The Silver Arrow Journal Official Newsletter of the Silver Arrow Bowmen Issue The Presidents Podium- In the last meeting we briefly reviewed the indoor leagues and shoots, did the pre-planning for the Bonanza and of course talked about the work being done at the range. The March Madness shoot had to be modified some as the February Freeze Out went way over it s time limit and did not get completed until 2pm. We changed the initial Robinhood round to 20 targets, which worked, but the weather really killed us as it was beautiful outside and so not that many people wanted to come to an indoor shoot. The same was true for our last indoor league, the winners of which had already been pretty much determined, except in the Traditional category where the last days scores turned over the 2 nd and 3 rd place winners.. The Bonanza shoot is scheduled for Sunday, April 26. We will be out at the Range on Friday the 24 th to set out the shooting stakes and get the 3-D animals out, inventoried and repaired/ prepared. Saturday the 25 th, we will set the animals out and do all the final preparations. We will be meeting at the range at 9:00 am on Friday and Saturday to get these things done and anticipate being done by 2 to 3 pm. We will need the most help on Saturday and appreciate anyone who can come out. For more details, give me a call at In a discussion about the carpet bale butts (for which we still need carpet) another idea came up, apparently in Redding they have started coating their carpet bales with pickup truck bed liner material. They have a member who does this for them (he owns the business) and they say it lengthens their life considerably. DOES ANYBODY OUT THERE HAVE A CONNECTION TO THIS INDUSTRY LOCALLY? If you do, please contact us, we know that it is expensive but would like to know what we can get it done for locally to see it if it is cost effective. Hope to see you at the Next meeting, Monday April 13 th, 2015, at 6:30 The Scheels store, upstairs classroom next to the Archery Department. Key Items of Business Item #1 Indoor Shoots and Leagues- Final Item #2 Final Planning for the Bow Hunter Bonanza Item #3 Range Improvements with Parks, recently completed and on going The construction at the range went forward and all of the bale butt concrete pads were poured and are in place, including the one for target #1 of the Field Round course. This week, a youth corps group is out there clearing the shooting lanes and putting in the trails. They are also 1
doing the trails and shooting lanes of the Field course and sinking the core yardage markers in the ground so they do not stick up. Completing that, they will be leveling out the places where the broadhead pits are going and clearing a lot of debris out of that area. They also have put fence signs up all the way around the perimeter of the range. I have to summarize the discussion on the range improvements and just hit the highlights. Since the last letter I had several members ask me who Wayne Thomas is and is he on the board. Wayne has been a member for several years and has worked on range maintenance with Cal Yarbrough, who is the Range Captain. He does not hold an elected position with our Club. He was the VP of the Loyalton/ Feather River Archery Club although I don t know if he is still in that position. Wayne expressed his opinion that everything in the previous letter was a bunch of bull and there was no reason to go forward with the plan when we have perfectly good area to have a (static range) shooting north where there would be no issues with sun or anything. He wanted us to scrap the project and just make the area an extension of the field course, then build a static range facing North in the area just south of the parking lot. The obvious problem there is that puts everything shooting at the parking lot and main access road. To this concern he said we could build a big burm or put up a 30 foot high barricade like they have in Redding. All of this so that the sun would not be an issue, for 1 hour a day, first thing in the morning. That idea not catching on, he said you could have it shoot south then, but it should still be in static range configuration (all in a line, everyone waits for everyone else to shoot at every shooting station, which are all right next to each other, like a gun range) As to it being unsupervised, he pointed out that he was in Redding the other weekend and they had 500 shooters at a shoot and they had just such a range. He dismissed the idea that this was supervised at an event, saying nobody was in charge of it everyone just waited for everyone else etc... I disagreed as I m pretty sure that there were a lot of experienced shooters and members of their club who watched what everyone was doing, unlike our range when there is no event going on. He also said that he has never seen any JOAD* or NASP** parents out at the range helping so there is no reason to have an area just dedicated to them. The participation of JOAD and NASP is based on there being grants available for the development of that area of the range. The development of the area for JOAD/NASP and Target archery is based on that. Otherwise, the resources for developing the area is catch as catch can, just like the rest of the range. *JOAD Junior Olympic Archery Development ( a national Target archery program for youth up through 18) ** NASP National Archery in the Schools Program (a target archery based program in the schools to develop interest and proficiency in archery) I want any member of this club who agrees with Wayne that the current new range should be scraped and emphasis should be put on building a new static range, to send me an at gboekd@sbcglobal.net expressing that opinion. 2
The VP Voice Unlike the February Freeze out, March Madness did not hit on the perfect day (for an indoor shoot) as it was warm and beautiful outsid ena dn had been that way for several days. That pretty much killed our participation, with only the hardcore regulars showing up. It was also on the first weekend of spring break in the schools and a lot of our regulars and youth were gone, food for thought on its timing for next year.. We still had good competition and made about $190 The spring league s last night and participation over the last few weeks was down, for the same reasons as the March Madness shoot, good weather outside! I am now looking forward to the Bonanza shoot and the start up of the outdoor league. Both should be interesting as we will be using the area behind the old practice range, which is new territory for these events. Did you see the hunting regs for this year, look at the photo below from the Elk page, the hunter is none other than Ric Manion, a former President and long time member of SAB This is the one he wrote the article about a few years back. So Since the book is out, obviously the tag applications are out. Get those applications in, the big game tags are due by April 20 th, then it will all be over but the waiting! Robert Canham, member, long bowman and machinist extraordinaire, has donated the below pictured UNR Fremont Cannon replica that he built from solid brass. It will be featured in the raffle at the Bonanza shoot. Thanks Robert! 3

We are all paid up with the State, the County and our insurance For further information and details, come to our next meeting Remember, May is renewal month for all of those who have been members for over a year! We will be sending out notices to those who have not renewed, then we will start dropping them from our list We currently list 96 single memberships and 42 family memberships that are fully active and paid up on their dues. We also have 12 life memberships. That puts us at 190 members We are in the continual process of updating our membership list, if you have had a change of address or other information, please let us know! Also, we really need to update the member list, so please send your to our new address at : silverarrowbowmens@hotmail.com Especially now that we have transitioned to newsletters! The Web We are continuously building more information into the new web site Our Calendar page is now updated, if you see any information that is not correct on the web site, or have information you would like to see us post, please let us know! 4
Facebook SilverarrowbowmenNV Member Lystra Pitts got us on Facebook, so we can post hunting photos etc there. Our Secretary, Heather Campolieti will do most of the management work on it, so if you have questions, call her. If you friend us on facebook, it gives us another avenue to get information out to you on events and what the club is doing! The Range Captain s Corner Out on the Range The Lemmon Valley Range remains open to members and the general public every day, via the lower parking lot and walk over gate. There are 28 bail butts available for shooting. Please leave the range clean! Remember, the gate code may change, after we get our membership audit done in January, see membership for further information. Work party We will be moving the 3-D animals from Wasting Arrows back out to the range in the next week or so, I do not have a specific date for that project yet. I am hoping to move the bale butts to the new range before the Bonanza, but do not have an actual scheduled day for that yet. We will have work parties to set up the Bonanza shoot on April 24 & 9:am for anyone who can come out and help. I anticipate that we will be done around 2 or 3 pm. The range was closed from the morning until 3 pm while the Youth Corps, working with the Parks Department did work on the range thru April 9 th. They cleared the shooting lanes and trails for the new practice range. They have also redone all of the trails on the Field Course, as well as sunk all of the distance marker cores down flush with the ground. Hopefully they will get the broadhead pits leveled and ready to be constructed and a few other projects before they leave. SAB contact information Silver Arrow Bowmen P.O.
