1 9 Preview Outlook Overview Media from coast to coast evaluating Clemson s prospects f the 9 season believe the Tigers are in a rebuilding mode. After all, few programs in the nation must replace their top receiver in histy, their #2 rusher, #2 passer in terms of efficiency, and #2 interception leader and turnover fcer. Head Coach Dabo Swinney begins his first full year as head coach looking f some answers at key skill-position areas on offense and in the secondary at the safety position on defense. Aaron Kelly, James Davis, Cullen Harper, and Michael Hamlin were all recdsetters in the last four years and were team leaders f a seni class that led Clemson to 32 wins and four bowl games. However, a closer look to the roster shows that Clemson does have some experienced players returning in key areas. While Clemson will not appear in many preseason top-25 polls, if any, the cupboard is not bare. Swinney welcomes back 53 lettermen, including 15 starters from last year s 7- team that closed the regular season with four wins in the last five games, earning a Gat Bowl bid. Among the returning lettermen, but not the returning starters, is C.J. Spiller. A candidate f the Heisman Trophy, the seni running back has come off the bench much of his career behind Davis, the only Tiger in histy to lead the team in rushing four consecutive years. Joining Spiller as a returning speed-demon on offense is wideout Jacoby Fd. The reigning National Champion in the 0m indos had 55 catches f 710 yards in 9 as the second option behind Kelly. He moves up to the #1 option in 9 and is certainly capable of a 1,000-yard season. Clemson s offensive line will return all five starters from last year and will be anched by graduate Thomas Austin, a versatile, strong, and quick player who has starting experience at both center and guard. Austin was Second-Team All-ACC last Seni wideout Jacoby Fd, an All-American in track, had 55 catches in. year who was a three-time pick as ACC Offensive Lineman-of-the-Week, me selections f the hon than any other ACC player. Spiller and Austin are both rated as the top draft prospects at their respective positions by analyst Mel Kiper. Swinney s defense returns eight starters, a strong stat f a unit that finished in the top 25 in the nation in scing defense, total defense, and pass defense in. While the Tigers must replace Hamlin and Chris Clemons, one of the most productive safety combinations in school histy, the Tigers have a strong defensive line, led by defensive ends Ricky Sapp and Da Quan Bowers, leading-tackler and linebacker Kavell Conner, and cnerbacks Crezdon Butler and Chris Chancell. DeAndre McDaniel has moved from linebacker to safety and will be among the top defenders in 9. Offense Clemson returns 2 lettermen and seven starters from an offense that averaged over 329 yards per game last year, 21 in the air and 111 on the ground. Clemson was in the top five in the ACC in scing offense, total offense, and passing offense last year and hopes to improve on those marks in Swinney s first full year as head coach. Billy Napier will serve as offensive codinat and quarterbacks coach. He is in his fourth year on the coaching staff, but his first as offensive codinat. At the age of 30, he will be the youngest codinat in school histy. Swinney will continue to run a spread offense, but the attack will feature me running plays f the quarterback. The leader under center will be the biggest question surrounding the program entering the season-opener against Middle Tennessee on September 5. Clemson is one of just two ACC schools (Boston College is the other) with both a new starting quarterback and new head coach in 9. The quarterback derby will be the talk of the August practices, said Swinney. But how we progress up front will be the key. We will have tremendous competition f the starting quarterback position. I have great confidence in all of our quarterbacks. They are talented players. Some people say if you have two quarterbacks, you don t have any. But I don t believe in that, because I know we have players who can get the job done. Willy Kn has the most experience among the quarterbacks. The sophome from Lyman, SC has played eight games (127 snaps) under center as Cullen Harper s backup over the last two years. Kn played two games as a first-year freshman in 7 then suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. He played six games in and made one start against Gegia Tech in Swinney s first game as head coach. But in that game, he was hit while attempting a pass and suffered a shoulder injury that limited his perfmance in the rest of the year. In his limited action, Kn has outstanding statistics with a career passing efficiency of thanks to passing (9.4 percent) f 31 yards and two touchdowns. He has also shown ability as a runner with two touchdowns on the ground. Kyle Parker is a second quarterback on the Tiger roster who was highly-rated coming out of high school. The red-shirt freshman is a native of Jacksonville, FL who was rated as the 34th-best player in the nation by.com. He helped his team Seni running back C.J. Spiller already owns 12 school recds, including career touchdowns of 50 yards me (12). to victy in the Under Armour All-America game in Orlando after his seni year. Parker sat out last year on the gridiron, but he was one of the top players on the Tiger baseball team in the spring of. He continued his fine play on the diamond in 9 when he hit 12 homers. F the second year in a row, he juggled spring football and baseball this past spring. Clemson s top player on offense and the team is Spiller. Few Heisman Trophy candidates came off the bench the previous year, but Spiller is a legitimate candidate as he moves into the center role of the Tiger offense f the first time. Our gameplan on offense will start with C.J. Spiller, said Swinney. He is perhaps the most exciting, versatile player in the nation. He had a great second half of, with the Boston College game being an example of his all-around capabilities. Spiller has gained a school-recd 4,90 all-purpose yards in three years thanks to his all-around abilities as a runner and receiver. In, he had 29 rushing yards and 43 receiving yards (1,05 yards from scrimmage). The receiving yards were second-most by a running back in Tiger histy. The Lake Butler, FL native already owns 12 school recds, including touchdowns of 50 yards me (12), six of which have been 0+ yards. While the Tigers have a running back capable of gaining 1,000 rushing yards, Swinney has a wideout capable of gaining 1,000 yards in terms of receiving. The Tigers have had just two previous years in its histy with a 1,000-yard receiver and running back in the same year (0,07). Fd is the top candidate to reach that 1,000yard mark among Tiger receivers in 9. Also a Sunshine State native, Fd joins Spiller as perhaps the nation s fastest receiver/running back combination. Both have been All-Americans f Clemson s track team in the last three years. Fd holds the ACC recd in the 0m (.51) and won the national indo title with a time of.52 in March. Fd had 55 catches f 710 yards and four sces last year when he was the second option behind Kelly, the top receiver in ACC histy. Spiller and Fd have strong suppt at their respective positions. Jamie Harper is the second

2 9 Preview Graduate offensive guard Thomas Austin was a three-time ACC Offensive Lineman-of-the-Week in. leading returning rusher with 133 yards on 34 carries. At pounds, the sophome gives Clemson the inside power it had the last four years with Davis. Andre Ellington is a red-shirt freshman running back who will also see action in 9. Fd is the only one of Clemson s top-three returning receivers. In addition to Kelly, four-year letterman Tyler Grisham also graduated with 132 career catches, 11th-most in school histy. Wideouts Xavier Dye, Marquan Jones, and Terrance Ashe are returning lettermen. Dye had six catches f 75 yards, Jones had three catches f 37 yards, and Ashe had three catches f 1 yards, but he had 10 catches in 7. Red-shirt freshmen Jaron Brown and Brandon Fd along with returning letterman Kyle Johnson will also be facts. Clemson will also use a strong cps of tight ends. Michael Palmer is the most experienced. The seni who has been a member of the All-ACC Academic team had 12 catches f 10 yards and three touchdowns in. In his career, he has 30 receptions f 31 yards and four touchdowns. He has started three bowl games as well. Durrell Barry is also a reliable tight end and red-shirt freshman Dwayne Allen was a national top-100 player accding to.com coming out of high school. Chad Diehl is a top blocker from the fullback position, while seni Rendrick Tayl is also back after a red-shirt year and will give the Tigers strength as a blocker and receiver. In, Clemson had to replace four starters on the offensive line. In years Clemson has had to replace four returning starters there since 193, Clemson has had a winning percentage of 54 percent. With Clemson in that situation in, the Tigers were 7- (53.9 winning percentage). In 9, Clemson returns five starters on the offensive line. Since 193, Clemson has had a winning percentage of 7 percent when it returns five starters on the offensive line. Swinney is optimistic that the Tigers will be able to improve significantly in terms of its ground game in 9. The bad news f us last year was that we had to replace four starters on the offensive line and had to play five freshmen who had never played befe, stated Swinney. We started three fresh men in a few games, something Clemson had not done since The good news this year is that we return five starters on the offensive line and all those young players are a year older and wiser. Leading the way on the offensive line is Outland Trophy candidate Thomas Austin. A starter as a center and guard during the last two years, Austin has led Clemson in knockdown blocks each of the last two seasons. A Second-Team All-ACC center last year, he was the first Clemson offensive lineman to be named ACC Offensive Lineman-of-theWeek three times in the same year since 199. Austin is slated to start at guard and Mason Cloy will start at center. Cloy was a first-team freshman All-American in when he had 5 knockdown blocks, second-most on the team. Cloy played 0 snaps and started all but one game. Redshirt freshman Dalton Freeman had an outstanding spring and will push Cloy f playing time. Sophome Antoine McClain was the mostimproved offensive lineman in the spring and will start at right guard. McClain was a highly-recruited player out of high school who played 149 snaps last year as a first-year freshman. He is ready to have an impact on the line in 9. Chris Hairston and Landon Walker are two returning starters at tackle. Hairston is an outstanding juni who played 11 games in, including 10 as a starter. He suffered two separate injuries that limited his play, but he had an 1-percent film grade f the year, second-best on the team. Walker started 10 games last year as a redshirt freshman. The son of a member of Clemson s 191 National Championship team had the thirdhighest average grade among offensive linemen from the coaches and totaled 72 snaps in. Walker, seni Cy Lambert, and freshman J.K. Jay are all in a competition to start at right tackle. Lambert started seven games at tackle and guard during. Jay is a first-year freshman who enrolled at Clemson in January, but he had an outstanding spring practice. Seni cnerback Crezdon Butler has 10 interceptions f 19 yards in his career. Defense Clemson has a new defensive codinat in Kevin Steele, who has served with distinction on staffs at Tennessee, Nebraska, Alabama, Flida State, and Carolina in the NFL. Clemson s defense was outstanding in many areas last year, finishing in the top 20 in the nation in scing defense, total defense, and pass defense. The pass defense was especially outstanding, leading to a #2 national finish in fewest yards per pass attempt allowed. The Tigers return Butler and Chancell, who have started together in the secondary f each of the last two years and 2 consecutive games. Both are legitimate Thpe Award candidates in 9. Butler has 10 career picks f 19 yards, tied f the most interceptions and most return yards among active ACC players. He had four interceptions f 142 yards last year, the third-most interception return yards in Tiger histy. His 19 career yards are third-most in Clemson histy. Chancell has actually started me games (30) in his career, including 2 in a row dating to the South Carolina game. The Miami, FL native has eight career picks, including four in. Clemson has a strong group of veteran reserves at cnerback. Juni Marcus Gilchrist saw a lot of time as a nickel back last year and will play behind Chancell. He had 21 tackles in 252 snaps and is also an experienced punt and kickoff returner. Byron Maxwell might be the hardest hitter in the secondary and will back up Butler. Maxwell had 54 tackles in. He had eight tackles, two tackles f loss, and a caused fumble that changed the momentum of the game in the win at Virginia in. While Clemson must replace both starting safeties, Defensive Backs Coach Charlie Harbison, who is back at Clemson f his second tour of duty, does have one returning starter at safety. DeAndre McDaniel has been moved from linebacker to strong safety and will solve one of the safety issues. In, McDaniel had 77 tackles, fifth-most on the team. He also had four tackles f loss and a fumble return f a sce against Nebraska in the Gat Bowl, the first Tiger to do that in a bowl game. Red-shirt freshman Carlton Lewis figures to be the top replacement at strong safety. Sadat Chambers, who has lettered on offense and defense, is the prime candidate to start at free safety. Chambers was a second-team safety last year when he had 21 tackles. He also lettered as a productive running back in 7. Red-shirt freshman Rashard Hall is his backup entering the spring, while Spencer Adams, who sat out last year with a tn ACL, will also compete f playing time. I think our defensive line will be the strength of the defense, perhaps the entire team, said Swinney. We have talented players who wk well together. It is a deep group. I am anxious to see what they can do in Coach Steele s style of defense. Clemson returns three starters across the front four. The unit is rated among the top 10 in the nation accding to some preseason magazines. Sapp is the leader and most experienced at that position from his bandit end position. He was having a strong juni year in with 2 tackles, including a team-tying-high 10 tackles f loss, through the first 10 games. But he suffered a tn ACL at Virginia and missed the rest of the season. Seni Kevin Alexander is a returning starter at defensive end and looks to have an outstanding fi 7

3 9 Preview Outlook nal year. The high school teammate of Spiller had 34 tackles in 13 games, including 10 as a starter, last year. Kourtnei Brown is another athletic end who will make a strong contribution. Clemson has three returning starters f the two defensive end positions. Da Quan Bowers started six games last year and had 47 tackles, most among all Tiger front-four linemen. He had a strong finish to his freshman year with six tackles, including three tackles f loss, against Nebraska and was named Clemson s MVP in the Gat Bowl. The Tigers must replace Dell Scott at defensive tackle, but Jarvis Jenkins returns as a seasoned veteran. Jenkins had a solid sophome year when he started 12 games and had 3 tackles, 30 of which were first hits. He finished the year with 10 tackles f loss to tie Sapp f the team lead. Brandon Thompson and Jamie Cumbie are two me returning defensive linemen who will see plenty of playing time. Thompson was slated to red-shirt in, but injuries fced him to active duty. He responded with 25 tackles, including five tackles f loss, as a backup. Cumbie sat out all but one game in and received a medical red-shirt. A Parade All-American in high school, Cumbie is poised f a breakout season after injuring both wrists in. Miguel Chavis is another defensive lineman with considerable experience. Clemson returns two starters at the linebacker positions, plus a third player with starting experi- against the school from his home state and he continued to be productive the rest of the year. The First-Team All-ACC Academic pick finished with 7 tackles in 12 games, fourth-most on the team. He earned first-team freshman All-America hons accding to the Football Writers Association. Scotty Cooper looks to be the third starter at linebacker. The juni had 2 tackles last year as an off-and-on starter at strongside linebacker. Special Teams Graduate linebacker Kavell Conner has 202 career tackles, secondmost among active ACC players. ence. Conner was Clemson s top tackler last year with 125 stops and finished among the top 12 in the ACC last year. He has 202 career tackles, secondmost among active ACC players. Brandon Maye had an outstanding red-shirt freshman season at middle linebacker in. The Alabama native had 12 tackles in his first game Clemson must replace multi-year starters Mark Buchholz and Jimmy Maners at the two kicking positions. Buchholz made field goals last year and was perfect on 40 extra points in leading the team in scing (5). Maners finished his career fourth in punting (41.7). He also had 13 punts inside the 20 in and 29 in his career. Red-shirt freshman Spencer Benton looks to take over the placekicking duties, but he will be pressured by Richard Jackson. Both were perfect on field goals in the Spring Game. Sophome Dawson Zimmerman, who started two games and punted in three last year, should be the starting punter. He had a 3.5-yard average on 12 punts. Clemson is in good shape in the return game. Spiller was 14th in the nation in kickoff returns last year and has three career kickoff returns f sces. Fd is also experienced in both areas. He has a punt and kickoff return f sces of over 90 yards. Preseason Depth Chart Pos.
