Game time is 8:00 p.m. at the Hartford Civic Center in Hartford, CT. The Huskies enter the game with a 1-0 record and come off an win over Vanderbilt on November 19. The Wildcats are 0-3 following a home loss to Dartmouth on November 24. UNH lost its opener at Notre Dame, 95-53, on November 16 and dropped an decision at Boston College on November 21. The game will be televised by WTXX-20 in Connecticut and can also be heard live on the WTIC/ Radio Network. HITTING head coach Jim Calhoun earned his 600th career coaching win against Vanderbilt on November 19. He is the 26th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 600 victory plateau and is part of an elite group of 11 active Division I coaches who have reached the 600 win mark. SERIES HISRY & NOTES-- and New Hampshire will meet for the 113th time in the series history, with the Huskies holding an advantage... Coach Calhoun is 20-6 vs. UNH, 2-0 at and 18-6 at Northeastern... is the third BIG EAST opponent for UNH this season. SCOUTING THE HUSKIES-- opened the season with an win over Vanderbilt. Sophomore All-American candidate Caron Butler led the Husky scorers with 23 points and added six rebounds, six steals and three assists. Junior guard Tony Robertson had 16 points, senior forward Johnnie Selvie had 15 and freshman center Emeka Okafor had 11 points and 12 rebounds in his first career contest. Sophomore point guard Taliek Brown had a near triple-double, scoring nine points, grabbing eight rebounds and handing out 11 assists. Freshman guard Ben Gordon had eight points and five rebounds off the bench in 20 minutes. 2 HEAD COACH JIM CALHOUN-- Jim Calhoun (American International 68) is in his 16 th season in charge of the Connecticut basketball program. In his 30 th season as a collegiate head coach, Jim Calhoun has an overall career record of (68.3%), having spent 14 seasons as the head coach at Northeastern University before taking over at Connecticut in Calhoun sports a (71.1%) record at and he registered a (64.6%) mark at Northeastern. He is the only basketball coach in NCAA Division I history to have recorded at least 250 wins at two different schools. Jim Calhoun is the winningest coach in both and Northeastern basketball history. VANDERBILT RECAP-- opened the season with an impressive performance in beating Vanderbilt, The win was the 600th for head coach Jim Calhoun. The Huskies scored the first 13 points of the game and led by as many as 26 points in the early minutes of the second half. Vanderbilt went on a 22-6 run to cut the lead to ten points with 12:40 to play, but never got the lead to single digits and the Huskies got the lead back up to 20 in the late stages. HAS 74-GAME WINNING STREAK VS. NON-BIG EAST NE FOES-- enters the game with UNH with an impressive streak on the line. The Huskies have won 74 consecutive games against non-big EAST Conference New England college rivals. The streak dates back 15 seasons to head coach Jim Calhoun s first year at Connecticut, the season. Jim Calhoun s overall record against non-big EAST New England schools in his 15 years at is 78-3 (all three losses in his first season in ). The last Connecticut loss to a non-big EAST New England opponent took place on December 29, 1986 (49-48 to Hartford in the Connecticut Mutual Classic). A FIRST FOR EMEKA-- Freshman center Emeka Okafor recorded a doubledouble in the opener against Vanderbilt, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. He is the first player to record a double-double in his Husky debut since Rod Sellers had 13 points and 12 rebounds against Hartford on 11/26/88. Corny Thompson is the other Husky on record to debut with a double-double, scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 rebounds vs. LIU on 11/24/78. EXPERIENCE FACR-- For the second time in five seasons, will enter a season with no player on the roster having more than two years of playing experience. The Huskies had three scholarship players with two years of playing time (Ricky Moore, Rashamel Jones and Antric Klaiber). That team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before losing to North Carolina in Greensboro. The Huskies have two players with two years of playing time (Tony Robertson and Justin Brown). EXPERIENCE FACR, PART 2-- What may lack in experience on the court, it more than makes up for on the bench. The Huskies may be the only team in the country to boast a coaching staff with all four individuals having head coaching experience on the collegiate level (Div. I, II or III). Head Coach Jim Calhoun is in his 30th season as a collegiate head coach. Associate Head Coach Dave Leitao (14th season at ) spent two seasons as the head coach at Northeastern University. Assistant coach Tom Moore (8th season at ) was the head coach at Division III Worcester State for five seasons. The newest member of the coaching staff, George Blaney, brings 30 years as a collegiate head coach to the Husky bench. Coach Blaney spent two years at Stonehill, three seasons at Dartmouth, 22 seasons at Holy Cross and three seasons at Seton Hall. INJURY UPDATE-- Junior center Justin Brown will miss the opener vs. Vanderbilt with mononucleosis, diagnosed before the exhibition game on November 13. Brown has been cleared by the medical staff for light physical activity and has returned to practice. He should be available for the New Hampshire game on November 26. LOOKING FOR 73 IN A ROW-- has won 72 straight home games during the months of November and December over the course of the last 12 seasons. Since that loss, Connecticut has gone unbeaten in November and December in home games in Hartford and Storrs. That mark does not include three neutral court wins over UMass in the Hartford Civic Center. BUTLER ON SHORT LIST-- Sophomore Caron Butler is on many expert s short list for National Player of the Year and All- American honors. He is among the preseason candidates for the Wooden Player of the Year Award and the Naismith Player of the Year Award. Butler was a Street & Smith s Pre-Season All-American pick and was a First Team All-BIG EAST pre-season selection. Butler was among the players receiving votes for the preseason Associated Press All-American team. BUTLER WITH THE USA-- Sophomore Caron Butler spent his summer as a key member of the United States team at the World Championship For Young Men Tournament in Japan. Caron started all eight games for the Gold Medal winning and unbeaten USA squad, averaging 10.6 points and adding 4.3 rebounds. He shot 51.5% from the field and added 19 assists and 11 steals. He led the team in scoring in two games and had 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in the gold medal victory over Croatia. IN THE NATIONAL POLLS-- was among the teams receiving votes in both major national pre-season polls and remains that way in both entering the Vanderbilt game. The Huskies were listed in the pre-season Top 25 for several national publications and prognosticators. Blue Ribbon had the Huskies 12th, Dick Vitale had 22nd and ESPN.com listed Connecticut as the 23rd ranked team in the pre-season rankings. THE BIG EAST POLLS-- was selected to finish second in the East Division, according to a vote of the league s head coaches. BC was the pick to win the East, followed by, Miami, Providence, St. John s, Villanova and Virginia Tech. In the West, Georgetown led the way, followed by Syracuse, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. THE HUSKIES IN HARTFORD-- will play in the Hartford Civic Center for the 217th time in the game vs. UNH, including exhibition games. The Huskies have rolled up a mark vs. collegiate opposition, including exhibitions. has gone unbeaten at the HCC four times and has had five seasons with only one HCC loss. The Huskies topped the three million mark in attendance in Hartford during the season. The total attendance for HCC games is 3,074,498, an average of 14,234 per date, including 92 sellouts. NIKE ELITE RECAP-- Sophomore All-American candidate Caron Butler (Racine, WI) scored 17 of his game-high 26 points in the first half to lead the University of Connecticut to a exhibition win over Nike Elite on Tuesday, November 6. Connecticut blew the game open in the first 3:43 of the second half with a 14-0 run, keyed by Johnnie Selvie's (Sr., Flint, MI) nine points. Selvie finished with 23 points on eight of 10 shooting from the field. Butler also finished with a game-high 10 rebounds to lead a advantage in the department. Freshman Emeka Okafor (Houston, Texas) came off the bench to score 10 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Sophomore Taliek Brown (Queens, NY) had eight points and dished out a game-high 10 assists, while Tony Robertson (Jr., East Providence, RI) added nine points. ANDERSON SIGNS WITH -- signed Rashad Anderson, a 6-4, G/F, from Lakeland, FL and Kathleen HS to a National Letter of Intent. Anderson averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists as a junior and led his team to the Florida State Championship. Head Coach Jim Calhoun says about Anderson, Rashad is a versatile player who will make an immediate offensive impact on our team. As we viewed other kids during the recruiting process, it was clear that Rashad is one of the top offensive players in this senior class. We look forward to him bringing his skills and winning attitude to Connecticut and think that he has the potential to become the next outstanding wing player in the Basketball program. Rashad comes from a highly successful and well-respected state championship high school program and has learned under the tutelage of a tremendous coach in Drew Taylor. We know he will be a terrific addition to our basketball family. BROWN SIGNS WITH -- signed Denham Brown, a 6-5, F from Toronto, Canada and West Hill Collegiate to a National Letter of Intent. Brown averaged 30 points and six rebounds per game as a junior at Bathurst Heights HS in Toronto, leading the squad to the semifinals of the provincial championships. He transferred to West Hill Collegiate for his senior season after Bathurst Heights closed. Head Coach Jim Calhoun says about Brown, Denham is one of the top wing/ forwards in the class. He had an outstanding summer, establishing himself as the premier junior player in Canada. He is a great talent who will be joining the Canadian National Team in the near future. Denham has a big, strong body and is a good shooter. He is an intelligent player with strong fundamentals and will be a tremendous addition to our basketball program. NEW THE STAFF-- New to the Basketball staff is Director of Men s Basketball Operations Andre LaFleur. LaFleur is a graduate of Northeastern University where he was one of the nation s premier point guards. A native of Los Angeles and a product of Governor Dummer Academy in South Byfield, Mass., he was a prime recruit for then-northeastern head coach Jim Calhoun in a class that included Wes Fuller and Reggie Lewis. From the season through LaFleur s senior year of , the team boasted a conference record of 60-6 and an overall record of LaFleur scored 1143 career points, graduating as the 10th all-time leading scorer in NU history and he is a member of the Northeastern Hall of Fame. He registered 89 steals as a senior and 252 for his career, both still Northeastern records. His total of 894 career assists set a new NCAA record in 1988 and he still ranks 11th in NCAA history. As a junior and senior, LaFleur was named All- Conference, while serving as a tri-captain with Fuller and Lewis. LaFleur was a fifth-round draft pick of the Houston Rockets in 1987 and lasted until the team s final cut of the preseason. He then played for two years in the CBA before traveling to Australia where he played professionally for 11 seasons. After completing his professional career, Andre took a position as School Sports Coordinator for the Sydney City Basketball Association. Andre has a son, Adrian, age 6, who lives in Sydney Australia.
