1 Arizona Cardinals Football Club Game Release Game #4 THIS WEEK S GAME Arizona pays its first visit to Raymond James Stadium since Super Bowl XLIII when the Cardinals face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week. The game against Tampa Bay represents the end of a long trip away from home for the Cardinals, who are spending the week in Sarasota and training at IMG Academy in Bradenton after playing in New Orleans last week. The Cardinals are coming off a 31-7 loss in New Orleans that saw three starters suffer serious injuries with LBs Sam Acho (leg) and Lorenzo Alexander (foot) now out for the season and S Rashad Johnson missing part of his left middle finger following a gruesome injury on a tackle of RB Darren Sproles in the first half. Missing from the game was DT Dan Williams, who tragically lost his father, Thomas, in a traffic accident while driving to New Orleans to see his son play. The action on the field started well for Arizona, who drove 80 yards on 11 plays on the opening drive of the game for a 7-0 lead following a 3-yard TD run by Alfonso Smith. After New Orleans answered on the ensuing drive, the Cardinals offense was unable to capitalize on favorable field position and would not score again in the contest. Arizona was kept in the game well into the third quarter by a defense that stiffened after allowing the initial TD. DT Darnell Dockett led the charge by tying a career-high with 3.0 sacks while rookie S Tyrann Mathieu recorded his first INT. Following the matchup in Tampa Bay, the Cardinals return home to face the Carolina Panthers. The Buccaneers will have their bye week. Starter Max Hall threw two picks that were returned for TDs before exiting in favor of Derek Anderson. He led the comeback effort but a costly INT in the closing minutes sealed Arizona s fate. Hall posted his first career TD a 3-yarder to Larry Fitzgerald on the Cards 2 nd drive. The next AZ series ended when LB Geno Hayes INT d a Hall pass and returned it 41 yards for the gametying TD. Early in the 2nd a muffed punt by Tampa was recovered by LaRod Stephens-Howling at the TB16. That led to a 1-yard scoring run from RB Beanie Wells, who made his first career start. After going 3-n-out on their first 3 drives, Tampa Bay picked up its first 1 st down on a 31-yard Josh Freeman to Mike Williams pass. Two plays later the two connected on a 47-yard TD that tied it at 14. The Bucs surged ahead on the next drive when Aqib Talib returned another Hall INT 45 yards for a TD. Anderson then took over at QB and after a drive that ended on an incomplete pass on 4 th down, the Bucs marched 94 yards and went up on Connor Barth s 21-yard FG. Tampa went up 17 with 4:35 to go in the 3 rd on LeGarrette Blount s 15-yard TD run that capped an 8-play, 80-yard drive. The Cards answered with a long drive (7-76) that ended on Stephens- Howling s 30-yard TD run. On the next play from scrimmage, Blount fumbled and Gerald Hayes returned the fumble 21 yards for a TD that trimmed the lead to A Joey Porter sack killed the next drive and on the first play of the next AZ series Anderson hit Steve Breaston on a 36-yard pass to the 12. On 3 rd -n-3 from the 5, Anderson found Fitzgerald with the go-ahead TD. Down with just over 7:00 to play Freeman picked up a 1 st down on 4 th -n-inches at the TB45 and on the next snap he found WR Arrelious Benn for a 53-yard completion to the 1. Blount carried it in a play later. AZ took over at its 19 but on 1 st down Stephens-Howling was separated from a pass and LB Barrett Ruud corralled it for an INT. But after 2 stuffed runs and a Will Davis sack that lost 14 yards, Kerry Rhodes tipped Barth s 53-yard FG try and the Cards took over at their own 32 down 3 with 3:16 to go. They reached the TB20 with 2:15 to play but Anderson s 1 st down pass to Fitzgerald was INT d by Talib at the 6. The Cards would get the ball back once more in the final minute but not threaten. ANOTHER WEEK IN FLORIDA After playing in New Orleans, the Cardinals boarded a flight and headed straight to Florida on Sunday. This is not the first trip of its kind for the Cardinals. During the 2008 season, Arizona spent the week between road games at Washington and at the New York Jets in Tyson s Corner, VA. Later that season, after earning a berth in Super Bowl XLIII, Arizona spent a week in Florida training at the Buccaneers training facility One Buccaneer Place. The Cardinals have a history of extended stays during the preseason as well, having spent a week on the campus of Missouri Western University in 2012 while preparing to face the Chiefs following a preseason opener against the Saints in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, OH. During the 2010 preseason, the Cardinals followed a Monday Night matchup against the Titans with an extended stay in Nashville in preparation for a meeting with the Bears in Chicago the following Saturday. CARDS FACTS PLAYING IN TAMPA The Cardinals enter Raymond James Stadium this week for the first time since the team s appearance in Super Bowl XLIII against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Arizona enters this week s game having lost three straight in Tampa and are looking for their first road win against the Buccaneers since the 1988 season. The Cardinals last road win in Tampa Bay which came in a victory on 9/18/88 was the first win for the franchise following the relocation to the Valley prior to the season. This week s game will mark just the Cardinals secondever regular season contest at Raymond James Stadium, which opened in Between 2000 and 2012, the Cardinals played three games in the state of Florida (Jax-2005, 09; TB-2007; Mia-2004). Arizona plays two games in Florida this season (TB-Week 4; Jax-Week 11). Having last played in Tampa Bay during the 2007 season, WR Larry Fitzgerald and DT Darnell Dockett the team s two most tenured players are the only two Cardinals players in the starting lineup that game that are expected to start this week. MADDON AND THE CARDS Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon is a long-time Cardinals fan and has a reputation for not missing a Cards game. It has been that way since he became a Cardinals fan back in 1962 after his father gave him a St. Louis (baseball) Cardinals hat. It didn t matter that the hat didn t represent the football team, he was hooked on St. Louis sports instantly. He stuck with the Cardinals and has been a die-hard fan ever since. "Since 1962 I've liked this team," Maddon said in the run-up to Super Bowl XLIII, when he attended the Cardinal- Steelers matchup in Tampa Bay. "This goes back to when Charley Johnson was the quarterback and when MacArthur Lane was the running back and Conrad Dobler was the meanest, dirtiest left guard in all of football. Air Coryell-I went through the whole thing. Neil Lomax, Portland State, I got it all." Currently in a battle for a Wild Card berth and a spot in the postseason, the Rays will play the final game of baseball s regular season at Toronto on Sunday.

4 LAST WEEK S GAME SAINTS 31, CARDINALS 7 September 22, 2013 Mercedes-Benz Superdome (73,057) The Cardinals (1-1) traveled to New Orleans to take on the 2-0 Saints in one of the NFL s more challenging venues for visitors. Nonetheless, Arizona received the opening kickoff and moved 80 yards in 11 plays. QB Carson Palmer completed 4 of 5 passes for 44 yards and RB Alfonso Smith put the Cards up 7-0 with his 3-yard TD run. New Orleans answered quickly, responding with its own 80-yard scoring drive. Most of that yardage came via Drew Brees completions, including a 27-yard game-tying TD pass to WR Robert Meachem. Each team would possess the ball six more times before halftime. All of Arizona s ended with a Dave Zastudil punt. Of the six New Orleans drives, four ended with punts and one ended when time ran out in the second quarter. The other, however, was a 6-play, 58-yard scoring drive that Brees capped with a 16-yard TD pass to TE Jimmy Graham that put New Orleans up 14-7 at intermission. The Saints took the opening kickoff of the 2 nd half and marched to the AZ29 before Cards rookie safety (and New Orleans native) Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Brees 3 rd -n-10 pass in the end zone. While the Arizona offense could not find its rhythm, New Orleans added 10 points on consecutive drives with a 31-yard Garrett Hartley FG and a 5-yard Brees TD run on 3 rd -n-goal. Trailing 24-7 early in the 4 th, the Cardinals desperately needed a score. Palmer completions to Larry Fitzgerald (26 yards) and Michael Floyd (13 & 20) quickly moved the team to the New Orleans 19. However, Palmer s pass attempt to TE Rob Housler was intercepted by Saints rookie safety Kenny Vaccaro. New Orleans converted that takeway into another Brees-to-Graham TD pass that made it 31-7 and proved to be the final margin. Foremost among the thoughts of the Cardinals on this afternoon was starting NT Dan Williams, who missed the game after his father Thomas was killed in a car accident traveling from Memphis to New Orleans to watch his son. Fellow DT Darnell Dockett stepped up to record three of Arizona s four sacks of Brees, matching a career high. During the game, Arizona s defense lost two starting LBs to injury, Lorenzo Alexander (foot) and Sam Acho (leg). They also lost S Rashad Johnson late in the 2 nd quarter when he suffered an injury to his finger that would cause him to lose a portion of it. CARDINALS SAINTS Team Qtr. 5 A TRAGIC LOSS FOR WILLIAMS Cardinals NT Dan Williams did not make the trip to New Orleans last week after suffering the tragic loss of his father, Thomas Williams, in a car accident. A regular fixture at Cardinals games both at home and on the road, Thomas Williams who made his home in Memphis, TN was on the way to New Orleans to watch Dan play when the accident occurred. Williams mother and sister were also in the car and were both hospitalized. They are both expected to recover from their injuries. "We miss him, said Williams defensive line mate DT Darnell Dockett. But family is more important than the National Football League on any level, and he needs to take as much time as he can with his family. We're going to welcome him back and embrace him, but he needs to spend as much time with his family as need be." ALEXANDER AND ACHO OUT FOR THE YEAR In the loss to New Orleans last week, starting LBs Lorenzo Alexander and Sam Acho both suffered injuries that landed them on injured reserve, ending their seasons. Alexander, a team captain who is in his first year with the Cardinals after signing as a free agent in the offseason, suffered a foot injury early in the contest. A Pro Bowler on special teams with the Redskins in 2012, Alexander has not missed a contest since the 2008 season finale, a streak of 67 games. In his six-plus NFL seasons dating back to 2007, Alexander has appeared in 95 of a possible 99 games in the regular season and had never played in fewer than 13 games in a season. Acho suffered a broken fibula near the end of the third quarter last week, ending his third NFL season. He has appeared in all 35 games since the Cardinals selected him in the fourth round (103 rd overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft, including starts in 28 of the last 29 games. To fill one of the roster spots created by the injuries, the Cardinals elevated LB Dontay Moch from the practice squad. A Phoenix native, Moch has been with the Cards practice squad since signing on 9/2/13. He spent the previous two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, who selected him in the third round (66 th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. NOTES FROM WEEK 3 Smith Adds to His Resume RB Alfonso Smith scored the Cardinals lone TD on a threeyard run on the opening drive of the game. For Smith, it was his second career rushing TD and first since 10/23/11 vs. Pittsburgh. Smith s 21-yard run earlier in the drive was the longest run of his career. Ta amu and Okafor Debut Last week s game marked the NFL debut of DT Alameda Ta amu and LB Alex Okafor. A fourth round selection (109 th overall) of the Steelers in 2012 who was released and claimed off waivers by the Cardinals, Ta amu made the start in place of DT Dan Williams and recorded three tackles and a tackle for loss. A rookie out of Texas, Okafor was selected by the Cardinals in the fourth round (103 rd overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He finished the game with a special teams tackle after appearing in five plays on defense and 20 plays on special teams. Quick Hits DT Darnell Dockett recorded six tackles, his highest total since 11/4/12 at Green Bay. The 46-yard kickoff return in the second quarter by CB Javier Arenas was the longest kickoff return of his career. THE MISSING PIECE Cardinals S Rashad Johnson left last week s game against the Saints with a little less of himself after he lost the end of his left middle finger while he attempted a tackle of New Orleans RB Darren Sproles during a punt return. Originally thinking he broke the finger, Johnson noticed blood soaking his glove. After trainers cut off a portion of the glove, he realized that his finger was pretty much severed at the top and still inside his now-removed glove. The fifth-year safety took the gruesome injury in stride. Guys end up with bad biceps, bad shoulders, bad fingers, Johnson said. It s a part of the game that a lot of the fans don t get an opportunity to see. They think it s a fun game we get to go out and play, which it is, but it does requires high risk and that s something we have to accept. When our team needs us on the next Sunday, if we can play we need to dress up and do it. It s our job. Head coach Bruce Arians said that the injury to Johnson will be evaluated throughout the week and that he may be able to play in this week s game against the Buccaneers if the injury heals sufficiently. To lose part of a finger, that s something you can t really just put back on, Johnson said. It s something I have to adjust to. But at the end of the day, I ve got nine more. BIG IMPACT FROM MATHIEU One of the most electrifying players in college football during his days at LSU, S Tyrann Mathieu was known for his ability to create problems for opposing offenses. In just two seasons with the Tigers, he recorded four INTs, 16 passes defensed, eight fumble recovered and 11 forced fumbles, which tied the SEC all-time record. The Cardinals third round selection (69 th overall) in the 2013 NFL Draft, it took Mathieu just over 12 minutes into his first NFL game to make one of the Cards biggest plays and he has been doing the same since. Mathieu Through Three Through his first three career games, Mathieu has recorded 19 tackles, four passes defensed, a forced fumble and an INT. His 19 tackles rank second on the team behind LB Karlos Dansby (32) while his four passes defensed are tied with CB Jerraud Powers for second behind Dansby (5). At St. Louis (Week 1) After Rams QB Sam Bradford hit TE Jared Cook over the middle for a big gain, Mathieu chased down the play from behind and knocked the ball loose just as Cook was about to cross the goal line after a 47-yard gain. The ball rolled into the end zone where it was recovered by LB Karlos Dansby for a touchback, keeping the game scoreless in the first quarter. Vs. Detroit (Week 2) Making his first career start, Mathieu finished the game with six tackles, a tackle for loss and a pass defensed in the win over the Lions. Steve has earned this position, Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said when announcing Keim s promotion. As I went through the process of evaluating the field of candidates and speaking to people, both inside our training facility and outside, I became more and more convinced that Steve Keim was the right man to be the general manager for the Arizona Cardinals. A Pennsylvania native, Keim was a two-time All-ACC selection at guard at N.C. State before going on to a brief stint in professional football as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins (1996) and Edmonton Eskimos (1997) of the Canadian Football League. Led the Colts to a 9-3 record in his 12 games and helped Indianapolis clinch a playoff berth while tying the NFL record for most wins ever by an interim coach. Arians and Pagano shared Coach of the Year honors from the Maxwell Club in Philadelphia and were named AFC Coach of the Year by NFL 101 in Kansas City. Indy s nine-win improvement from 2011 (2-14 to 11-5) matched the third-largest single-season turnaround in NFL history. Luck had an NFL rookie record six 300-yard passing games and led the Colts on seven game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or OT, the most by a rookie QB since the 1970 merger. In all, Indy s rookies also combined for 3,108 yards rushing and receiving, the most of any team since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger according to STATS LLC. AN ACCOMPLISHED ROOKIE The 2013 season represents the beginning of the Bruce Arians era in Arizona. Hired as the Cardinals head coach on 1/17/13, the first-time head coach came to Arizona as the reigning AP NFL Coach of the Year following his work with the Indianapolis Colts in A former QB at Virginia Tech ( ), Arians began his coaching career in 1975 as a graduate assistant at his alma mater. He was also the Steelers wide receivers coach when they won Super Bowl XL. NOT JUST THE HEAD COACH NFL head coaches come from a variety of backgrounds. Some are defensive specialists while some have experience rooted in the offensive side of the ball. Cardinals first-year head coach Bruce Arians has earned a reputation as one of the NFL s most aggressive play callers in his time with Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. Arians will utilize those skills as an offensive specialist with the Cardinals, continuing to call the plays from the sidelines, opting to continue doing what only a handful of NFL head coaches do when taking over the leadership role. There are only seven coaches in the NFL that call the offensive plays, with many relying on their coordinators. Below is a list of NFL head coaches who call their own plays: NFL Head Coaches Calling Plays on Offense Bruce Arians (Arizona) Andy Reid (Kansas City) Marc Trestman (Chicago) Sean Payton (New Orleans) Mike McCarthy (Green Bay) Chip Kelly (Philadelphia) Gary Kubiak (Houston) QUICK TURNAROUND Bruce Arians has been a part of 13 different playoff teams in his 20 seasons as an NFL coach. 9 REMARKABLE RECOVERY That Cardinals quarterback coach Freddie Kitchens was with the team when it reported to training camp on July 25 th was remarkable considering the scare he endured just 50 days earlier. At an OTA practice on June 4 th, Kitchens began to feel ill. QBs Drew Stanton and Carson Palmer sensed that something was wrong and called over the team s head trainer Tom Reed. Anyone who knows Freddie s personality, he s jovial and easy-going, Stanton said. He was joking around asking if a heart attack is on the left or right side, going for the chuckle, and then said Actually, it s kind of in the middle here. I told him, Freddie, that sounds kind of serious, and Carson (Palmer) said Yeah Freddie, you don t look so good, you re kind of flush. He tried to say he was OK, but we called Tom (Reed) over and he was monitoring him. The trainers arranged for Kitchens to be taken to the hospital for tests and during that process, a CT scan revealed tears in his aorta that required surgery, which he had that same night after being flown to the Arizona Heart Hospital. "We never even talked about how soon I would be back," Kitchens said after the team reported to camp. "It's really the same way you do it in football. You just do the best you can every day and you see where you're at in the end. It just so happened I was well enough to get back to work. When he was on the sideline for the Week 1 season opener against St. Louis, Kitchens was just 96 days removed from heart surgery. RECORD HOLDER RETURNS The running backs on the Arizona roster have a lot of work to do to live up to the legacy left by their position coach, Stump Mitchell, while he played with the Cardinals. A standout RB and return specialist for nine seasons with the Cards from , Mitchell enters his first season as RBs coach with the Cardinals and 12 th season as an NFL assistant. A ninth round selection (226 th overall) by the Cardinals in the 1981 NFL Draft, Mitchell spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the Cards. He currently holds the franchise record with 11,988 all-purpose yards and ranks second all-time in rushing yards (4,649), punt return yards (1,377) and kickoff return yards (4,007), while also adding 1,955 career receiving yards. Mitchell finished his career having posted a 4.7-yard average, which ranks as the second-highest career mark in team history. He posted a 5.6-yard rushing average in 1981, earning All-Rookie honors from Pro Football Weekly, who also awarded him All-NFC honors as a kickoff returner in PRATT IN 35 th NFL SEASON Cardinals pass rush specialist Tom Pratt kicked off his 35 th year coaching in the NFL in 2013 after starting his career in 1963 with the Kansas City Chiefs. Before coaching the Kansas City defensive line in Super Bowl I and earning a title in Super Bowl IV, Pratt held the same position for the Chiefs while they were members of the American Football League, earning him the honor of being the only active NFL assistant to have coached in the AFL. Pratt is also the only current coach in the NFL to be on staff during each of the last six decades (60 s, 70 s, 80 s, 90 s, 00 s and 10 s). During his NFL tenure, Pratt has coached four Pro Football Hall of Famers, including two 2013 selections, has aided five players in reaching a combined 23 Pro Bowls and helped three players earn a combined seven All-Pro titles.
