1 ICSC Newsletter I s a b e l l a C o u n t y S p o r t s m a n s C l u b Visit our website: W i n n, M I rd Quarter A Message From The President In our last quarterly newsletter, I talked about a project that includes the fencing of the club property along Millbrook Road, including the entrance. In an attempt to improve security and reduce vandalism, the board approved the project to sink posts along Millbrook and attach a cable from Winn Road to the fencing on the rifle range. The posts have been placed. The cable will be strung sometime this month. What this means for you is that there may be an additional lock that you need to deal with when entering club property. The cable that stretches across the entrance will have locks on each end. The lock on the left side of the cable will be used by maintenance personnel, refuse removal personnel and non members that rent the clubhouse. The lock on the right (east side) will have the same combination as the range gate. This combination is printed on your membership card. If you are the first member to the club that day, you will need to unlock the cable to access the lot. You may leave this cable down and the last member to leave the property will return the cable to the locked position. Please remember to stretch the cable and lock it if you are the last person to leave the property. Please don t confuse this procedure with the range gate. The range gate should be closed behind every member when entering or leaving the range. Have a great summer and I hope to see you at the club..22 Benchrest Shoot Results Scott DeFrain, ICSC President Our first.22 benchrest shoot was held on June 19. Ten shooters participated in two classes, factory and custom. Alex Murray shot a 247 6x in the factory class to win match 1. Brian Wood shot a x in match 1 to win the custom class. In match 2, Alex Murray won with a 248 7x in factory, and Mike Worthington shot a x to win the custom class. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who participated including Jim Fleishman, Geoff Schmidt, Scott DeFrain, James Halstead, Rich Nestle, Sarah Nestle and Dean Paesons. Our next shoot will be held on July 24. More information can be found on the website and elsewhere in this newsletter. Next Hunter Safety Education Class September 6 & 7, 2014 Through the years, the Isabella County Sportsman s Club has earned a reputation for one of the best Hunter Safety Education Programs statewide. The fall Hunter Safety Education Program will be conducted over the weekend of September 6 & 7. Although there is no minimum age specified, parents should only enroll youth with enough maturity to actively engage in the training and understand the fundamentals of safe gun handling, conservation and sportsman s ethics. Rental fees are $250 for members and $350 for nonmembers. A $100 deposit will be collected and returned if cleaning by the club staff is not necessary after the event. One of the ways that I will be working to increase membership is by having an informational display booth set up at local events like the Isabella County Fair, Welcome Weekend at CMU, Shepherd Maple

3 2014 3rd Quarter Page 3 ICSC Welcomes New Public Relations Chair My name is Amy McGillvary and I am the new chair of the Public Relations Committee. I have two general areas where I will be focusing my time and attention: increasing memberships and getting the current members more active in club activities. One of the ways that I will be working to increase membership is by having an informational display booth set up at local events like the Isabella County Fair, Welcome Weekend at CMU, Shepherd Maple Syrup Festival, and the Chamber of Commerce s Business Expo. If you know of other events where this type of marketing could be successful, please let me know and I will check into it. Another way that I will be working to increase membership is by working with local employers in an attempt to further establish our corporate membership affiliations. If you know of a business that employs lots of avid sportsmen, let me know and I will try to connect with the human resources department to see what we can work out. I will also be hanging informational fliers around the county promoting individual events that are being held at the club and promoting the club as a whole. If you are willing to hang those at your place of employment or other spot that you know of where sportsmen hang out, please let me know and I will get copies of the fliers to you either in person or by . As far as getting the current members more involved, I have a few ideas that I am currently exploring. Those ideas include sending targeted s with information about upcoming events that match the stated interests of the members, creating a Facebook page for the club, creating a Twitter account for the club, and taking suggestions from members and working to see those suggestions come to fruition. The one thing that will help in this area is input from the general membership with regard to what they would like to see the club offer. 7 2014 3rd Quarter Page 7 FROM THE RANGE Despite some threatening weather earlier in the week, May 24th was a beautiful day for the first ICSC Benchrest Match of the year. Twelve shooters participated in the day s event, with some impressive scores being evidenced. Of special note, Michigan s own Andrea Dardas made the trip over from Essexville to shoot with her dad. For those of you who don't know, Andrea is one of Jacksonville State University s most decorated athletes on their Air Rifle Team, and is a NRA All-American Team Member and was an Olympic hopeful. It goes without saying that shooters who are drawn to a sport where the accuracy is measured by a micrometer are an eclectic bunch, and those who came out on that Saturday were no exception. Philosophies and opinions were shared willingly from this gregarious bunch, each offering compelling rationale for their choices, yet often contradictory to their neighbor s selections. Should it be a short barrel to decrease the barrel s harmonics or should it be longer for higher velocity? Should I load my match ammunition at home using proven combinations, or do I set up my reloading station at the range so I can make adjustments for temperature and humidity, among other factors? Even for spectators, if you appreciate the art and science of shooting, it s all very interesting. Range Master Harry Ross and ICSC s own Benchrest Shooter Steve Robbins orchestrated the match with help from Fred Ross and others. After registration there was a short meeting where we met up with the boat the Captain/first mate we were going to fish with on Sunday. To end the day there was a very moving flag ceremony.

8 Page 8 ICSC Newsletter The 4th annual Walleyes For Warriors event was held June 14th & 15th 2014 at Veterans Park in Bay City, Michigan. Club members and Disabled Veterans, Lance Wheeler & Dave Randall, along with local residents Jerry Wagner, Willard Denton and father/son Tim and Matt Scheinder were part of the Disabled Veterans participating in this year s event. 115 boat owners, along with first mates donated their time, fuel & equipment to take out 225 Disabled Veterans on Saginaw Bay walleye fishing. Boat Captains and Veterans registered Saturday afternoon, where we received a bag of goodies. After registration there was a short meeting where we met up with the boat the Captain/first mate we were going to fish with on Sunday. To end the day there was a very moving flag ceremony. Sunday Morning starting at 5:30am veterans met up with their respective boats and launched, once everyone was launched there was a Coast Guard, DNR and local police escort as the boats paraded down the Saginaw River to the Bay. The weather was decent, a steady wind made the bay quite choppy with 2-4 foot rollers. But that didn't seem to bother the participants or the fish. After six hours of fishing, the boats returned to Veterans Park where we were met by a large crowd waving flags and cheering. Once the boat was trailered, we took our catch to the check in station, where they recorded our catch and added them to the pile of fish headed to the cleaning tents. 225 Veterans returned from six hours of fishing with 1,058 walleyes, several nice perch, a couple of pike. and some big sheepshead. Prizes were given for the largest walleye caught inches caught by a WWII Vet in a wheel chair, and the largest sheepshead-- 28 inches caught by a Viet Nam era Vet. Once we were checked in, we had a very nice meal catered by the Soaring Eagle Casino. They had enough volunteers helping, that by the time we had our meal and the door prizes were handed out, all the fish had been cleaned and bagged. Each veteran received a ziplock baggie of fillets to take home with them. A great time was had by all involved. For more information or to donate go to: Submitted by Dave Randall
