The move toward national prominence for the University of Connecticut basketball program began in May of 986 when Jim Calhoun was named head coach. Eighteen years later, UConn Basketball sits atop the college basketball landscape with a National Championship and a regular spot in the top 5 collegiate polls. The Huskies began the 3-4 season as the consensus No. team in the nation and have two National Player of the Year candidates in juniors Ben Gordon and Emeka Okafor. Coach Calhoun has reached a pair of milestones this season, notching his 65th career win vs. Sacred Heart and with the season opening win over Yale on November 7, notching his 4th career victory at UConn. In -3, Coach Calhoun faced the biggest challenge of his life and tackled it with the will and determination that college basketball followers have grown to expect from him and his program. On February 3, 3, Jim Calhoun announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He took an immediate leave of absence from the team and underwent surgery on February 6 to have his prostate removed. He was released from the hospital on February 9 and within days was back in the office, involved in the many day-to-day aspects of running the program. On February, Jim Calhoun remarkably returned to the sidelines for the team s match-up with St. John s at Gampel Pavilion, only 3 days after successful surgery to eliminate his prostate cancer. The -3 Huskies finished the season with a 3- overall record, finishing -6 in the BIG EAST. The Huskies captured a share of the BIG EAST East Division title, the program s eighth BIG EAST Regular Season Championship in the past 4 seasons, and lost in the championship game of the BIG EAST Tournament. UConn spent the first 4 weeks of the season ranked in the National Top 5, reaching as high as the No. 3 spot, and finished the year ranked No. in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the Associated Press rankings. UConn advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the th time under Coach Calhoun, making the program one of only five schools to advance to national postseason play for the last 6 straight seasons and the Huskies were in the NCAA Sweet 6 for the ninth time in trips to the tourney under Coach Calhoun. In 3 seasons as a head coach on the NCAA Division I collegiate level, Jim Calhoun s overall collegiate head coaching record is (68.8% winning effort). That includes a (64.4%) record in 4 seasons as head coach at Northeastern (MA) University and a 46-6 (7.7%) mark in his 8th season at Connecticut. In his first 7 seasons at Connecticut, Jim Calhoun has compiled a stunning 38-3 overall record in national postseason tournament competition (6-9 in NCAA play, -4 in NIT play). His 6 NCAA wins at UConn, all achieved in the past 4 years, far outdistances the entire total of four NCAA victories recorded at Connecticut before Coach Calhoun took over the Husky basketball program in the spring of 986. In addition to directing Connecticut to the 999 NCAA National Championship, Jim Calhoun has led UConn to NCAA bids in the past 4 years. Under Coach Calhoun s direction, UConn has never lost a NCAA First Round game and are - in the First and Second Rounds. The Huskies have earned nine NCAA Sweet 6 berths in the past 4 years, and Connecticut advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 99, 995, 998, 999 and. Jim Calhoun and his wife Pat have two sons, James and Jeffrey. James and his wife Jennifer reside in London, England with their daughters, Emily (born 3/5/99) and Katie (born /9/) and son Samuel Patrick (born 6/8/3). Marshall also blocked shots against Hartford on January 7, 994. Okafor's rebound and block totals were a season-high. Even with Okafor s heroics, the highlight of the game was the first action of Villanueva s Husky career. He entered the game with 4:3 to play in the opening half with UConn holding a 4- lead to a thunderous ovation led by the mostly studentfilled crowd. All tickets to the game were sold but the actual attendance was held down due to a snowstorm. It took Villanueva very little time to make an impact, registering his first basket within : and recording his first block just 3 seconds later. He finished the half with six points on two of four shooting. He finished the game with 6 points, five rebounds and three assists in a very impressive debut. UConn was in control from the outset, harassing the Black Knights into missing their first shots before a Joey Payton lay-up with :58 to play in the first half cut the Husky lead to 6-. UConn shot 5% (7 of 34) from the field in the opening minutes and pounded the Black Knights for points in the paint. Gampel Pavilion on Saturday evening. Quinnipiac actually stayed close to UConn in the early going, trailing just 9-4 with 9:35 to play in the first half. However, Gordon took over, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to ignite a 6- run and closed the half with three more consecutive baskets from beyond the arc as the Huskies ripped out to 46- halftime advantage. Gordon made seven three-pointers in the opening twenty minutes and finished the contest with eight, one shy of the school-record of nine set by Ray Allen against Rutgers on February 8, 996. Gordon s 8 points give him,7 in his career, moving into 3rd place on the all-time UConn scoring list, passing both Albert Mouring and Bill Corley. Gordon s offensive fireworks almost overshadowed the best game of Armstrong s career. Armstrong, who started for injured center Emeka Okafor, out with back spasms, set a career-high with his game-high rebounds and came within one of his career-best with points. He also blocked a game-high four shots. Okafor had previously started and played in all 74 games in his UConn career. Also setting a career mark for rebounds was sophomore forward Denham Brown, who snared. Senior point guard Taliek Brown had his most effective game of the young season.
