But for the 3 rd time in 4 years they left University of Phoenix Stadium in defeat thanks to a Cardinals score on the game s final play. This time it was a 52-yard catch-and-run by LaRod Stephens-Howling that won it on the first possession of OT after Dallas missed a 49-yard game-winning FG try at the end of regulation. For the Cards, it was their 4 th win in 5 games and improved their record to 5-7. An outstanding defensive effort kept the game close throughout and limited the Cowboys to 75 rushing yards on 20 carries while posting a season-high 5 sacks of Tony Romo. Punter Dave Zastudil was also key, averaging 50.1 yards on his 7 punts with 5 over 50. AZ had just 49 total yards of offense in the 1 st half but was much more productive in the 2 nd half. Cowboys rookie K Dan Bailey entered the game with just one missed FG on the season and had made 26 in a row but was wide left from 53 yards out on Dallas first drive. From there, the Cards had back-to-back 15-yard plays - a pass to Roberts & run by Stephens-Howling - to set up a 48-yard Jay Feely FG. With 5:50 to go in the 1 st half, Bailey ricocheted a 50-yarder off the left upright to tie the game. The next Dallas drive started at the AZ33 following a Dez Bryant punt return. A completion to TE Jason Witten picked up 28 and Romo finished the drive with a 5-yard TD to Bryant. Arizona opened the 2 nd half strong as Kolb completed passes of 14 & 18 yards to Larry Fitzgerald before scrambling 17 yards to the Dallas 5. A false start on 4 th -n-goal at the 1 backed them into a 23-yard FG that made it Dallas responded with a 13-play, 65-yard drive that produced another Bailey FG. The Cards tied it on the next series with a 79-yard TD drive. The biggest play was a 40-yard pass from Kolb to Roberts that took it to the Dallas 33 and led to Beanie Wells 4-yard TD. With 3:00 left, Bryant returned a punt deep into AZ territory but it was wiped out by a block in the back penalty. Instead they started at their own 32 with 2:54 left. With about 30 seconds to go, Romo completed a 15-yard pass to Bryant on 3 rd -n-11 to take it to the AZ31. Instead of using one of their two remaining timeouts, the Cowboys spiked it with 0:07 left and lined up for a 49-yard FG. Bailey s attempt was right down the middle but Dallas called timeout just before the try. He was then short & left on the re-kick to send the game to overtime. The Cards won the toss and started at their own 20. Two completions to Roberts picked up 20 and he also drew a pass interference to pick-up a key first down on 2 nd -n-19. On 1 st -n-15 at the AZ 48, Kolb eluded a blitzing Cowboy, stepped to his right and tossed a short screen pass to Stephens-Howling out of the backfield. The 5-7 RB then zig-zagged 52 yards down the right sideline and into the end zone. COWBOYS CARDINALS Team Qtr. 4 CARDS 13 DEBUT IN GREEN BAY CARDS SHUT OUT THE PACKERS AT LAMBEAU Playing in front of a record crowd of 73,738 at Lambeau Field, the Cardinals defeated the Green Bay Packers 17-0 in the preseason opener for both teams. The Cardinals defense posted the first preseason shutout since 2008 (24-0 at Oakland). Arizona s last regular season shutout came in a 19-0 victory against the NY Giants on 12/12/92. DOING WHAT THEY DO BEST Only three NFL players (Tim Jennings-9, Stevie Brown and Richard Sherman-8) had more INTs than CB Patrick Peterson s seven during the 2012 season. It didn t take Peterson long to get back at it to begin preseason action, stepping in front of a Graham Harrell pass on the Packers second offensive series of the game. Peterson returned the INT 27 yards, setting up the Cardinals first TD of the game on the ensuing play. Arizona s second takeaway of the game occurred on the next Green Bay possession when LB John Abraham the NFL s active career leader in both sacks (122.0) and forced fumbles (44) took down Packers QB Graham Harrell on 3 rd -n-6 and forced a fumble that was recovered by LB Sam Acho. Arizona s four QBs (Palmer, Stanton, Ryan Lindley and Caleb TerBush) combined to complete 16 of 27 pass attempts for 270 yards, two TDs, 0 INTs and a passer rating of SHOUTOUT TO THE LINE The Cardinals solid play at QB was made possible by the protection offered by a revamped offensive line, a point Carson Palmer emphasized following the game. I thought the first and second group did a phenomenal job. I know when I was in I didn t have anyone around me at all and Drew (Stanton) had a lot of time when he was back there too. YARDS BY THE BUNCH The Cardinals offense piled up 355 total yards in Green Bay, with many of those yard coming on big plays in the passing game. Arizona s passing attack totaled four plays of 25+ yards in game, including a 38-yard TD pass from Palmer to Roberts. Arizona s top three QBs (Palmer, Stanton and Lindley) all had pass plays that covered at least 30 yards. In all, the QBs totaled 10 plays that covered at least 17 yards. MATHIEU DOES IT ALL During his college career, Cardinals S Tyrann Mathieu the team s 3 rd round pick (69 th overall) in 2013 was known as a playmaker both on special teams and defense. In his preseason debut, Mathieu put those skills on display, finishing the game with two tackles, a 12-yard sack, a tackle for loss, a pass defensed, two special teams tackles and a 24-yard punt return. He was all over the field, head coach Bruce Arians said of Mathieu s debut. That s the way he s been practicing every day. FANS FLOCKING TO GLENDALE For the first time ever, the Cardinals are conducting training camp at University of Phoenix Stadium in 2013 and fans have turned out by the thousands in support. Team President Michael Bidwill made the announcement in June that 2013 Training Camp Presented by Hyundai would be held at the team s home stadium. First and foremost, training camp is a critically important activity from a football standpoint in terms of preparing for the season ahead, Bidwill said. Putting our team in the best possible environment to succeed is our number one focus. We also see it as very important from a fan engagement perspective and we are committed to making training camp as enjoyable an experience for fans as we can. The Cardinals held their annual Red & White scrimmage on Aug. 3 and a record 17,500 fans made the trip to University of Phoenix Stadium for the event. Over the first seven practices at the Stadium, nearly 60,000 fans came out to support the team. "That's what excites me about this venue for practice, is being able to have so many people in here, and it excites the players every day," head coach Bruce Arians said. "When you start getting tired, and all of a sudden you hear the noise, it does get the juices flowing. In all, 20 of the 32 NFL teams are holding their training camp this year at their training facility or home stadium. In 2000, just five of 31 teams (16%) held their training camp at home, compared to 62% in ENHANCHING PUBLIC SAFETY In order to provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fan entry into University of Phoenix Stadium, fans attending home games at University of Phoenix Stadium are reminded of the NFL policy limiting the size and type of bags that may be brought into the stadium. The NFL Committee on Stadium Security in May unanimously recommended the implementation of this measure that will enhance public safety and make it easier for fans to gain access in all stadiums, beginning with this week s preseason matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The Cardinals strongly encourage fans to not bring any type of bags, but outlined today what is permissible. Fans will be able to carry the following style and size bag, package, or container at stadium plaza areas, stadium gates, or when approaching queue lines of fans awaiting entry into the stadium: Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl or PVC and do not exceed 12 x 6 x 12. Cardinals season-ticket members will be sent compliant bags in early August. One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar). The team will have these bags available at University of Phoenix Stadium gates on game day. Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand, with or without a handle or strap, may be carried into the stadium along with one of the clear bag options. An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate designated for this purpose. Prohibited items include, but are not limited to: purses larger than a clutch bag, coolers, briefcases, backpacks, fanny packs, cinch bags, luggage of any kind, seat cushions, computer bags and camera bags. 6 KEIM TAKES THE REINS In January, Steve Keim was named the Cardinals new General Manager. Earning the promotion the age of 40, Keim became one of the youngest GMs in the NFL. General Manager Team Age Birthdate Howie Roseman Philadelphia 38 June 23, 1975 David Caldwell Jacksonville 39 February 14, 1974 Tom Telesco Indianapolis 40 December 12, 1972 Doug Whaley Buffalo 40 September 23, 1972 Steve Keim Arizona 40 September 8, 1972 Ryan Grigson Indianapolis 41 February 23, 1972 The 2013 season will be Keim s 15 th with the Cardinals organization, having originally joined the club in 1999 as a college scout covering the eastern portion of the country. He was promoted to Director of College Scouting in 2006, Director of Player Personnel in 2008 and was then promoted to Vice President, Player Personnel in May, As part of the Cardinals personnel department, Keim played an integral part in the drafting of Pro Bowlers Patrick Peterson, Larry Fitzgerald and Darnell Dockett. In his first draft as GM, Keim selected highly touted G Jonathan Cooper, in addition to college standouts LB Kevin Minter and S Tyrann Mathieu. Steve has earned this position, Cardinals President Michael Bidwill said when announcing Keim s promotion. As I went through the process of evaluating the field of candidates and speaking to people, both inside our training facility and outside, I became more and more convinced that Steve Keim was the right man to be the general manager for the Arizona Cardinals. A Pennsylvania native, Keim was a two-time all-acc selection at guard at N.C. State before going on to a brief stint in professional football as a free agent with the Miami Dolphins (1996) and Edmonton Eskimos (1997) of the Canadian Football League. UNPRECEDENTED SUCCESS IN INDY The Indianapolis Colts posted a 2-14 record in 2011, featuring an offense that ranked 30 th overall in the NFL. In one season under Bruce Arians, the Colts offense which was stacked with rookies, including eventual Pro Bowl QB Andrew Luck finished the year ranked 10 th overall and Indy returned to the postseason after posting an 11-5 record Colts Notes Was named both Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly & the Pro Football Writers of America. He became the first individual to win both awards in the same year. Took over as interim coach on October 1, 2012 when head coach Chuck Pagano left the team to undergo treatment for leukemia. Led the Colts to a 9-3 record in his 12 games and helped Indianapolis clinch a playoff berth while tying the NFL record for most wins ever by an interim coach. Arians and Pagano shared Coach of the Year honors from the Maxwell Club in Philadelphia and were named AFC Coach of the Year by NFL 101 in Kansas City. Indy s nine-win improvement from 2011 (2-14 to 11-5) matched the third-largest single-season turnaround in NFL history. Rookie QB Andrew Luck, a 2012 Pro Bowl selection, threw for the most passing yards (4,374) by a rookie in NFL history. Luck had an NFL rookie record six 300-yard passing games and led the Colts on seven game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or OT, the most by a rookie QB since the 1970 merger. 8 REMARKABLE RECOVERY That Cardinals quarterback coach Freddie Kitchens was with the team when it reported to training camp on July 25 th was remarkable considering the scare he endured just 50 days prior. At an OTA practice on June 4 th, Kitchens began to feel ill. QBs Drew Stanton and Carson Palmer sensed that something was wrong and called over the team s head trainer Tom Reed. Anyone who knows Freddie s personality, he s jovial and easy-going, Stanton said. He was joking around asking if a heart attack is on the left or right side, going for the chuckle, and then said Actually, it s kind of in the middle here. I told him, Freddie, that sounds kind of serious, and Carson (Palmer) said Yeah Freddie, you don t look so good, you re kind of flush. He tried to say he was OK, but we called Tom (Reed) over and he was monitoring him. The trainers arranged for Kitchens to be taken to the hospital for tests and during that process, a CT scan revealed tears in his aorta that required surgery, which he had that same night after being flown to the Arizona Heart Hospital. "We never even talked about how soon I would be back," Kitchens said after the team reported to camp. "It's really the same way you do it in the football. You just do the best you can every day and you see where you're at in the end. It just so happened I was well enough to back to work. "I'm not completely healed and my doctor makes me fully aware of that every day, but I'm to the point where I can go back to work." RECORD HOLDER RETURNS The running backs on the Arizona roster have a lot of work to do to live up to the legacy left by their position coach, Stump Mitchell, while he played with the Cardinals. A standout RB and return specialist for nine seasons with the Cards from , Mitchell enters his first season as RBs coach with the Cardinals and 12 th season as an NFL assistant. A ninth round selection (226 th overall) by the Cardinals in the 1981 NFL Draft, Mitchell spent his entire nine-year NFL career with the Cards. He currently holds the franchise record with 11,988 all-purpose yards and ranks second all-time in rushing yards (4,649), punt return yards (1,377) and kickoff return yards (4,007), while also adding 1,955 career receiving yards. Mitchell finished his career having posted a 4.7-yard average, which ranks as the second-highest career mark in team history. He posted a 5.6-yard rushing average in 1981, earning All-Rookie honors from Pro Football Weekly, who also awarded him All-NFC honors as a kickoff returner in NEW COORDINATORS Under head coach Bruce Arians, the Cardinals enter the 2013 season with new coordinators on offense, defense and special teams.
