1 ICSC Newsletter I s a b e l l a C o u n t y S p o r t s m a n s C l u b Visit our website: W i n n, M I th Quarter A Message From The President The Importance of Promoting the Isabella County Sportsman s Club Since the beginning of this year, we at the ICSC have been placing extra focus on promoting the club and all it has to offer the membership. People in the Isabella County area need a place to pursue their interest in the shooting sports. The ICSC offers a private, secure and safe environment to do just that. We have always considered public relations and promotions at the club, but our recent focus is taking that to a new level. We now have charged our public relations chairperson, Amy (amymcgillvary@gmail.com), charged with the task of promoting all of the activities at the club and have redoubled our efforts. You may have noticed the fliers posted around town promoting events taking place at the club. We have had good numbers of participants at our bench rest shoots this summer. The egg shoots have also done well. Trap participation has increased and sporting clays has been busy on Sundays. Work has been done on the sign at the corner of Winn and Millbrook Roads. Upcoming events are posted and updated regularly. Our website address is now listed on everything associated with the club and has been a very effective public relations tool. The club had a table at the Isabella County Fair. Club representatives were available to answer questions and informational handouts were distributed to people who came to our space in the tent. A table was set up at two events on the campus of CMU as well. Mainstage and Get Acquainted Day were attended by thousands, and we were there! The club has a billboard going up to promote sight in days and the annual gun show. Look for the board on High Street just west of Bradley starting in late September. The Morning Sun will be publishing a column on topics related to the sportsman s club. I will be submitting a piece as often as every other week and it will appear in both the online and hard copy versions of the paper in Sunday editions. Finally, we have put together a small inventory of ICSC tee shirts and hats. We have sold several and have more available if you are interested. Contact Amy or me and we can provide information on how you may purchase one. Perhaps the most important piece of club promotion should come from the membership. In order for our club to thrive, people must know we are out there and are available. Please tell people about your sportsman s club and all that it has to offer. Scott DeFrain ICSC President

2 Page 2 ICSC Newsletter The ICSC has new t-shirts and hats available for purchase. The t-shirts are Texas orange with white writing. The writing is a small replica of the ICSC logo on the front left. Shirts are $10 and are available in size adult S to adult 2XL. The hats are baseball cap style. They are Texas orange with white embroidery. Hats are $15.00 each. Contact Amy McGillvary at or amymcgillvary@gmail.com with questions or to make a purchase. All of the damage to the sign on our range has been repaired and it has been repainted. Thanks to the volunteers that worked on this project.

3 2014 4th Quarter Page 3 HUNTER EDUCATION CLASS FALL 2014 Another successful hunter safety session is in the books! On September 6 th and 7 th, the Isabella County Sportsman s Club hosted 79 students for their semi-annual hunter safety class. We would like to extend our sincerest appreciation to the more than 25 volunteers, both members and non-members, who stepped up to share their love, knowledge, and appreciation of the outdoor sports. As usual, the students were taught how to safely use a bow, a muzzleloader, a shotgun, and a rifle. They were also taught tree-stand safety, survival skills, basic first-aid, and how to follow a blood trail.

6 Page 6 ICSC Newsletter 2014 Egg Shoot Results Fun was had by all at the egg shoots that were held this summer. Each competition ended in a shoot-off where the top shooters ended up shooting at either a bottle cap or a paint ball to determine supremacy. The egg shoots took place on July 13 th, August 17 th, and September 14 th. Competitors could choose to participate in the factory class or the unlimited class. 7 2014 4th Quarter Page 7 NEWSLETTER CHANGES We would like to congratulate Marianne McJames on her recent retirement from Central Michigan University. Marianne will also be retiring from producing our club newsletter at the end of this year. In fact, this is Marianne s final production. Marianne rejuvenated our newsletter three years ago and has turned it into the quality publication that it is today. Thank you, Marianne, for all of your hard work on the newsletter over the past few years. It will be very difficult to replace you. We wish you the very best in your retirement and know that you will stay in touch with the club. If anyone from the membership would like to become involved in producing the newsletter for 2015, please send me a note at scott.defrain@gmail.com. It has been my pleasure to create this newsletter the last 3 years during our club s reorganization. Though I am stepping back from the production of our newsletter, both Bob and I will continue to support our club in many other ways. Take the time to become involved. This newsletter is an essential tool for our club, so it is important that members submit stories, pictures, or other information. Become involved by volunteering your labor to maintain our clubhouse, grounds, and ranges. We would not be able to offer membership at the current rate if we had to pay for all of the labor provided by our volunteers. Volunteers also provide the manpower to run all of our programs and offer training & leadership to our membership and community. If you are able to contribute to your club, please contact a board member (listed on page 9) for opportunities. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this newsletter. -Marianne McJames 3D Archery Shoot On September 27, the Isabella County Sportsman s Club hosted the first 3D archery shoot in more than 10 years. A special thanks to Dave Randall and Amy McGillvary for organizing and running this event. The winner of the event was Mark Larner of Remus. 8 Page 8 ICSC Newsletter Wild Turkey: A Conservation Success Story At the turn of the last century, the wild turkey population had disappeared in Michigan and much of the country. More than 100 years later, turkeys are plentiful and Michigan ranks among the top 10 states for harvest. Efforts to restore the bird spanned decades. Michigan s wild turkey population was estimated at 2,000 by 1964 and the state s first modern-day hunting season followed in the fall of About 400 turkeys were taken during the 1977 season. Fast forward to 2013 when 32,000 birds were harvested during the spring season! Today, Michigan is home to approximately 200,000 wild turkeys. Sportsmen-financed funds and support have been instrumental in the bird s comeback. The spring season is now the traditional time to hunt wild turkey; limited fall hunts are offered in specific areas. Find out more at Deer Hunting Update A Look Back at 2013 In 2013, an estimated 661,800 hunters spent more than 9 million days afield. Those hunters harvested about 385,000 deer. Statewide, 43% of hunters harvested a deer; about 13 percent harvested two or more deer. Less than 4% of hunters statewide harvested two antlered bucks. Nearly 12% of the license buyers in 2013 were younger than 17 years old. About 162,730 hunters used a crossbow during the archery season and 36% of those hunters harvested a deer Hunting Incidents There were a total of nine hunting incidents reported, including one fatality. Six of the nine incidents involved self-inflicted firearm injuries; two incidents involved crossbows. Find more information, including a report on the current 2014 season at
