He made three of four field goal attempts, and was successful on nine of 12 free throw tries. Freshman center Hasheem Thabeet continued to impose his will at both ends of the court. 5 New Display Program Announced for Gampel Pavilion That Will Include "Huskies Of Honor" Individual Recognition The University of Connecticut Division of Athletics will institute a new display program in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion during the academic year, which will recognize both outstanding teams and individuals from the men s and women s basketball programs. This new display enhancement program will replace the existing banners that currently hang in Gampel Pavilion and have been in place since the early 1990s. The remarkable on-going success of UConn men s and women s basketball, combined with our desire to launch a Huskies of Honor program, has created an immediate need to develop a new and enhanced method to display all of the achievements of Husky Basketball, says Connecticut Director of Athletics Jeff Hathaway. Instituting a Huskies of Honor program has been an important priority for Coach Auriemma, Coach Calhoun and myself since I returned to UConn in With the implementation of this new display program, the additional space for the Huskies of Honor is now available. We are running out of banner locations with our current team recognition system and presently there is no space available in Gampel Pavilion to honor the men and women who have helped create the phenomenal success that is Connecticut Basketball. The new display systems that will be installed this season will ensure the capability to annually update and honor anticipated team successes well into the future while also creating much-needed wall space to allow us to begin honoring men and women who have left their individual marks on the Connecticut Basketball programs. Team accomplishments of the UConn men s basketball program will be displayed at the West end of Gampel Pavilion while the team accomplishments of the Husky women s basketball program will be showcased at the East end. A total of 14 grid panels will be installed within Gampel Pavilion, each accommodating a maximum of 21 year-by-year achievements of the UConn men s and women s programs. Each grid panel measures 21 feet long by 10 feet high and is an engineered aluminum system with metal rails to allow for annual updating of specific team accomplishments. Team accomplishments to be recognized on these 14 grid panels are BIG EAST regular season titles, BIG EAST tournament championships, NCAA Championship appearances, NCAA Sweet 16 appearances, NCAA Elite Eight appearances, and NCAA Final Four appearances for the men s and women s programs -- and National Invitation Tournament appearances by the men s team. UConn s seven national championship teams will continue to be recognized with the men s achievements on the North wall and the women s achievements on the South wall. These displays will each measure eight feet by 10 feet and will include specific NCAA Final Four logos for each of the seven national championships. A new addition to the North wall will be a display recognizing the 1988 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship. There will also be Hall of Fame displays honoring men s coach Jim Calhoun and women s coach Geno Auriemma. Jim Calhoun s display recognizing his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame was unveiled during the season. Two displays recognizing Geno Auriemma s induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and his induction in the Women s Basketball Hall of Fame will be unveiled in pre-game ceremonies on November 30 when UConn hosts Purdue in a nationally-televised game on espn2. In addition to the team recognition panels and the national championship and Hall of Fame recognition panels, beginning this season the Division of Athletics will launch a Huskies of Honor program, paying tribute to the top players and coaches in UConn men s and women s basketball history. The Huskies of Honor recognition program will be featured on the East and West walls of Gampel Pavilion to the left and right of the two scoreboards. Individual panels, each measuring four foot by five foot, will include the name, uniform number and years of competition for Husky greats. The honor will not retire that jersey number, allowing for future use of the numbers by the UConn men s and women s basketball programs. In addition to the individual panels for the Huskies of Honor, each honoree will also have a plaque created on wall space near the entrance doors to Gampel Pavilion that will include an action photo and summarize in text the top career achievements for each honoree. A committee within the UConn Division of Athletics will work with both basketball coaching staffs in selecting the annual honorees for the UConn Basketball Huskies of Honor program. We are planning a season-long celebration of our basketball heritage in as we introduce this state-of-the-art visual identity program, says Hathaway. We plan to recognize our inaugural class of Huskies of Honor at two separate ceremonies this coming season during men s and women s home games in Gampel Pavilion. The current banner system in Gampel Pavilion includes 80 banners that represent UConn s team successes in BIG EAST, NCAA and NIT history. Without a change, the system could accommodate only 17 more banners and there is an average of six new banners each year. The current system includes 32 banners that hang from duct work in Gampel Pavilion. The new system, when launched this year, will immediately honor 153 UConn team accomplishments and can expand to a total of 294 yearby-year team accomplishments. The new enhancement program will not have any displays hanging from duct work and creates needed new space to begin the Huskies of Honor individual recognitions. We have had remarkable success in the sports of men s and women s basketball that rivals any school in the nation, says Hathaway. We are very proud of the history of Connecticut Basketball and this new display program will allow us to showcase all of that success to our fans. We also have to plan for the future and part of that future is continued success and our ability to effectively update annual achievements and honors. The Gampel Pavilion enhancement program is being coordinated by Harrison Jenkins Design of Bloomfield, Connecticut University of Connecticut Basketball Media Notes NOVEMBER 10, 2006 vs. UConnHuskies.com
