Editor s Notes: This newsletter kind of crept on me so I apologize if it is a little late. It seems like the High Country shoot was just a few weeks ago and now it is already time for hunting season. As you pursue your game this year remember to take photos whether they are of game or just the scenery where you hunt and submit them for the newsletters. I have had several comments from people who like to see photos of our member s adventures in the newsletter. Although there will be another newslet- ter before the February joint banquet with Compton Traditional Bowhunters, put it on your calendar now. It is shaping up to be an epic event that should not be missed. Be safe in your hunting adventures and have a good time. 2 Chairman s Column Hello everyone, are you folks as excited as I am that hunting season is just around the corner. I can t tell you how wound up I am. I think some of my anticipation is from Karen and me missing the High Country shoot. It didn t seem like summer was right with that huge void at the end of June. I had not missed one shoot since the beginning and hope it never happens again. Karen and I have had some pretty big curve balls pitch our way, but we re doing OK and everything s alright. Sometimes you just have to do what you should instead of what you want. Thank all of you who once again put H/C together. I am always amazed at the people in the organization. You give of yourselves above and beyond and that s what makes CTAS the experience of a life time. Let us all take time when we see these folks behind the booth, setting up targets, working the kitchen or any of the other million jobs it takes to make this event of the year happen. From both Karen and I we thank all of you more than you know. Well, back to the future hunt n season. No pun intended. Here s a prayer for all of you who are headed into the breath taking mountains, lush valley floors or our wide open plains. Take time to reflect on what you are, where you are and why you are there. Life is short and we need to be the best stewards of this gift we can. Carry a full pack of ethics with you everywhere you go because what you do bleeds on all of us. My God bless your hunt with success both in memories and your animal. Take care my friends and be safe... As I get older the times goes faster and I get less and less done. I apologize for missing the last newsletter. I try to keep up with all the publications I get. It seems the controversy right now with Pope & Young and Boone & Crockett is long range killing. P&Y has had some entries killed at over 100 yards and Boone & Crockett at around 1000 yards. I guess if our ancestors had to rely on long range killing there would be a lot fewer humans on this planet. High-tech shooters are what they are high-tech shooters not bowhunters. Our equipment that we proudly use is meant for what the word bowhunter is supposed to mean. I know over the years I have had remarks directed at me meaning that I shot whatever with a gun and put the arrow in the hole. I didn t take too kindly to those remarks. Today s bowhunter want instant Bowhunting is at the highest level. We may gratification and the majority if today s society seems to follow the same path. We all have to live by a set of standards. Traditional not be as successful as often as a high-tec person but our pride in what we accomplish puts them to shame. Ted with a nice Bear taken in 1990 To finish up I want to mention how good the High Country Shoot was and give a big thank you to all who helped. It is our biggest event and all the volunteers deserve a round of applause. Thank you again. Hunting season is just around the corner so good luck to all of you. 4 An Open Letter to the Membership from Mike Koenig, CTAS Secretary and the CTAS Board of Directors July 2, 2015 To the CTAS membership: To quote a long time member: the club has come so far. Look at what has been accomplished over the past 25 years by the hard work and sweat of those who have made this happen. Those few people are about out of sweat. That problem is what I want to address to the membership. The old guard is approaching the point of backing out, or even falling down. Larry Alma has retired as the High Country Shoot kitchen boss. I do not remember when Larry did not fulfill this job. All of the pre-shoot preparation that necessarily takes place in Grand Junction has fallen upon a core group of three to four people. These jobs involve trailer preparation (filling the water tank, filling the propane bottles) shopping for food and drinks;; getting the food and drinks into the trailer and freezers;; shopping for raffle items. These and many incidental jobs take days to finish. The people doing this have been doing this since the beginning. Much if not all of that pre-shoot preparation taking place in Junction revolves around the kitchen. The kitchen has become the focal point of the shoot. It is the place where people gather, find friends and spend money. Without it, the shoot, in my mind, deteriorates. We lose, and we lose a lot without that focal point. Another event that primarily the Grand Junction crew handles is the Youth hunt;; Set- up, take down, propane, food, blinds, mentors, licenses, kitchen, all of it. items, coordinate donations, and help run the raffle booth at the shoot. Someone on the front range would be ideal as there are more sportsman's stores there to acquire donations from. The more tasks we can have handled in other parts of the state sure help take part of the load off. The High Country Shoot is the best shoot, bar none, in the State, and probably within the region. We get people coming from all across the nation and internationally as well. We are complimented frequently in person and on social media. CTAS needs new help to keep the High Country Shoot and Banquet going. This is a plea on a personal level to the membership to contact your board members and volunteer. We need your help. Following is a list of the jobs we need to fill;; think about it and volunteer. Shoot Chairman (we always need someone) Kitchen supervisor Vendor supervisor Novelty supervisor Medical supervisor Certified Raffle supervisor Please contact board members and talk to them about volunteering. The web site has a list with s and phone numbers. We have long time members who are burning out, getting old. We have an equipment concentration in Grand Junction far from the majority of members on the front range. Logistically, the trailers and equipment we have in Junction need to stay there unless we find a place and people elsewhere to take over. For that matter think about the various functions at the shoot like the store or range layout. The same people have been doing those jobs for years. Mike Koenig, Secretary Duties that could be handled by folks other than the GJ crew, in addition to the store, are the raffles. Now that we are a 501c3, we need a raffle chairman. The raffle chairman needs to get certified by the state (fairly easy process). They would be in charge of scheduling with sports stores to purchase the raffle 4
