Sophomore All-American candidate Caron Butler leads the attack at.1 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.8 assists. Junior guard Tony Robertson is at 13.6 points per game and also adds 2.5 assists. Freshman Ben Gordon is third on the team at 13.3 points per game. Senior forward Johnnie Selvie is fourth on the squad at 13.1 points per game and is also grabbing 6.4 rebounds. Freshman center Emeka Okafor is scoring 9.3 points and averages a team-high 9.3 rebounds per contest and 4.1 blocks per game. Rounding out the top six is sophomore point guard Taliek Brown, who is averaging 7.4 points and 5.1 assists. He also grabs 3.3 rebounds per game. 2 HEAD COACH JIM CALHOUN-- Jim Calhoun (American International 68) is in his 16 th season in charge of the Connecticut basketball program. In his 30 th season as a collegiate head coach, Jim Calhoun has an overall career record of (68.4%), having spent 14 seasons as the head coach at Northeastern University before taking over at Connecticut in Calhoun sports a (71.3%) record at and he registered a (64.6%) mark at Northeastern. He is the only basketball coach in NCAA Division I history to have recorded at least 250 wins at two different schools. Jim Calhoun is the winningest coach in both and Northeastern basketball history. Coach Calhoun earned his 600th career coaching win against Vanderbilt on November 19. He is the 26th coach in NCAA Division I history to reach the 600 victory plateau and is part of an elite group of 11 active Division I coaches who have reached the 600 win mark. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK-- Freshman center Emeka Okafor was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on December 23 for his -point, 14-rebound, fourblock performance in the win over Quinnipiac. The point and block totals were career-highs for the 6-9, 240 lb. rookie. He is s second league rookie winner this season. Ben Gordon was the honoree on December 3. CHECKING THE BIG EAST STATS-- has several individuals among the BIG EAST leaders in this week s statistics. Through games of December 22, freshman Emeka Okafor leads the league in blocked shots at 4.14 per game. Okafor is also third in the BIG EAST in rebounding at 9.3 per game. Junior Tony Robertson is fourth in the league in free throw shooting percentage (90.0%). Sophomore Caron Butler is eighth in steals (2.6), ninth in free throw percentage (82.8%) and th in scoring (.1 ppg). Senior Johnnie Selvie is seventh in field goal percentage (54.3%). Freshman Ben Gordon is third in three-point shooting percentage (48.3%). AND THE NBA-- has seven former players on current NBA rosters. They are: Ray Allen (Milwaukee Bucks), Richard Hamilton (Washington Wizards), Travis Knight (New York Knicks), Donyell Marshall (Utah Jazz), Kevin Ollie (Chicago Bulls), Clifford Robinson (Detroit Pistons) and Jake Voskuhl (Phoenix Suns). STAT SHEET FILLER-- Sophomore Caron Butler has continued his solid allaround play through seven games of his sophomore season. Butler leads the Huskies in scoring and steals. He is second in minutes, assists and rebounds. He is third in free throw shooting percentage. Entering the St. Bonaventure game, Butler is averaging.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.6 steals in 31.1 minutes per game. BEN OFF THE BENCH-- Freshman Ben Gordon has made his mark in the first seven games of his collegiate career. Gordon is third on the squad in scoring at 13.3 points per game and has hit double figures in five games. Gordon was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week on December 3 and had 19 points in the win over GW on the heels of leading the squad with 23 points in the win over UNH. AN IMPRESSIVE DEBUT-- Emeka Okafor has been impressive in the early going for the Huskies. Okafor has started the first seven games at center, averaging 9.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.1 blocks. He comes off an -point, 14-rebound, four-block night in the win over Quinnipiac, his third double-double of the season. Emeka had a career-best eight blocked shots in the win over Northeastern and followed that up with six blocks against UMass. He also had 13 points and 11 boards vs. UMass. Okafor recorded a double-double in the opener against Vanderbilt, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. OUT OF THE BLOCKS QUICKLY-- Emeka Okafor is well on his way to making his mark in the Husky record books for blocked shots. Through seven games, Okafor has 29 blocked shots, 4.14 per game. The Husky record for blocked shots in a season is 111 by Donyell Marshall, an average of 3.26 per game, in FINALLY A STARTER-- Junior guard Tony Robertson is a part of the Husky starting line-up for the first time in his three seasons at Connecticut. Robertson played in 65 games and a total of 1260 minutes in his first two seasons before making a start. His stretch as a reserve is second on record in history in both minutes and games. Former Husky John Gwynn played in 82 games and a total of 1,347 minutes at before making a start. It was the only start of Gwynn s career. Robertson has started all seven games in and is averaging 13.6 points in six games. He is shooting 55.2% from the field and 46.4% from three-point range. 75 IN A ROW AT HOME-- has won 75 straight home games during the months of November and December over the course of the last 12 seasons. On December 12, 1989 the Huskies dropped a decision to Villanova at the Hartford Civic Center. Since that loss, Connecticut has gone unbeaten in November and December in home games in Hartford and Storrs. That mark does not include three neutral court wins over UMass in the Hartford Civic Center. THE HUSKIES IN HARTFORD-- will play in the Hartford Civic Center for the 219th time in the game vs. St. Bonaventure, including exhibition games. The Huskies have rolled up a mark vs. collegiate opposition, including exhibitions. has gone unbeaten at the HCC four times and has had five seasons with only one HCC loss. 4 having more than two years of playing experience. The Huskies had three scholarship players with two years of playing time (Ricky Moore, Rashamel Jones and Antric Klaiber). That team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight before losing to North Carolina in Greensboro. The Huskies have two players with two previous years of playing time (Tony Robertson and Justin Brown). EXPERIENCE FACR, PART 2-- What may lack in experience on the court, it more than makes up for on the bench. The Huskies may be the only team in the country to boast a coaching staff with all four individuals having head coaching experience on the collegiate level (Div. I, II or III). Head Coach Jim Calhoun is in his 30th season as a collegiate head coach. Associate Head Coach Dave Leitao (14th season at ) spent two seasons as the head coach at Northeastern University. Assistant coach Tom Moore (8th season at ) was the head coach at Division III Worcester State for five seasons. The newest member of the coaching staff, George Blaney, brings 30 years as a collegiate head coach to the Husky bench. Coach Blaney spent two years at Stonehill, three seasons at Dartmouth, 22 seasons at Holy Cross and three seasons at Seton Hall. BUTLER ON SHORT LIST-- Sophomore Caron Butler is on many expert s short list for National Player of the Year and All- American honors. He is among the pre-season candidates for the Wooden Player of the Year Award and the Naismith Player of the Year Award. Butler was a Street & Smith s Pre-Season All-American pick and was a First Team All-BIG EAST preseason selection. Butler was among the players receiving votes for the pre-season Associated Press All-American team. BUTLER WITH THE USA-- Sophomore Caron Butler spent his summer as a key member of the United States team at the World Championship For Young Men Tournament in Japan. Caron started all eight games for the Gold Medal winning and unbeaten USA squad, averaging.6 points and adding 4.3 rebounds. He shot 51.5% from the field and added 19 assists and 11 steals. He led the team in scoring in two games and had 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in the gold medal victory over Croatia. IN THE NATIONAL POLLS-- was among the teams receiving votes in both major national pre-season polls and remains that way in both entering this game. The Huskies were listed in the pre-season Top 25 for several national publications and prognosticators. Blue Ribbon had the Huskies 12th, Dick Vitale had 22nd and ESPN.com listed Connecticut as the 23rd ranked team in the pre-season rankings. THE BIG EAST POLLS-- was selected to finish second in the East Division, according to a vote of the league s head coaches. BC was the pick to win the East, followed by, Miami, Providence, St. John s, Villanova and Virginia Tech. In the West, Georgetown led the way, followed by Syracuse, Notre Dame, Seton Hall, West Virginia, Pittsburgh and Rutgers. UMASS RECAP-- Before heading into finals week, faced a tough road test against the Minutemen of UMass. The Huskies jumped out early, taking a 13-point lead in the first seven minutesand held a 13-point lead at the intermission on the strength of 12 first half points by Tony Robertson. UMass scored the first six points of the second half and closed to four points at with 12:07 left. responded with an 11-5 burst, during which Emeka Okafor scored five points, to get the lead back to ten at with 7:00 left. Caron Butler (13 points) and Robertson (15 points) each made big buckets down the stretch and made seven-of-eight free throws in the final minute to cement the win. Okafor finished the night with 13 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots. NORTHEASTERN RECAP-- Caron Butler led all scorers with 19 points and Emeka Okafor led a strong defensive effort with eight blocked shots as routed Northeastern, held NU to 22.9% shooting in the second half, extending a -point halftime lead to as many as a 40-point bulge i nthe second stanza. MARYLAND RECAP-- A slow start to both the first and second halves proved to be too much to overcome for in dropping a decision to No. 2 Maryland in the championship game of the BB&T Classic at MCI Center in Washington, DC. The Terps outscored 21-7 to start the game, but the Huskies roared back with a 13-0 run and trailed only at the half. Maryland bolted out of the gates in the second half with a 16-4 run and was only able to get as close as seven the rest of the way. Caron Bulter led the Huskies with 20 points and was named to the all-tournament team. Freshman Emeka Okafor had eight points and 12 rebounds. GEORGE WASHINGN RECAP-- Johnnie Selvie scored 16 of his 20 points in the first half and overcame foul trouble to several starters en route to an win over George Washington. The Huskies led by as many as points in the contest and held off a late Colonial rally. GW got as close as eight points late in the second half. Ben Gordon scored 19 points off the bench, hitting four three-pointers. Caron Butler had 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds. NEW HAMPSHIRE RECAP-- used a 12-0 run to end the first half and a 23-7 burst to start the second half en route to a 1-58 pasting of New Hampshire. Freshman Ben Gordon scored 23 points to lead the Husky attack and completely shut down Austin Ganly, UNH s leading scorer who was 24 points per game coming in and had scored 29 against the Huskies a year ago. rolled up a advantage on points in the paint and outscored the Wildcats in the second half. Junior Tony Robertson added 19 points for. Marcus Bullock had 20 points for UNH, all in the first half, making six-of-seven three s in the first half. Bullock did not attempt a shot in the second half. VANDERBILT RECAP-- opened the season with an impressive performance in beating Vanderbilt, The win was the 600th for head coach Jim Calhoun. The Huskies scored the first 13 points of the game and led by as many as 26 points in the early minutes of the second half. Vanderbilt went on a 22-6 run to cut the lead to ten points with 12:40 to play, but never got the lead to single digits and the Huskies got the lead back up to 20 in the late stages. Caron Butler had 23 points and tied his career-high with six steals, five of which came in the first half. Tony Robertson led the way by scoring all of his 13 points in the first half and four assists. Selvie added 12 in the opening stanza. Joining Selvie and Robertson in double figures for were Ben Gordon and Scott Hazelton who each had 15 points. The Huskies played without starters Justin Brown, out with mononucleosis, and Taliek Brown, who was attending a funeral. NIKE ELITE RECAP-- Sophomore All-American candidate Caron Butler scored of his game-high 26 points in the first half to lead the University of Connecticut to a 5-77 exhibition win over Nike Elite on Tuesday, November 6. Connecticut blew the game open in the first 3:43 of the second half with a 14-0 run, keyed by Johnnie Selvie's nine points. Selvie finished with 23 points on eight of shooting from the field. Butler also finished with a game-high rebounds to lead a advantage in the department. Freshman Emeka Okafor came off the bench to score points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Sophomore Taliek Brown had eight points and dished out a game-high assists, while Tony Robertson added nine points. ANDERSON SIGNS WITH -- signed Rashad Anderson, a 6-4, G/F, from Lakeland, FL and Kathleen HS to a National Letter of Intent. Anderson averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists as a junior and led his team to the Florida State Championship. Head Coach Jim Calhoun says about Anderson, Rashad is a versatile player who will make an immediate offensive impact on our team. As we viewed other kids during the recruiting process, it was clear that Rashad is one of the top offensive players in this senior class. We look forward to him bringing his skills and winning attitude to Connecticut and think that he has the potential to become the next outstanding wing player in the Basketball program. Rashad comes from a highly successful and well-respected state championship high school program and has learned under the tutelage of a tremendous coach in Drew Taylor. We know he will be a terrific addition to our basketball family. of 60-6 and an overall record of LaFleur scored 1143 career points, graduating as the th all-time leading scorer in NU history and he is a member of the Northeastern Hall of Fame. He registered 89 steals as a senior and 252 for his career, both still Northeastern records. His total of 894 career assists set a new NCAA record in 1988 and he still ranks 11th in NCAA history. As a junior and senior, LaFleur was named All- Conference, while serving as a tri-captain with Fuller and Lewis. LaFleur was a fifth-round draft pick of the Houston Rockets in 1987 and lasted until the team s final cut of the preseason. He then played for two years in the CBA before traveling to Australia where he played professionally for 11 seasons. After completing his professional career, Andre took a position as School Sports Coordinator for the Sydney City Basketball Association. Andre has a son, Adrian, age 6, who lives in Sydney Australia. The Huskies and Hokies tip-off at 7:00 p.m. BROWN SIGNS WITH -- signed Denham Brown, a 6-5, F from Toronto, Canada and West Hill Collegiate to a National Letter of Intent. Brown averaged 30 points and six rebounds per game as a junior at Bathurst Heights HS in Toronto, leading the squad to the semifinals of the provincial championships. He transferred to West Hill Collegiate for his senior season after Bathurst Heights closed. Head Coach Jim Calhoun says about Brown, Denham is one of the top wing/ forwards in the class. He had an outstanding summer, establishing himself as the premier junior player in Canada. He is a great talent who will be joining the Canadian National Team in the near future. Denham has a big, strong body and is a good shooter. He is an intelligent player with strong fundamentals and will be a tremendous addition to our basketball program. NEW THE STAFF-- New to the Basketball staff is Director of Men s Basketball Operations Andre LaFleur. LaFleur is a graduate of Northeastern University where he was one of the nation s premier point guards. A native of Los Angeles and a product of Governor Dummer Academy in South Byfield, Mass., he was a prime recruit for then-northeastern head coach Jim Calhoun in a class that included Wes Fuller and Reggie Lewis.
