2 PRECISION SHOOTING -AUGUST BY JAMES MOCK This year's Super Shoot was unlike any of the seven that I have attended in that it did not rain during the four days of competition. However, it was typical in many ways. Tony Boyer won the two-gun with almost flawless shooting. This was win number five for the "Great One" from Virginia. As a side note, I interviewed Tony and Faye Boyer on Monday before the competition began on Wednesday. I hope to have this interview in the pages of this magazine soon. In 25 I interviewed Col. Billy Stevens and he won the Super Shoot. Maybe I should charge the competitors for interviews that are followed by a winning performance. ' Tony surpassed Don Geraci in SS wins with his fifth victory. The two had been tied with four each for several years. I called Don before I left for Ohio and told him that he had better get to Kelbly's and defend his record. He had a prairie dog shoot pending and passed on the chance to defend his "honor". Another change at this year's shoot was the absence of Jim Kelbly at the microphone as range master. After some 29 years, he turned the reins over to his 19 year old son, Ian. This young man did an outstanding job. The match was run like a fine Swiss watch with Michael Kelbly heading up the target crew; George Kelbly Jr. measuring the thousands of targets; and Karen Kelbly and her kitchen crew providing meals for over 3 competitors... plus those wonderful pies. Also, I would like to thank Hobie Bond for providing not only the statistics reported here, but for the wonderful meal that he and Kathy provided the competitors at their home. I would be negligent if I didn't credit the one who cooked the shrimp at this outing. Clay Spencer not only did the cooking, but washed the pots and pans afterward. The best thing about attending the Super Shoot is the opportunity to rekindle friendships with those one has not seen in a year or more. For instance, I loaded across the table from Steve Turner. In 1993, I began shooting Benchrest in the rimfire division. Steve was at the top of the BR-5 game then and he traveled from his home in Indiana to Texas Continued on next page Photo #4 shows Tony at the bench doing some serious practice.
3 16 PRECISION SHOOTING -AUGUST 29 Super Shoot XXXVII May 2-23, 29 Continued Photo #1 has many of the competitors enjoying the food andfellowship. Photo #2 shows Clay at work. Photo #3 shows Steve receiving the first place trophy for LV/2 yards. Photo #5 shows PS writer Joe Krupa and Gene Bukys. Of course these shirts show the results from Phoenix and not SS XXXVll. and Louisiana for competition. He has now switched to centerfire, but he still has the skills that were honed with the little rimfire. (See page 17 for the results in the1i /2 lb. category.) As one can see, the cream rises to the top. Congratulations to Lee Hachigan for his 1.5 # grand win. He stayed in the hunt for the entire four days. Also, my old friend from Iowa, Dave Coots, was a force to be reckoned with in this class. Last year's winner, Larry Costa, shot well in both classes and almost caught Tony. He finished second in the two-gun and shot consistently throughout the event. Many of the great shooters had "train wrecks". The conditions did not seem too bad, but the mirage was worse than I remember from previous years. (See page 18 for the results in the13i/2 lb. category.) As one can see, Tony dominated the HV stage of the competition with a second place finish at 1 yards and a first at 2. He did this with his old Hart/McMillan rifle with a Bartlein gain-twist barrel. Also, kudos to Gene Bukys who shot extremely well. Gene was the man to beat for the first two days. (See page 19 for the equipment lists for the top twenty in each category.) Although I did not shoot especially well, I thoroughly enjoyed this Super Shoot. My twogun finish was 74th and I guess a good spin would be to say that I finished in the top 25%. If you have not been to a Super Shoot or if it has been several years since you attended, let me urge you to make the effort to attend. Good shooting. James Mock
