5 18TH SEASON at UConn JIM CALHOUN YEAR-BY-YEAR 32nd Season Won 649, Lost th Season At Connecticut Won 401, Lost 159 Year Record 2-0 Postseason NIT * NIT NIT NIT NIT** *-- Champions **-- NIT Champions 14 Seasons At Northeastern Won 248, Lost 137 Year Record Postseason During the past 18 years, University of Connecticut head basketball coach Jim Calhoun has steadily built UConn basketball into one of the elite college programs in the nation. The move toward national prominence for the University of Connecticut basketball program began in May of 1986 when Jim Calhoun was named head coach. Eighteen years later, UConn Basketball sits atop the college basketball landscape with a National Championship and a regular spot in the top 25 collegiate polls. The Huskies have begun the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the nation and have two National Player of the Year candidates in juniors Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor. Coach Calhoun reached another milestone in the season opening win over Yale on November 17, notching his 400th career victory at UConn. In , Coach Calhoun faced the biggest challenge of his life and tackled it with the will and determination that college basketball followers have grown to expect from him and his program. On February 3, 2003, Jim Calhoun announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He took an immediate leave of absence from the team and underwent surgery on February 6 to have his prostate removed. He was released from the hospital on February 9 and within days was back in the office, involved in the many day-to-day aspects of running the program. On February 22, Jim Calhoun remarkably returned to the sidelines for the team s match-up with St. John s at Gampel Pavilion, only 13 days after successful surgery to eliminate his prostate cancer. The Huskies finished the season with a overall record, finishing 10-6 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies captured a share of the BIG EAST East Division title, the program s eighth BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in the past 14 seasons, and lost in the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament. UConn spent the first 14 weeks of the season ranked in the National Top 25, reaching as high as the No. 3 spot, and finished the year ranked No. 11 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 23 in the Associated Press rankings. UConn advanced to the Tournament for the 11th time under Coach Calhoun, making the program one of only five schools to advance to national postseason play for the last 16 straight seasons and the Huskies were in the Sweet 16 for the ninth time in 11 trips to the tourney under Coach Calhoun. In 32 seasons as a head coach on the Division I collegiate level, Jim Calhoun s overall collegiate head coaching record is (68.7% winning effort). That includes a (64.4%) record in 14 seasons as head coach at Northeastern (MA) University and a (71.6%) mark in his 18th season at Connecticut. In his 17 years at Connecticut, Jim Calhoun has compiled a stunning overall record in national postseason tournament competition (26-9 in play, 12-4 in NIT play). His 26 wins at UConn, all achieved in the past 14 years, far outdistances the entire total of four victories recorded at Connecticut before Coach Calhoun took over the Husky basketball program in the spring of In addition to directing Connecticut to the 1999 National Championship, Jim Calhoun has led UConn to 11 bids in the past 14 years. Under Coach Calhoun s direction, UConn has never lost a First Round game and are 20-2 in the First and Second Rounds. The Huskies have earned nine Sweet 16 berths in the past 14 years, and Connecticut advanced to the Elite Eight in 1990, 1995, 1998, 1999 and Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat have two sons, James and Jeffrey. James and his wife Jennifer reside in London, England with their daughters, Emily (born 3/5/99) and Katie (born 12/29/00) and son Samuel Patrick (born 6/8/03). Jeffrey and his wife Amy reside in Glastonbury, CT with their daughters Avery (born 1/26/02) and Reese (born 4/7/03). Gampel Pavilion. It was the season opener for both squads. With a win over Yale, head coach Jim Calhoun recorded his 400th coaching win at the University of Connecticut. He has a record in his 18th season at UConn. Yale was able to control the pace of the game in the opening twenty minutes, leading by as many as five before intermission, at 27-22, before settling for a halftime lead. UConn shot just 38 percent in the first twenty minutes. The Huskies seized control from the outset of the second half as senior point guard Taliek Brown (Queens, NY) and sophomore forward Denham Brown (Toronto, ON) scored back-to-back lay-ups to give UConn the lead at 32-31, and forcing Yale to call timeout. After the two teams traded hoops, freshman forward Josh Boone (Mt. Airy, MD) dunked off a fast brake pass from Taliek Brown to give the Huskies a lead they would never relinquish. The hoop started a 9-0 run that was capped by a thunderous slam by Okafor. The Huskies shot considerably better after intermission, hitting 10 of their first 14 shots from the field. They finished the game shooting 47% (26 of 55), including 8 of 17 from beyond the three-point arc. Junior guard Ben Gordon (Mt. Vernon, NY) and Denham Brown each hit three trifectas. Okafor scored 12 of his 21 points in the second half, and added four blocks. Denham Brown finished with 15, while Gordon chipped in with 13. Denham Brown s eight rebounds were one off of his careerhigh. Dominick Martin and Edwin Draughan each scored 14 for the Bulldogs.
