, for me, it s more about a mentality, Whisenhunt said. We don t want to lose sight of the fact that we want to run the football. If somebody s going to put nine guys in the box to stop the run, which teams have done to our style of offense in the past, they re going to have to deal with Larry Fitzgerald, they re going to have to deal with Anquan Boldin, and they re going to have to deal with Bryant Johnson and our quarterback. And we re very comfortable with that. PENDERGAST STILL THE MAN FOR CARDS DEFENSE Despite hiring new head coach Ken Whisenhunt and almost entirely remaking the Cardinals coaching staff, defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast still holds the reigns of the Cardinals defense. Pendergast, who was one of two assistants retained by Whisenhunt (assistant defensive backs coach Rick Courtright was the other) enters his fourth season with the Cardinals. A native of Phoenix, Pengergast improved the defense s overall ranking from 26 th to 12 th overall in his first year as coordinator. In 2005, the defense ranked 8 th overall, the first top ten ranking for a Cardinals defense since 1994 when they ranked third overall. The Cardinals 2006 defense forced 33 turnovers (17 fumble recoveries and 16 interceptions) which was good for fifth most in the NFL. In the three years under Pendergast, the defense forced 89 turnovers, which ranks 10 th in the NFL over that span. An innovative defensive mind, Pendergast has helped players such as Bertrand Berry and Adrian Wilson to Pro Bowl appearances. Wilson, used all over the field in Pendergast s schemes, has become one of the most feared defenders in the NFL. CARDINALS TAKEAWAYS Year Int. Fum. Total Cardinals vs. Seahawks Page 5 of 30

A LOTT OF IMPROVEMENT One of Ken Whisenhunt s most talked about hires has been strength and conditioning coach John Lott. It didn t take long for the Texas native and 10-year NFL veteran to make an impact on the organization. Over a six week period this offseason, Lott oversaw the complete renovation of the Cardinals weight room at the Tempe training facility. Under Lott, the team s training philosophy gears more towards free weights (bench press, squats, medicine ball and power cleans) as well as dynamic movements on the field. The new workout is focused not only on improving the player s strength but their flexibility and overall athleticism as well. A quick look around the locker room will answer any questions as to whether the offseason program has been a success. The amount of weight that players on both sides of the ball have lost is staggering. Below are just a few of the players who have lost the most weight over the past few months: Player New Weight Lost (Lbs) G Elton Brown DT Gabe Watson RG Deuce Lutui LG Reggie Wells GRIMM TAKES OVER THE LINE One of the first areas new head coach Ken Whisenhunt wanted to address when he took over in Arizona was the offensive line. The first thing he had to do was find a new offensive line coach and when your top candidate has a resume that reads: Three time Super Bowl Champion as an offensive lineman One Super Bowl Championship as an offensive line coach Four -time Pro Bowl selection as an offensive lineman First-team selection to the 1980 s all-decade team as an offensive lineman Hall of Fame nominee as an offensive lineman It would be safe to say that you need to look no further. Russ Grimm took over the assistant head coach/offensive line position on Januray 23 and has wasted no time pushing his philosophies of toughness and discipline and finding the personnel to fit that philosophy. With Grimm s input, the Cardinals went out and signed free agent linemen Al Johnson and Mike Gandy and drafted tackle Levi Brown with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft, which makes for a good start to the Grimm tenure. HALEY FOLLOWING LINEAGE Todd Haley may be in his first year as offensive coordinator for the Cardinals but he is not new to the NFL. In his 11 th NFL season, he comes from the Dallas where he was the Cowboys passing game coordinator in However, Haley s introduction to the NFL came a lot earlier than 11 years ago. The son of Dick Haley, the former Director of Player Personnel for the Pittsburgh Steelers ( ) and New York Jets ( ), Todd has been around the NFL his entire life. Long before he became a coach, Haley was a ballboy for the Super Bowl Championship Steelers teams of the 1970s. He got his first NFL coaching job in 1997 with the New York Jets under head coach Bill Parcells. He then went on to coach receivers in Chicago ( ) and Dallas ( ) before coming to Arizona. Over Haley s first 10 seasons as an assistant coach in the NFL, he has helped tutor players to Pro Bowls during six of those campaigns: WR Keyshawn Johnson (Jets 1998, 99, 00), WR Marty Booker (Bears 2003), TE Jason Witten (Cowboys 2005, 2006) and QB Tony Romo (Cowboys 2006). 7 NOT JUST THE HEAD COACH NFL head coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are defensive specialists while some have experience rooted in the offensive side of the ball. Cardinals first-year head coach Ken Whisenhunt has been known around the league as one of the NFL s most innovative play callers dating back to his days as offensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Whisenhunt will utilize those skills as an offensive specialist with the Cardinals, continuing to call the plays from the sidelines, opting to continue doing what only a handful of NFL head coaches do when taking over the leadership role. There are only 12 coaches in the NFL that call the offensive plays from the sidelines during games. For many teams, that duty falls to the offensive coordinator. Below is a list of NFL head coaches who call their own plays: Lane Kiffin (Raiders) Brian Billick (Ravens) Mike Shanahan (Broncos) Mike McCarthy (Packers) Gary Kubiak (Texans) Andy Reid (Eagles) Cam Cameron (Dolphins) Sean Payton (Saints) Norv Turner (Chargers) Mike Holmgren (Seahawks) Jon Gruden (Buccaneers) Bobby Petrino (Falcons) STRENGTHENING THE CORE One of the things Cardinals General Manager Rod Graves has placed an emphasis on in recent years has been identifying the talented young players that comprise the team s core contributors and then locking them up contractually. Below is a listing of some of the core players that the Cardinals have been able to re-sign and in most cases extend with time remaining on their existing contract. Anquan Boldin-A two-time Pro Bowler who reached 300 receptions faster than any receiver in NFL history. He signed a four-year contract extension in July of Darnell Dockett-Has started 47 or 48 games in his first three seasons while displaying impressive big-play ability. He signed a five-year contract extension in October of Aaron Francisco-Has played in 27 games his first two years and was named a Pro Bowl alternate for his special teams prowess in Signed a four-year contract extension in December of Gerald Hayes-Coming off his first season as a full-time starter at linebacker and led the team with 111 tackles despite missing two games. Signed a five-year contract extension in November of Neil Rackers-Set the NFL record for field goals in a season in 2005 when he connected on 40. Signed a four-year extension in November of Reggie Wells-Has started the last 42 games in which he appeared in with the Cardinals. Cardinals matched an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills which resulted in a five-year deal that he signed in March of Adrian Wilson-Has become the unquestioned leader of the Cardinals defense while earning his first Pro Bowl nod in Signed a five-year extension in December of CARDS NAME CAPTAINS On Wednesday, September 5, the Cardinals announced the five captains for the 2007 season as selected in a team vote. Wide receiver Anquan Boldin was named the offensive captain, strong safety Adrian Wilson and middle linebacker Gerald Hayes were named defensive captains, and kicker Neil Rackers and safety Aaron Francisco were named special teams captains. Captains on each team will wear a captain s patch on their games jerseys for both home and road contests. The NFL announced at its league meetings in May that a greater emphasis would be placed on team captains, an idea suggested by players during a meeting of Commissioner Roger Goodell s new six-member Player Advisory Council and strongly endorsed by the league s coaches. The purpose of the program is to support and recognize the importance of team leadership through the role of the captains. Captains traditionally serve as a link between players, coaches and management to help foster cohesion within the teams. Notable past NFL team captains include Pro Football Hall of Famers such as Gene Upshaw, Willie Brown, Dan Dierdorf, Joe Greene, Bob Griese, Ken Houston, Jack Lambert, Steve Largent, Larry Little, Roger Staubach, Charley Taylor and Jack Youngblood. A WHOLE NEW LOOK The Cardinals 2007 roster has undergone significant change since last season. Under the guidance of head coach Ken Whisenhunt, there are now 14 new coaches (including Whisenhunt) and 22 players on the roster that were not with the organization in SELLOUTS CONTINUE The Cardinals 2007 home opener vs. the Seahawks marks the team s 13 th consecutive sellout (including preseason) at University of Phoenix Stadium. In 18 years at Sun Devil Stadium, the Cardinals sold out a total of 12 games in time to lift the television blackout. In 2006, the inaugural season at University of Phoenix Stadium, the Cardinals established a new franchise record when the welcomed 508,829 fans to the stadium during the regular season. For the third consecutive year, all 16 games of the NFL s Kickoff Weekend sold out in advance of the local TV blackout deadline, enabling every game to be televised in the hometeam market. It marked the fourth Kickoff Weekend in NFL history to have blackouts lifted for all games. They were lifted on the weekends of September 6-7 in 1998; September 8, in 2005; and on September 7, last year. The NFL blackout policy states that games sold out 72 hours prior to ki k ff b t l i d i th h it Cardinals vs. Seahawks Page 7 of 30

8 MORE MOVEMENT ALONG THE LINE The Cardinals entered the 2007 season with an entirely revamped line compared to the one that took the field for the final seven games of Although the Cardinals started six different units during the 2006 season, the combination of Deuce Lutui (RG), Reggie Wells (RT), Nick Leckey (C), Leonard Davis (LT) and Milford Brown (LG) started the last seven games of the season and the Cardinals allowed only 10 sacks in the final eight games. With new head coach Ken Whisenhunt and assistant head coach/offensive line Russ Grimm, the offensive line underwent significant change during the offseason. In fact, the only player that started the 2007 campaign at the same position he started in 2006 is right guard Deuce Lutui. Reggie Wells, who started the final nine games at right tackle in 2006, moved to left guard. Additions to the line included free agent center Al Johnson (Dallas), left tackle Mike Gandy (Buffalo) and 2007 first-round draft pick (fifth overall) right tackle Levi Brown. As significant as the changes to the offensive line were in the offseason, the Cardinals didn t get very far into the regular season before more changes were necessary. Center Al Johnson went down with a knee injury at the beginning of the third quarter of the season opener at San Francisco and was replaced by 2007 undrafted rookie free agent Lyle Sendlein. Despite the fact that Sendlein received his welcome to the NFL moment extremely early in his career, the Cardinals managed to run for 161 yards on 38 carries at San Francisco. SENDLEIN S NUMBER CALLED Welcome to the NFL Lyle Sendlein! The rookie center learned quickly how much coaches and teammates expect you to know and understand once you slip on the uniform. After starting center Al Johnson went down with a knee injury early in the third quarter, Sendlein, who is a 2007 undrafted rookie free agent out of Texas, was suddenly in the middle of the action on Monday Night Football. Sendlein finished the game for the injured Johnson and figures to start this week s game vs. the Seahawks should Johnson be out for a while. Sendlein is from nearby Scottsdale and joins second year guard Deuce Lutui (Mesa) as the only Cardinals from the state Arizona. The former Longhorn is also part of another elite group. Sendlein and fullback Tim Castille (Alabama) are the only 2007 undrafted rookie free agents to make the Cardinals active roster. They join eight other former undrafted rookie free agents on Arizona s roster: Pos. Player College NFL Experience P Mike Barr Rutgers 1 TE Troy Bienemann Washington State 1 SS Oliver Celestin Texas Southern 4 LS Nathan Hodel Illinois 6 CB Roderick Hood Auburn 5 RB Marcel Shipp Massachusetts 7 WR Jerheme Urban Trinity 4 QB Kurt Warner Northern Iowa 10 DEFENSE IN THE OPENER Although the Cardinals could not extend their winning streak to five games over the 49ers in week one of the 2007 season, the defense did continue to hold defending NFC rushing champ Frank Gore in check with 18 rushes for only 55 yards as well as give quarterback Alex Smith fits in the pocket. Gore has yet to rush for 100 yard against the Cardinals in the five times he has faced them in his career. The other teams in the NFC West haven t been able to contain him. In 2006, neither Seattle nor St. Louis was able to keep Gore under 125 yards in any contest. St. Louis gave up 127 and 134 yards in their two meetings and Seattle allowed 212 and 144 yards in their clashes. In comparison, the Cardinals allowed 87 and 51 yards to Gore in Smith was rattled throughout the night as Cardinals defenders applied constant pressure, sacking him three times and forcing him into a 15-of-31 for 126 yards and a 59.3 rating. WEEK ONE QUICK TAKES -Cardinals running back Edgerrin James passed both Eddie George and Tiki Barber to reach 17 th place on the career rushing list after rushing for 92 yards in the season opener. James now has 10,477 career rushing yards. -The Cardinals defense is ranked first overall in the NFC after week one, earning the spot by ranking sixth against the run and second against the pass. The Cards defense is ranked second overall in the NFL behind Denver -Receiver Anquan Boldin s fourth quarter touchdown reception is his first against an NFC West opponent since the Cardinals hosted the 49ers in the 2006 season opener. -The 44 receiving yards that Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald combined for was the lowest total in a game that they have both appeared in. -Matt Leinart s 102 passing yards and 41.1 passer rating are the worst he has posted since taking over as the starter. -In the last nine NFC West contests, including Frank Gore s 55 yards on Monday Night, the Cardinals defense has not allowed a 100-yard rusher. The last NFC West running back to go over 100 yards against the Cardinals was Seattle s Shaun Alexander on 11/5/05 when he rushed for 173 yards on 23 carries in a Seahawks victory. -Welcome to the NFL Lyle Sendlein! The rookie free agent was swept into the spotlight on Monday Night Football after starting center Al Johnson went down with a left knee injury. -Despite losing starting center Al Johnson early in the third quarter, the Cardinals still managed 161 yards on the ground on 38 carries. 161 yards in the Cardinals highest opening week rushing total since the team piled up 167 yards on 33 carries at Cincinnati on 9/4/88. The majority of those 167 yards (110) came from RB Stump Mitchell, now a Seattle assistant. Cardinals vs. Seahawks Page 8 of 30

9 CARDS-SEAHAWKS CONNECTIONS Cardinals defensive backs coach Teryl Austin spent the last four years as the Seahawks defensive backs coach, mentoring such players as cornerback Marcus Trufant and strong safety Jordan Babineaux. Seattle head coach Mike Holmgren was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1970 in the eighth round of the NFL Draft. He went to camp with both the Cardinals and NY Jets that summer. Seattle running backs coach Stump Mitchell played for the Cardinals from ranking as one of the team s all time great running backs and kick returners. He is the Cardinals alltime leader in combined yardage with 11,988 yards and ranks second with 4,649 yards rushing on 986 attempts and 32 touchdowns. After his playing days, Mitchell coached Casa Grande H.S. where he led the team to a playoff berth in his second year. Seattle assistant defensive assistant/secondary coach Larry Marmie held the defensive backs coach position with the Cardinals from He went on to become the defensive coordinator for Cardinals from Seattle Vice President of Football Operations John Idzik spent the last three seasons as Senior Director of Football Operations for the Cardinals. Cardinals assistant defensive backs coach Rick Courtright was an assistant offensive line coach at the University of Washington from Cardinals defensive end Joe Tafoya was with the Seahawks from , appearing in 28 games with one start during the regular season while also appearing in five playoff contests. Tafoya collected 17 tackles, one sack and 24 special teams tackles for Seattle. Cardinals defensive end Rodney Bailey played for the Seahawks in 2005, appearing in eight regular season games and one playoff game. Cardinals wide receiver Jerheme Urban played with the Seahawks from after originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in Urban had 13 receptions for 268 yards and a TD for Seattle. Cardinals safety Oliver Celestin played for the Seahawks in 2006, appearing in 13 games while collecting three tackles and six special teams tackles during the regular season and also appeared in both of Seattle s postseason contests, collecting a special teams tackle in each. Arizona tight end Troy Bienneman attended school at Washington State where he was a teammate of Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant in Cardinals outside linebacker Chike Okeafor was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as a free agent in 2003 and was with the team through Okeafor started and appeared in 32 games for the Seattle with 16.5 sacks. Cardinals fullback Terrelle Smith and Seahawks free safety Brian Russell are from West Covina, California. h STOPPING ALEXANDER Since joining the NFC West in 2002, the Cardinals have faced the Seahawks 10 times with only three wins. Seattle s Pro Bowl running back Shawn Alexander has been lined up against the Cardinals in each one of those games. Alexander s statistics mirror the Seahawk s success, as he has been the key to almost all of Seattle s victories over the Cardinals. In 10 games against the Cardinals, Alexander has rushed for 962 yards on 198 attempts for 4.9-yard average and 15 touchdowns. In the Cardinals three wins however, Alexander has averaged on 59.3 yards-per-game on the ground and has been held scoreless. In the Seahawks seven wins, Alexander has averaged yards-per-game and just over two touchdowns. In 2006, the Cardinals fared well against Alexander, holding him under 100 yards rushing in both contests (89 and 76 yards) with one touchdown. The Cardinals split the season series with Seattle. In 2005 however, Alexander rushed for 313 yards (140 and 173 yards) against the Cards with six touchdowns. Arizona lost both contests in THE YOUNG AND THE TALENTED The Cardinals have a wealth of talent on both the offensive and defensive sides of the field. Among them are Pro Bowlers, up-and-coming stars and NFL record holders. Not only are they talented, they are young as well. A look at the starters on each side of the ball gives a good indication of just how young and promising the Cardinals lineup is at many positions: Offense Defense WR Boldin 26 DE Berry 32 RG Lutui 24 DT Dockett 26 LG Wells 26 DT Watson 23 RT Brown 23 DE A. Smith 25 TE Pope 24 LB Dansby 25 WR Fitzgerald 24 LB Hayes 26 WR B. Johnson 26 LB Pace 26 QB Leinart 24 CB Green 25 RB James 29 CB Hood 25 C A. Johnson 28 SS Wilson 27 LT Gandy 28 FS Holt 27 The average age on the Cardinals roster is 26.3 and with the addition of such rookies as DT Alan Branch and WR Steve Breaston, the Cardinals continue adding young talent to an already young and talented roster. With the contract extensions of LB Gerald Hayes and DT Darnell Dockett during the 2006 season, the Cardinals have proven that their youth movement has yielded players who started and will continue to grow within the organization. 10 SUPER BACKS The Cardinals have one of the NFL s premier running backs in their backfield in Edgerrin James. James, the NFL s active leading rusher, is a four-time Pro Bowler and has led the NFL is rushing three times in his career. As for the other top backs in the league, many of them will be lining up against the Cardinals in Arizona will face a Pro Bowl running back in 12 of its 16 games this year. This is without taking into account some younger backs poised for stardom such as Reggie Bush in New Orleans, Willis McGahee is Baltimore and Kevin Jones in Detroit. The Cardinals home opener this week will not only feature James but one of the league s best backs over the last several years and 2005 NFL MVP, Shawn Alexander. The NFC West houses Pro Bowl running backs on all four teams with James, Frank Gore (San Francisco), Alexander and Steven Jackson (St. Louis), each of whom the Cardinals will face twice in 07. Here is a rundown of backs the Cardinals are scheduled to face in 2007: Frank Gore (SF) Shaun Alexander (Sea) Steven Jackson (StL) Willis McGahee (Bal) Willie Parker (Pit) DeShaun Foster (Car) Clinton Portis (Was) Carnell Williams (TB) Tatum Bell and Kevin Jones (Det) Rudi Johnson (Cin) Jamal Lewis (Cle) Reggie Bush and Deuce McAllister (NO) Warrick Dunn (Atl) ALL-ARIZONA TEAM When the Cardinals drafted guard Deuce Lutui in the second round of the 2006 draft, he became the first Arizona native to be drafted by the Cardinals since their move to the desert in In 2007, guard/center Lyle Sendlein, a Scottsdale native, was signed as an undrafted rookie free agent from Texas and made the 53-man roster after impressing during training camp and the preseason. With the addition of Sendlein, a total of 14 Arizonans have played for the Arizona Cardinals. 11 100 MORE EQUALS 53 Edgerrin James rushed for three 100-yard rushing games in 2006, giving him 52 for his career. In doing so, he became the third fastest player in NFL history to reach the mark (108 games). Only Hall of Famers Eric Dickerson and Jim Brown accomplished the feat in fewer games. MAKING A MOVE Having entrenched himself among the top 20 All-Time NFL rushing leaders in 2006 when he moved into 19 th place, James made a significant move up the list in the season opener vs. San Francisco. It didn t take long for James to get to the 17 th spot, as he only needed 65 yards to pass Tiki Barber for that spot. If James rushes for 1,000 yards for the second consecutive season in Arizona, he will at least reach Washington great John Riggins who currently sits in 13 th place with 11,352 career yards. Entering 2007, James is the only active player on the Top 20 rushing list. All-Time NFL Rushing Leaders: Rk Player Att. Yds. 12 LEINART ENTERS YEAR TWO The Matt Leinart era in Arizona began earlier than expected in After taking over the starting role in week five against Kansas City, Leinart performed well in his first NFL action. Leinart showed significant improvement as the year went on, improving his stats in nearly every category over the last six weeks of the season. Some of Leinart s accomplishments in his first year: Set NFL rookie record for passing yards in a game with Min (11/26). Leinart became the first rookie in NFL history to pass for more than 400 yards in a game. Started 11 games and set the Cardinals franchise record for passing yards by a rookie with 2,547, breaking Jake Plummer s previous record of 2,203 set in Became the first Cardinals quarterback since Jake Plummer in 2001 to have three games in a season with a 100+ quarterback rating. Threw for 200 yards or more in eight games while completing 60% or more of his passes in five of his final six starts of the season. WARNER RETURNS Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner returns to for his 10 th NFL season in One of the greatest success stories in NFL history, Warner will serve as the back-up to starter Matt Leinart. It is not a bad position to be in for the Cardinals. Especially when your backup QB enters the season having posted a passer rating in the preseason after completing 16- of-20 passes for 245 yards and a TD. Warner was never sacked nor intercepted in the preseason and continued to show why he is one of the most accurate QBs in league history by completing 80% of his passes. LEINART STARTS CAREER HOT Leinart completed 22 of 35 passes (63%) for 253 yards in his first NFL start vs. Kansas City on 10/8/06. Only three other quarterbacks in the last 50 years have completed 60% of their passes for 250 yards or more in their first career start: Roman Gabriel (L.A. Rams, 1962), Dan Marino (Dolphins, 1983) and Brent Pease, a replacement player for the Houston Oilers during the 1987 players' strike. Leinart also connected with Anquan Boldin (49 yards) and Larry Fitzgerald (five yards) on touchdown passes in the first quarter. Only one other quarterback in the Super Bowl era of the NFL threw for two or more touchdowns in the first quarter of his first start: Doug Pederson of the Eagles (Sept. 12, 1999 vs. Cardinals). LEINART SETS NFL ROOKIE RECORD Matt Leinart s 405 passing yards at Minnesota (11/26) were the most ever by a rookie and the most in the NFL in week 12. Leinart became the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to hit the 400 yard mark. 13 BOLDIN STILL BREAKING RECORDS In his first four seasons with the Cardinals, Anquan Boldin has recorded 346 receptions, topping the 100-catch mark in two of those four seasons. Boldin was the fastest player to reach 200 receptions, reaching the milestone in November of In 2006, Boldin became the fastest receiver ever to 300 receptions. After 57 career games, Boldin s 346 receptions top even the most elite receivers in NFL history. Names like Jerry Rice, Michael Irvin, Tim Brown and Marvin Harrison have numbers well below Boldin s. In fact, Boldin s 346 receptions through 57 games are 62 more than the next closest on that list, Marvin Harrison, who had 284. Boldin became the fastest to 300 receptions on October 22, 2006 in Oakland during his 47 th career game. That was seven games than the previous record holder Lionel Taylor of Denver. Here s where Boldin stands after 57 games compared to some of the most elite receivers in NFL history: Receiver Receptions Anquan Boldin Marvin Harrison Jerry Rice Michael Irvin Terrell Owens Tim Brown..118 SO YOUNG IT IS SCARY Even though he just turned 24 (August 31), wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has already had one impressive career. He has a Pro Bowl appearance, 3,155 yards receiving on 233 receptions and nine career 100-yard games. Now in his fourth season in the NFL, the scariest thing about Fitzgerald is that he is only going to get better as he gets older. Fitzgerald is the youngest receiver on the team despite the fact that he has started in 46 games already. He established the franchise record for receptions in a season with 103 in 2005, only his second year in the NFL. In fact, at 22 years and 123 days, Fitzgerald became the youngest receiver in NFL history to record a 100-catch campaign when he reached the milestone at Indianapolis on 1/1/06. In 2006, Fitzgerald missed the first action of his NFL career when he had to sit out weeks 6-8 with a hamstring injury. Despite the missed time, Fitzgerald fell only 54 yards short of his second consecutive 1,000-yard season. In 2007, Fitzgerald can reach a few more milestones if he continues at his current pace. He can: Become only the eighth receiver in Cardinals history with two 1,000-yard seasons. Reach 4,000 career receiving yards with 865 yards in With 70 receptions, he will reach 300 for his career. 28 AND COUNTING Cardinals Pro Bowl receivers Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin began piling up individual records and achievements as soon as they broke into the NFL. They have Pro Bowl appearances, reception records and yardage milestones and as impressive as those numbers are, you get a better idea of their dominance of the Cardinals record books as a duo. Entering the 2007 season and dating back to the beginning of Boldin s rookie year of 2003, he and Fitzgerald have accounted for all yard receiving games for the Cardinals, shattering the marks put up by other well known Cardinals receiving duos of the past. Players From Games Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin 9/7/03-1/1/07 28* Frank Sanders, Rob Moore 9/29/96-12/27/98 20 Pat Tilley, Roy Green 11/2/80-11/4/84 15 Mal Kutner, Billy Dewell 10/13/46-11/14/48 14 *led NFL with 15 in 2005 Wide receiver Bryant Johnson, who also entered the league in 2003, has threatened the streak in the past. In a career year in 2006, Johnson had three 80+ yard performances, including a career-high 87 yards at Oakland on October 30. If Johnson continues his steady progress, it is just a matter of time before he comes the 51 st Cardinal receiver to have a 100-yard performance. COMBINE AND CONQUER No Cardinals receiving duo has ever gone for 100+ yards in the same game more times than Boldin and Fitzgerald. Between 2005 and 2006, they accomplished the feat five times and when they did it at Minnesota on Nov. 26, 2006, they became the first duo in team history to each record 140 or more yards in the same game. Fitzgerald and Boldin have both gone for 100 or more yards in a game five times, four of those coming in their record setting 2005 campaign. Two former Cardinals tandems (Roy Green/ J.T. Smith and Bobby Joe Conrad/ Jackie Smith) accomplished the feat three times while three other pairings (Frank Sanders/ Rob Moore, Ernie Jones/ Roy Green and Dave Stief/ Pat Tilley) accomplished it twice. 14 FRESH FROM HAWAII Cardinals strong safety Adrian Wilson entered the 2007 season the way he feels he should have entered the last couple of seasons, fresh off a Pro Bowl appearance. Wilson made it virtually impossible for voters to keep him away from Hawaii with his performance in The seventh year pro became the first player in NFL history with two touchdowns of 99+ yards in the same season after he returned both an interception and a fumble for touchdowns. On October 1 at Atlanta, Wilson picked off a Michael Vick pass that turned what might have been a 16-3 second quarter lead into a 10-9 Cardinals lead when he ran it back 99 yards for the third touchdown of his career. On November 26 at Minnesota he scooped up a Chester Taylor fumble in the fourth quarter and returned it for a touchdown as the Vikings tried to put away the game in the fourth quarter. Along with becoming the only defender with two 99-yard touchdowns in the same season, Wilson became the only NFL player in history with multiple 99-yarders without the benefit of a kickoff return. Wilson rounded out his Pro Bowl season by leading the team in interceptions (4), forced fumbles (4), fumble recoveries (2, tie), tackles for a loss (8), and was third in tackles (87) and fourth in sacks (5). DANSBY RETURNS ON TOP AGAIN Having experienced significant success despite facing numerous obstacles in his first three years with the Cardinals as an outside linebacker, fourth-year pro Karlos Dansby didn t miss a beat after being moved to inside linebacker by the team s new coaching staff. In the week one contest at San Francisco on Monday Night Football, Dansby proved that the move inside wouldn t slow his development as one of the NFL s most exciting young defensive playmakers. In his first game at his new position, Dansby led all defenders and tied a personal high with 12 tackles while also forcing an Alex Smith fumble when he and defensive end Bertrand Berry sacked Smith in the second quarter, leading to an Edgerrin James touchdown run which gave the Cardinals a 10-7 lead early in the game. In 2006 it was injuries that threatened to derail Dansby s progress. Despite starting in only ten games, Dansby fought his way through numerous preseason injuries to turn in yet another impressive season. After missing all of the preseason and the first regular season contest, Dansby returned and finished the season ranked second on the team with 94 tackles. Dansby s also had three mulit-sack games in 2006, finishing the season with 8.0 sacks, the most by a Cardinals linebacker since Ken Harvey had 9.5 in ARIZONA REUNION When the Cardinals were searching for a new free safety this past offseason, they had one voice in their ear that had some strong opinions on the matter Pro Bowl strong safety Adrian Wilson. Wilson was lobbying for his former North Carolina State teammate and best friend Terrence Holt. Holt the brother of Rams wide receiver Torry Holt, had spent the last four seasons as the free safety for the Detroit Lions. When he became a free agent following the 2006 season, Wilson thought he would be the perfect addition to the Cardinals defensive backfield. The Cardinals front office agreed and signed Holt to a five-year contract on 3/8/07. Both players left their mark at North Carolina State. Wilson s 254 career total tackles (144 solos) were the most by a Wolfpack defensive back since James Walker recorded 289 stops from Holt shattered that mark registering 315 tackles (195 solo) in his career, tying with Mark Franklin ( ) for 14 th in N.C. State history. Holt also made his mark on special teams racking up 13 career blocked kicks and tying Hawaii s Mike Akiu (1982) in 2001 for the NCAA season-record of four. During the two seasons Wilson and Holt played together in Raleigh they helped N.C. State to 14 wins, which was the best two season win total since the Wolfpack won 16 games in seasons. Other players on those teams that are currently playing in the NFL are the Chargers Phillip Rivers, Packers Koren Robinson, Lions Corey Smith, Jaguars Brian Williams, Seahawks Sean Locklear, Bengals Scott Kooistra and the Jets Jerricho Cotchery. BERRY BACK IN 2007 Cardinals defensive end/linebacker Bertrand Berry is no stranger to adversity, or overcoming it. Originally drafted by the Colts as a linebacker, Berry moved to defensive end early in his career. Following his stint with the Colts, Berry signed with the St. Louis Rams but didn t make it through training camp. Berry then spent 2000 out of football. After a tryout with the Denver Broncos on New Years Day 2001, Berry signed with the Broncos where he spent three seasons before signing with the Cardinals in After recording an NFC high 14.5 sacks and being named to his first career Pro Bowl in 2004, Berry was on pace for another trip to Hawaii in 2005, recording six sacks in the first eight games before suffering a pectoral muscle injury vs. Seattle (11/6/05) and was placed on injured reserve. Berry headed into the 2006 season healthy and ready to chase down opposing quarterbacks. Berry was again back to form, collecting six sacks in the final five games he played before suffering a triceps injury vs. Detroit (11/19/106). For the second time in two years, one of the Cardinals unquestioned defensive leaders had to be placed on injured reserve. Back at full health, Berry entered the 2007 ready to reclaim his spot as one of the league s premier pass rushers. Cardinals vs. Seahawks Page 14 of 30

15 RETURNING RECORDS In the Patriots week one victory over the N.Y. Jets, cornerback Ellis Hobbs tied the record for the longest play in NFL history when he took the second-half kickoff 108 yards for a touchdown. In setting the record for the longest kickoff return, Hobbs topped the mark of 106 yards shared by three players, including former Cardinal Roy Green (See below). The longest play ever, 108 yards, was established by the Chicago Bears Nathan Vasher in 2005 and matched in 2006 by the Bears Devin Hester. Both Vasher and Hester returned missed field goal attempts to attain the record. Looking back through the NFL record books, it is not hard to locate players from the Cardinals organization fit neatly at the top of numerous Longest Touchdown categories. For example: Longest Kickoff Return: 106 Al Carmichael, Green Bay vs. Chi. Bears 10/7/56 Noland Smith, Kansas City vs. Denver 12/17/67 Roy Green, St. Louis Cardinals vs. Dallas 10/21/ Frank Seno, Chi. Cardinals vs. NY Giants 10/20/46 Ollie Matson, Chi. Cardinals vs. Wash. 10/14/56 Longest Fumble Return: JUST 100 MORE Cardinals placekicker Neil Rackers is coming off back-toback 100+ point seasons, something accomplished just one other time in Cardinals history. Cardinals back Pat Harder was the first player in NFL history to have three consecutive 100-point seasons ( ). If Rackers can make it three years in a row with at least 100 points he will not only share the franchise record with Harder, but he will also move into second place on the Cardinals alltime points list. He needs exactly 100 points to move ahead of Greg Davis, who currently sits in second place with 484 career points. Cardinal great Jim Bakken holds the Cardinals career points record with 1,380. If the preseason is any indicator, Rackers should have no trouble reaching the 100-point milestone again in 2007, again showing the accuracy and leg strength that made him one of the elite kickers in the league in Cardinals All-Time Points Leaders Player, Years Points Jim Bakken, ,380 Greg Davis, Neil O Donoghue, Roy Green, Pat Harder, Bobby Joe Conrad, Neil Rackers, Sonny Randle, Aeneas Williams, vs. Washington, 11/5/00 BARR BREAKS THROUGH Cardinals punter Mike Barr finally made an NFL regular season roster and when he did, he had some big shoes to fill. Claimed off waivers by the Arizona on 8/28/07, Barr replaces Scott Player, the Cardinals all-time leader in total career punts (714), yards (30,752) and punts downed inside the 20 (179). A 28-year old rookie, it would be hard not to root for Barr. His NFL story is one filled with disappointment and determination. Barr came into the NFL in 2003 as an undrafted rookie free agent, spending time with the Washington Redskins and New York Jets during preseason before being released by both teams. After spending the rest of the 2003 season out of football, Barr got another chance in 2004, signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and being sent to NFL Europe with the Frankfurt Galaxy. After returning from Europe Barr was released by the Steelers at the conclusion of training camp. And that is where his story gets repetitive. Barr spent the seasons doing the same thing getting signed by the Steelers and getting sent to NFL Europe to play for the Frankfurt Galaxy only to be cut on his return. His story changed slightly in 2007, when he was again with the Steelers during the preseason, was released and then signed with his old coaches in Arizona. In his first NFL action at San Francisco, Barr performed well in winds that reached up to 20 mph. He punted seven times for an average of 37.0 yards per punt, also dropping three kicks inside the 49er 20 yard line. ALUMNI CAPTAINS Throughout the 2007 season the Cardinals will be honoring former players who have made significant contributions to the team throughout its history. Earlier this year, the Cardinals made a commitment to ensuring that the tradition and history of the team will be developed and shared when former Cardinal offensive lineman Bill Lewis was named the team s first Manager of Alumni Relations. One of the programs the Cardinals have developed in 2007 is the Honorary Alumni Captain program. The Cardinals will be honoring a former player before each home game by designating an honorary captain for the game. In this week s home opener vs. Seattle, the Cardinals have named former running back Larry Centers an honorary captain. Centers, who played in Arizona from , is the Cardinals career leader in receptions with 535. Out of the backfield, Centers is responsible for two of the top five receiving seasons for the Cardinals, hauling in 101 receptions in 1995 and 99 receptions in Centers 95 total was a franchise single-season record until current receivers Larry Fitzgerald (103) and Anquan Boldin (102) surpassed the mark in Appearing in 198 games (107 starts) for his career, which also included stops in Washington ( ), Buffalo ( ) and New England (2003), Centers rushed for 2,188 yards and 14 touchdowns on 615 carries and caught 827 passes for 6,797 yards and 28 touchdowns.
